Death by insect, ghost, cat....

The plot follows Petrie, a doctor who has dealt with Fu Manchu before. After a mysterious death he is contacted by inspector Nayland Smith, who warns him that Fu Manchu is about. Together they investigate and try to prevent a string of exotic murders The Return of Dr Fu Manchu was written as a serial and it feels that way. The driving force in the story is wierd twisted things that Fu Manchu does to kill people. The characters and plot, which doesn't say much about Fu Manchu's ultimate motives, are just ways of describing this or that exotic death and how it was pulled off. As a serial this would work because the murder happened - cliffhanger. Then in the next installment the murder would be solved. As a novel it didn't work for me because it is so homogenous.

I had heard prior to reading this that Fu Manchu is sooo racist, but I hadn't taken it seriously because so much gets labeled racist by the PC people that I tend to ignore it. Having read this I do think the novel is racist. Fu Manchu's lack of motive is a major point. Basically he goes around killing people with exotic animals, and Smith and Petrie's only explanation for his actions are that he is a, "yellow devil bent on the destruction of the white race" So that was a little blatant for me.

I didn't like this novel because it was built around the gimics that Fu Manchu uses to murder his victims. Character driven is a term I would never ever apply to this book. Fans of Sax Rohmer will want to read this because they know the style and will like it. Fans of the adventure genre should move along.

This book was a really interesting depiction of male life in this creole neighborhoods. It was not an "easy read" for someone who is not in the field of anthropology, but if you can see through the wordiness of the pages, it is really an interesting story. Knowing that the author predominantly focuses on the role of men in society, he occassionally recognizes how the women and children of this society are effected by rampant alcoholism and unemployment. If you are looking for easy reading, this is NOT it! But if you are mildly interested in the role of males in the family in other countries you might want to check this one out!

A little lost gem of a book

Although Eben Holden is the title of the book, it's really about the life story of the narrator, Willie Brower. Willie is orphaned at a young age. Old Eben carries the child away, literally, into a new life in what I take to be New York. Willie records the travels through the wilderness, their adoption into a new home, and the homespun yarns of Eben and others. As he grows up, Willie becomes Bill, tries his hand at wooing the talented Hope, gets a job as a journalist only to quit and join the army just in time for the first battle of Bull Run. It's a quaint, simple story published in 1900 and would be suitible reading for young people. There is a description of the battle but I wouldn't consider it too bloody.

Some good stuff but hasn't aged very well . . .

The English are often a puzzlement to us Yanks, whether we're trying to do business over there or merely reading Dorothy Sayers over here. Smith, a novelist, short story writer, and columnist, has done a pretty good job at explaining various odd English-isms, such as kippers, the jug of ale vs. the straight glass, the six kinds of football, and the tendency to reply to "Thank you," with another "Thank you." He also supplies tidy little mini-essays on quintessential English writers such as Jane Austen, Anthony Burgess, Stephen Spender, and A. J. P. Taylor -- even when they're actually Irish, like George Bernard Shaw. Considering that this book was written seventeen years ago, some of his efforts haven't worn so well, especially the essays on each of the decades of the 20th century and almost every mention of the Labour Party and of Margaret Thatcher. Still, I've always wondered what the Cotswolds were. . . .

A very important caveat

Instead of reviewing this item, which I cannot do yet not having gone through it thoroughly, I will just offer a very important warning: this book is from 1996 and quite a lot of important things have occurred in federal jurisdiction jurisprudence since then. Not the least of which are cases like Allapattah (2005), Saudi (2005, dealing with Rooker-Feldman), and dozens of Circuit and District court cases of some utility. Class Actions have also changed meaningfully.

So, if you do use this book, you'll definitely need to supplement it with other sources.

The present edition of the book is a little below the international standards. Which frequently happens to the books edited in India. The work can be said a "classic" or at least the main document for the study of "hindutva" (the hindu nationalist ideology). Savarkar gives a name to such an ideology and a sort of "manifesto". As regards the contents, everything depends on your point of view.

Very dry for fun reading but great for reports, etc. When I say dry I mean it won't be fun to read just for fun. I used it for a report on the Mashantucket Pequot tribe and although it didn't have anything in partcular on them it had things they may have done or do. I recomend it.

I searched the index etc before buying so knew I thought ,What to expect in this book.It is mainly for basic single point distributors. It does tell you how to recurve a factory distributor.I would like to see what to buy in different points, hot coils and leads. How the top aftermarket point coils compare, how the analog vs digital multi spark boxes compare with points ,Crane,MSD,Mallory etc. Also tips on fusing and protecting Boxes/Modules like on the Century performance site would save tuners hundreds.I would like to find out when you need to go from points to a conversion kit, and pros and cons.(You can always get home redoing points vs a burnt out electronic system......)Also how to not waste money on trick of the week stuff or buying more than you need.I am going back and buying older books on this subject to learn more.If you have standard points, standard coils and just want to recurve the distributor then this is a good book.
