This makes the top ten list out of all the great picture books we read to our kids when they were young. I never tired of reading it. So simple, symmetric, even musical. The story? How does the peddler get the monkeys to give back all the caps they've stolen from him and carried up into the tree? Okay, I'm the publisher of One Monkey Books, so call me biased. But try this one on your three or five or year old, and really get into singing, "Caps for sale! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap!" I remembering absolutley loving this book as a kid, even though for the life of me I cannot quite remember why. But as far as pointless folktales go, this one really hits the spot. And how can I ignore those amazing illustrations and those silly monkeys? Not much in the way of plot, but somehow the book manages to be incredibly entertaining for some reason unknownst to me. Oh well. Maybe that is its charm.

Another classic to add to the list of beloved library books we had renewed so often we decided to buy it. It is a timeless classic. My 3 year old son loves it. Also see the sequel- circus caps for sale.

I remember a teacher reading this book to the class (a long time ago!) and now I read it to my 27 month old granddaughter. She loves the story and likes to immitate the monkeys. It's one of her favorite books. Our book is a soft cover, which I didn't realize at the time of purchase. With all its use, I wish I would have purchased a hard cover or even as a board book if it's offered that way.

Caps for Sale is a wonderful classic that young readers love to hear. There is enough repetition to encourage children to "read" along. This can also be "acted out" to engage different learning modalities.

This book is deeply moving, inspiring and challenging. Thomas a Kempis lays out what it means to be an authentic follower of Jesus, not just an adherent or a church-goer. The simulated conversations with Christ in the book are especially powerful. Aside from the Bible, no other book has touched and moved me like this. Highly recommended reading.

Why claim trinkets when you can read one of the best devotionals on the market. I use it to keep my daily life in check, to remember to have the right focus and to live what I believe. This is the top of the charts for a "Christian" work. Brother A'Kempis was a great instructor and a wise disciple. So much of todays mediocre fluff is twisted by society, self centeredness and lazy Christianity where the thinking is done for those who don't see the value in meditation and self examination. Next to the Bible, this is my favorite work.

This wonderful book was written by the priest Thomas a Kempis in the 1400's and is very reminecient of the Apostle Paul's writings by encouraging readers to live a simple spiritual life. It recommends that peace is found in the heart of the humble and that in overcoming the ego you overcome the world. Joy is found in a quiet conscience and you are only happy when you have done what is right. This may also be the original source of the advice to choose the less of two evils. It also warns that pleasure and desire carry the seeds of sorrow. This book is spiritual focusing on living the inner life and not getting entangled with the world. A must read for all Christians or anyone on a spiritual path.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's a slow read, but not difficult - there's so much packed into these 280 pages that you'll have to take your time to get it all.

This is not a review of the book per se (just got it, have not read it yet), but thought I needed to share this. Book arrived with another book (a textbook) in the usual Amazon box, each laying side by side. It was left out in the rain for most of the day by the local carrier until I brought it inside. The entire box was soaked and ruined, tape fallen off and box literally gaping open, all of the paperwork inside was falling apart in pieces and soaked, my textbook was completely ruined (soaked through, wavy wet pages etc - got returned), yet this book was absolutely dry - not a trace of even a microdrop of water - perfect condition. Take away whatever message you want...

This book does not teach you to slow yourself down it teaches you how to deal with your life in a better manner while still maintaining the pace you wish to live. This is a life changing read and I also think if you are in business you should read the Self Deception book by the same author(s). You will not find a better read even for someone who hadn't finished a complete book since college (yes many years ago), I read them both in less than a week. Good Luck (this will help)

I just finished this book last night. Hard to put down. Well written and easy to follow, using a fictional narrative to teach principles of avoiding conflict.

Set in a treatment program setting, several people discover how they are destroying their relationships with their children/co-workers. The reader learns first, how they are wrecking their relationships; second, how to view themselves in a different way; third, how to change AND maintain the new outlook and heal broken communication lines. The Change Pyramid at the end was very helpful.

Essentially, all this boils down to the Golden Rule and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Where people go wrong is seeing where they fail in this setting. This book, a sequel and a much better personal substitute for "Leadership and Self Deception" gives practical advice and entertaining examples that many could relate to on some level.

This is a must sequel to Leadership and Self-Deception. These two books have been of the most influential books I have ever read.

