This study bible is really an eye opener for a deeper understanding of so much. The commentary notes are so helpful, you could teach a sermon just from them. Who ever buys this will be so blessed. This bible also has studies in the back that you can also use. Auto biography's on so many patriarchs, disciples etc. I would highly recommend this bible to new believers on up.

Great for the beginner and scholar alike. Maps throughout so the reader can view the region where the passage is taking place. The print is a good size although it could stand to be a tad larger.

I originally bought this Bible in the hardcover version and have upgraded to this nicer one now.

I find the notes, maps and cross-references to be very helpful study aids. Some of the life application notes are geared toward the new believer or not-yet-believer but overall I think they are valuable to all.

The NLT is a very readable and, I think, accurate translation. For more indepth study, I use the ESV ESV, Thinline TruTone Bible (Chestnut Diamond, Red Letter)with this Bible and am very happy with this system.

I am so impressed with this Bible. It has so many helpful things including a HUGE concordance as well as lots of helpful notes on each page that help with understanding the Scriptures. The Bible is very nice looking and I am so excited about this purchase!

I received my NLT Study Bible with the beautiful tan leather cover about 3 weeks ago. I love reading it, as I find the NLT (New Living Translation) so easy to absorb and recall later. The notes and various study guides and commentaries really bring the Bible to life and will be very helpful for the new Christian, as well as those of us that have walked with The Lord for many years. I only have one "tiny" issue...that being as a 55-year old with not-so-perfect vision I find the print a wee bit small, but still very legible. There are large print editions, but they weigh a ton (bought one for my wife) and I wanted something a bit more manageable. Great version, great tranlation into modern American english, and a very handsome tan leather cover.

My son recommended this to me, when I had complained that I wanted a book that was cheerful. The first chapter was definitely the best of all, and it is what kept me reading through the rest of the book, which was also good.

I've read this book at least two dozen times. I read it once for myself, and each year I read it to my new batch of 7th graders. Everyone loves it. (There are a few parts I don't read to my students.) Every time I pick it up, I fall in love with the characters and am so glad to be part of their lives again! It's funny and sad and is so amazingly real. One year my students wrote Mr. Davis, and he replied. Mr. Davis and I corresponded back and forth for a few letters, and he was seemed like a great guy.

These stories get played on every long car ride our family makes, and all of us (from the first grader on up) are rapt. Davis uses his gentle voice and sly humor to paint unforgettable portraits of beloved relatives, local eccentrics, and lost friends. The stories are fresh and moving each time we hear them; in fact, the repeated listenings increase our appreciation for the mastery of Davis' telling.

This is family entertainment of the highest order.

I don't think anyone can listen to Donald Davis tell his Different Drummer story and not be touched by it. Just it alone is worth the price of the set of cassettes. You also get to hear LSMFT (yes, that's the title of the story), which has a nearly perfect ending. Each is a story so good that you wish you could forget it, so that you'd have the pleasure of listening to it again for the first time.

Listening to the story is better than reading it. His accent and voice make the vivid stories come alive. His stories, about growing up in western North Carolina are nostalgic, yet the issues will appeal to anyone of any age. My children 9 and 15 love his tapes along with my 70 year old parents. He is one of our favorite people to listen to in the car on trips.

I only thought the book was okay. As a huge devotee of her husband John Ortberg, it didn't match my expectations. It seemed to ramble a bit. Although my favorite part of the book is when she pulls over to the side of the road and exclaims, "Jesus NEVER journaled!." There are so many of my contemporaries who feel that there is something wrong with them if they don't journal, or faithbook/scrapbook, etc. I did use this book as a starting point for journaling.

Many Christian books often feel too academic, or so deeply religious it's difficult to really understand the point the author is trying to convey, especially for someone seeking God. Not so with Nancy Ortberg's newest book. By sharing expertly crafted anecdotes, Ortberg makes understanding Faith approachable. This is a great book that really gets you to think about that which really matters.

Honest, real-life insight into finding and listening to God is not easy to come by in a program-filled, success formula, product marketing driven christian media industry. The sort of insights that Nancy brings are needed if we are to grow up beyond the childish spirituality so many of us put up with.

The chapter on 'longings, aches and pains' was the best for me. "We all need to hear God's voice. Our longings, aches and pains are thin threads to that voice. Stay long enough in the aloneness, and you'll find that the silence of God becomes a whisper, and then the whisper becomes the voice that you recognize." If this sort of notion resonates with you then I would encourage you to buy the book. If you are looking for a program or system, this one isn't for you. Looing for God is a welcome counterpoint to the all-too-often guilt-inducing and often fruitless programatic approach to spiritual maturity.

