ARCHIE MOVE'S INTO THE 1950'S

Review Date: 2005-05-02
Perhaps no decade in American history, certainly no decade within the past century is more fondly revered than that of the 1950's. World War II was over and the nation was enjoying a time of great peace and prosperity. In the late 1940's, most super hero comics faded from view due to changing tastes. Furthermore, the crusades against comics in the 1950's and the resulting creation of the comics code authority meant stronger restrictions on comics causing many companies to close up shop, notably EC Comics. One character who managed to survive not only the changing tastes but the comics code authority was, of course, Archie Andrews. But even Archie was affected by the new code, believe it or not. There's a rather funny anecdote in the introduction to this volume about how the staff had make sure all scenes of cleavage were covered up. It still didn't stop them from drawing Betty and Veronica very well-endowed however.

This volume moves Archie into perhaps the era that Archie is most associated with, especially by early baby-boomers; the era when Rock-n-Roll first made its influence known on Archie and the gang...the era of sock hops, malt shops and cruising. This trade paperback highlights the entire Archie gang in a collection of hilarious and nostalgic stories, brimming with 1950's allure. Here are a few of my favorite stories from this volume:

"Winner Lose" Archie Comics #64 1953. Archie buys a beat-up boat to compete with Reggie in a big race. Veronica promises all of her boat dates to the winner. Archie comes out the victor but when Jughead crashes the boat, Archie finds he's won the battle but lost the war.

"Safe at Home" Archie Comics #64, 1953. Archie visits Veronica while Mr. Lodge is hosting several potential investors for a new venture. Archie thinks the men are planning to rob the Lodge safe and calls the police. Mr. Lodge is NOT amused!

"Skip, Hop & Thump" Laugh #75, 1956. The first sock hop in Riverdale as Archie explains the concept of the sock hop to Betty & Veronica. The pair compete over the boy's socks but when they can't get into the sock hop, they have a rude welcome waiting for Archie.

"Going, Going, Gown" Laugh #80, 1957. Veronica is bragging about her expensive new gown from Paris that she intends to wear to the big dance. She then finds out that Betty is going to wear an exact copy of the dress that she bought locally. Mr. Lodge gives Betty $50 to buy a new dress. When Veronica shows up at the dance to impress Archie, he is not there. He and Betty are out spending Mr. Lodge's money!

"Wheels of Progress" Laugh #98, 1958. Archie is embarrassed when his aunt gives him a pair of roller skates for his birthday. Betty and Veronica offer to teach him how to skate but he is reluctant...until he gets a look at the blonde bombshell skating instructor!

"Like Real Gone" Laugh #104 1959. In a bit of an end of the era type story, Archie and Jughead bid goodbye to the 1950's by acting like beatniks replete with all the beatnik jargon.

"TNT Hee" Archie #106, 1959. Mr. Weatherbee thinks that Jughead has invented a powerful new explosive formula in the chemistry lab. He's so excited that he contacts Washington. But it turns out that Jughead was just trying to make nail polish for Veronica.

In addition to the wonderful stories there are great pages re-printing many of the classic covers from the 1950's. It's a treat to look back at these fifty year-old stories and see how the characters and fashions changed with the times. A real treasure trove for Archie fans.

"Archie Americana: Best of the 1950's," is composed of story highlights from the years 1953-1959. Spanning 96 pages, readers will effortlessly breeze through the dozen or so stories basking in the home-spun charm that fans have come to appreciate over the decades. Personally, I feel that the artwork of 'Archie' comics was at it's apex in the 1950's thanks to its great attention to detail and for the fact that character design seemed to have been etched in stone from this point on. While this book will entertain, its true value is in providing historical reference to the serious reader of this series.

Archie Comics are the best!!!! Okay that doesn't say a lot abou them, but They're sooo funny. Even though Veronica & REggie can be really snobby at times. It's still a really funny comic. It's really just about archie and his friends + his life!!!! You can also get ones that r called betty and veronica which are mainly about them. Either way I think there really good. Just try one! YOu'll luv em!!! [....]
p.s. sorry if this doesn't really describe the comics. it's kinda hard to explain, ya see.

Okay, I've been collecting Archie comics since I was like 8 or 9 (5-6 years) and I've got to say that I LOVE THESE COMICS! I have about 500 digests and about 100 flat comics. They aren't you normal "superhero" comics or your Garfield type comics that are only a strip long. These stories run about 4-7 pages long each (there are a lot of stories in a digest comic, even more in a double-digest), except the many part ones which can run up to like 20-30 pages. There are also little page joke ones scattered throughout the books. These comics are funny and very enjoyable to read. Some of the characters and problems you can relate to, while others are just plain outragious and funny! The characters are each well planned out. Here are a few:

The five main ones are:

Archie Andrews(of course)-a nice, girl-crazy, well-meaning, but VERY clumsy all around American boy who is in love with two girls (Betty and Veronica)

Betty Cooper- a too nice, typical girl next door girl who loves Archie with all her heart. her best friend and worst rival is Veronica

Veronica Lodge- snotty, daddy's little rich girl whos father is a zillionaire! but underneath it all, she has a heart of gold. she loves Archie some of the time, but also uses him as a puppet.

Reggie Mantle- richer than Archie and Betty, but not a millionaire or anything. he flaunts his new cars and stuff in people's faces. REALLY REALLY conceited and in love with himself (also Veronica) the trickster of the gang

Jughead (real name Forsythe) Jones- eats too much, sleeps too much, really lazy, girl-hater. the best friend of Archie, Jughead is really a real great guy. He may look like a slug, but he's really one of the nicest guys in the world

other characters include:
Moose Mason: very strong, very jealous
Midge Klump: Moose's girlfriend, nice, smart
Dilton Doiley: a genious, but short which causes girl problem
Big Ethel: in love with Jughead
Hiram Lodge: Veronca's father, hates Archie

Waldo Weatherbee: principal of the high school, has the same problems with Archie as Mr. Lodge
and many more, but it would take FOREVER to write them all out!
Put them all together, and you get CHAOS!!!!!!! These comics are prettily drawn (and in color). If you buy one of these, you'll be hooked for life! (Hey, they've been running since the 40s! People MUST like them!) I personally would give them 5000000 stars! Buy them and you won't regret it.

A book to be treasured

The intricate, well researched tale of Angel Sanctuary has always been a shojo favorite. The detailed art, disturbing concepts, religous imagery, and tragic love that circle the storyline are all exceptional and this book only makes it more amazing. At the beginning of the manga, we see two "evils" retrieve the crystalized body of the beautiful organic angel Alexiel so they can return her soul to it before the battle between heaven and hell. It seems that in the past, manly ALexiel rebelled against Adam Kaddamon, God's ultimate creation. Because of the rebellion, she was crystalized and is supposed to be reincarmated over and over until her new body untaps her powers and destroys themself. THis si the story of her current incarnate, the mixed up and ignored teenager Setsuna Mudo, whom only wants to live his life as an almost normal teenager. Kaori Yuki's spintinglingly gorgeous artwork from both Angel Sanctuary and Count cain (as well as some others) is truly wonderful, and she may be the most skilled creatr I have come across. There is also an interview with her in the back of the book, and a calendar she created based on Lewis Carroll's Alice and Wonderland. If you are hesitating, stop it. This book should be treasured by all true manga fans.

Once this book came out I was iching to get my hands on it. When I saw it on the shelf at Waldenbooks, I grabed it, barely flipped through it, and bought it. It was damn well worth the money.

I always have and will be a fan of Angel Sanctuary as well as Kaori Yuki's gorgeous art. For any fan of AS, this book is an essential!
The material of the book is good quality, and the pictures are astounding. The great thing about this book is the style of art varies; it's not just dark gothic art or happy pictures, but a combination of both. Plus, it's got an interesting chart in the middle of the book that gives detailed information on the legions of heaven and the 7 layers to heaven and hell (I think they're 7).
Another plus is an interview with Kaori Yuki in the back of the book talking about Angel Sanctuary, her British influences, and an Alice in Wonderland calendar she created.
I really don't think anyone needs to hesitate on buying Angel Cage. Obviously, if you're reading this review, I suggest you buy the book from this here amazon.com [...]. For the price compared to the amazing quality, this is the best deal!

Finally, America is starting to wise up and realize the value of translating artbooks-- common in Japan -- so that we can enjoy the lush color and technique that is usually edited to a blurry black and white copy when it makes its way stateside.

Kaori Yuki is no less than a genius, and her work truly shines when you see the depth of her artwork.

Angels and devils; not all beautiful, not all ugly, but all seriously intriguing and entertaining. This is a must see!!

