Whether you're an astrologer or just an astrology buff, your library is just not complete unless this classic book is a part of it. Sakoian's Astrologer's Handbook is not just one of my favorite "go to" astrological sources, it's every astrologer's "timeless" professional "bible".

This was the book which actually introduced me to astrology, and it remains by far the best I have seen after all these years, both in that category, as well as a general book on the topic for the whole spectrum of those acquainted with the field from beginners to scholars. It is a serious, easy to read, no-nonsense primer, which at the same time acquaints the novice with the actual philiosophy behind the subject in the form of concise delineations, and that is what is really important. More than that, it is also devoid of the mumbo-jumbo which many use to try and "spice up" and mystify an otherwise very real art, and which has ended up in discrediting it and making it a laughing stock. I will say no further, suggesting to the reader that it should be read directly instead to form an opinion about it, rather than reading its reviews.

ive used this book for over 10 years, well written
and fundamentally sound methodology, some sections
are not fullfilled, since it was written in 70s
planets in later signs such as neptune in scorpio,
to aqquarius , pluto in libra to capricorn are thin
still one of the best, buy this instead of online
horoscopes, because its got the basics, however, does
not do interpretations of transits to natal , or
progressions still i like it

The book is neatly written,it explain step by step "How to Caste your own Horoscope", and interpret it. Further the book explain the importance of not only Sun,but moon, the houses and the importance of aspects in study of horoscope. This book is unique because it considers the horoscope not only from Sun sign, but in totality.Acker & Frances have intelligently used their previous experience as writers to explain in clear, concise way "the systems approach" of casting and analysis of horoscope.Book is free from any ambiguity. The book is recommended for beginners as well as advanced lovers of Western Astrology. After reading this book you will be hungry for the next book by the writers.

I like this book quite a bit. It has the standard introductory to casting a chart, but it has two particular things in it that I have not found in any other book I have ever read.

First, it describes each house cusp in each sign. Normally books just describe Ascendant and Midhaven, but this includes the other 10 houses.

Second, when describing the aspects, it doesn't do the standard Good Aspect - Bad Aspect - Conjunction. It does all five major aspects: Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine, and Opposed. Separate interpreations for each aspect for each planetary combination.

Those are two excellent things that no other book I've ever ran across has.

The only down side is that the interpretations are a bit new-agey, so you have to sort the wheat from the chaff while using it.

This book is eye-opening! I have been an avid fan of Harry Potter for years with many reads of the entire series under my belt. I teach a Harry Potter class to elementary & middle school aged kids in the summer (which is why I bought this book). It is so much fun to realize how deep the HP universe really is! I can't wait for volumes 2 & 3 to come out.

This book is wonderfully organized and easy to use. The information is totally fascinating and the questions range from moderately to extremely challenging. There are also some great pages of trivia about the trivia answers.

For all who want to explore even more into the world of Harry Potter, this book is a great buy. Highly recommended!

I got this book for my 3 kids, ages 11,18 and 22 who are all Harry Potter book fanatics and used to sit around and make up trivia questions to try to stump each other (especially the older 2). They all have enjoyed taking the quizzes and it is both challenging and entertaining. I would definitely recommend it for those who think they are well versed in Potter minutia--you might be surprised!

I'll come right out and admit that I expected this book to be a cakewalk. I've read the entire series of books multiple times, and I was convinced that I'd have no problem answering even the difficult questions. Well, I've been well and truly humbled.

Ms. Maltese has gathered an incredible range of facts and tidbits from seemingly nowhere. The book itself is divided into individual quests, or areas of knowledge, then further broken down into three levels of difficulty: salamander, phoenix, and dragon. I knew I was in trouble when I started missing phoenix questions!

Fortunately, the answers are supplied at the end of the chapter, along with some fun trivia bits. I actually went and double-checked some of those answers for accuracy, and the book was right every time.

This book would be a great at a party, or for a fund-raiser trivia quiz. I think this would also be a great idea translated into other languages, since many of the character names are completely different in each country.

My hat is off to Ms. Maltese and her impeccable research skills. I challenge all Potter fans to try their hand and test their Potter knowledge!

Having just finished this book, I'm going to skip ahead and say: I am delighted.

Skipping backwards, however:

- The simple skill levels provide an excellent ladder into the suprisingly voluminous information within: Young fans will be thrilled to be quizzed as Salamanders (Level 1), drawn on to learn more and graduate to Phoenixes (Level 2), and even adult fans will be challenged by Level 3, the Dragon.