If I were to sum up Nancy Ortberg's new book LOOKING FOR GOD in one word, it would be "Honesty." Through 20 chapters, Nancy presents a fresh look at faith by honest musings and recollections of every day life situations where if we are not paying attention we could miss God's presence.

A couple of chapters have really stood out to me. The first being the chapter on what a quiet time is. I could not agree more of her assessment of how we have some how determined that regardless of how a person may be living and treating others, as long, as he or she is having a quiet time --- we deem their lives as being spiritually healthy. When in reality love is the true measurement. The other chapter that really stood out for me was the one on Normal everyday life. It really speaks to the importance of broadening our understanding of how God desires to connect in our day-to-day occurrences.

The book also sheds light on an important aspect of spiritual life that is regularly overlooked. Often times the conventional way of doing spiritual life is seen from a male perspective. Meaning, if we hear a message on solitude and/or extended time of prayer - we can take action on it by scheduling in those kinds of times. For a woman that is not always the case, especially when they have children in their early years. My wife is currently in this life stage and I have seen how through the course of her day she has had to find ways to connect with God outside of conventional means. Nancy does a great job of speaking into this.

I have heard Nancy speak on several occasions and you can hear her voice through these pages. In addition , for years I have benefited from Nancy's leadership from afar and I am thrilled that she has put some of her thoughts and musings into print so many others can benefit.

It is a very refreshing and insightful book. I hope you will be prodded to read it.

Nancy does a great job dispelling misbeliefs about God and what it means to be an authentic Christian. I loved her down to earth writing style and would go out of my way to hear her speak. She shot holes in some of my perspectives through her stories and personal mistakes. Thank you for being real and conveying truth with a twist. I will give it away to people who are looking for a very relatable, yet relevant Christian view.

This book not only tells you what to do to heal your back, it tells you why with exceptionally thorough evidence using test results, photos, measurements, and statistics. It's pretty intense for the lay reader. Hopefully Dr. McGill will come out with a book for the lay reader and dispel a lot of myths about back health and unhealthy ab exercises that are advertised every day on TV.

Clinicians who wish to competently evaluate, manage, and rehabilitate low back disorders will find this book indispensable due to its unique content. While other texts cover topics related to examination, differential diagnosis, or specific therapeutics, this text focuses on a thorough, component-by-component research-based review of each part of the human lumbopelvic region for the purpose of providing a comprehensive understanding of how the low back truly functions, how to credibly evaluate its function, and how to properly restore as much normal function as possible. Sufficiently detailed for scholars, yet understandable by virtually anyone, Dr. McGill uses a practical, evidence-based dialogue with the reader to address issues which I have rarely seen adequately addressed by anyone. Just what is the true function of the iliopsoas muscle in relation to the low back? And is there really such a thing as an iliopsoas muscle? And how would one properly rehabilitate a weakened rectus abdomonis muscle, without potentially aggravating a low back disorder? And why is this necessary? And is it possible that many of the exercises currently prescribed for chronic low back pain are actually detrimental to the spine, and why? These are but a few of the many important and practical topics that are covered within this book. Frankly, I don't believe anyone can competently care for low back conditions of any kind without this valuable information. I consider this book a valued and essential part of my professional library.

I refer to this book many times over over the years and has helped clear up that tricky patient that is not getting better as fast as they and you the doctor would like. Great source of information for any doctor regardless of how many years in practice. Also highly recommend a book I found to be execellent source for rehabing my patients is called The Backsmart Fitness Plan by Dr.Adam Weiss. A DC who has written a very good and detail source of exercises that patients suffering from back or neck pain can do and make progress. These books add many useful tips to my practice.

Everyone who deals with backs, either in sports (athletes, coaches, trainers), physicians, therapists, and back pain patients themselves, should read this book. I am a physician who specializes in back disorders and back pain. I have followed Dr. McGill's reseach for many years and it has revolutionized my practice like nothing else. One of my top priorities with back pain patients is to review what exercises they have been given in the past. I invariably stop them from doing several excercises that Dr. McGill's research has proven to be quite harmful for the back. I Substitute the 'big three' excercises that are described in this book, and many of the patients need no further intervention. There is a great deal of misinformation regarding back excercise, and many of the excercise routines used in sports, schools, military, and fitness centers are harmful. That is why this book is so important; not because it gives another fitness guru's opinion, but because it gives good, scientifically based facts on one of the tougher clinical issues from a world renown expert. Thank you Dr. McGill - keep the research coming!

