Simple to use, including ample space for taking notes. Gives a great outline of all the countries of the world (so many I had never heard of!) and a quality selection of their truly creative websites. Bon voyage!

Synopsis

At first glance, Operation Oboe would appear a historical novel. Delving deeper, however, it is much more: it is validation of the past. It is a window through which we can view a time when ordinary people had the courage to do extraordinary things in exceptional circumstances.

It is a story that Miller Caldwell always felt that he should tell, about his brave Aunt Fleur and her niece Vera, in order to record forever their courage and heroism during the two Great Wars.

Miller skillfully recaptures events in 1914 when, in Germany at the outset of the First World War, a young Scottish girl who happened to be visiting relatives when the war was declared is smuggled out of the country by courageous sympathizers. Vera flees for her life but what of the fate of her Aunt Fleur and her other German relatives?

Aunt Fleur survives the experience of war in Germany under house arrest and goes on to give birth to a son. During traumatic times in her life, not least the death of her husband, her love of music sustains her and her precious Oboe is always her trusty companion.

With her son grown up and absorbed into Hitler's Nazi youth, Fleur finds that she is offered both a challenge and an exciting opportunity to travel. This venture leads her on a fervent journey to the African Gold Coast, where she finds herself in the midst of the Second World War acting undercover as an anthropologist.

Her assignment is named "Operation Oboe", thus initiating what will become an incredible mission of both diplomatic importance and personal enlightenment.

To record historic events and the lives of people that have shaped history for future generations, is a wonderful thing to do and Caldwell has recounted this particular story with an attention to detail that has obviously come from extensive research.

His prose and descriptions of colorful places are delightful and poignant moments are so sensitively expressed that I have to admit to at times being moved to tears.

So as I close the cover of Operation Oboe and heartily recommend it to you as an exciting, edifying read, I am left with this one thought: If Operation Oboe was to be made into a film then I wonder who would play Fleur? Perhaps, Kate Beckinsale or Kate Winslett?

For reasons that I am not quite sure of I nicknamed Joyce Collin-Smith to 'Miss Marple of the Occult'. Perhaps it was because, like Agatha Christie's famous figure, she has got on in her years, but has retained a very sharp wit? Or perhaps even more because she is very much to the point in a similar kind and gentle, but firm, fashion? Or was it because she has found out things that many others, in spite of hearing from them, have not really discovered?

The Pathless Land is written in an 'unobtrusive' way. One of my first impressions was that Joyce Collin-Smith is not selling me any of the ideas she is writing about. She says it herself by asking the reader to test her knowledge and not to believe. This approach had an interesting effect on my reading of the book - I started to make discoveries myself!

The book is full of the writer's own discoveries, which she openly wants to share with the reader - as her friend - and she has a lot to share. Joyce Collin-Smith's search with the questions 'who am I?', 'what am I supposed to be doing?' and 'what do I want?', which she writes in the first paragraph of Chapter One, led her into contact with many teachers of the way. She got deeply involved with the different teachings, and when she had learned what was taught, she managed to get out of the teacher-pupil situation and was able to go on her journey in the 'pathless land', where no other man than each of us in ourselves is the master.

Her online book 'Call No Man Master' was an autobiographic book. 'The Pathless Land' contains the results of a lifetime's search for truth.

It is a beautiful book!

This is a great workbook for my Allied Health Pharmacology class. It makes a great supplement to the textbook it accompanies.

I have used this text to teach a conceptual physics course. We had been using the 10th edition of Hewitt. This text is shorter by some 13 chapters and gives students better than half a chance at getting through all the topics that should be covered in a 15-week semester course in introductory physics for non-science majors - including discussion of relativity and modern physics.

The convenient 8.5" x 11" format, and well done pictures and graphics make this text a "keeper" as a reference for introductory physics. (It might even make an interesting "coffee table" science reference.) Explanations and examples are clear and work well from the chapter content. Following end-of-chapter summaries, there are conceptual questions, exercises and "take home" experiments. Available online support is well done and easy to access. (However, the available PowerPoints are not done very well. They require a lot of editing or re-writing.)
