A Perennial Reference on the Yoga of Life

In this monumental work, Sri Aurobindo explains in depth how the different aspects of the ancient practice of yoga combine to enhance and promote our spiritual evolution. Speaking from a knowledge that is clearly the product of experience, Aurobindo explores and explains every facet of our human journey as we move toward conscious unification with our Source. One can get the most from this definitive work by moving through it slowly, giving oneself the time needed to understand and absorb its contents, for its scope is both broad and deep, thus making it a perennial reference for the serious seeker.

Sri Aurobindo provides an overview of the field of yoga. This is not a series of physical exercises, but the practices that allow an individual to understand the complex inner psychology and begin to move it toward union with the Divine. After a brief overview, Sri Aurobindo goes into great depth on the paths of knowledge, love and works, and concludes with his own unique contribution to the yoga of self perfection, where he reveals the evolutionary purpose of our human existence and puts the entire struggle we face into context.

A Modern Classic on Yoga

Review Date: 2007-05-05
Of the many books available on Yoga in book stores today, very few deal with the subject in any real depth. Most cater to the popular image of Yoga as yoga postures for physical well-being. Few challenge the reader to a deeper vision of Yoga or of their own inner nature. The Synthesis of Yoga stands apart from the available literature on Yoga, expressing the soul of Yoga to the deepest intelligence within us.
In fact, there are few works of such magnitude and comprehensiveness about Yoga ever written, and probably nothing comparable in the English language. Yet more importantly, this profound compendium on Yoga was not written from an academic or scholarly perspective, or from the view of those who work primarily with the physical yoga. It is a study of Yoga written by one of the greatest yogis of modern India, Sri Aurobindo, who has a reputation of spiritual greatness in India that exceeds Mahatma Gandhi, Tagore and other more well known figures in the West. There is probably no work of such scope and grandeur on Yoga available, and none by an author who was speaking from his own direct experience and realization.
The Synthesis of Yoga deals with Yoga as a means of Self-realization, God-realization and the transformation of humanity. It addresses all the classical yogic paths of knowledge, devotion, works and meditation, including Raja Yoga in all of its aspects. In this book, the term "Integral Yoga," first arises, combining all aspects of Yoga into a comprehensive system for the full development of all of our potentials on all levels of our being. The book shows the relevance of Yoga to all that we are, do, or are meant to become.
As a student, teacher and writer on Yoga and related teachings for more than thirty years, I cannot emphasize enough the importance at looking at Yoga the deeper and integral manner that is so eloquently expressed in the Synthesis of Yoga. It is recommended reading to all those who want to approach deeper or inner aspects of Yoga. The book will transform your idea of Yoga and open many new dimensions of practice and realization for you that you had not previously considered possible. I don't think anyone can seriously read the book and not come away without a sense of the vastness of real Yoga practice. The book will provide you with a deep understanding of the essence of Yoga, far beyond the common stereotypes of yoga as a physical or psychological practice for personal enhancement. The Synthesis of Yoga contains the keys for restoring Yoga as a deep spiritual practice with both an ancient and a futuristic vision.
In these days in which Yoga has largely been reduced to an exercise or fitness system, it is important to remember the spiritual orientation and purpose that classical Yoga was all about. The Synthesis of Yoga does this and much more, not from the ancient past or a poorly translated foreign language, but from a master teacher of the modern world, an eloquent poet and profound philosopher.

A "MUST HAVE" FOR MALE INTIMACY

I was recommended this book after having taken a Body Electric workshop a few weeks before. From the first page I began to re-live the entire bonding rituals that we had experienced over that weekend. How to connect, how to communicate, and how to intimately bond on a higher plane! Although some of the prose is repetitive, it helps instill a spiritual base on which the reader can pull from. A definite "must have" book for the gay tribe who would like to interact spiritually and emotionally!

Tonight, my partner and I read sections of Andrew Ramer's Two Flute Playing together. It was a moving experience for both of us to read a loud to ourselves, a chapter tittle A Ritual for Male Lovers. This chapters, like other chapters of this book, gives very poetic as well as practical ways of understanding, experiencing, and living a life of Gay Love.

