The paradox: the presence of the myth in the Post Industrial Society!Review Date: 2005-10-04
All the organizations are supported unconsciously by ancient and similar facts immersed in the history. Handy has rethought, confirmed and carved in relief a magnificent example of what intelligence means: to reorder and focus from different angles the essential principles that underlie beneath the complexity and the increasing competitiveness of the modern world.
In this order of ideas, Handy plans and puts on the table of the leonine executive 's mind new proposals, demolishing certain behavior patterns that remain such authentic mental barriers. The paradoxes as well as the myths don' t pretend erect as perpetual life' s lessons, because this attitude would reveal precisely he rationalization of the mythical fact. Handy opposes the reality against the illusion of the reality and unmasks certain learned and absorbed models that we ten to assume as unerring. The paradoxes ' intention, in last instance is unbalance to rebalance, but you as manager is the only who can do it if you process the information and redistributes the iron laws in search of your role.
Innovation is simply an intelligent transformation, and this book bets for that device.

I may be influenced by, my privilege of having lived in England from the mid seventies thru early eighties. He particularly acknowledges the former Labor Party, Tony Benn. This "socialist" even frightened moderate laborites of its time. Another one of those he acknowlges is former Vice President Al Gore, and for Mayor of New York, Mayor Dinkins. As a resident and taxpayer of New York, I know the true David Dinkins !
He correctly points out that Microsoft Corporation is merely "intelectual Property". I agree with him. Later on, he rambles on that ownership of Corporations and business's should be overhauled.
We can all learn from Japan and Germany, and without Japan the US Auto Industry would still be producing thousands upon thousands of junk. However, his reasons that British and American Society should adapt the German and Japanese systems are a joke. In reality, much which was implemented in the 80's in both UK and US is now hurriedly being copied in Germany.
His Chinese Contract is not even worth the time to comment on it !
Other than a few pages of real practicality and common sense, this book is nothing more than left wing rambling and nonsense
He says it is about time we paid the third world a fair price for their trees. I insist must replant trees, we must reduce the amount of paper we comsume. Culprits must not get off the hook. This,in my opinion, is essential whatever ones political beliefs. This paperback is about 320 pages. It is a pity so many trees have to be torn down and the end result is this junk

To me, the easiest sin for a Christian is becomming "religious." I highly recommend this book.
A Faithful WarningReview Date: 2001-03-04
It is in this light that Witness Lee carefully takes the reader through the New Testament (especially Matthew, Paul's epistles, and Revelation) to show clearly, emphatically, and unequivocally, that Christ is versus religion.
What Witness Lee points out is very subtle and therefore can be easily misunderstood and misinterpreted upon first hearing. However, after reading through and studying, one sees that the point is strongly anchored in the Scriptures. Actually, one realizes that the fact is plainly found in the Bible. What can be clearer than Christ's own words, "You search the Scriptures. . . Yet you are not willing to come to Me. . . ." (John 5:39, 40).
I appreciate the clear exposition of the pure Word of God. I have been greatly helped and continue to be helped by the message conveyed in this book - seek only Christ!

Christ doesn't want religious people; He wants a bride!Review Date: 2006-09-07
In the Gospels, Jesus was questioned, pestered, and persecuted by religionists. Lee especially draws attention to the incident where Jesus was asked why his disciples did not fast, and Jesus replied that no one fasts when they are in the presence of the bridegroom. Christ referred to himself as the Bridegroom because that's what he wants to be to us! This little nugget alone had a huge impact on the way I relate to and talk to God -- it's so pleasant to enjoy Him as a wonderful bridegroom, a fiancee!
Moving on to Acts and Paul's epistles, we see how people in the early church struggled with such snares as gnosticism and returning to the laws of judaism. It is really eye-opening to see how much of the content of these epistles concerns turning the young believers away from these distractions and back to Christ Himself. Paul says, "I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy, for I betrothed you to one husband, that I might present you as a pure virgin to Christ" (2 Cor. 11:2)
Going book by book through the New Testament, this vision of Christ wanting a bride, not religious followers, becomes clearer and clearer.
Finally, the book concludes with three short chapters on Revelation. "Five Steps Toward a New Religion" expounds on the letters to the seven churches in Rev. 2-3 to show the steps of falling from a pure love for Christ into "Christianity" as a religion. This is not bashing anybody or anybody's way of worhsipping God -- it is calling each of us to take care lest our own hearts be carried away into religion instead of relationship. For example, the first step is "work without love."
The book of Revelation reveals both the bride of Christ and the true nature of religion, which is very hideous. Fortunately, this book also unfolds what the Word says about allowing the Lord to shine on and deal with our natural religious concepts. Above all, we must "keep our first love" for our dear Bridegroom!