This book is fantastic. I wish I could thank Dr. McGill personally for this well-researched, well-founded book on rehabilitating the lower back. This book should be required reading for low back pain patients and their care givers. After reading the book, I was able to relieve a tremendous amount of back pain through very careful application of the ideas. It also helped me understand why my symptoms seemed to be aggravated by physical therapy. If you suffer from lower back pain, this is a great way to take better control of your therapy. The "evidence-based" nature of the book makes it invaluable.

Finally this Australian children's classic is becoming available to Americans. I first read it 60 years ago and it has never lost its unusual charm. I read it to my children, enjoying together its wonderful illustrations by author-artist Norman Lindsey and its whimsical poem-songs: "It's worse than weevils, worse than warts/ Worse than corns to bear/ It's worse than having several quarts of treacle in your hair." My grandchildren are now enjoying the books (I had to order copies from Australia, and consider it wonderful that children today can more easily obtain the book). I consider it a classic of the first order--one of the greatest children's stories of all time.

Big tough talking penguins and talking never ending desserts, what more could you want? Ok, that, but this is a kids book, and one you should get if you have some (kids, that is, not talking penguins and puddings). There are the good guys, and there are the bad guys. Both are hungry, but the bad guys want to put out tasty pudding friend to nefarious ends, while the good guys just want enough dessert. Needless to say, the pudding is cantankerous.

Honestly, I'm no read-aloud wimp! And my kids are usually up for anything. They giggled like mad at the pompous puns of Mr. H.M. Wogglebug T.E. in the Oz books, and urged on my faux-Yorkshire accent in the Secret Garden. The century-old Australian slang and endless sea shanties of the Magic Pudding, though, just about did us in. It really is a magnificent flight of fancy, but there were just too many incomprehensible sentences to paraphrase and longggg songs to make up tunes for. Save this for when you're at your most daring and energetic, read-aloud parents!

The Magic Pudding is a fun-and-nonsense tale that has become my nine-year-old son's favorite book. It deserves to be published in the US so that American children can enjoy what has become a classic in Australian children's literature. If you enjoy Roald Dahl's books, "The Phantom Tollbooth," and "Alice in Wonderland" you'll enjoy this.

This book is part of the wonderful new series of republished children's books from the New York Review of Books. Over 80 years old, "The Magic Pudding" describes the adventures of a koala bear, named Bunyip Bluegum - the kind of koala who wears a high collar and spats - who falls in with a crazy cowboy sort of fellow named Bill Barnacle and a penguin named Sam Sawnoff.

Bill and Sam are possessed of a magic pudding (named Albert, if you can believe this), who regenerates every time you take a bite of him and changes into whatever flavor you like. Albert the pudding is much coveted by two evil villains who are constantly tricking our Heroes into giving up the Pudding, whereupon they must go and re-re-re-rescue it.

The characters and style are very reminiscent of "Alice in Wonderland," with Bunyip seeming a little White-rabbitish to me, and Bill and Sam sort of Mad Hatter and Dormouse-y. The effect is somewhere in between "Alice" and an old Loony Tunes in which Bugs Bunny constantly bewilders Elmer Fudd.

The whole narrative is punctuated with many whimsical song lyrics, like the poetry in Carroll's book. The lyrics make it a great read-aloud for the younger set, although older kids might be a bit puzzled by its style. However, everyone will be charmed by the Pudding himself and want one of their very own.

My neighbor is from the Virginia area and is one of the dearest people I know. She loaned this book to me at just the right time and when I had nothing else to read. I was so wrapped up in it that I sobbed at the end; not only at the loss of such an amazing man Bob Childress nor at the awe inspiring effect he had on the scots-irish fighters of Buffalo mountain, but simply because the book was over! I knew for certain that my recovering alcoholic husband, who happened to be born in West Virginia, and who turned his own life around in an amazing way, would be even more profoundly moved by this book than I was....and I was right.

My wife and I couldn't put this book down until we finished it.It is well written and an inspiration.It is proof of the difference one man can make if he puts all his heart into his goals,and all of his faith in God.Whether the reader has a faith in God or not, it will entertain and inspire you.

I stumbled across this collection of stories at a garage sale and picked it up for a dime. I enjoyed it so much I sought out the rest of Richard Davids' writing. Bob Childress, the preacher this book is about, could teach our world much today. Richard Davids put a lot of work and research into these stories and it shows. It was an absolute pleasure to read and reread.

