This book is enjoyable and at times profound. It is a nice introduction to the continent. My only wish is that the book had more pictures since I will never see the antarctic. I especially wish more pictures were taken of the exployers' huts.

It may be a perfectly wonderful book but reaching the slopes of Mount Erebus is no feat since it is right outside of McMurdo Station. As a person who has spent time working at all 3 Antarctic Station, I find the book description overblown. I'm sure the book itself is full of wonderful photos as Antarctic is truly a stunning place. However, if someone is looking for an adventure story, I doubt if this covers it.

Not good for English speakers who are learning Bengali

This book is probably good for native Bengali speakers but it isn't very good for English speakers who are trying to learn Bengali. When I look up a word its gives far too many meanings, often a dozen. It does not specify which meanings are the most common usages of the word. When I read Bengali the dictionary really does not help me find the meaning of words I don't know. You might find the Bengali-English section of Teach Yourself Bengali by William Radice more helpful, but unfortunately it doesn't have all the words I come across when I am reading. Thankfully I got this in Bangladesh where I only paid $1, because I really can't use it much.

STAIRS is like a one-joke show. You open ten spreads of whitish paper out of which pop up stair configurations that are especially neat when side-light is allowed to emphasize the shadow pattern. Elaborately bound and boxed, it seems more like a promotional gimmick for Jansma's archtecural firm than a true pop-up book. Compared to a fascinating pop-up like Carter and Diaz's THE ELEMENTS OF POP-UP, or the work of Robert Sabuda, the pop-up collector may find STAIRS a little - well - pale.

This book is beautiful, spare and elegant. It features perfectly rendered variations on stairs which pop-up in the book. One is almost tempted to find Escher-like meaning in this book. It is a must-have for any true pop-up book collector! It is not for everyone, however, as it is really a work of art, rather than a simple enternainment.

Firstly: bias declaration. I'm a Libertarian.
I found this book to totally echo my sentiments on parenting. The idea that children are human too and that as such deserve the same rights, responsibilities and considerations we give older humans seems simple but it's really radical in the universe of parenting books out there.

I also highly recommend a much more researched author: "Alfie Kohn", while his approach to the subject is a bit more from an educator's perspective (and a very well informed one at that), his conclusions are very similar.

About my only complaint on the book is that I would like to know a bit more about the author's results, how has her philosophy worked with *her* children or children of those influenced by her. I've been unsuccessful in contacting the author to ask her.

P.S. I take issue with the very uninformed and unthought-out position of the other poster, who thinks that this philosophy would create monsters. Please read the book critically and judge for yourself.

Some good advice, but lacks a sense of reality

While I am generally in favor of treating children like adults and helping them to become independent, the advice contained in this book could create a sociopath in a single child family and complete civil war in a household with more than one child. The author's advice with respect to issues of sexuality would be frightening to most parents.

"Jottings' he says and he does not lie. The superficiality of this book was a great disappointment. Here's what I got from this book: childhood was nice. School was hard. Italy was pretty. Parish life was fine; but the Troubles were hard. There are a few moments when he's writing about the Troubles when he seems to connect with his heart--and a few where his sense of humor finds him. On the whole, though, this was utterly flat.

Ransom note indicates mother and father involved

Patsy Ramsay should not have written such a long "ransom" note. That was her undoing. She used too many expressions that she normally used in her style of writing. Jonbenet was accidentally hurt and then the parents decided to end her life. The whole incident and coverup speak volumes about the character of the parents--selfish and disturbed.

Justice for JonBenet

Review Date: 2008-01-06
The first thing I should say about this book is that it is one of the vital trio of texts on the Ramsey case (along with the Steve Thomas and Lawrence Schiller book). However, unless you are fairly unfamiliar with the case, I can't imagine that your opinion on the parents of JonBenet will be radically changed by reading this particular book. Those who are convinced of the Ramseys' innocence won't find anything much to challenge this view while those who are convinced of their guilt won't find anything to change their minds. Like the rest of the books on this subject, it needs to be read with various documents close at hand - for example, the search warrants, interview texts, depositions and expert opinions.