THE BEAUTIFUL ART OF ANGEL SANCTUARY

Review Date: 2005-10-28
The Art of Angel Sanctuary: Angel Cage is a simply dazzling collection of art from the Manga series created by Yuki Kaori. As a relatively new reader of Manga over just the past year or so I've long admired many of the artists but always lamented the fact that the books I read are in black & white unlike the color comics we've all become used to. Thankfully VIZ has addressed this with this wonderful collection of art from Angel Sanctuary.

Angel Sanctuary is an acclaimed and hugely popular Manga created by Yuki Kaori in Hana to Yume, a bi-weekly shoujo manga magazine published by Hakusensha and now being published in America by VIZ Media. Based somewhat loosely on the biblical New Testament, it deals with Evil striking one of the corridors of heaven and taking back the body of the fallen angel Alexiel in preparation for the coming battle between Heaven and Hell. Alexiel's body has been sealed in a crystal for her rebelling against God. As Punishment for her defiance, Her soul is reincarnated as a human being over and over in a never ending loop where she dies violently, always at a young age. As the story begins Alexiel has been reincarnated as a teenager named, Setsuna Mudou who is the Messiah prophesied to save humanity in the Black Book of Revelation.

This beautifully illustrated hardcover book shows off Kaori's amazing talent as a digest sized, black & white book simply cannot do. Filled with the characters from the story, Kaori's stunning use of color makes these full page, and two-page illustrations suitable for framing (but don't tear up your book!) The illustrations run the gamut from dark gothic, to deeply sad, to wryly humorous as Kaori is able to evoke all of these emotions through her wonderfully expressive art. In addition to the art, there is a reference section in the middle detailing all the main characters of Angel Santuary, broken down by both Heaven and Hell. Also included are cutaway diagrams of the upper and lower planes and the hierarchy of angels.

Finally, there is a lengthy interview with Kaori where she discusses her work as well as her influences. Kaori reveals her love for Lewis Carroll's original Alice in Wonderland story, particularly Carroll's rather moody art, which is far different than what is displayed in the animated versions of his tale. Included is the calendar that she created based on Alice in Wonderland. Kaori also reveals her thoughts on ghosts and things spiritual and makes for a nice accompaniment to the art. It's a gorgeous book that includes a gold-lettered front cover. Simply a must have for fans of Angel Sanctuary or any fan of Manga art.

Beautiful art from a beautiful series!

If you are a fan of Angel Sanctuary or Kaori Yuki, then this artbook is a must-have. If you've read any of her manga, then you already know what an amazing artist Kaori Yuki is, but these pictures look even better because they are in full-color! These stunning, intricately detailed pictures show many of the different characters in Angel Sanctuary, sometimes amidst poignant imagery and symbolism, sometimes posing with other characters, and sometimes just by themselves, but even then their facial expressions are so real that no other details are needed. Like the series, the mood of the artbook ranges from happy and laid-back to dark and depressing to creepy and mysterious. But having such varied themes doesn't make the book seem disjointed, it actually makes it seem more complete.

Of course this book would be worth buying for the beautiful artwork alone, but it also includes a really helpful reference guide for the Angel Sanctuary series, including brief descriptions of nearly 40 important characters and where they rank in the hierarchy of heaven or hell, and explanations of different places and events from the manga. Considering how complex the series is, I think it's great to have such an easily accessible guide sitting next to my bed when I'm reading, in case I need to refresh my memory. The artbook also contains an extensive interview with Kaori Yuki (in English, don't worry) that's both interesting and informative.

The gorgeous art and all the cool extras that come with it are more than worth this book's price. Even if you aren't a fan of Kaori Yuki or her work, after looking through Angel Cage, you probably will be.

This book does have a lot of beautiful pictures. But most of them you have probably already seen before or can find scanned on the internet. The reason why I only gave it 4 stars is because there was a little to much white space on some of the pages and I did not like the pictures that span over 2 pages since this is a paper bound. Then paper it was printed on is good quallity and you will probably fiind the cheapest copy from amazon. If your a big fan of Cardcaptor Sukura then buy this book. (there are a few pictures with other characters to but the focuse is on Sukura)

Another CCS item worth getting.

I do think this artbook isn't as good as the other ones because it doesn't have a poster or a mini comic. However, it's still worth gettig no matter what. Also, this includes pictures from both season arcs and pictures from the first and second movie. And yes, it does include the Clamp notes, like the other two do.
I've probely been a ccs fan for more than 3 years and I've started a great collection which incudes{ this is the most stuff I own}: 7 artbooks and all 12 comics, plus more. I even preordered the second Cardcaptor Sakura movie.