I picked this up on a business trip; I haven't been able to put it down. I've spent my life looking at the journey of a gay man. This book is amazing. My partner and I have practiced some of the healing techniques from this book, and they work! I have reconnected to the "gay" ancestors because of this book. The amazing thing is, while the author was writing this book, many of us were receiving the same message. Men Loving Men have something vital to give to humankind, and it's time we start living like it.

This book is a must read for all people, not just African Americans. Understanding that there are definately minor physiological/genetic differences among ethnic groups is critical to receiving and providing healthy treatment for disorders. Knowing what vitamins and minerals are key to human development gives the reader an informed perspective on how to change diet to increase the standard of living. The author has made a solid effort to inform the reader.

This is a wonderful book that details a medical perspective of differences between Africans and Caucasians and will point you in the right direction toward health. It is fantastic to read a book written by someone who has had the "benefit" of western training and realizes the gaps in "knowledge" in that system.

Dr. Jewel Pookrum does a marvelous job of chronicling chemical reactions, differences that are melanin-related and opens the doors to a deeper understanding of health. This is information that we as a people, MUST grasp before the human genome biological apocalypse is released.

I recommend also any books by Queen Afua and African Holistic Health : Complete Herb Remedy Guide, Disease Treatment, Nutrition, Diet, Wholistic Perspectives, African Herb History, Self Diagnosis by Llaila O. Afrika.

My Favorite Indian Cook Book

Review Date: 1999-12-08
This was the first Indian Cook book I was given and it is still my favorite, one I return to again and again. It has the most delicious dal recipies, and the pictures are mouth-watering! I am just a plain old American girl, but my friend Swati from Bangladesh says that my dals are superb! I have this book to thank for that. I love how this book is organized, and that in each section there is a wide variety of recipies. I love that we get the Indian name of the dish, as well as the English, and I think the instuctions are clear and organized. I buy this book as a gift for people frequently, and often people copy recipies out of my copy. If you only own one Indian cook book, this is the one to get. There is only one thing I would add to the book, and that would be measurements all in Standard for us backward Americans who never got the hang of metrics, but it has actually taught me metric measurements better! (i.e. 500 gms of meat is a pound. Thankfully, she does use cups and teaspoons.) Finally, I will reccomend my favorite recipies from this book. On page 45 is Sindhi Pulao - a festive rice and beef dish. Page 52 is the most food covered page in the book, as this is my basic dal recipie. I make this with moong chilka, split mung beans with their green skins, and sometimes red lentils or adzuki beans. It absolutely heavenly! (Red lentils need very little soaking and are good when you need to make beans quickly. Moong chilka should soak for a few hours and adzuki beans definitely need to soak overnight.) One thing I do which is not in the book is I puree the dal in my food processor before I add it to the ghee tempering. This is a special touch! I am famous in my circle of friends for my five spice cauliflower, found on page 80 - you can double it and use a head of broccoli and a head of cauliflower. Page 135 gives us Fenugreek Fish, which I make with catfish nuggets. Again, I use my food processor to puree the spice mixture for the fish. This book taught me how to cook Indian food, and I highly reccomend it to anyone!

I live in Morocco, and asked an English friend of mine to look for a book for me in England which explains how to make good curries (i.e., NOT a vegetarian cookbook). She brought this one and gave it to me for a gift. EVERY recipie I have tried form it has turned out to be WONDERFUL!!! I own both of Julie Sahani's Indian cookbooks. They are wonderful, too, but this one is EVEN BETTER, if you can believe it! The thing I love most about it is that it is printed on very good paper, and there are color photographs of many more recipies than other books. Both my family and friends have raved about EVERY recipie I have tried form this book.

This is one of those theses that comes along every few generations and redefines how man looks at himself. I read this thesis dozens of times and every time I discovered something new about myself and the fate of man.

The pictures are phenomenal, too.