For my own part, I was surprised at some of the editorial standards. For example, on one page Patsy expresses surprise that the pageant videos were available to anyone other than the parents and that they ended up being shown on TV. A few pages later, she comments that she had bought videos of previous pageants in order to prepare JonBenet for these competitions. Given the subject matter, I can't help thinking that a more careful editor might have eliminated these inconsistencies since they tend to suggest a certain disingenuousness - which can't have been the intention of the book.

All-in-all, this is a Must Read in the cannon of Ramsey books but it must be read in the context of the other available literature.

definitely an eye-opener

A Compelling, Emotional Read...

Review Date: 2007-07-25
Let me start by saying that when this story hit the news back in 1996, I was just 12 years old. Yet, being fed only tidbits from the media I too had believed the Ramseys were guilty. Then recently, I read a book by John Douglas (yep, the Ramsey's criminal profiler) called "The Cases that Haunt Us: From Jack the Ripper, to JonBenet". In it he describes the case and why the Ramsey's couldn't have done this. He also dispells many myths. After reading his book (I highly recommend it!) I've concluded that the Ramsey's are innocent.

Needless to say, as a result of John Douglas' book, I was fascinated with the Jonebenet case and borrowed "The Death of Innocence" from the library.

In this book, we get a full picture of the Ramsey family. Self-made millionaires who are proud of their Southern roots. For those of you, who claim that they barely speak of Jonbenet in this book, you are wrong! They discuss her birth, her hobbies (including rock climbing, dance lessons, etc)her bubbly personality. We get a clear picture of what John and Patsy went through during this whole ordeal. The media has portrayed John as being cold, distant, and not grieving the death of his daughter. On the contrary, John states several occasions when he cries because he can't handle the pain of losing another daughter. In this book, Patsy strikes me as having a superiority complex (comparing herself to the Virgin Mary, Jackie Kennedy etc) and it is obvious that looks and image are everything to her (she makes it clear that she wears make up everyday, she judges people who appear 'unkempt' or 'in need of a shower') However, she is just the product of a southern upper-class upbringing. She just comes across as very sheltered in some ways and she is very religious. Religious references are rampant throughout this whole book, especially with Patsy. However, I can't judge the Ramseys for their religion, because simply it is not my place to question their beliefs.

Here is why I think the Ramseys are innocent (from John Douglas)

*Jonbenet's name is NEVER mentioned in the ransom note. NOT EVEN ONCE! It's funny how people overlook this fact. Could it be, because the author could not/did not know how to spell her name? Surely, John or Patsy would have used their own daughters name in the ransom note, especially a long, rambling note such as that. A three-page long ransom note, and the Ramseys can't even be bothered to put their own daughter's name in it? hmmm.... must be because they didn't write it! Whoever wrote the note, knew John but was not famiiar with Jonbenet enough to address her by name.

*Why would the Ramseys use $118,000 in the ransom note, knowing full well that this amount would point right back to them? $118,000 would seem like alot of money to a young adult.

*Why all of sudden would Patsy Ramsey just snap and kill her daughter over wetting the bed when she's wet the bed numerous times before and Patsy never lost her temper then. Patsy had no history of abuse...why start now?

*John was directed to look for Jonbenet in the home by Linda Ardnt. Usually, when a parent commits a crime, the parent is the one to direct others to find the child (Hey Fleet, why don't YOU go look in the wine cellar while I check the other rooms)but no, Linda Arndt, you know...the supposed professional in all of this is telling someone else to look over the crime scene!

*Parents usually stage a crime....why then, if John did this, would he undo all of the staging by removing the duct tape and rope from Jonebenet? His hard work at "staging" the crime scene would be void.

This book makes John and Patsy, and Jonbenet more "real" to me. Explaining their reasonings, and how they felt, what they were going through made it all real. I could really feel what Patsy was going through during her panick attacks. She describes it so vividly. They describe moving to Boulder, and their first impression of the city there. They describe their life in Atlanta, and how reluctant they were to move to Colorado. All these things, that I've always wondered about them. Everything they describe makes them real people. It makes the reader care about them. John even states that he always wondered what life would be like had they not moved there. If they had stayed in Atlanta, he said, they would all be safe. This is true, but he cannot blame himself for this. Somewhere, someone knows what happened. Someone who is neither John or Patsy.