- Hint boxes on almost every page make sure the reader isn't left to flounder if they're lost (or tempted to cheat!). They don't chivvy, scold, or insult, but instead encourage lateral thinking to get at the answers.

- However, the best part might be the extras. The answers are not simple, dry solutions; they are complete and filled with additional content and facts, making it a surprisingly useful reference.

- Trivia Tidbits! Never let it be said that curiosity, once fanned, was allowed to fizzle. The "tidbits" are actually quite meaty asides that often bring in real-world comparisons, point out the historical fact and mythology woven through the Harry Potter books, and encourage outside research and reading.

A wonderful idea for parents might be to purchase the book prior to a birthday and use the questions as a party game. This would work equally well for teenagers, and even adults. Harry Potter appeals to nearly everyone, and this book makes it fun to share trivia and thoughts on the series with friends.

I first saw this book at the library and after taking it home was so impressed with the content. The poems are lovely and the illustrations are beautiful. It is also a wonderful idea to have a little question at the end of each poem to search for a 'hidden' object in the picture (i.e. for 'd', 'can you find my drum').

This book is such a wonderful catalyst to introduce children to the wonder and beauty of the alphabet and the words that they create. I suggest utilizing a real shadow box with objects beginning with a letter in conjunction with the book. Continue the wonder with fun that even your children can help to create ('What can we add to the shadow box that begins with the letter A'?).

Thank you Ms. Seeley. Yours is a beautiful book indeed :).

What can I say about a book that gets chosen over and over by your child? As the parent, I am glad to read a book that is so clever and challenging for BOTH the child and the parent. Hunt and find helps you bond with your child as you seek out the various objects etc. in the shadowboxes. "There's the anchor, Mommy!"

Wholeheartedly recommend this book.

My 4 year old son was severely speech impaired when he started bringing me "The Book of Shadowboxes" to read. Every day I would read it to him and he would point to the wonderful illustrations. After about 4 weeks, he began to say some of the words from the book. Every time we would read it together he would use a new word from the book. It was neat how he would point to the pictures and say the names of the items. For us, it was a miracle; for my son, it was just fun! Thank you Laura Seeley for this delightful book; it made such a huge difference in our son's life !

Someone gave this book to my older brother when he was starting his (subsequently very successful) career in show business maybe 35 years ago. I found it and read it and it was the most motivational and transformational material I had ever encountered. Practicing the very simple exercises helped shape and change my life. Over the course of my life I've read many more sophisticated books by more eloquent and learned writers but none can top the simple truths laid out in this book. It is like the guide book to life. My little book is tanned and falling apart but I will treasure it forever. If there was a ghost writer it was more of a ghost co-writer because Mr. Koran's input is clear, throughout. I wish everyone who needs this magic could find it as I did.

Al Koran could mind read.. and if people would spend time and maybe years studying psychology they would be able to do it themselves.. Al koran changed my life and made me the person i am.. This book made me rich wealthy and well heard of.. My great grandmother used to know Al Koran, and i only wish people would instead of envy him.. Mimic him, Most jealous people say something becuase they are envious but merely mimic him. I have great respect for the power he bless me with. And i know that sometime in my life if he is still around.. i will meet him. Al Koran is clearly a man that has changed the lifes of hundreds... maybe thousands if thousands could be bothered to study psychology.

I agree with the other reviews of this book. I first read it when it came out in the 70s. I was then at a very low ebb in my life, unemployed, recovering from a devastatingly unhappy love-affair and extremely pessimistic. I became gripped by the style and content, especially as I remember watching Al Koran's stage act on TV in the 1950s.
I practised the suggestions in the book as at the time I had nothing to lose! No job, no money, no girl-friend, no success, no prospects, nothing! Within 6 months I secured the best-paid job I have ever had(but it wasn't at first) and for the next 8 years the money just went up and up without any effort on my part. In other ways, too, my life was successful and only at the end of the 70s when the recession came in for most people, did it falter. I still use the tips in his book and can confirm that they do work. I am NOT religious - in fact, very anti-religious but it is a fact that belief not scepticism is the only thing that works miracles. Thank you Al Koran(and your ghost-writer). You saved me from a miserable and negative life. I have a friend who described this book as the best of its kind he had ever read. He was not religious, either, by the way!