With the name Zig Ziglar-- his business associate-- all over this book my hopes were to high. The title (Inspire Any Audience) is overdone. Inspire is a misrepresentation. Keep them interested would be more accurate. Page 121 he advises avoiding words like certainly, positively and others. If the word any is not a violation then it will require a Clinton like explanation for the word "is" or in this case "any" from Jeary.
In chapter 8 "Keeping Their Attention" he introduces the concept of business entertainment-a phrase he has trademarked. In the title he uses the words proven secrets. The big secret is that his explanation of business entertainment is shockingly shallow. The worthy gist of is to do bold things to keep the audience engaged. Sorry, Jeary the command to play music, play games and other categories does not cut it. Explain yourself. I get the drift of it enough to say that is the book that Jeary or someone should write. That book would be fresh and exciting. In fact if that book exists I am going to find it.
On page 96 there is a page on gestures. In nearly every speaking book the author is so afraid of mechanical outcomes that they say trite stuff about be natural or be yourself. Give Jeary credit for making an attempt at giving some specific advise about gestures. The book turns me off on paying big bucks for his in person seminar on presentations at this point. There are lots of little tidbits and minor insights through out the book.
Just--- not a block buster book. It is well above average. Of the 40 plus books on speaking that I have read and reviewed on Amazon this book is at the lower end of the top ten books to read for public speaking improvement. Clearly, a worthy book.
Inspire Any Audience is worth the money and then some but it is not an inspired book that the author was burning to write. It is a darn good survey of techniques to give your customers an interesting day long seminar.

My openings have gotten a thousand times better. I've learned how to keep the audiences attention - especially during my longer (2+ hours) seminars. And there's a better flow between changes in topics.
I still pull this book out before all of my major presentations just to make sure I'm still on point. Whether you're a beginner or a professional speaker, I think you'll get a lot of value in this book, not found elsewhere.

'Finger-Spitzengefühl'Review Date: 2005-10-26
Now in the dusty corner of bibliomania, I have found two more authors who are willing to share their joy of discovery with me. They even have a name for it: 'Finger-Spitzengefühl'--"the electrifying alertness to what is unusual or important in an early printed book. When 'Finger-Spitzengefühl' is coupled with serendipity, the gates of paradise open for the dealer in old and rare [books]."
Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern share their "thrill of the chase and the joy of the find," as well as a seven-decade-long partnership in life--"the partnership of 'Faithful Friends' who share 'a deep, deep love.'"
I have to admit I had trouble getting into this book. I read some of the earlier pages six or seven times because I kept falling asleep and losing my place. However, once the authors were out of childhood recollections and into the chase--first of all for the works that Louisa May Alcott had published under a pseudonym--then I was hooked.
These authors have illuminated many once-obscure corners of history through their curiosity and devotion. They deplore collectors who pursue rare books as an investment, much as I would deplore a physician who is in practice 'only for the money.' Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern have devoted their lives to the search for the old and rare, and their love, curiosity, and wisdom show through on almost every page of this book.

More than natureReview Date: 2003-06-21
His individuality mixes with the other's and the result is a complex narrator, an overwhelming amount of literary, cultural and mythological references, a refined use of the metaphor and a hightened sense of reality. Cemi's world is more than nature... it is supernatural. Cemi attends to the world of death, as he remembers the lifes of his ancestors, as they are told to him by his mother Rialta, and grandmother Augusta. The first half of Paradiso is all about the family... then uncle Alberto's death marks a point of change in the novel. From that moment on, it focuses in Cemi's friendship with two other students: Fronesis and Focion. The three of them constitute a triangle in which homosexuality, love, erotism, unity, mythology and androginy are the main topics. As well as incest.
When this simbolic triangle breaks, Cemi is ready for the epiphany: he meets Oppiano Licario: a friend of his father who promised him, as he was dying, to look after his son (Cemi). Licario also witnessed Alberto's sexual iniciation. He is a poet, and he is the one who can bring Jose Cemi out of the time of desperation into a rythm of reflection and artistic contemplation.
There is so much more to this novel... You can only know what it is all about by reading it. I can here only give you a few pieces. As Lezama believed: only what is hard is really rewarding, and this is particularly true for young people.
A Universe in a bookReview Date: 2004-12-10
It is unfortunate Lezama Lima has been largely forgotton in the US except for a few ardent readers. It is impossible to find any of his poems in translation. Maybe they are not so readily translatable. In any event, the translation of Paradiso is in itself an amazing achievement, as Paradiso explodes in volcanic beauty.
OverratedReview Date: 2005-03-09
Sometimes some of the worst snobs are those (i.e., homosexuals) who have themselves suffered the most heinous abuse because of their dubious social stature--rather than reject the values of the mainstream, a writer like LL ends up embodying them and perpetuating them to an infuriating degree through his snobbish affectations. Or else one could view his aesthetic vision as essentially escapist, understandable given the political situation in Cuba at the time. Still, a more accurate view of what was actually happening might have been of more human interest--it would have been valuable to see how these characters strained to maintain their sensibility in view of what was actually occurring around them. But, as it is, the book seems to exist in a vacuum with no real connection to the political situation in Cuba--its Eurocentric preoccupations offend.

Puntos a favor:
