This is a good quick read, and it is sick and twisted. However I can't but wonder would the character in the book would have not became a transexual had he not been molasted by some pervarted, religious, demononic man. This makes me believe that people are not born gay, but are introduced to this behavior at an early age and their subconcious mind makes them believe this is what is normal along with other sexual demon predators. Watch your children at all times even with the people you think you may know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember trying to read this book on the train years ago and I just couldn't get into it. Actually, I didn't know what the heck I was reading. Now reading it today, giving it a second try, I couldn't take my face out of this book. I read this book in less than a week. The epilogue was soooo sad. Otis was trying to find love everywhere and struggling with his sexuality. All of the things he saw and been through. The family seemed to be alright until his money hungry mother pressured the family to move to Chicago. Thats when everything started. This book is a must read and I do recommend it to anyone.

The only negative thing I have to say about this book is the NUMEROUS amount of typos. Words were even missing from sentences at times. Sometimes nearly the entire sentence was filled with big words that I (personally) didn't understand. Other than that its still a 5 star.

A punch in the gut...

Not for the weak at heart. Beck is much more graphic than he was in "Pimp..." in this tale of the tragic fall of a black family in the Chicago ghetto of the 30's as told by the youngest child who is fighting a losing battle against his own homosexuality. This one gave me a few sleepless nights but I couldn't resist coming back for more.

Arrancame la vida - Text for Spanish Course

Our 4th year level Spanish Course at Georgia State University enjoyed Arrancame la vida. A good story illustrating the all-too-typical political leaders in Mexico for many decades following the Revolution. Catalina, narrator of the story and wife of the political boss, Andres, is a facinating character. She both despises her husband's total lack of values and enjoys the "good life" he offers her.

I had never read a book by Mastretta until I picked up a copy of "Arrancame la vida". In this book, the author describes the life of a woman, Catalina, during and after the Mexican Revolution. She marries a strong, power-thirst man who becomes a big politician.

I found this story different because of the sincerity with which the main character expresses herself. However, what made the story interesting, at least for me, was to realise how little things have changed in the power circles. Replace Catalina's name and add a current, prominent last name of a Mexican socialité, and you can probably still validate all the assumptions on which this book is based.

Mastretta has that "spark" that allows you to get a realistic picture of the book's characters. It is also quite witty if you know anything about the Mexican culture! The only drawback I found in the book was her use of the punctuation signs, but you can get over it because the story is gripping.

Highly recommended if you want something lite, relaxing and that makes you laugh and become even more cynical about politicans and society.

This is the bible. Oh, there are more recent books that have simpler and better strategies. Even Ken Uston himself said his strategies were too complicated before his death. Not that they aren't effective, just too complicated.

But this book has it all. Strategies up the whazoo, instructions on how to learn and practice, betting strategies, his stories of play, how his teams worked, experimentation with computers during play, and legal battles. This book combined it all in one and earns my rating of "Greatest Blackjack Book Ever."

this book was entertaining, cool storys of kens adventures.
the info on blackjack is a little out dated. (but there will always be 52 cards in a deck, so counting systems should still be useful in todays games.) even though casino rules have changed, it is very possible to change basic strategy to suite the game. then choose a count system to advance your self to a better player.

ive read quite a few books on the subject, most just repeat the basic strategy without telling you anything else. ken goes a step further here with flashcards to aid you in learning the basics. theres also a wide coverage for a few different counting strategies (without you having to pay extra for them) for different levels of your skill as well as fun little anecdotes about his heydey in team playing. its worth it alone just for the historical tidbits

Good book on the history of card counting
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-19
Million Dollar Blackjack is a great book, but not for the reasons you might think! Written decades ago many other blackjack books have since been written with stronger, easier to apply, and simply more effective card counting systems. So if you're looking for "the system" look elsewhere!

With that said, what MDB will do for you is introduce you to the fascinating history of card counting. Many people unfamiliar with card counting imagine it to be a solitary practice where a single player attemts to "take on" the casino. Ken (and others) viewed card counting as a business and developed a number of innovative (at the time) systems for team play to maximize profit, while minimizing financial risk! Some of the techniques they came up with (and revealed in MDB) are nothing short of genius!

The Verdict:
If you're trying to learn how to count cards or just become a better blackjack player there are newer books out there better suited for this purpose...But once you've read a couple of those books come back to MDB for a great read on how card counting evolved!