This book is my all time favourite personal development book. I have read it many, many times, and always come back to it when I need inspiration.

So fascinated was I by this book and the author, that I spent months researching the life of Al Koran and the history of this book. What I found amazed me:

Al Koran did not write this book. Instead, he allowed his name to be used as it was a good sales tool for the book - and great publicity for him. The actual author was his friend and close business associate JUNE KYNASTON.

June Kynaston was a professional writer from England, and as well as writing Bring Out The Magic In your Mind, she also wrote The Mind That Works Miracles, and Stay Young Forever (both currently out-of-print).

How do I know the above story to be true? It was confirmed to me by one of Al Koran's best friends (who I will not name). Additionally, if you ever have chance to read the Mind That Works Miracles, you will see that 70% of that book is contained in Bring Out The Magic in Your Mind. The writing style is the same, and in many cases whole pages are IDENTICAL. This book was also published BEFORE Bring Out The Magic In Your Mind.

I have known this secret for years, but have never revealed it publically before. However the time has come, as June Kynaston finally deserves recognition for being such a wonderful, wise and life-changing author.

Both June Kynaston and Al Koran are now sadly deceased, but their memory will live on in the MAGIC that Al Koran created and performed, and the MAGIC of June Kynaston's words.

Once upon a time in a far away place, there lived a bad man, a very bad man. In fact this man was so good at being bad that he convinced the people of his country that he was a good man. Not only that, he convinced them he was the man for the job, the job of leading their government. So he did. Then he convinced his people that there were enemies living right there in their country and they should remove them. But inside his government where there were dark secrets, this bad man decided to create a Final Solution for dealing with these enemies within.

Years later and still unto this day, many writers and historians and journalists have tried to explain how this bad man gained such power to do the awful things he did. Karen Hesse and Wendy Watson combined talents to create "The Cats in Krasinski Square," in their effort to show one tiny moment in this ugly episode of history, the Holocaust of Jews, first in Germany, then rapidly spreading to other Germanic countries and conquered ones in World War II.

In Poland in Warsaw in the Jewish community, walls were built to keep in Jews and keep out non-Jews. Simply an early phase of the Final Solution. Separate the Jews into ghettos, then collect them in cattle cars to take them to the concentration camps, then eliminate their existence through crematoriums--the Final Solution. Notice the massing together at each phase, attempting to make negligible their humanity.

The cats in Krasinski Square are homeless because of the rounding up and crowding together of the Jews. The cats thrive on mice, but they miss their former masters. People outside the ghettos, both non-Jews and Jews able to escape and pass as Polish, keep the cats socialized by the attention they give them (see cover for an example).

A nameless girl, a Polish Jew, who escaped the ghetto, is the narrator of this simple, but heroic act to get food inside the ghetto. There are many holes in the walls, the escape hatch for the cats who come and go, seeking mice. It also is the entryway for food. For this particular episode, friends will arrive on trains with satchels of food to bestow in the holes of the walls. Unfortunately, the Gestapo knows and waits with hungry dogs. The cats are used as lures for the dogs, who go after them instead of the food. Food disappears into the walls and starvation is staved again for a while longer.

That is the essence of the story. A great story. The other half of this wonderful story is the illustrations. They are done in pencil, ink, and watercolors on Strathmore drawing paper. Watercolors tend to give a transparency to the subject, providing a dreamy cast. Watson also uses dark colors, possibly pencil, to provide a ominous overcast to every scene, then offsetting each with an orange glow, perhaps suggestive of hope and action. This is such a perfect pairing, words and illustrations to convey a message of action through hope and hope leading to action. A must-read book for every public, school, and home library.

It is easy to follow and you can mix and match pages. It is perfect for the person who wants to use 5 or 6 or more pictures for their pages, but can't figure out how to get them to fit. There are plenty of layout page books out there, but I have never seen one that actually tells you the exact measurements to cut. You can make pages pretty quick and they are really nice. It is a must have, I highly highly recomend it.

I've been a huge fan of Becky Higgins sketches because they give me a blueprint for my scrapbooking layouts. A friend recommended Cherish to me, and I was skeptical at first because I've bought too many scrapbook "how-to" books over the years. Nevertheless, I bought it, and I loved it immediately. If you love Becky Higgins' sketches, you absolutely flip over this book. Not only do you get a sketch for your layout, but you get paper and picture sizes as well. In fact, you even get a diagram of how to best cut your coordinating papers to minimize waste! I just completed a [...]scrapbook for my son's teacher, and I used this book to do it. The final album was incredible! If you like using sketches for your scrapbooking, you need to buy this book.