Well, that is pretty impressive. At the time of writing this review there are currently 64 reviews, and of those 59 are 5-star and 5 are 4-star. Really, that should say a lot.

The Arbinger Institute has crafted one of the best works on understanding the root of peace in humanity that I have ever seen. The "warring in your heart" concept is something we all probably innately understand, but rarely, if ever, think about in the way presented in this work. Were all of us to understand this concept and the principles around "getting out of the box(es)" that keep us at war in our hearts, we would surely root out many problems in our families, workplaces, communities, and international relations.

This truly is one of those rare books that I would recommend to anyone.

This book is a great follow-up to Leadership and Self Deception: Getting Out of the Box.

The book is actually a prequel to Leadership and Self-Deception, but I enjoyed reading The Anatomy of Peace second because it expanded on the back story of a book I already love.

The book expands the philosophy presented in Leadership and Self-Deception from a business and home focus to a much larger scale spanning nations and races.

A very enjoyable read. I highly recommend it.

The thing I will remember most about this book is that, surprisingly, it was a deeply touching tribute to his mother. The military stuff is all extremely interesting, to the point where you won't be able to put it down. But the book goes far deeper. It's a timeless story from the heart -- one that every son wishes he could write for his mother. On the outside, the author is a tough-as-nails soldier. But on the inside, he's still a little boy who continually reaches back to his mother's love to guide him through life. This is as it should be. God bless all the good mothers of the world.

I haven't read this book yet (sorry for the 5 star rating), but have picked up on his online magazine (blog). Michael Yon has and is travelling all around Iraq - mostly in the hotspots with the U.S. Army (Strykers), where he does his reporting. I find his weekly dispatches informative and interesting, and will definitely be picking up his book. This poignant biographical work hits you in all places of your heart. Mr. Yon is currently in Northern Iraq and writes periodic pieces on the web about his experiences with American forces. He is a very dedicated and personable guy who is just trying to do the right thing. I enjoyed this book very much but would have liked to know what happened after the car wreck. How did his SF career end,etc. Anyway those of you who are interested in personal military type accounts will definetly enjoy this book. It received an award for his writing style.

Although Mike Yon and myself both graduated from Winter Haven High School it was years apart and I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I found the book enjoyable because I could relate to some of the local places that he mentioned. But the story was well written and interesting besides being informative despite that fact. Charles E. This is a wonderful book, easy to read, logically arranged, and provides a better understanding of the Bible.

.....you wanted to read the entire Bible, this is the way to do it. Being chronological, scripture is drawn from various books as best they could determine in sequence. Makes for a great story and allowed me to put things in perspective.

I first started reading The Daily Bible over 15 yeards ago and I continue to do so today. I can think of no better version to use as a daily bible. Being arranged chronologically, gives a better understanding of the history of God's dealing with mankind. In addition, reading the various writings in their historical context is a great aid to understanding why these inspired men wrote what they did. I keep several copies of The Daily Bible on hand and give them to those who I meet that are sincere students of God's word.

This is great tool for daily bible readings. You can read the bible thru in a year. Loved it and I ordered 2 more after receiving mine.

I purchased this Chronological Bible (NIV) several years ago based on the recommendation of a friend at church. I had tried several times reading through the Bible based on a reading schedule, but never completed the Bible until I received this easy to read chronological Bible.

Wow! It was life changing as I had never read through the Bible. This Bible gives a brief summary of what you'll be reading each day which is an excellent way to begin reading by reinforcing God's word. I've now read through it 3 times and each time, I learn new things about God and his son, Jesus Christ. If you've never read through the Bible, this is the best Bible as it puts the Bible in chronological order which makes so much sense! Enjoy. You won't regret this purchase. It will change your life.

First let me state the categories of people who should (please note the emphasis) study (not 'read') this book: -
1. Anybody who is interested in the any or all of the following: the Whitechappel killings, the subsequent frenzy, investigation into the murders, armchair investigations by "Mycroft" wannabes, and the literally literary withchhunt being carried out over the past century & more to "unmask" the killer;
2. Anybody who is interested in understanding the socio-economic dynamics of the world's largest, richest, proudest and yet ruthlessly exploitative (of its own citizens, esp. the young and the women) city at that point of time when the nails were finally being hammered into the coffin of the 19th Century that had experienced the pinnacle of British glory;
3. Anybody who, after being overfed on the serial killers (Hannibal et.al) produced by the "hot" American novelists, actually wishes to know how it is like to be chasing a black cat in an enormous dark cavern while blindfolded;
4. Anybody who actually thinks that "the truth" might have been out there at some stage, but even with a centuries old "cold" case something can be done (unlike some trashy attempt sub-titled: "CASE CLOSED").

This book is not only accurate and free from all the popular & obscure misconceptions, it is also a living proof that history can be made more attactive than fiction while staying rigorously free from falsehoods. Recommended to everybody belonging to the afore-mentioned 4 categories as well as to all who, after reading some new adventure pitting Sherlock Holmes against Jack the Ripper, start pondering over "what if.."-s.

Like many others, I have been interested in the story of Jack the Ripper. When I finally decided to read about the crimes, I wanted to read only the best, most definitive account. I believe that Sugden's book fits the bill. He sticks only to the facts; when he theorizes, he presents an opposing view as well. He does not claim to know who Jack the Ripper was, but he does put forth a theory. After having finished this book, I cannot imagine that there is much of anything else to know about the case. I would highly, highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading an emotionless, fact-filled book about Jack the Ripper to pick this one up.

I found this book to be a bit boring and quite wordy for my personal taste. There were alot of facts that seemed to lead nowhere. I wasn't impressed!

Unlike most "Ripperologists," Philip Sugden does not have any pet theories to prove. Therefore, like a good historian, Sugden concentrates only on all the facts of the case as they can be cooberated by the primary sources. Very well written and thoroughly researched, The Complete History of Jack the Ripper not only covers each of the known murders in detail, the book also looks at several other unsolved murders that may have been part of the series of "Jack's" crimes. Furthermore, Sugden follows the police investigation and examines the suspects developed by the police at the time. While Sugden does evaluate the likelihood of these suspects' guilt, he makes no attempt to positively identify the killer. If you read only one book on the 1888 murders in Whitechaple, read this one.

Jack the Ripper is perhaps the best-known figure in history whose real identity is obscured. He killed (as far as we know) something between 4 and 9 women in London between 1887 and 1891. He was never caught, and there's no convincing proof anyone ever saw him clearly, let alone came upon him in the act of killing and tried to stop him. He became the subject of rumor and speculation while the killings were going on, and has since been a subject of much speculation and theorizing. "Solutions" to the crimes he committed range from various suspects to a conspiracy of the British Royal Family in some fashion all the way around to anti-Semitic conspiracies.

Author Philip Sugden decided to write this book, and work from as many original sources as he could, recounting only that information he was able to confirm from contemporary records. He generally dismisses newspapers of the era, and tries to rely on police files as much as possible. What emerges is a different picture of the killer and the murders than has been presented in the past, because many previous books have repeated the errors of others while recounting what they believe happened. Sugden does his best to avoid this.

The result is a well-written, detailed, exhaustive study of the killings themselves. Sugden recounts each of the killings in detail, and then spends considerable time telling of the police response to the crimes, their attempts to counter the killings, and especially their interrogations of witnesses. One point he makes clear is how primitive their forensic thinking was at the time: fingerprints were about a decade off yet, and it wasn't even possible to analyze bloodstains to tell if they were human or animal in origin. The police, as a result, depended to a great deal on witnesses and confessions. In crimes of passion or crimes of greed, those things worked reasonably well, but with a "stranger crime" where the killer and the witnesses probably didn't know the criminal, and he probably also didn't associate with other criminals, the chances of catching him were frankly minimal. That's what happened...they didn't catch him.

I really enjoyed Sugden's book. It contains a great deal of information. The author, in the latter part of the book, leans towards one of the suspects (George Chapman) but doesn't insist that he must have done it. He does think it unlikely that Druitt, Kosminski, or Ostrog were the killer, but in each case his evidence is, like everything else at this remove, pretty much speculation. At least his speculation makes sense, however. Regardless, anyone who's interested in Jack the Ripper needs this book, definitely.

