I'd like to give twice as many stars to this book, even though its probably the most challenging one I have read since college. The whole layout is very sophisticated. The vocab is sometimes way above my head, but the concepts are pretty intense. The way the whole thing is weaved together is really amazing, even though it takes some concentration to go at it and figure it out. I met this author at a conference -- I don't knwo how he put all this together but I think it is genius. Some kind of modern-day Jefferson. I go section by section and the red summary boxes help.

This book was startling to me - I've never seen anything like it. And I really hadn't been able to see all this information change in our society in this way before. The book has a rhythm, sort of like poetry, but the author uses well-developed academic principles to show how to see the individual in his entirely new way. That whole idea of the Humanterprise seems so right and so clear. I think the way several types of knowledge and insight were tied together is most impressive. I am a nurse, so I heal people's bodies. This offers a philosophical basis and a way to let people heal their own minds and souls. I really felt challenged but refreshed by it.

I loved the convenience of shopping on the Internet but I had trouble finding the sites that sell what I want. Not any more! This book lists over one thousand sites that sell everything you can imagine. Where else could you find sites that sell spy and security goodies, decorator umbrellas and ladies lingerie all in the same book? You can even go to to the author's Internet site to find reviews of new shopping sites and, more importantly, the sites that have gone belly-up since the book was published.

It not only helps one to protect the kids, but also offers great insights for reducing spam, unwanted content, and unwanted visitors. Review of Internet Survival Guide - Protecting Your Family

Review Date: 2007-10-28
The Internet Survival Guide Series "Protecting Your Family" is a terrific little book. Although written primarily with the family in mind, the advice and practical tips can be applied by anyone who cares for his family, friends and business associates. I'm buying more copies just to give as gifts. James Christiansen is a father with three children. His care and concern for his family is evident as he writes the material in a well-organized and easy-to-read style for all ages. Our children can be negatively affected as the use of on-line social networking increases. I learned that sexual predators are targeting our children. I've been sharing a lot of this information with my son because he just got his own laptop and is not under the protection of our home computer. The author gives lots of real life examples based on his extensive experience in the information security arena. You can tell that he wants to protect his wife and children and he gives you all the tips and advice on how to accomplish it for your family. This book is filled with a tremendous amount of practical information that can be used to prevent your family members from falling victim to predators when they use instant messaging and spend on-line time in chat rooms. Even music file sharing sites present potential for allowing someone to have access to the important and private files on your computer. I'm really impressed with what I've learned from this book. I also have the other two companion books in the series called "Protecting Your Financial Information" and "Protecting Your Home Computer." I keep all of them right next to my computer for daily reference. I highly recommend this book!!

Islam In The Digital Age: E-Jihad, Online Fatwas and Cyber Islamic Environments (Critical Studies on Islam)

An important survey of Islam online
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-12
E-jihad, online Fatwas and other cyber Islamic environments are surveyed in quite a different critical study of Islam online. Islam In The Digital Age is the first comprehensive analysis of Muslims and Islam on the Internet to appear after 9/11: Islam In The Digital Age identifies issues and radical concepts of e-jihad, describes its different forms in the online environment ranging from on-line activism to hacking, and discusses religious insights into Islam on the Net. An important survey of Islam online.

Excellent insight

This book is a valuable in three ways. First, it demonstrates that activism and decision-making are two dominant zones in Cyber Islamic Environments (p. 205). Second, it deals with changes in the post 9/11, reflected in sacred cyberspace (p. 2). Third, as I see, it goes in the deep Web to trace the e-content's human face. In fact, Bunt made history by writing Virtually Islamic --the book in hand is a sequel.

Bunt's analysis of the tacit knowledge, converts intangible information into tangible, which thereby becomes a model for return on investments in today's volatile e-world. Cybrarians, Sociologists, Middle East specialists, religionists, Orientalists, historians as well as public policy makers, will greatly benefit from this model developed by an active scholar-cum-Netizen. Any library that specializes in religion or area studies should possess it for their circulating collection, as it is more useful for a complete reading to get a clear picture of the emerging dynamics, whether it is `religion in Internet' and `religion on Internet'.

Insightful description of business-consumer interaction in the near-future
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-21
Ever wonder what the interaction between business and consumers will be like in the not-too-distant future? (Hint: it probably won't include the singing cereal box of the movie Minority Report.) Author Tom Hayes thinks we're in the first steps of a massive cultural change, as fundamental as The Industrial Revolution. Inter-connectivity. You can see it beginning now with the success of social networking sites, and retailer websites like this one that allow for user reviews.

A major hallmark of the future will be a battle for the consumer's attention, with the winner going to those businesses whom the consumer trusts. (Out with TV pitchmen and in with friends' recommendations.) Those businesses that allow consumers to mashup their own products will leave behind those that insist on strict intellectual property rights.

You can see a lot where the future is going by just looking around, by extrapolating trends, but Hayes puts it all together into a cohesive whole. This is a must-read book for anyone, businessperson or consumer, who wants to understand where society is going. And Hayes thinks we'll be there soon -- predicting 2011 as the point where there'll be 3 billion people world-wide connected to the Internet.

I gave the book 5 stars not because it was perfect -- I think Hayes's enthusiasm sometimes makes him jump to conclusions -- but because there are so many ideas and observations here that it would take ages to put something like this together from other sources. And it's well-written, in a light, breezy style, that kept my attention throughout. Well-done!

I teach addiction studies at a local university and find this book a great reference and hope to adopt it for one of my classes. It provides a great overview of the addiction treatment field without being too wordy or lost in theory. This is a well-written book which encourages the learner where many books are discouraging!