This book is so amazing. It is a window to a world,thankfully that does
not exist anymore. The author describes how God used a man to bring a whole group of people out of sin and ignorance.
I bought the book because it has my ancestors in it. My father was a pretty wild man. My mother divorced him when I was small because of his violence and drinking. My father's father is mentioned in the book and now I understand my father's problems much more clearly. There is such a thing as generational sin! The book is great for someone with ancestors that came from the mountains of Virginia or North Carolina. I am sure the lifestyle was pretty much the same in any early mountain community.

My husband found this book at a garage sale. He couldn't put it down and related many of the anecdotes to me. I have read this book, since, over and over. There is a sweetness and goodness to it that transforms it from a biography of a great man, to an inspiring book that relates to the possibility for each of us to make our life worthwhile. It is down to earth, funny and wise, a story of a person that lived an amazing life told in a very compelling manner. An encapsulation of the "best" of America's essence.
Anyone who likes history or,especially, anyone who likes Janice Holt Giles books or Forrest Carter will love this book. It is one I return to when I am disenchanted and depressed for a lift.

Berg's work rallies all aspiring authors to the cause of sainthood for Max Perkins...maybe even deification. He tracks Perkins's career vis-a-vis the literary careers of important 20th century American authors. Gives a peek at the largely ignored man behind the curtain...and stands as a monument to his contributions to our literary heritage. A must read for anyone who enjoys books.

Scott Berg's biography of Max Perkins is a warm, sparkling account of America's greatest editor in the prewar period, the midwife for works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Thomas Wolfe in the twenties and thirties, when big-time publishing converged on New York. Berg's book is cunningly organized: the reader steps at once into the rough and tumble of editorial work at Scribner's, leaving Perkins' early life, marriage, and family to be described in concise digressions taken only after we get another satisfying dollop of publishing history. Unhappily, once Perkins has delivered his discoveries to the public, the rest is mostly about their boozy extravagance (Fitzgerald), bullying ego trips (Hemingway), and petulant indiscipline verging on insanity (Wolfe). So even if, for this reason, you stop two-thirds of the way through, your curiosity about this key figure in modern literary history will be very well satisfied.

This is a wonderfully written book, very informative and inspiring for authors, editors, agents and anyone else involved or interested in publishing. Berg does a terrific and subtle job of painting these larger than life characters, allowing their own letters to speak for them. He shows remarkable restraint and good taste and yet has created a book that is enriching and very difficult to put down. Highly recommended!

Scott Berg has written a wonderful biography on one of the most important men in American literature, Max Perkins. Berg's book is well-written and very entertaining. It is more than a biography of Perkins, it is also a biography of Hemingway, Scott Fiztgerald, and Thomas Wolfe, and a portrait of America during the first half of the 20th century. This is one of those books that I could go on and on about. It is a book that everyone should read.

Max Perkins was the great editor at Scribners who handled quite a few of the finest writers of the twentieth century, F. Scott Fitzgerad, Hemingway, and Thomas Wolfe being especially noteworthy (and dealt with at length in this biography). One might envy such a man with such a job, but Berg makes it clear that having to deal with the likes of these authors was like walking around with a huge millstone around Max's poor neck. His job was endless and thankless (Wolfe actually betrayed him). You see from the many letters quoted that many of them are blatant pleas for money. Saying that Perkins had to coddle some of these authors like children would be putting it mildly. Berg does an admirable job relaying Perkins's life and hard times. Recommended.

I loved how Suzanne incorporated her mother's comments on each chapter. It really shows how far their relationship has come over the years and makes the book so real. I am sure writing about their life was very humbling for both of them. I identified with this book and could hardly put it down as my mom had many issues that I wanted so badly not to transfer down to my own daughter. I reviewed this book as research for a book I was writing on prodigal daughters and found that Suzanne gives a wealth of information that is helpful both for parents who are trying to overcome their own past as well as those who find their children repeating some of the generational sins of the parents. A must read for every parent.
Janet Thompson author of "Woman to Woman Mentoring," "Dear God, They Say It's Cancer" and "Praying for Your Prodigal Daughter" (release 2/08)

I grew up in a loving Christian home and yet, I was spellbound by this book. Eller's commitment to the Lord is contagious, her spirit refreshing, and her down to earth candor very helpful. I plan to use this book for my next Bible study.

Suzie Eller's heart is all over this book, and she doesn't hold anything back. Her mother's contribution to the book helped me look at my own mother in a different light and to realize every person has a some kind of baggage that spills over into their own parenting.

I found myself drawn into the stories of her life that it was hard for me to stop and work through the questions after each chapter. That's why I'm going to read it again, and this time take a closer look at my upbringing, and present parenting habits. Suzie's story gave me hope and helped me see that I could be the mom I really want to be. And it's not too late, no matter how old my children are.

