Maintenance and the Net
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-09
The Internet already has maintenance and manufacturing directories of installers and vendors; drawings, field modifications, and manuals; e-mail; FAQs; library holdings access; news and user groups; online vendor catalogs; parts information and purchasing; software changes; technical bulletins and help; and used equipment and parts. Joel Levitt goes on to say that any Original Equipment Manufacturer webless in the second millennium will lose a lot of business: finding manufacturers these days means using search engines and visiting the superindustrial and trade magazine sites. There are already tens of thousands of equipment and OEM sites, findable by AltaVista or Excite if you want all the newsgroups and web searched, by spider sites if you need specific equipment model numbers, and by Yahoo if you need a major manufacturing homepage or web site. In fact, the yearly fee for a web site pays for a single full-page ad in a leading maintenance magazine. Also, the government originally set up the Internet for communication and research, which are maintenance and manufacturing concerns, and it is now setting the example with powerful, quality maintenance-oriented Commerce, Defense, Library of Congress and NASA sites. So THE INTERNET GUIDE FOR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT completes the picture for the author's HANDBOOK OF MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT and MANAGING FACTORY MAINTENANCE and for Terry Wireman's WORLD CLASS MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT.

A Thousand Bird Sites

I am a casual birder, and found this book to be very valuable in increasing my knowledge of birds and birding, not so much for the books content itself, but what it directs you to. It is full of web sites devoted to birds, and gives a review of each site so you don't waste your time going to a site you may not be interested in. It is a valuable resource, not only for beginners, but for the advanced birder as well. I highly recommend it.

An operator's manual for an auction or exchange
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-10
When you think of Internet auctions, eBay springs to mind. But it is only one of many auction sites. And then there are the b2b exchanges, usually confined to specific industries. Ramburg studies both types of entities, placing their legal frameworks in the context of existing traditional auctions and exchanges. The perspectives in the book are predominantly European, with an emphasis on Britain.

She furnishes a useful taxonomy of auctions - English, Dutch, Japanese, sealed bid... You are undoubtedly familiar with the English type, but the others may be new to you.

The book goes over the many details about what can go wrong online. Like different interpretations of sale conditions and membership terms. Or being able to cancel bids and what constitutes "unintentional" mistakes and how to undo these.

If you are pondering operating a new online auction or exchange, you would do well to carefully look over the many details in this book. On a de facto basis, it can be a vital operator's manual.

Internet commerce makes or breaks a business depending on customer sensitivity, data privacy, the fit with business transaction systems already in place, good electronic work spaces and training programs, guaranteed delivery of goods and services, and transaction tracking. Mary J Cronin looks at net presences that have done well by accessing critical competitive and technical information, cutting costs, handling new marketing and sales demands, and increasing revenues and satisfaction among customers and employees. THE INTERNET STRATEGY HANDBOOK shows the successful information spread on the Internet by Dow Jones, Lockheed Martin, and Schlumberger; the successful net marketing by Digital Equipment Corporation and Millipor; and the successful research and development strategies by Genentech. Her book is a compelling read into all the possibilities with an Internet presence. It breaks ground with Simson Garfinkel's WEB SECURITY AND COMMERCE, Douglas Gerlach's THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO ONLINE INVESTING, Mellanie Hills' INTRANET BUSINESS STRATEGIES, Harris Kern's MANAGING THE NEW ENTERPRISE, and Don Tapscott's THE DIGITAL ECONOMY.

Review of Internet Survival Guide - Protecting Your Financial Information
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-28
The Internet Survival Guide Series "Protecting Your Financial Information" is a must-have reference book for anyone seriously interested in understanding how to protect their financial assets. The author, James Christiansen, presents this critically important material in a well organized and easy-to-read style for all ages. Even our children can be affected by scammers when they are out on the internet. With the increasing use of on-line shopping and banking and the threat of identity theft, the author gives a tremendous amount of practical information that can be used to avoid becoming a victim to hackers and cyber-thieves. I did a quick read through the book once, then read it again to start applying the principles in this book. Just the valuable information about setting up strong passwords, passphrases and encryption is worth buying the book. I'm really impressed with this book and also have it's other two companions in the series called "Protecting Your Family" and "Protecting Your Home Computer." These books represent an arsenal and defense that the average computer user can put into action. I keep them right next to my computer. I highly recommend this book!!

This book is the only thing I have found that explains exactly what a school has to do to get connected to the Internet and how to do so without making some huge mistakes. Other books talk about using the Web, and that's great. This one talks about what a school principal needs to know: how to get community support, how to plan site facilities.

Internet Communicators: Producers and Consumers
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-09
Tyrone Adams' and Norman Clark's new book, The Internet: Effective Online Communication, provides a comprehensive and insightful view of the Internet from a communication perspective. Although there are other texts on the Internet, this is the first to focus on communication competence in the online environment. The text integrates theory and practice to help readers become critical Internet consumers and producers.

I found Chapter 1 on the Internet's history the most intriguing. That background information provides a context for understanding the Internet's structure and current uses. In Chapter 2, the authors distinguish the Internet from other communication mediums, and at the same time observe that the boundaries between communication contexts are blurring.

Chapters 3-5 cover the nuts and bolts of communicating online: email, listservs, newsgroups, chat rooms, MUDs, MOOs, and net conferencing. Although most students are quite familiar with email, listservs, and chat rooms, they are often less familiar with newsgroups, MUDs, MOOs, and net conferencing. With more and more organizations using net conferencing for work group and team meetings, the latter topic is especially useful.

Chapters 6 and 7 address gathering information on the Internet. These invaluable chapters move readers out of the traditional search engine to other search strategies such as topic rings and bibliographic databases. In addition, the authors provide specific criteria for evaluating online information and how to cite the information found.

Chapters 8-10 shift the reader from an Internet consumer to an Internet producer. With the help of the CD-ROM included with the book, students can design a fairly sophisticated webpage. Although the authors stress the utility of learning HTML, the web editor on the CD-ROM allows students to produce their first webpage with ease.

Students found Part 5, "Exiting Cyberspace: Implications of the Internet," particularly informative and sometimes surprising. For example, Chapter 12, "The Internet and U.S. Law," led several students to investigate computer use policies in the workplace.

My students gave the book high marks for readability, current examples, and thorough explanations. The authors' familiarity with effective online communication is plainly evident: Adams and Clark don't just write about the Internet; they are cybertravelers, clearly comfortable with and truly knowledgeable about Internet communication. We've become so immersed in online communication that we seldom give it a second thought. Adams and Clark include provocative information that will spark much debate in any classroom. Students learn practical online communication skills, as well as the theoretical background they need to adjust to an ever-changing and increasingly globalized Internet.