They were taken advantage of by many of their supposed friends and past aquaintances. People who sold them out, one by one. Their life became a side show of shady characters who pounced on every opportunity to victimize them. Doubt all you want, but a grand jury could not indict them, the BP could not find enough evidence, their DNA does not match, their past behavior does not match that of a killer, their handwriting did not match (Patsy scored a 4.5 out of 5 points for exclusion, that is a very low possibility) All of these things point to someone else.

My favorite book on the case

Good story spoiled by reader

There is a difference between reading a novel and acting in a play--a distinction that escapes Patrick Macnee as he narrates this book. An otherwise good story is ruined by dramatic overacting and misplacing of emphasis until at times it's difficult to even comprehend the meaning of a sentence. The reading was so bad that I'm reluctant to comment on the novel as I was too distracted and annoyed by Macnee.

There is nothing there to keep up one's interest!

Not a very good read. Assorted characters, all tied together very loosely . . . results in no one person to care about.

The key to the plot is Kate's revenge. She is rich, apparently smart, and has people fawning all over her. Then why does it turn into a shoot-out at the end of the book, with Kate doing much of the shooting. And, of course, the US President is thrown into the mix, along with the British Secret Service and all kinds of characters from Palestinians to the IRA to a crooked professor and a former US Ambassador.

There is nothing there to keep up one's interest!

Horrible Excuse for an Audio Book!!!

Review Date: 2005-03-08
This is without a doubt the WORST and most UNPROFESSIONAL production of an audio book I have ever made an attempt to listen to. Patrick Macnee does a horrible job of reading this novel. His voice inflection and attempts to convey the context of the novel are amateurish at best.

It is my practice to purchase books on tape for long business road trips. I picked this one up at a local Boarder's book store ($29.95) and settled in to listen to it this past weekend on a trip from Fort Worth to Kansas City, MO. I was sorely disappointed! Macnee is extremely difficult to listen to. His attempt to take on the various characters in "Midnight Runner" is like listening to fingernails on a blackboard! I could not listen to his rendition past CD number 2 and thus have wasted the money spent on this worthless piece of work.

I have learned my lesson! I will be certain to avoid ALL books on tape in the future read by Patrick Macnee!!!

I am of the belief that a writer has trouble coming up with new ideas after several books, its a miracle to do thirty three. No doubt there are similaritys. Bushmills, Shepards pie, "Bless all here" are in abundance. The odd part is I still get a kick out of his 007 Dillion. Reminds me of a little Irishman I knew. I'll bet he can write many more in the future and I will look forward to them.

Pro-Pakistan Fascist Nonsense
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-13
I trust that all fair-minded readers will find this waste of paper and ink to be absurd.

I'll relate the following observations:

1) 3 million dead is most likely an inflated claim. However, the number of civilians killed (before the Indian army entered East Pakistan, for the record, not after) was in the hundreds of thousands by the account of any impartial observer (and there were many - for further information read editions of any American or other western newspapers from that time, the U.S. Library of Congress records, etc.) Is that something to be proud of?

2) The notion that Bengalis did not aspire to independence during the British is a lie - many Bengali intellectuals advocated freedom. Even if it were true, and it is not, by the same logic Pakistan should be part of India since no serious progress toward freedom was made prior to World War II.

1971 was a great example of how the Islamic fundamentalist mentality is a destructive force in the world. The continued denial of this mass murder by patriotic but braindead madrassah-educated Pakistani OBL-wannabes shows that this menace is a threat to all civilized peoples today.

This book is merely a propagation of lies. This man's self righteous arrogance has blinded him from his own intergrity. Everyone is to blame but himself, in this book. It is a sad reality that this once brave and intelligent soldier, a respectable military mind which won him medals in the 40's and 50's, will historically only be remembered as the " Butcher of Bangladesh". He has done Pakistan's army honour no favours in 1971. He should have faced a war tribunal but escaped through natural death. How he encouraged his 92,000 troops to rape 400,000 Muslim and Hindu women in Bangladesh so that the population was intimidated is a crime of such magnitude, comparable only to (...). His denial of mass raping and genocide figures that the world news agencies produced proves him astonishingly dishonest. His cowardly army slaughtered 2.5 million unarmed civilians, and caused the biggest mass raping of women in human history, surpassing Nanking 1937. He induced humanity such incredible suffering, Allah will probably never release this evil man from the eternal torment of Hellfire. His role in Genocide is like Her Himler's, and as he was himself a rapist, his troops followed his example. There are still thousand's of rape victims in Psychiatric hospitals in Bangladesh from 1971, they are still suffering 33 years later. He along with many other Pakistani politicians (...) in 1971 are amongst the greatest war criminals in history. He may have escaped Justice in this life, he will not in the next.May this legendary rapist and his butchering accomplices rot in the 7th level of hell for eternity. This book is an inaccurate fictitious propagation of lies. He is among history's top ten evil men count. A disgrace to Pakistani nation.

Make no mistake, General Tikka Khan was a patriot.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-16
In this book, General Niazi attempts to hide the fact that it was his cowardice that cost the secession of East Pakistan. Niazi is the same soldier who saluted the Indian Army Chief while surrendering in the former East Pakistan. He should have fought and died like a true soldier, not given up against a bitter enemy.
While many perceive Tikka Khan's tactics as harsh, they must remember that realistically, this was the only option Pakistan had to maintain its territorial integrity. This was all a political issue, and once the politicians failed to resolve it, they sent the military in to do the job. When General Tikka Khan was sent to East Pakistan, things were totally out of hand, and some drastic steps had to be taken. If you look at the orders given to Tikka by the General Headquarters in West Pakistan, they clearly stated that he must try to do everything in his power to bring order back to East Pakistan.
The fact is that General Tikka and the Pakistan Army were left with no choice but to take harsh actions against the anti-Pakistan elements (just like any country would), who in this case were the Mukti Bahini terrorists and their Indian supporters. Make no mistake, India supported the Mukti Bahini terrorists by providing arms to them and training them and also helping them infiltrate into East Pakistani territory. In this effort, the USSR also helped India while the U.S. just watched as one of its allies was cut in half by the the Soviets.Read Richard Nixon's memoirs and he clearly asks whether the U.S. policy should have been different and one that would have supported Pakistan in this war because the USSR was anti-Pakistan because of Pakistan's close relationship with the U.S.
It is interesting that Niazi blames Tikka for the loss of East Pakistan and calls him incompetent (which is a ridiculous claim because of Tikka's successes in the 1965 Indo-Pak conflict, especially in the region of Rann of Kutch and the brilliantly orchestrated defense of the Pakistani city of Sialkot. Tikka was greatly respected by his juniors and colleagues)
This book is biased, and Niazi attempts to divert attention from his own mistakes and blunders.General Tikka was clearly a patriot who sacrificed a great deal for Pakistan,a nd endangered his life on many occasions for the sake of his motherland. He was a distinguished soldier of the Pakistan Army, and although civilians were killed in East Pakistan, this was not the intention of General Tikka. Tikka never ordered the rape or massacre of anyone, although some individual soldiers of the Pakistan army committed crimes against humanity, and many of them were later court martialled and punished. The figureof 3 million dead people is a farce, the death count was far lower than this, and many people who died in a devastating 1970 hurricane were also included as casualties of war to inflate the figure.
Make no mistake, this was a conspiracy against Pakistan, to destroy Pakistan, and to kill its people. The people of Pakistan were divided, and the enemy succeeded in sowing the seeds of hatred amongst them. Those who were once brothers turned against each other and massacred each other. The enemy won because the people of Pakistan were divided. Let this be a lesson for future generations of Pakistanis.Let this not happen again.