I just recently found this again as an adult to share to my son. I remember the teachers back when I was about eight or a little younger showing us a movie version of this book. I found it mesmerizing. While it doesn't portray the culture that the book is based on absolutely correctly, it is a child's book and being so, sometimes things are changed to make it easier for them to understand. Also it is the writers interpretation of the myth. That being said, the book teaches children how to be heroic in their own respect and that sometimes the needs of the one, is outweighed by the needs of many.

The storybook itself has amazing art work and helps keep a child engaged as the journey goes on. I love this book and I hope you will too.

Buy this for a good read to your littlest ones.

Story of trials drawn in a rectangular style

Review Date: 2007-01-11
To those who pay attention to the myths of various cultures, the fundamental premise of this book comes as no surprise. The Sun, in this case a god to the Pueblo Indians, sends a spark of life down to Earth and impregnates a woman. The child is a boy who is ridiculed by the other boys because he has no father. He then goes on a search for his father and gets no results until he consults the arrow maker.
The arrow maker understands the situation and turns the boy into an arrow. He then shoots him into the sky so that the boy can converse with the Sun. After he claims to be to be the son of the Sun, the boy is given a series of trials, which he passes. He is then returned to the Earth and acknowledged by all as the son of the Sun. There is great rejoicing among the people as they now appreciate who the boy really is.
This is a delightful tale that is illustrated in the style of the Pueblo Indians. The drawings are made using almost exclusively lines drawn at right angles. Most shapes are made from a combination of rectangular figures, yet so well done that it is still possible to detect the emotions of the characters. It is an excellent story for young children, it will teach them something about another culture and that is always a good thing.

This is an inside look about Indian heritage and the kinds of myths they had in their times. The reader really gets a feel for how the strange boy feels when he gets picked on because he is different. This is a fictional and adventurous book with such great details that it almost seems real as you're reading it.
This story is set in a little pueblo where a mother is giving birth. Suddenly the God of the Sun sent down an arrow to the women and she gave birth to his son. As the little boy grows up, all the other boys make fun of him because he looks different and has no father. Then finally one day he sets off to find his father and to truly know who he is.
The author does such a fantastic job on his voice and sentence fluency that when you're reading the book it seems like you are the strange little boy. This is my favorite children's book because I read it over and over since I was a kid and I enjoy Indian myths. I also enjoy this book because the pictures are phenomenal and the colors are amazing.
People who like adventure and can relate to the little boy would love this outstanding book. This book is very inspiring and shows that you can do anything you want to if you try. I gave this book five out of five stars and I hope you'll like this awesome book just as much as I did.

On the question of stereotypes

Review Date: 2008-05-30
...I have to agree, Philip Dey Eastman's "The Best Nest" definitely raises some questions in the modern adult's mind about gender stereotypes. Aside from putting the thrust of the story into motion- unnecessarily- Mrs. Bird is bossy, demanding, critical of her husband's judgement (while not possessing any better judgement of her own), irresponsible (she forces her husband to search for her), prone to change her mind on a whim, and completely unapologetic about all of the above. One can almost imagine the "Ain't that just like a woman?" snicker. As an adult, one can recognize that the book is a product of its era (it was first published in 1968), but the question definitely needs to be asked: "Can my child make that kind of distinction? Or am I teaching something about the interplay between men and women, and married couples, that I would prefer not to?"

For myself, I'll say the bouncy wording and bright illustrations would probably appeal to very young children, and children over ten (if they're still interested in things at this level) probably *are* capable of recognizing that the characters are just characters and not role models. But I might hesitate to read this to a child in between those ranges... I'd much rather go with _One Fish, Two Fish_, or _The Sneetches_, or even Eastman's own _Go, Dog, Go!_.

If your child's game of "house" gets a lot bossier after this book becomes their favorite... You've been warned.

The Best Nest for sure!