If you think you knew everything about muscle modeling, think again. The author deals with the subject in a unique way that forces a paradigm shift in the way that we think about, feel about, and look at muscles. In many ways this is the completion of Leonardo Da Vinci's long forgotten dream, to accurately model not just the bones of man, not just the blood vessels, but the very muscular structure on which all motion and strength depends.

The illustrations are tops, by the way.

The book starts out with lots of outdated slang which makes alot of it unreadable and strained. The rest of the book deals with Slim telling bizarre stories about people he must have knew. This book is not like the PIMP book, it seems to be stories that Slim is telling the reader of things he heard. Anyways, it is well worth the read as all of his books are.

I've read and studied Mr. Jabbar's 4 book series over the last 4 yrs. They are eye opening and pain inducing. They render the veil that obscures the truth behind the biblical document. Once you've read them, you instinctively want to challenge them (Good thing). You set them down for a while ( a year for me)and attempt to formulate an argument against his assertions. You may even reach out to local pastors, rabbi's, and biblical scholars (as I did- unfortunately many aren't aware of Egyptian Cosmology or astronomy). Ultimately, you then try to undermine the veracity of his assertions by studying astronomy, egyptian history and biblical accuracy. Finally, you concede that you've been misled by the local church and begin to rebuild your true spiritual identity without guilt and fear of death and damnation.

These books can serve as a catalyst for true spiritual growth.

Inspiring study of the wild and crazy side of Kabir
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-15
Most other books that I've read about Kabir emphasize the devotional (bhakti) side of Kabir. Hess and Singh have done a great service by showing us his wild and crazy side. The rough side. The tell it like it is side.

Kabir decried remaining within rigid religious boundaries. God is beyond. And more: beyond beyond. Yet organized religions such as Sikhism and the Sant Mat movement have tried to make Kabir one of their own. This book demonstrates the impossibility of confining Kabir in any theological structure.

Hess' Introduction is marvelous. This academic can write clearly and passionately, while still preserving high scholarly standards. I've read most of the English books about Kabir. After finishing "The Bijak of Kabir" I finally feel like I've been given an honest glimpse of this great mystic who fearlessly urges us to experience the wild Mystery that transcends all attempts to cage it within religious conceptual systems.

I give this book 100 stars..

Kabir was an extraordinary oral poet whose works have been sung and recited throughout North India for half a millennium. He may have been illiterate ("I don't touch ink or paper, this hand never grasped a pen.") and he preached an abrasive, sometimes shocking, always uncompromising message that exhorted his audience to shed their delusions, pretensions, and empty orthodoxies in favor of an intense, direct, and personal confrontation with the truth.

Thousands of poems are popularly attributed to Kabir, but only a few written collections have survived over the centuries. The Bijak is one of the most important, and sacred book of those who follow Kabir.

This is the first of three great books by Gerald Massey on the relation between all the world's religions, cultures and languages and the ancient Egyptian that is, in itself, rooted in the lake region of Central Africa at the source of the Nile. In the first volume of this book, Massey discusses the extremely ancient origins of Egypt and then goes into great detail and depth in showing how the British Druidic culture is Egyptian in its origin. Volume two does the same for the ancient Hebrew culture. These books are a gold mine, They are filled with detail upon inspiring detail. See my review of *Natural Genesis.* Massey's books are indespensible for anyone interested in the great African cultures, the British Druidic culture, the origins of the Hebrew culture, the problems of Christianity, the origins of Buddhism, and the origins of all the world's myths, including the biblical legends, and languages; he shows Egyptian words that show up in a very large number of languages including even the American Indian, Maori, Japanese, Chinese, European, African and so on. Massey focuses through his volumes on the British Druidic, Hebrew, and Christian traditions, and explores in extraordinary depth the Egyptian, and its root culture deep in Africa. Anyone who studies the African traditions can easily see the connections of Massey's findings with the African traditions. Egypt goes back hundreds of thousands of years and comes from the same root as all the other African traditions. All of Massey's books are published by BCP (Black Classics Press).