1971-Myths and Facts

Review Date: 2002-12-07
there are a lot of myths associated with the creation of bangladesh.First of all lets take genocide and "holocaust" of bengalis by the pakistan army.its claimed that three million bengalis were killed.Let me ask a simple question. If Hitler's Nazi army of more than two million soldiers killed six million jews in six years(1939-45) aided with death camps, gas chambers, giant incinerators, How is it possible that Pakistan's 90,000(in fact less than that) soldiers could so efficiently kill three million bengalis(half that of jews), within such short timespan of nine months (march-december 1971)?????? without the aid of auschwitz, sobibor, etc. and also so efficiently erasing all the evidence of this great crime. So, i think it must be clear to the reader that no such "bangladesh holocaust" ever took place. This is the reason that the world doesnt take this groundless claim seriously.Only few Indian and Bangladeshi authors keep raising hue and cry ,but in their hearts they know that they are just "the boys that cried wolf".Secondly, india's prime minister Morar Jee Desai himself accepted that the so called MuktiBahini the bangladesh independence army, had indian commandos making a large proportion of this army, who committed many war crimes, which wont ever be brought to the light, because of creation of bangladesh.Bangladesh was a part of pakistan, and it gained independence only by Indian aid.had india not committed naked aggression on east pakistan on 22nd november 1971, there would have been no bangladesh.Thirdly, lets ask whether the bengalis were really being exploited by west pakistan? Before 1947,there was no bengali muslim in Indian Civil service and the indian army.It was the creation of Pakistan that ended the centuries of exploiting of bengali muslims by hindus and british. Before 1947,bengalis never complained of being considered so inferior that the british did not see them worthy of civil service or army. A great deal of economic development occured in east pakistan after 1947.And more than anything, the bengali muslims were given a chance to live as a respected nation, independent from the Hindu elite's exploits. Bengali language was taken as the national language of pakistan.east pakistanis were given equal rights to prosper.Second Capital buildings in dhaka are evidence, built in AyubKhan's regime.every attempt was made to keep parity of east and west pakistan. But in reward of every concession, bengalis demanded more.So much investment was done by west pakistanis industrialists in east pakistan.I ask , east bengal was poor in the british raj days also, but no one blamed anyone.and just few years after independence of 1947,west pakistan was being blamed for all the ills of east pakistan. All pakistanis were brothers and are and will remain brothers.India will always be the mutual enemy of muslims, whether bengali or pakistani. After 1972,how india exploited east pakistan as a colony must be enough to reveal the intentions of the hindu state. All i mean to say is that both east and west pakistan were at fault and thus india took advantage and two brothers broke away. It was the result of two opportunistic politicians, mujeeb and bhutto & a power hungry drunk general Yahya. This is the reason that nature took revenge, which is evident from the way bhutto and mujeeb died.

The basic plot theme: Everything was everyone elses fault. 3 million Bangladeshis were not murdered, 27,000 women were not raped. The Pakistanis kept on winning but somehow (unexplained) lost to the Indians in the end. The General was always right, everyone else was wrong. This self-delusional, lying, racist drivel shows what is wrong with Pakistan -- a nation created (mainly by Bangladeshis as it happens, as they provided the majority of the votes for the new country) supposedly in the name of Islam, but which has murdered more Muslims than India, Israel, Serbia, Croatia and indeed pretty much any other nation you can think of apart from Iraq or Russia -- and those countries took years to do what Pakistan did in months. This is an army that has killed or oppressed more of its own people than any other. The reviews on this page are also instructive; the Pakistani names are unashamed revisionist anti-Bangladeshi bigots who refuse to learn anything from their own past for their own national good. Explains why their country is still a Punjab dominated, poor, backward, repressive, military dictatorship today. Also explains how they could support the Taleban with no problems and have regular riots, independance movements in Sind and Baluchistan, political and social violence, a drug problem, illiteracy, massive debt, few international friends, corruption and God knows what else. A nation cannot progress until it learns from its mistakes and Pakistan refuses to learn from its biggest one.

This book cites a great deal of talmudic and rabbinic text out of context. It is useful for scholars who know their way around. Lay persons should not attempt it. It continues the long tradition of Christian Hebraism intended only to denigrate Jews, with no thoughts of serious textual analysis

Having read Israel Shahak's book, "Jewish History, Jewish Religion", "The Traditions of the Jews" by Johann Eisenmenger and now this, "The Talmud Unmasked", I am deeply saddened and disgusted.
I was raised in a Christian family and community and was taught that the followers of the tenents of Judaism are our "elder brothers in the faith"...that their God and ours (the God of Abraham) is One and the same.
This is not true.

