Good Information for Clients AND TherapistsReview Date: 2008-02-12
I was on the other side on the fence, but purchased the book because I wanted to know what Gary (the author) had to say. And I am pleased to say this book delivers. The information within will indeed help a prospective client choose re reputable therapist. The information can also serve as a guide to online therapists, a benchmark of sorts they can use to see if they are up to par :-)
I highly recommend this work.
Final Note: If you're interested in providing telephone and online counseling, this very well done clinical guide will teach you everything you need to know to get started, and be effective: The Therapist's Clinical Guide to Online Counseling and Telephone Counseling: The Definitive Training Guide for Clinical Practice
A new type of mental health help unique to this modern ageReview Date: 2002-02-10
A Very Useful Little BookReview Date: 2003-11-20
The author begins by exploring the ways in which online therapy is different, such as missing non-verbal cues, distance preventing crisis intervention, questions of effectiveness, potential for fraud, and risks to confidentiality. Stolfe then clarifies the types of problems that respond best to online counseling and those that do not. Issues not to be handled online are suicidality, disordered thinking, medical issues related to mental health (such as anorexia nervosa), and borderline personality disorder. The types of problems he suggests for online therapy are related to personal growth and fulfillment, adult children of alcoholics, agoraphobia/anxiety disorders/social phobia, body image issues/problems, and shame/guilt. The chapter includes a table that identifies major areas of trouble and the level of care which best serves them (inpatient, outpatient, online, etc.).
Characteristics of a good therapist are discussed: empathy, compassion, knowledge, credentials, trustworthiness. For online therapy, however, Stolfe suggests additional qualities to consider: experience; an appropriate website with all necessary information; good typing, spelling, and grammar; online savvy and comfort; if the therapist receives supervision; and membership in the ISMHO (International Society of Mental Health Online).
Chapter 4 covers the basic mechanics of online counseling, i.e., the venues (email, chat) and the types of security issues related to them. Guidance for finding a therapist online and the type of fee you can expect to pay are also provided. Following that, Stolfe describes the protocol for the first contact and first appointment. He also explains how to terminate therapy, whether it's due to financial problems, ethical concerns, or is planned (goals have been met).
The last chapters provide information on computer and Internet basics, a computer-buying checklist, online therapy ethics, types of therapy, and online therapy sites and companies.
In all, this small book is densely packed with useful information. Online therapy is likely to grow. If used ethically, it provides another resource for people wanting to improve their lives. This guide will help the potential client in his or her search to find caring and competent service.

More Light than HeatReview Date: 2004-09-25
Written by an American who has spent more than 15 years in foreign countries, Days Captive is told through the first person narration of a British journalist. In doing so, it gives an eye-opening view of how others see America and Americans without resorting to tabloid or trailer park extremes. '...It's a dilemma the rest of us face every time we meet people from the United States,' the main character laments, 'the world is ultimately a better place because of them, but as a country, America does what it wants to do, regardless.' Thoughful prose like this is the hallmark of this book, but its strength lies in the way it shows how the human traits that lie within us all contribute to the very concept of terrorism --- without diminishing or ignoring its evil or blaming the West for everything. In the end we're all to blame, suggests the narrator - and by the end of the book you'll believe it. That's a difficult line to tread yet the author does so beautifully, mixing realism, absurdity and page-turning action into a breathtakingly heady concoction. Equally, through a series of 'articles' and 'op-ed' pieces interspersed at select places in the story, the history of terrorism, its psychology, a look at the world's most notorious terrorist groups and other vital bits of information are artfully presented in a thought-provoking manner.
In summation, this book is for anyone who is NOT interested in sticking his or her head in the sand when it comes to terrorism. You may not agree with everything it says, but its point is that the only way we're ever going to eliminate this killer disease is by getting invloved, identifying its causes and working toward eliminating them rather than spending obscene amounts of money and too many lives treating it symptoms. It's difficult to argue with a moral like that.

Quite simply, this book could not have come at a better time. The only question is - will anyone listen? Or will we remain 'captive' to our inane political beliefs, perverted religious practices and/or doomed nationalistic policies.
Wow! What a find!Review Date: 2004-08-31
But it really packs a punch when it shows, through vivid characterization, how basic human traits can aid or bring about terrible acts of brutality.
All in all, a great novel for a disturbed and disturbing decade.

Along with the book you also get the access to the Student Consult online which I think still needs improvement. The software took a lot of time to synchronize with my PDA and it generates many un-coded letters.
But anyhow, this book itself is worth the price. A must read for new dermatologists.

To begin, I would not recommend this book to anyone who is offended by sexually explicit language and descriptions, and if you are, you may not want to read my review.
This autobiography is about the author, Paul, who realized at an early age that he had an alcohol problem and liked beautiful women. In his search for sex and sobriety, he takes us from London to Amsterdam; to San Francisco; to Bangkok and Pattaya in Thailand; to Manila, Angeles City and Subic Bay in the Philippines. He takes us through his education, jobs, women and brothels in exotic places. I quote:
"Beautiful women fascinate me. They always have, they always will. It's my Achilles heel. I'll do almost anything to be in the company of beautiful women. To hold them, to touch them, to love them, . . .. I'll do anything - I'll even pay (within reason of course).
Wandering the red light area is interesting. It's prostitution at its most efficient. The deal can be done and the transaction executed in less than twenty minutes. I wander into a bar and order a whisky and lemonade. A petite Asian girl wanders over to me."
I thought Paul had good insight not to marry and have children (although he is still young enough, if he found recovery and a woman to love). Even though he's telling us what a . . . he is and that he's not a very nice man, I found it reassuring that he understood the concept of love and had feelings for some of the women with whom he shared himself. I found humor in this book, too . . . Paul's measuring stick for a good time . . . how many . . .s to the buck.
I don't personally see Paul's life as a waste (though others may)-nothing's ever a waste. Life is a guru and gives us puzzles to solve. When you can no longer take the abuse you are afflicting upon yourself, you stop or die. It's really a pisser to be addicted to something that controls you, and alcohol is a master at control. Paul followed what he loved . . . women. I'm sure he had lots of fun and good sex. Whose to say that wanting-to-be-with-beautiful-women is a wasted life? . . . especially for a man who does not feel he can be responsible for a family and children (considering our divorce rates and domestic violence problems).
For myself, I admire Paul's down-and-dirty honesty (even though the language may be considered objectionable) because it reflects real life, and real life is more interesting than fiction. I hope you can appreciate his honesty, too. As a woman, he has taken me to places I could never go and shared experiences I could never have. I personally believe that prostitution should be legalized. It's been around forever, which supports the premise that it must fill a definite need. If it were legalized, it could be taxed and health problems addressed with some control. Men have a need and there are women who want to fill it.
So, the author took a chance and exposed himself to the world, actually. It certainly took some courage. And though, as POD published authors, we may not sell many books, we evidently feel the need to share ourselves with others, even to the extent of expending many hours and much energy to get our book published. The bottom line certainly is not a profit margin. We all hope our books will be read, but that's not solely why we write them.
When Paul enquired if I would consider reviewing his book, he stated: "It is not a particularly nice book (I am in many respects a bad man) but it is an honest book." My take was that Paul is just a man struggling between his Apollonian nature and his Dionysian sexual appetites. There are many worse things in this life than alcoholism and patronizing prostitutes . . . war and greed to name just two.
Paul Pisces is an intelligent man. His story and the quality of his writing will appeal to readers looking for an honest, unique, provocative read.
Glad you're still with us, Paul, and thanks for the honesty . . . so refreshing!