I was fortunate enough to be acquainted with the Lion's Paw many years ago by a friend who had read it in school in Florida in the 1960's. In the late 1980's I found several copies of the book at a book store near Orlando and bought 5 copies. The brand new copies were about $10 each. I read the book to many elementary classes, particularly 5th graders and they all LOVED the book. Many parents searched and bought copies for their children. I loaned one copy to other teachers to read until it was worn thread bare but much treasured by all and we kept on reading it. I hold fast to the two copies I have now, one being brand new. The book is incredible and I never found a single student who didn't fall in love with the story. Now they return as adults, walk up to me and say, "I remember you reading us The Lion's Paw." And they recall with great details events from the story. In my opinion,as a reading specialist, it should be on the list of all time great books for children. My sincere hope is that it will come back into print and I pray fervently that no movie studio EVER gets hold of the story and ruins it as happened with many good children's books. This one should remain a reading story. For those who haven't read it, I sincerely hope you can find one and enjoy it. You won't be disappointed.

This is the book that made me a life long reader. It is the first book that showed me that reading could be a real adventure, and made me start looking for other good books. My Grandfather gave it to me when I was about 10 in the early sixties. I would love to have a copy to give to my grandchildren. I too hope it is reprinted. 50 years later I still remember the story vividly.

This is one of the few books that I have always remembered reading as a child. Now as a parent it is one that I would love to add to our collection for my daughter. I truly believe that those of us that were fortunate to grow up in Florida, really do have a connection with this story. Wish I could afford the higher price copies, but would love it to be published again.

My 6th grade class in Tallahasse, Florida read The Lion's Paw in 1955. We were all so mesmerized that I was selected to write to Robb White and invite him to visit our classroom, which of course, he did. We all had a wonderful time with him and I have his autograph in my scrapbook in a box in the attic. I checked the book out of the library for my children but it is not around now that I am looking for it for my grandchildren. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and pay the going price for it if my grandkids are going to read it. What a fantastic book....

I was fortunate enough to find a paperback copy of this book recently at an affordable price. Like many others here, this book was a class reading project when I was in 5th grade. The entire class looked forward to our daily reading, eagerly awaiting the next chapter. I can't wait to share it with grandchildren (when I have them...someday). What a treasure! Being from Florida only makes it that much more so! Don't give up...there are affordable copies out there.

This book is such a great read. It is easy, enjoyable and really has you look at yourself and what you are truly capable of. How you can be successful in whatever you want in life and to continue going after it no matter what might get in your way.

This is a must read!!

This was a pleasant surprise. I expected it to be another "women, rise up and take a stand against men" song. Quite the contrary. As a man, I found it equally applicable to both sexes and all men would gain some useful and important insights about women in the workforce.

It's an easy read with liberal use of personal experiences of the author throughout that leaves you feeling like the author is your new best friend at the end. Should be required reading for every MBA student.

This is the first self help book I could heartily endorse. Sandra does a great job of sharing stories instead of preaching. She gives outstanding examples of how to create your own happiness, self confidence and put yourself first. She is funny, smart and sassy and keeps the reader begging for more. Great resources and links in the appendix.

Remnants of Cinderella Syndrome are still alive and well in the modern world. Females, young and older, make major decisions each day about their education, their family, their home, and their career everyday. It would seem that most women are past expecting that handsome prince to come, sweep them off their feet, and live happily ever after.

With this said, the majority of us still seem to feel that men hold the key to our happiness. We take lesser positions at work because we still believe that men are more capable. We don't save money for our retirement because we still assume that our man will take care of us. We frantically take on the majority of household chores assuming that no one can do it better than us. Then we play martyr, expecting our lover to notice and save us from our self-created hell.

Saddle Up Your Own White Horse encourages women to take charge of their own happiness. Expecting others to fix your life and make you happy is ridiculous. Yet far too many of us are either waiting for permission from our men or are expecting them to magically read our minds.

If you appreciate quick wit, sharp perspectives and strong opinion - you will enjoy this book. I suspect not everyone will agree with everything Saundra Pelletier recommends. Yet, her passion is apparent for bringing women closer together and in support of each other. Kudos to her for that! I especially related to her concept of "competitive feminism" and the "Queen Bee" syndrome. Instead of knocking down these extraordinarily forceful women, she reminds us of the battle scars that have changed them. She encourages her readers to use that experience in a positive light and to uplift other women in their circles. Her tone is fast, approachable and funny. Even if she challenges your beliefs - you will find yourself either opening up to her view or defending yours with even more zest. She has that ability to make you think! Congrats to her on a job well done.

Well worth the purchase. In addition to sound "theory" provides very practical application. If you subscribe to the concept that BEING BRILLIANT AT THE BASICS will get you to the next level, this books is clearly for you. We bought one for all our HR Managers around the country whereby they can utilize the practical application ideas as bet fit their facility.

