This Book is Must Reading for Online Investors!
Helpful Votes: 39 out of 39 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-16
Online Investing the Smart Way provides a wealth of information for investors who want to take advantage of what online investing offers. I found excellent internet sites for investors, advice on how to choose a good online broker (with information provided about some of the best). The chapter devoted to screening for investment opportunities shows how to use the same tools that professionals use -- and where to find them at several top Web sites. I also liked the material about online scams and how to avoid them, as well as many helpful investing tips. The book includes a wealth of information that includes stock market strategies, ways to minimize and defer taxes, retirement plan strategies, day trading, and much much more. The author covers all the basics of investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, and shows how to put together a complete portfolio of investments without paying high commissions and putting up with stock salesmen. This great book should help a lot of people invest more profitably.

A tangible approach to Online Journalism
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-20
Jim Hall has provided us with one of the finest analyses of the implication of the Internet for journalistic practices. After reading several books labelled under the this same subject, I was feeling very frustrated to find out that many of them were only re-packaged manuals of web design, that made few notes for journalist. Jim Hall's "Online Journalism" is a promising exception that will surely become a classic on the subject. As a journalist myself who has practiced in all media, including electronic versions and new media, I find Hall's book profoundly inspiring and deeply evocative. The book provides a holistic and critical view of the issue; he studies explores examples from all over the world and provides an impressive amount of evidence to sustain his arguments. Hall has accomplished a complete exploration, description and analysis that is sure to become a valuable reference tool and will provide a solid foundation for those interested in the subject.

First: Mona is an awesome facilitator. If all online faciltators would take cue from Mona, their classes would be much more successful! (I am a seasoned online learner so I can judge this fact.)
Second: In the future, when I become an online facilitator, Mona's insights will be the ones I take to heart and apply to my own online classroom.
Third: Mona has a wealth of experience to draw from. Therefore, her intuition is based on tried and true means of helping adults learn in an intensse environment that can leave the student behind quickly.
Thanks Mona!!!

Unlearning and Learning
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-17
Dede is a Harvard Education professor writing about the online gap. One big point he makes is how some experienced teachers have a more difficult time "unlearning" things and that it is easier to know nothing and learn new things than to unlearn and learn a new thing. He implies how some school's have focused on workshops too much on things such as classroom management and other social political issues when more online training would be appropriate. He even made a video about unlearning in particular, about 3.5 minutes long.

Within the book are various models for various fields on how implementation of all kinds of curriculum can incorporate online material in effective ways. His strategy to get around the gap is to have training paid for teachers in which they take a class which relates to a project that they would incorporate in their class. e-Mentoring for Student Success (eMSS) is an example which incorporates Science and online courses that is used from the book. eMSS plans on integrating mathematics, but this has not been done yet. Many of the programs mentioned seem to have most of a focus on Math, Science, and English. History is mentioned in a few programs at least, but as these programs are pretty new, some programs may not have a lot to offer for your curriculum type. It is a good read to show you some things that are out there that be used to integrate with online learning.

Highly Recommended for Online Research

As a computer geek recently turned anthropologist, I have been frustrated by much of the material I encounter that deals with aspects of the online culture. I have grown to have very low expectations of academic papers as well as books, so it was a surprise and delight to encounter ONLINE SOCIAL RESEARCH METHODS.

Here is a set of authors and an editor who understand virtual life; who niether glamorize nor minimize the impact. Cases and research are presented clearly, and it's easy for a relative novice who wants to research social aspects of the internet to understand the processes and pitfalls. Various approaches (including lurking) are presented in a clear and understandable style. Best of all, there's a chapter on how to do and survive the IRB review and on the ethical considerations that researchers need to be aware of.

The book is both well written and well edited (if you're picking this book up and don't have a background in either anthropology or social sciences, you'll want to read this one with your browser open to get quick definitions of some of the specialized words.)

The geek in me was relieved to find that the authors actually understood the terminology and the environments they are dealing with. This has been a huge bone of contention of mine (my current pet peeve is writers who use "cyborg" for "avatar" or "persona") in the recent past, and the tendency to just "name things without finding out if they already have names" is one of the things I find most aggravating about many of the articles in scholarly journals.

So, kudos to the editors and authors! I highly recommend this one.