I love these beginner books the binding is so sturdy on them. The story is so cute and what an adventure these birds have in their quest for a new home. They set out cause the wife decides she just can't stand their old place so off the couple go trying things from a hole in a tree, to a shoe, to a mailbox but all those places are already occupied by a raccoon, to a foot, to a pile of mail!! So the wife finds a beautiful bell tower and says "this is the place to make our nest" and the little hubby bird is at first a little hesitant thinking the place is just too big but she says 'oh no I like this big place" and so they settle and get busy at seeking out items to make their nest and this is where the book gets really funny cause they get things from'horse hair to mattress stuffing to human hair to sweater string and right off the people!! The expressions on the people they take from are just a hoot even my daughter yells "Hey their taking hair from his beard!". And at the end of the day the couple have built themselves one beautiful nest and the hubby bird is so happy he goes out of the bell tower (of course neither knowing it was a bell tower) and he gets up on the very top to sing his little song "I love my home I love my nest in the all the world my nest is best" and while hes whistling away all gleeful he fails to notice the man who comes to ring the bell everyday and all the sudden you just hear "ding dong ding dong ding dong" and of course the mother bird is RIGHT under the bell (cause thats where she built herself the best nest) so she flies out of there like lightening! The hubby bird returns to a big old mess the nest is destroyed and his wife is missing and he starts searching for her high and low in chimneys in trees everywhere he can possibly think of and just as he's starting to lose hope it gets worse he sees a "big fat cat with a big fat smile" and a few little feathers right by his "big fat smile" and thinks "Oh no that fat cat got Mrs. Bird" and so he's so upset and is flying around all frantically and a storm rolls in and he's so upset but he has to stop and rest and BOOM slams right into his old birdhouse "that old nest Mrs. Bird hated" and gets himself inside and there is Mrs. Bird! singing his song "I love my home I love my nest in the all the world my nest is best" and he's shocked "who, you, what are you doing here I thought you hated this old place" and she's had a change of heart and tells me "Not me cause even a mother bird can change her mind" and shows that she's sitting on a new big blue baby egg. The only qualm I have with this book is the wife bird uses the word hate and I prefer not to introduce that word to my toddler so I just edit it out when I read it! Its a great little short story especially if your little one is a bird watcher like mine. I also recommend "P.J. Funnybunny" by the same author that book is so fantastic!

Not PD's Best...

Review Date: 2008-02-13
I bought this for my niece because I always liked PD's other books as a child and this is one I hadn't seen. I previously bought her "Flap Your Wings" which is a great, fun little story, so I thought this book would be as good. It's not. It's kind of dumb, really, and there are a few things that I really don't like for little kids. First, Mrs. Bird says she "hates her nest" and she gets her way and they move. Teaching kids to say they "hate" something to get their way? Nope. Second, toward the end, Mr. Bird thinks his wife is DEAD. He thinks she's been eaten by a cat. Wow. That's bad for little kids, right? No warning there, as PD's other books involve dogs in race cars, teaching an alligator to fly, or looking for your Mom. Dead wife? Yikes. Why couldn't he just wonder where she went? Why make him think she's been digested by a cat? It's not even consistent with the story!
I should have read the book before reading it to my niece, but there was a time crunch. I give it a 3 because even though I'm not sure it's so good, she really likes it. The second time I read it to her, I edited it so that it wasn't so harsh. She's 2.5 years old, and even after 1 reading she could answer questions about the story. So as a learning book, it's right on par. I just wish they would edit it a bit. Change Mrs. Bird's objection, and take out the cat page, and it's a much better book for toddlers!
But honestly, I would recommend "Are You My Mother" "Go Dog Go" and "Flap Your Wings" and say leave "Nest" for another day...

My 4 year old daughter is quite interested in this book but doesn't really like it. She keeps hoping, (I think) that there is more too it.

The joy in this book is that it is all about rhymes, nureau's in the bureau, tellar, sellar, bellar etc in the cellar and so on. Which is a nice early rhyme style story - learning about sounds and I guess you could say the texture and rules of language. However the story is almost pointless. Some of these animals are good and some aren't - but it is difficult to tell while - the Nofa on the Sofa is apparently an animal he doesn't like, but it just appears to be reading a book quietly.

I found the illustrations a bit unsatisfying as well. They are in colour, but when I compare them to the glorious detail of Horton Hatches an Egg (which is only coloured in three colours) then the Wocket in the Pocket does not match by any stretch of the imagination.

It is a simple easy story to rattle off at bedtime, it teaches rhyme but it doesn't inspire my children.

*A quick idea for those familiar with the book -- I like to separate the "Good Guys" into two groups -- those that say their sounds at the beginning (B,D,J,K,P,T,V,Z), and those that say their sounds at the end (F,L,M,N,R,S,X).

This program turned around reading problems in our homeschool. In addition to clear instruction in the book, the author also provides lesson plans (word lists, etc.) for some basal reading series at her web site www.onlinereadingteacher.com She has a series of complementary work sheets that greatly decrease the preparation for the parent. You may also post questions on her message board, and she is quick and thorough in her answers. I have found this to be a highly successful reading program. My "problem reader" exclaimed yesterday as we deciphered words, "Oh! This is my favorite part of school!", and she now reads with confidnece. What more can I say?

I'm teaching a 1/2 split this year and using this program again. In fact, I've introduced my primary-level colleagues to AT LAST and, hopefully, by next month, all four first grades will be employing a variation on this program. Last year I enjoyed enormous success with AT LAST! and I anticipate even better results this year. My thanks to the author.

Your children will love this story about sharing. The repetitive lines are even perfect for younger kids.

My daughter love this book very much!

I have been reading Pat Hutchins books to children for many years. They are all wonderful. The Doorbell Rang is great for learning problem solving, math concepts, and the joy and sometimes the dilemma of sharing!

My 3 year old love this book. Since there are no words, we make them up to go with the pictures and she looks forward to reading this before bed.

I really enjoyed reading this book with my [...]nieces. I like that it can be different lengths (a quick read when the night is getting late, or a lengthy discussion when there is more time). Often the kids like to read the same books over and over, and it's nice that this story can be different every time. The illustrations are cute and the little old woman is persevering.

I teach four year olds and they love books. A good picture book speaks to them and this wonderful book by Tomie dePaola is absolutely the best. Up until recently, the only picture book without words of which I was aware, was THE SNOWMAN. My students love sitting in the "Storyteller's Chair" and reading to the class. I discovered another book of this type and it's a Caldecott Honor Book - THE RED BOOK by Barbara Lehman. Of the three books, I love Tomie dePaola's book!

The story begins with a picture of a woman who is just waking up in bed with her cat and her dog. You follow her as she washes up and gets ready to make her breakfast. She is happily thinking about pancakes. You move along with her as she gathers all the ingredients. Alas, her pets almost spoil her plans but fortunately she has wonderful friends and neighbors next door.

This is a great book to use with young children to teach predicting and inferencing skills. Also excellent for teaching children about cooking from scratch and supplying your own resources.

A rough morning ends with a yummy breakfast...thanks to the neighbors!

Of course with a wordless book a story can take many directions. This story is a simple tale about an old woman with single-minded determination for...pancakes. Her trials and tribulations about getting pancake ingredients on her farm and ultimate failure at the hands of her dog and cat ends with her "following her nose" to the neighbor's house where the pancakes are just coming off the griddle.

Good to read to 18 months and older. Of course, its the skill of the reader that makes this fun. If one doesn't approach it with creativity and flair, it'll be flatter...than a pancake.

I'M USING CMDT SINCE 4 YEARS AND I THINK IT IS BEST FOR USMLE STEP 2 AND 3. THIS BOOK IS REALLY A QUICK GUIDE FOR PHYSICIAN WHO ARE PRACTICING IN FAMILY MEDICINE OR INTERNAL MEDICINE. BEST INVESTMENT. I ESPECIALLY DON'T LIKE THE ONE OF THE REVIEW WRITTEN ABOVE SAYING THAT THIS BOOK IS FOR LAY-MAN. LOOK AT THE PAGE # 699 IN CMDT 2002 FOR DRUGS CAUSING PANCREATITIS.

A QUALITY COMPANION FOR THE MEDICALLY INCLINED

Despite the fact that user-flexibility was not uppermost on the minds of its designers, the "CMDT on CD-ROM" is a quality companion for the medically inclined. Both medics and medical scientists may find this software irresistible. Detailed diagnostic and therapeutic descriptions, which spanned across hundreds of diseases and disorders were provided in a clear and sequential order.
The contents of this CD-ROM are updated annually, and although it would be nice to own the most recent copy, one would not be lagging too faraway with any issue that is not more than five years off the pace.

This is an excellent book--as a medical student I have found it invaluable. I have no idea what futuredoc is talking about in his review---this book has many pertinent details. Regardless, the purpose of this book is not to be encyclopedic, but instead to give the reader a brief yet detailed synopsis on specific disease entities. If you want to know everything, then obviously you should go to Harrisons. But carrying Harrison's around is impractical for most people, and it is nice to glance at a text in-between patients when you need to look something up, or brush up on something you haven't seen in a while or can't remember off the top of your head.

Additionally, an important detail to remember is that this text is updated yearly, and has a reasonable enough price to consider buying it at least every other year to keep up with all of the ever-changing aspects of General Internal Medicine.

I highly recommend this book with no hesitation to anyone interested in a basic Internal Medicine Text that is still detailed enough for clinical use.

Excellent for the Clinic or Hospital setting

Without a doubt, this is one of the best paperback books on current medical diagnoses and treatments that I had ever used. Certainly, the book does not go into DEEP detail like Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, but the two books have different goals. I would recommend Harrison's for extreme depth of learning and I would recommend CMDT to help you slug it out through your day at the hospital or clinic. I refer to this book more than any other because the depth of information is good for every day practice, and it is written extremely well. In fact, it is a pleasure to read over when you have time to pass.