The Mom I Want to Be is different from the other "mothering" books I've read. Eller tells her story of a dysfunctional family life and how she has overcome it to be a successful, loving mother. If you had a less-than-wonderful childhood or even if you simply struggle with minor pain from your past, you'll want to read this book. It's a vivid portrayal of the effects of our words and actions as parents can have on our children. It's also a touching story of how these hurts can be overcome.

Don't let the title fool you. This wonderful book is for women everywhere. It shows women how to deal with major issues, whether they have children or not. It talks about forgiving, breaking down walls, and much more.

Ms. Eller is a breath of fresh air because she's real. Her mother, Mrs. Morrison, deserves five stars for her courage in this project. Both of them made me laugh, and cry.

The following lines, written by Suzanne's mother in chapter ten, brought the tears: "If I could talk with someone whose life is like mine once was, I would say that God is the great Healer. He can make you whole again no matter how broken you once were. He can give you a new spirit on the inside of you. He can give you what you need to forgive the wrongs done to you, and he can give you what you need to forgive yourself for what you have done to others."

These lines, written by Suzanne after she mentions having surgery in chapter nine, made me belly laugh: "Faith was holding my hand. Her bright cheerful voice was just as powerful as the drugs in my system. She was also the person who hit the drug-dispensing button too many times (because I was moaning in my sleep) and helped me discover I was allergic to morphine. I woke up swollen like a sausage."

I grew to love these women by the end of the book.

I believe you will as well.

This book was great! It was very interesting. I couldn't put it down. It gives you a great insight into how big cosmetic companies really think.

THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT MAKEUP, IT IS ABOUT THE PRODUCTS WE USE ON ON BODIES! I COULDN'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN.

This book provides enlightening insight into the ongoing deceptions in the skin care industry. There are numerous studies cited as to the effects of chemicals found in most skin care products. An absolute must read for anyone, especially those with children.

This book came quickly after I purchased it. The book is fabulous and I highly recommend it!

First let me put my biases up front. I do not like the cosmetics industry. I do not like the petroleum industry and I certainly do not like the advertising industry.

Having said that, let me try and and provide a constructive review.

This is a book that proposes to expose the seedy underside of the cosmetics industry. It is very readable and "user friendly". I read it from cover to cover in just a few days and in every chapter learned/was repulsed by something new. Given my biases I do encourage readers to check out the provided sources to determine for themselves the veracity of the information (I did so and was convinced). However, be aware that this is not an unbiased perspective. The author has a definite point of view (which I happen to agree with) but still raise some interesting and important issues that are worthy of further consideration beyond the "preaching to the choir" crowd. It is a well written, entertaining read and encourages you to pause and think a moment without being overly preachy. My wife is now regularly visiting the database the author and the affiliated organization has set up and made self informed choices about makeup, sunscreens and other cosmetics. Not as a reactionary "go all natural" consumer but being able to make reasonable choices about products that work for her and possible alternatives that are less risky/carcinogenic.

I highly recommend this book.

I read this book for the first time about 25 years ago. I have read it about 6 or 7 times since. It along with the sequel, Light in My Window, is my all time favorite series. I highly recommend reading this book.

I think this book was published in 1946, but don't let the age fool you. The author presents the story in a much more real way than many of the modern Christian writers do today. In many of the contemporary Christian novels, the characters are either so perfect that they don't seem real or so have very filthy minds. A good Christian novel is one that is somewhere in between.

Francena H. Arnold, in Not My Will, keeps it real and presents characters with real problems that only God can solve. Contemporary Christian authors should follow her example in the novels they write. Parts of it are sad, but it is well worth reading.

You may also consider reading Searching for Mom, which isn't nearly as bleak, but it is a more recent book that explores the will of God in the family relationship.

Best book I've ever read!!! Loved to read it when I was a teenager, and still love it now in my 30s! A classic!

The plot of this book is great, and the ending is so unpredictable!

This book was really great and very hard to put down. I loved it! It is also a very inspiring book. The woman in this book is not very religous or spiritual but during a very difficult time she turns to someone who shows her such unconditional love that at first she finds it hard to believe someone could be so kind. Until she learns about the love of God and His love for her. She then realizes what her heart really needs to begin to heal and what is most important in life...her Heavenly Father. She learns to put her faith in God and to live according to His will.
An excellent book. It will surely touch your heart.
It is a love story like no other. You will not be able to stop reading once you start.