I have just finished Kelly's book The Climb of My Life and am left truly inspired... It is an amusing, poignant, and motivating read that reminds us all that each life is to be cherished and lived to the fullest capacity. Insightful and inspiring, I have mentioned this book in many discussions, as I feel any and every person can benefit from reading Kelly's story. One of the many sentiments I want to incorporate into my own life is greeting your loved one at the end day with "what was the best part of your day?" automatically creating a positive round of communication as opposed to the typical "how was your day?" which often leads to dwelling on the negative. I have taken Kelly's book to heart - I catch myself referring to Kelly and Craig's attitude "well, it could have been worse" when I encounter trivial irks, and then find myself consciously acknowledging how great life truly is. Kelly's personal narrative left me smiling, my eyes misty, and a genuine tug at my heart. Her emotional and physical strength is truly admirable, as is her adoring husband who never let her give up.

It's not every day...
It's not every day you come across two people with such unconditional love and devotion for each other; it's not every day you come across someone who is able to embrace courage, hope, and determination with death staring her in the face; it's not every day you come across someone who has turned "giving back" into their main mission in life; and it's not every day you come across someone who has not only been given a second chance at life via a heart transplant but has lived a life which most can only dream to attain.

"The Climb of My Life" is a well written, captivating journey that will be hard to put down. It reveals to the reader, through humor and tears, how Kelly has faced adversity and pursued her journey. I am inspired by her courage and strength to step out beyond my boundries. Thank you Kelly for this.

The same as I mentioned about the Color Atlas of Pharmacology, it's the best way to review Physiological functions in just one scheme for each topic. Totally recommended.

Even considering that I am not a native english speaker, I found this book easier to understand than Guyton in spanish. Now that I teach physiology I use it to remember concepts at a glance, and to better explain concepts (a good image comes in handy sometimes). I also have encouraged my students to get it, as it does not only make it easier to understand physiology, but also is very helpful in improving comprehension of medical english, which is a must nowadays. (how about that for a new use for this book!!!!!!)

#1 Guide to Physiology

A very complete guide to physiology which can be used by researchers, graduate students and MD students alike with incredible detail included that may be beyond what is needed even. That makes it a great reference.

Its unbelievable that its in pocket handbook format.

My top rated physiology books would be:

Color atlas (this guide)
Applied Surgical Physiology Vivas (+ Critical Care Edition) (Kanani)
Berne and Levy

In that order exactly.

Back to the book:

Invaluable and truly an amazing, complete and extremely detailed carry-around reference.

state-of-the-art

What makes this book a state-of-the-art is not its content, but the manner in which it's presented. Each subject only occupies one page of text, & opposite is a page for illustrations. But it's not the illustrations that explains the text, but rather the text that explains the illustrations (a method created by Leonardo da Vinci). This not only helps in recalling of the subject, but also helps in sustaining an interest in it. An ingenious beautiful book.

Can't live without it.

This and it's companion book on Pathophysiology are the best investments I have made since entering medical school. The illustrations are great (and the diagrams set a standard that neither Guyton or Boron and Boulep can match) , but it's Silbernagl's presentation that makes them so amazing. I'm constantly finding new layers of information that I missed even after 4 or 5 passes. Buy Boron for this year's theories and break throughs, but this is the book you will be returning to.

Excellent adventure novel based on actual people and events.

Mr Schroder has captured the rough and tumble times back when America stumbled into what became known as the Philippine Insurrection. Once the Spanish were routed from the Philippines, the US entered into a bloody and merciless conflict between the inhabitants and Americans. The actual events dealing with one Private David Fagan, an African-American soldier faced with the issues of suppressing Filipinos fighting for their freedom and the relentless and segregated American army and its brutal campaign. Interesting plotline, good characters, actual events and people blended into an excellent and compelling adventure that begs for life on the big screen.
The author survived combat in Vietnam and knows what fear and death is like and blends those into this powerful story of Fagan as he faces his own fears and deserts and fights against his own countrymen, many of whom dispise him for the color of his skin.
One problem I did have with this excellent novel was the fact that nearly all the African American soldiers speak English as if they just graduated from a well to do college rather than the broken and slang-riddled verbiage that should have been used in the text. Aside from that, the action is brisk, the fear tangible and the humidity almost soaks into the readers finger tips.