I'm an artist, and I bought this book because I like to see how other artists work. This book has lots of sketches by Miyazaki, who is tremendously facile at sketching. He also adds loose watercolor washes to some pictures. I'd like to see him at work, because it all looks so effortless. This book can be easily be mistaken as another Pixar artbook. The quality and selection of art included is huge.

There's lots of character and set design. Interestingly, there are pages with characters and photos of materials they used for texturing their 3D models. Tips are given on how texturing is approached on the film.

You'll see characters evolve from pencil drawings to 3D models and clay. They have included a few photos of rendered models without colours and textures, which I thought was quite cool.

Hundreds of drawings fill the pages. You won't see a lot of movie stills, which is great, of course.

Blue Sky Studio takes you through the process of creating and art directing the design of the movie. It's well worth the money for any artbook collectors. There's plenty to read and look at.

There are some pictures of the book on my blog. Just do a search on "parka blogs robots art"

great art inside

Has some really nice work inside and it's nice to see the process they went through making the movie.

Beautiful record of Robots evolution

If you are a fan of the Art of Pixar books, Robots is easily on par. It has some of the most talented, amazing and awe-inspiring pre-vis work I have ever seen in an art book. The entire Robots world is contained inside these pages, its entire evolution plotted out with hundreds of drawings, paintings and sculptures.

My biggest problem with "Art of" books is when they show too much finished film imagery. Why would I buy a book with the same images from the movie? I want to know where the film came from, not where it ended up. Art of Robots shines in this respect. In only a few places will you find actual images of the finished CG renders. The rest are raw, traditional works of art that give valuable clues into the films development. I especially like the pages that show a painted character and the photographs used to reference their color and texture for the film. Great information on the film-making process at Blue Sky.

Despite the obvious shortcomings in the film's story, this book stands on its own as one of the better "Art of" books I have seen. A real honor for all the artists who poured their talent into this film.

One of the best X stories ever told

I love this book. The origin of X-23 is a much better story than I was expecting - better than Target X. There were several plot twists that I didn't see coming, and the death of Sue, X-23's "mother" at the end is one of the more poignant moments in comics. As for NYX, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but as a teenage mutants on the loose in Alphabet City discovering their powers, I found the Runaways-esque feel of the book to be right up my alley. The main character is a great blend of street smarts and just plain cuteness. Some very adult themes in both stories. I loved every page and will definitely read it again.

...Would be soo good. I mean, Wow! that was a pretty stupid idea to make a Wolverine's daughter. But ut actually came out great! don't believe it? Just try it out!

A must for every X-Men fan.

At what point does man become a machine?

To me, this is an X-Men-ized & far darker version of `GunslingerGirl.' (which is already quite dark) of the age-old question, `Who is really the monster?' & the reverse of an age-old question, `At what point does a man become a machine?'

I've never been one for super heroes; nothing against them, they simply aren't my genre of interest. However the X-Men have always been an exception for me, with their captivating villains, back stories, & genuinely complex social explorations. & with its thick science-fiction atmosphere & heavy, suffocating subtext, I can sincerely claim that X-23: Innocence Lost is a must read for all X-Men fans, maybe even for all comic book fans in general.

Dr Sarah Kinney has been called to a science institute to assist with the assembly of a new `weapon X', a clone of the escapee human-engineered super mutant `Wolverine'. But Sarah's been numb for a long time now, emotionally detached from humanity, & doesn't realize it until too late--she is creating a child, not a weapon.
The story's backbone is of parental love & loss of freedom; with perhaps the most monstrous villain I have ever seen for the fact that we watch him grow from an envious & arrogant doctor into something not human who doesn't even realize how truly evil he has become, & even more chilling is that he is not an over-the-top villain but someone who you could actually & unfortunately meet; & is aided by a grimly black climax & surprisingly upsetting ending.
There is a potent emotional & disturbing power behind this work & it haunts you long after closing its covers.
Despite some flaws in the art, the bizarre yet vivid color palate somehow intensifies the cold, lonely feeling of isolation, & the characters are given soul-filled eyes that pierce.

So what is the answer to this question...?

4.5 stars rounded up.

I would also recommend the rare-to-find series 'NYX: Wannabe', the first 2 exhilarating volumes of `New X-Men: childhood's end', as well as 'X-23: Target X' by the same authors, though all pale in comparison to this inspired gem.