As a busy professional, it's easy to fall into the trap of tending to the task and not so much the relationship. This book brings me back to that important balance. Chapter six, "Family", was extremely useful and helped me understand that employees have needs that, many times, surpass their pay check. I was better able to work with an employee who had special family needs. This book is filled with practical, relevant, and usable advice on keeping employees engaged. This book is an essential read for leaders today. If you care about developing your people you will understand them better after reading LOVE 'EM or LOSE 'EM.

In any economy, the ability for managers to engage talent is a mainstay, yet few know how to do it. Love 'Em or Lose 'Em teaches `em how. I really liked this book. It was hard to put down. Robin Jones Gunn writes with such nice imagery and detail about the different locations in this book and the whole series. Since I live in California I know nearly every place she talks about in the Christy Miller series and it brings back memories when I read them. This college series starts in Europe and I found myself longing to go to Europe to see all these interesting places she talks about! I want to twirl and dance on a German hilltop just like Katie did.

I found the spiritual discussions in this book very refreshing and not trite at all. Often Christian fiction seems to add a Bible verse in here and there just to have one. RJG ties the spiritual truths and lessons into the story plot and I actually learned a lot just reading this fiction book!

For example, Christy's life direction revelation really hit me hard because I am going through a similar situation as a college student. Katie's comparison problem also really applied to my life and taught me some valuable Bible verses to remember in times of low self esteem.

Like other reviewers said, the one "weakness" (makes it hard to read anyway, not bad writing) is Christy's selfishness. I found myself feeling guilty reading about Christy's whining about camping and messing up plans since I am also very much a girly-girl who doesn't like to get dirty and I like to have everything organized and planned. But when Christy started her internal rants at Katie for just being there when she wanted to have alone time with Todd, I got angry at her. It was Katie's vacation too! Just because Christy wanted time to spend with Todd doesn't mean she had to blame it on Katie and be so cruel (at least in her thoughts). If I was Katie, I would feel really hurt if I knew what Christie was thinking about me!

Anyhow, this was a great book aside from Christy's selfishness and if you liked the Christy Miller series then I recommend it highly~! I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Robin Gunn does a great job of speaking to young people through fiction.
The College Years wrap up all Christy and Todd have gone through and grown in age and spiritually, since they meet in high school.

I remember being in high school and being addicted to trashy romance novels. It was a time before I knew Christ and I didnt have much faith in him or anything else. Now, in my mid-twenties, I happened to pick this up at a used book store and read it in one day. It is the kind of lasting romance I was looking for when I was younger and I found that even now, married and having a relationship with Christ, I was able to learn some things from the book. It quoted scripture, put it into perspective and provided me with a romance that could only be conveyed in paper. I am going to pass it on to a young woman in my church and hopefully she'll enjoy it as fully as I did.

The reason for the low rating is that Christy's whiny, infantile attitude and behavior overshadows what could have otherwise been an memorable trek around Europe. As Christy's character progresses throughout the series--my view may not be popular there--it is evident that for portraying herself as a strong Christian, her immature behavior proves otherwise. She's just not a likable young woman. Her "poor me" demeanor and overly possessive attitude of Todd is enough to try your patience! I prefer truly strong Christian role models for girls like Christy's friend Katie Weldon (who has the patience of a saint to put up with Christy's nonsense all those years) and Sierra Jensen. I'd go on a trip with Katie and Sierra any day, even one minute with Christy Miller is enough to require a sedative Another thing, prominent throughout the series is Christy's constant disregard for her parents and family; not to mention taking them for granted. If she is as strong a Christian as she claims, she's forgetting one of God's most important commandments: Honor your father and your mother.

Alright people, this is a review for the entire Christy Series..... which was a serious letdown. Christy obviously has some issues. She likes some boy who after several months of no communication sends her a coconut. I'm still trying to figure that one out. If some boy did that he'd get a swift whack across the face. Also... Every time Christy seems to grow in God, all of a sudden she starts whining again. After 3 books of this you get sick of it. Every time Todd does something with another girl she freaks out big time. (Though Todd is kind of a flirt). She needs to get a life. She's a slight spaz. Every time something happens to her that is out of the box, or her routine, she has a hernia. In Europe, Wow. Camping for her was definitely a disaster. Skip these books and read some Bad Girls of the Bible, Linda Chaikin, Liz Curtis Higgs, Linda Windsor etc.
