I bought this book to help me decorate a house I recently purchased. It has given me several ideas that I hadn't thought of. I love the way Mary Gilliatt delves into a brief history of each room before sharing her thoughts on them. It helps put her ideas into perspective. This is a very well written book with some beautiful pictures and ideas. I recommend this book for anyone interested in decorating as well as any ammateur decorators out there!

A Thorough and Useful Tool for Online Efficiency

This book includes a wealth of information on how to maximize the time you spend on the internet: a characteristic I find vitally important, because, as we all know, it's easy to spend hours looking for something online yet finding nothing. The book is well organized, and the index makes it easy to search for different topics of interest. The book will be of most use to someone who wants detailed information about different facets of the internet. For example, Nelson and Coleman outline the strengths and weaknesses of different search engines and services. They also include great information about government websites that help in researching information about businesses and demographics. The book even has information about how to design your own e-mail newsletter or put PowerPoint presentations online. Certainly, everyone won't need a 720-page guide to the internet, but I can see how it will be a useful tool for me.

A Timely and Realistic Guide to eCommerce

The MBA's Guide to the Internet describes itself in the Introduction as "the only book that specifically describes how you can more easily, more productively, and more powerfully use the Internet in business." While I'm not sure about it being the only book that attempts these goals, I know that it is the only book, of the many that I have read, that does a thorough job of it.

For the casual Internet user, this book is overkill. There are others that are shorter and more directed to the occasional surfing expedition.

However, this one is targeted specifically to a business market with timely and realistic discussions of just about everything you would want to know about the important role that the World Wide Web can play in the success of businesses today. Discussions on Setting Up a Web Store, Setting Up an Intranet, Online Banking, Online Investing and more make it a valuable manual for businesses already involved or just getting started with eCommerce.

The Lee Kwan Yew that very few Singaporeans know about!

I was fortunate enough to locate the Malaysian edition of this fascinating book while I was visiting Malacca, Malaysia this past summer. Francis Seow's 'The Media Enthralled : Singapore Revisited' paints a very bleak picture of the government controlled press and the media in this authoritarian island-state. While on a trip to Singapore, I made enquiries about purchasing a copy of this book, but I was told by all the book-stores in Singapore that it was unavailable for sale or special order! Today, Lee Kwan Yew is a leader that is still feared by the state, and bookstores in Singapore do not want to risk incurring the wrath of Harry by carrying books that are highly critical of him. The fact that I had to purchase this book from Malaysia, is a good case in point of how tightly controlled this country has become. This excellent book chronicles the Singapore press from it's humble but independent beginnings to how Lee Kwan Yew turned it into the rag of his People's Action Party. A fascinating read for anyone interested in Singapore, Lee Kwan Yew, and the secret behind this Asian Miracle! One of Lee's 'secret-ingredients' for Singapore's success is to suppress the press!

A case study of tyranny

Mr Seow's book is to date the only piece of research that I know which does an indepth study of a much misunderstood state apparatus. The singaporean government to date has been lavished with praise from most quarters, mainly due to misinformation on their part. Seow's book shows how Lee Kuan Yew pseudo-democratic state hides behind a veneer of democratic respectability. How the press and media is controlled by the state and how all independent avenues are banned. He also shows how government instrumentalities are used to police its hegemony on its behalf. An excellent study of deceit. A great study of Lee Kuan Yew.

first&Foremost anybody who writes negatively on Michael Jackson obvisiously don't know much about Music. He single handly changed the course of Music twice. He ruled the last century period. the Greatest Musical Figure of last century period. I get so tired of folks trying to downplay this Man's Musical legacy. nobody can deny the lasting impact he made. he truly is aone of a kind. he owes nobody nothing. this Book showcases all of his Motown through Epic Era material&does a Wonderful job. alot of books want to eat off his name, but they don't acknowledge that He opened the door for many. He could have retired after "off the wall&thriller" His Legacy would have been enshrined for always. I mean Michael Jackson is the "M" of MTV&for the Last Century he was the "M" of Music. ain't too many Artists that can boast or Brag that they have done what this Man has done Musically. 3 plus Decades. if you came out after MJ then you are in debt to Him Musically period. He changed the course of Music in all styles&vibes period. truly a One of a Kind Musical Genius&Force.this is a Must Have Book.