Wow... This was riveting

What a story. Ugly & brutal and yet heart-wrenching. This is truly an extraordinary graphic novel. If I had one complaint, it would be that the artwork definitely follows the anime tradition, and I personally prefer more a realistic style.

The most interesting story I've read for some time.

First of all, I am new to the X-Men, so I can't very well judge what the seasoned fanatics will think of this. After all, the X-Men themselves don't even appear- except for a flashback showing Wolverine.

But make no mistake- this story is brilliant.

Here's what you should note:

1.) The drama is very real here. It is a highly emotional plot that works so well that it would probably make a darn good movie.

2.) There is plenty of action, all of which is wonderfully illustrated- and note that there is more than a little bloodshed.

I hope this is enough to help you make a judgement. But please, even if you don't read it now, read it SOON. The story is absolutely engrossing and I believe that the character X-23/Laura has the potential to become exceptionally popular among fans.

Best Book About the Silver Age -- Ever!

This book is about the most fun you can have with 1960s comic books without actually sitting down and reading them. Mr. Silver Age has a sly-but-respectful style of relating the silliness and fun of some of our favorite superheroes from that time. It's a style that works even if you aren't familiar with the origial stories themselves.

The book is lavishly produced with color reproductions of funnybook covers and appropriate comics panels on every page so you know exactly what the commentary is referring to. My only complaint with the book is that some of the reproductions are too tiny for this silver ager's eyes to see, but that just leaves more room for the copy!

Lots of trivia spread throughout, fun quizzes, and wry observations from Mr. Silver Age Craig Shutt make this the most funnest book about the beloved comics of my youth I've read.

Thanks to Krause and the Comics Buyers Guide for publishing this. When's Vol. 2 coming out?

I liked this book mainly due to the twists and turns of plots many years ago, that often puzzled me. I even sought out collector's copies of the comics he mentions in his book. Craig is easy to talk to, too, so go ahead and email him.>>>

Being a member of that tiny subset of us who were nurtured on the "funny books" of the sixties, this book was simply a delight. It's not really a scholarly treatise on this time in the development of this mass media, but it is a fond celebration with not a little influx of sardonic wit. I looked forward to each new smile chapter after chapter forced upon my visage.

A great read, with respect but enjoyable humor

Sure, there are more expensive hardcover books on comics out there that treat the medium (and themselves) very seriously. But this book is a welcome relief from that pseudo-intellectualism. It's fun to read and enjoy the author's encyclopedic knowledge of the comics of our youth. Excellently illustrated. This one's a keeper - buy it.

An All-Star Collection of the Best of Mr Silver Age

Comic book publishers are happily discovering a renewed interest in just about every title from the 1960s, and are repackaging those yellowing old comics in just about every format you can think of -- from expensive glossy hardcovers to inexpensive b&w omnibus editions.

The publication of this book is not only evidence of that trend, but in fact evidence that BABY BOOMERS COMICS' author, Craig Shutt, had a lot to do with sparking the renaissance of the glorious old Silver Age comic books. Consider: When Shutt began writing his column for COMICS BUYERS GUIDE, back in the early 1990s, the comic book field was obsessed with "grim 'n' gritty" heroes-turned-villains, ridiculously overendowed "bad girls" and an almost complete lack of humor. Through his regular "Ask Mr. Silver Age" columns, Shutt was able to remind readers -- many of whom were born well after the 1960s -- that there used to be a lot of plain old goofy FUN in the comic books, whether it was the backward-thinking and -talking Bizarros, the cross-dressing Jimmy Olsen, Spider-Man's frequent costume catastrophes, and of course the trend for which the Silver Age is best known: talking gorillas. Shutt made it cool to love those old comic books all over again. Is it any coincidence that nowadays you can buy complete collections of those Pop Art and Go-Go Checked classics off Amazon or in any bookstore? I think not.

With this book, Shutt proves once and for all (as if there was any doubt) that Silver Age comics were not only good, but good for you.

This book is so vivid. Absolutely no words in the comic strips are needed to understand exactly what the cat in each comic strip is doing. They're SO funny! One comic strip has two cats playing tennis with a mouse as a "tennisball." Another comic strip has an owner of a cat holding a bill from a delivery guy for MANY boxes of tuna that she obviously didn't order and her cat nearby looking on innocently. The feline humor just keeps PURRING along! Buy it with confidence for that absolutely FELINE laugh!

If you appreciate felines and black humor,