Honorable Desertion?

We label soldiers like David Fagen deserters. How do we label a nation which first commits treason against a segment of its own citizenry? In this novel, perhaps the most honest account of Teddy Roosevelt's ill-considered war of conquest in the Philippines, Schroder illuminates not only the politics of the invasion, but the human story of one black soldier's heart-wrenching response to being ordered to suppress his 'cousins of color' on behalf of his own suppressor. A veteran of another Asian jungle war, Schroder's landscapes, villages, and cultural insights ring true. His stirring story of a heroic act of conscience is a lesson that even the best of nations must heed. Perhaps Cousins of Color packs such an emotional whallop because we come to understand, in this forgotten chapter of US history, the danger of allowing a president to use the military as a plaything or an instrument of wealth-building. If only the heads on Mt. Rushmore could speak, it's clear that Roosevelt and Lincoln would have much to disagree about.

In the tradition of Stone and Vidal, this vivid and visceral biographical novel took me on a page turning journey into the depths of David Fagen's soul. William Schroder has painted a truly astonishing story of one man's agonizing and passionate clash between love of country and personal truth. Set in the Philippines during the Spanish American War, this country's frist encounter with "liberating occupation," I found myself engrossed in this remarkable story and asking the same difficult questions that must be facing many Americans in today's challenging times. When Hollywood makes this into a movie, and surely it will, I pray it will be as honest as this work so richly deserves. Excellent, absolutely excellent.

Engrossing history and character study

"Cousins of Color" is a fascinating and enlightening view of America's involvement in the Philippines at the turn of the century. President McKinley has sent US military forces to Manila for 'humanitarian' purposes. This is not a book about the men who make important decisions but about the trickle down effect those decisions have on other men. Schroder's story allows the reader to see what doors are opened by the arrogance of those in power. We see the dark side of some men manifest itself and the strength of character in others come through. It's a book about choices and one man choosing to do what is right over what is expedient.

I must admit I knew very little about the period in time described in Cousins of Color prior to reading the book. Afterward, I felt as if a window to the time period had been opened for me, and I could clearly see the inhabitants going about their lives! The story is fascinating, and I quickly became involved in the tale and the lives of the protagonists. In particular, the dialog seemed unforced and genuine, and the plot flowed seamlessly to the stunning finale. I look forward to more books by this talented author.

The beautiful designs in this book come in a wide range of difficulty levels, making it enjoyable for both the beginner and the advanced stitcher. It also provides several different types of projects, from towels to tablecloths, tapestries to framed designs. Directions for how to make these different projects appear in the back of the book as well as a helpful guide to stitches for those just starting out. I beautiful collection fit for any stitcher who enjoys Asian art.

Great collection of Japan-inspired cross-stitch projects! Illustrations are in excellent color, stitching charts are very large, i.e. for those projects A4 or larger size, the stitching chart is split between 3-4 pages, each containing a quarter of the design. I spent about 2 days just enjoying the book itself and now I can't wait to start on my very first project. As an admirer of "everything Japanese" I also really liked that the author wrote up a sort of cultural intro to each design, explaining her choices of colors, etc. as it relates to Japanese tradition.

Wonderfully detailed, no matter the size

I bought this book at Borders, and my mom and I got so excited over it. Finally, a cross-stitch book devoted to just oriental patterns! Once I got it home, I couldn't wait to get started on one. The toughest decision was which one to start first!

The great thing about this book is that beginners and more advanced stitchers can find enjoyment in the designs. And thankfully, small patterns does not equal too-simplistic designs. Even the small ones, 2"x3" are beautiful. And the larger ones are detailed without being too difficult (no having to combine two colors for shading purposes). They even give you instructions in the back on how to turn the finished products into pillows, bags, and other little things. Because the small ones are all around the same size, the possibilities are numerous. I've had the book for about a year, and so far I have made one of the large designs and a small one, and I am currently working on the design featured on the front cover. A little tip: if your eyes can stand using 18 count fabric, the end result looks SO much better than 14 count. But either way, it's a spectacular book and is well worth the money. I couldn't recommend it more.

Beautiful but use other fabric

The designs are beautiful, but the recommended fabric is Rustico Aida by Zweigart. This fabric is very difficult to get, and not one I'd use for showcase stitching--which these could be. I would recommend stitching these on a linen evenweave.