A well told, well illustrated, children's book that explores the concepts of mass and water depth.

Mr Archimedes is puzzled at why his bath overflows when he has a soak with his animal friends. After eliminating each animal as the cause of his wet floor, "Eureka" Mr Archimedes discovers the answer.

A fantastic book. Highly recommended.

Eureka!

By the author of 'Who Sank The Boat?' This is a fun way of learning about Archimedes Principle. He hops in and out of a bath with, variously a kangaroo, goat and wombat, examining the water level each time, and trying to understand why when ALL the friends are in the bath it always overflows.

Well illustrated. And, yes, he shouts "EUREKA!"

As a novice, I was looking for some information on how to tap into the new internet music technology. This book gave me the answers in simple and interesting language. I was able, without a technical background to log onto the net and find many more music sites than I ever thought possible. I have used Dummies books before and found them very useful. This book is no exception. I am also familiar with the author becuae I have been reading his articles in the Circuits section of The New York Times...He is very knowledgeable and readable.

Thinking Beyond the Broadcast Metaphor
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-29
Sellers and buyers on the Internet today have rarely ventured beyond the boundaries of print and broadcast metaphors in the Internet medium. While Internet uptake is dramatic, the business revolution has hardly begun. The real power of this new medium lies in its ability to allow the buyer and the seller to connect, communicate and negotiate in a faster, more efficient way. The dramatic rise and fall of "dot-com" companies was very much rooted in over extending the wrong metaphor, and that misconception largely continues.

In Net Benefits, Wingham Rowan has dared to think beyond the traditional broadcast metaphor and consider how marketplaces that exploit this new medium might operate. In their most highly developed state electronic marketplaces would act like the automated exchange behind international currency trading, or the automated exchange recently introduced to the Pacific Stock Exchange. These systems efficiently and impartially match buyers and sellers, and price becomes a function of current supply and demand. The revolution comes in their potential to replace the current marketing techniques designed to exploit the fragmented and inefficient matching of buyers and sellers inherent in paper and broadcast media.

This book forces us to question the attention paid to the recent dot-com model, the new Internet superstores, portals and the struggle for megamarkets. It suggests that perhaps these are just comfortable diversions along the way to the real revolution. Just as the Industrial Revolution grew out of the cottage industries so the new Interactive Revolution will grow from the seeds of atomized capitalism. The use of the web by small and local businesses for local and regional commerce will quietly undercut the current order of mega-merchants.

While the book considers detailed scenarios of how this revolution might impact a number of service areas, it stops short of perhaps the most profound impact, our concepts and opportunities for corporate ownership and investment in this new world. If you buy Rowan's view of the future, one wonders what will happen to a world of personal investment that relies on ever higher profits and stock values of large and growing corporations. Individual and small scale operations do not require the capital ownership or offer the individual growth potential of today's corporations. The stock portfolios of today may begin to look like the castles and estates during the last economic revolution as their ongoing value slips below their cost of maintenance. The dislocation would be as severe as the Industrial Revolution.

Whether the revolution takes the form of guaranteed electronic markets as Rowan envisions, or follows some other variant, is immaterial. The real electronic commerce revolution will be much more subtle in its approach and more devastating in its impact than anything we have seen so far. Net Benefits, at the very least, starts us thinking outside the traditional metaphors.

It could change everything.

This is one hell of a vision. I read Small is Beautiful which was a great idea but not really workable in advanced countries. This guy seems to have worked out how to make "atomised capitalism" more efficient than what we think is going to happen with e-commerce. I can't stop thinking about it.

NetLaw is not an "how-to" book, but give reader a precise legal framework (that never become obsolete) of net-behavior main problems, useful both for professional and private people.