I did not read the book yet. But I am interested in the book.
Before reading the book, I was checking the reviews.
It is interesting to know, that in general the opinions are very opposite.

Some hate jews based on the books, such as Pranaitis's or similar.
The others are trying to make arguments, that all the hatred addressed to the jews historically is totally unbased and without any reason. Such people provide arguments, that the critics of sionism too often interpret the sacred jewsh writings too literally, or do not make the exact citations, or even worse - do not know the thing they are talking about.

One of reviewwers, woting against the book is, Michael Sullivan. But Mr. Sullivan in his review, made a terrible mistake himself, stating, that Pranaitis was a Russian priest. This statement is totally untrue. Pranaitis was a Lithuanian, not Russian priest. To take Lithuanian for a Russian is the same grave mistake, as to take a jew for an indian. Lithuanians are of different language group (baltic, vs. slavic). Lithuanians were catholics. Russians - orthodox christians.

Therefore, before making politically correct statements and accusations against critics of jews, it would be wise to get to know some facts. This knowledge of ethnic groups of the good old Europe is not as d

The Real Question

The Talmud is not a "book" in the normal sense, that it can be just picked up and "read" like a novel or a history. Its language and vocabulary can be very technical and specialized; its meaning never clear on the surface. If you think you can understand what's going on on any particular page simply by reading it and taking it on its face value, you are wrong. Not that it is a secret code. Rather it is a complex and extremely sophisticated text that needs to be "learned", not merely "read."

That said, the real question isn't so much the truth value of this book (yes, many of the quotes are real; what the author implies they mean is highly misguided) as it is why has it been republished and why does Amazon feel the need to market and sell it, especially under the "Judaism" category rather than the "Anti-semitism" or "Prejudice" category?

I enjoyed the basic insight provided by N. Evans. I believe I would be classified as in the 'teenage' stage of locs, and found the information & relative tips to be pretty handy. I live in Minneapolis, MN where there is a growing trend to 'lock-up'. This isn't the most diverse state, so printed info such as this book are a must read. The hairdresser at Malobe Natural Hair Salon 813 W. Lake St. 800-840-4514, (feel free to mention you heard from Montuaine), recommended this book & was not wrong in giving it rave reviews. I have been convinced to endure the early stages of locking & patiently await the look I desire.

Unfortuantely, people will accept this book as authoritative

eventhough it contains very little information about dreadlocks, and the majority of the information that it DOES contain is erroneous, incomplete, or simply made up by the author and her clique. She is apparently ignorant of the fact that dreadlocks date back to the beginning of time in ALL cultures, not just black culture (for example, ancient celtic warriors wore dreads, as did the Maoris of New Zeland), although she makes up for this in part by classifying dread-wearers such as the Shivites of India as "african". This is an even greater pity considering that THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE originated in Ethiopia, a fact she is ignorant of, eventhough it would support some of her claims. (Should I tell her that Bob Marley's father was white?) It is a damn shame to see a book like this used to perpetuate the isms and scims of Babylon (and hustle customers into her hair salon), rather than to promote the upful and positive dread vibe and the truth of Rastafari. If this book goes into a second printing it should be retitled: Everything My Guru And I made Up About Hairlocking (Including The Awkward And Inarticulate Term "Locktician").

If you are in the process of locking or thinking about locking, this book will provide no useful information as to how to go about it. The author is more concerned with imparting her concept of spirituality rather than facts. It takes about an hour to read through this mess, and I'm still wondering what the 40 commandments of MAAT have to do with locking ones hair. What I was looking for was some real information regarding starting, maintaining and caring for locs, types of products to use (other than the authors own). No wonder this mess is out of print. The entire discussion on coiled hair as antennae and electromagnetic fields was entirely too comical!

This was an amusing little book that was about a 20 min read start to finish.(I'm by no means a speed reader. Too much quasi-spiritual blah blah and not what I wanted to know. What I wanted to know was much more in the way of technical information and illustration, and nice photos. Nice try trying to market everything from products, to videos, classes etc etc etc. In a word this book was "boring".
