While the subject matter is covered in the text I would not refer to it as "simple". The author is obviously a highly advanced mathatician and the material is presented with highly advanced terminologies that to some laypeople may be a little difficult to understand. That being said, if you stick with it you will learn different methods of doing advanced mathmatics in a much easier way than taught in the Western world.

This book was given to me by a friend from India. I just have to say that this book is inspiring in such a way that it provides a new way of thinking in Mathematics. What I found most fascinating is that this way of thinking has been around for over 100 years and very little people know about it! It's a pity this is not taught in American schools because it gives a different perspective on how to solve problems - actually a much easier way to solve problems. If you have kids or you yourself want to solve problems easier (and faster), I strongly recommend this book.

The majority of the American public is blind about the rest of the world's great achievements, not just mathematics, but also the arts and sciences. Truly unfortunate.

I am a therapist and I use this book for clients both young and old. It is such a precious book with a wonderful message. If you are a parent especially of a little girl get this book for your child. Then get a pig of some kind as a reminder to like themselves no matter what.

My mother bought a copy of this title for me to give to her future grandchild. I was so inspired by it, that I want to give it to all of my friends now. This book has delightful drawings and a wonderful message. This book is fun to read as an adult and a child. It is so important that children and adults are surrounded by positive messages like the one this book has to offer. I recommend it for everyone!

The positive messages of this book are complemented by the terrific illustrations. A very simple yet important text as it teaches little ones to like themselves. The main character is one very upbeat pig. My son enjoys and laughs at the illustrations. The text provides fodder for conversation. Not too heavy in a figurative or literal way, this book is small enough to warrant a place on every small child's bookshelf. You may also want to check out Ms. Carlson's other books as they are all terrific. Highly recommended!

Just to add to other great reviewers' points, this book is perfect for conveying joy in life's many possible activities, even when you don't have someone else to share them with. I counsel lots of folks to whom I loan my copy - parents of one child who worry their child will be lonely if an "only", single moms who also welcome reminders that life can be fun even when you aren't in a relationship, and parents-to-be who worry their child will feel badly about differences, for ex. if they're adopted or conceived with the help of a donor [the topic of my book]. This pig bravely goes on learning even when she's embarrassed or makes mistakes - so this is a good book for parents and kids!

Hi I'm Zoe Whilton, and Childhood Hills is an excellent book. Each poem is a masterpiece of its own. My favorite poems are, "The Lie", "The Elevator", and "Your First Day at Dolly's" (by Annemarie Mullan Whilton, aka my mother, I am the girl at preschool, my sister is the one crying). I hope that Pat Mullan continues to write poetry.

Pat Mullan takes us on a poetic journey through Ireland, the world and childhood. His evocative poetry creates for us lush landscapes, towering cities and weeping hearts that share the sorrow within all of us.

Relationships are key to his poetry, love, loss and remembering. I truly enjoyed his style of writing; it wasn't at all like the rhyming cliché poetry we are overburdened with as we read aspiring poets; it has a rhythm all its own; one could almost hear an Irish lilt to it.

He adds to the end of his book a section in memory of James Dickey that is poignant and stirring reminding us of the vast heritage we have of poets often forgotten.

Childhood Hills
by Pat Mullan

Reading this collection of poetry and writings was like holding a conversation with a very interesting person who can fascinate with a hypnotic flow of words. His muse is an old country bard who whispered secrets of the ancient days in the poet's ear. Pat Mullan has translated those secrets onto these pages.

You will be moved to joy and sorrow as you traverse the winding path over these Childhood Hills. Within these hills dwells a child who remembers the man he was, not a man dreaming over a lost youth. He still lives in the poetry contained here.

This author is a spirit freed from the fears of childhood that we all have shared, no matter what shape those fears take, what horrid dreams they inspire. If you allow him, this poet will guide you through imagery and images, familiar and strange, to a destination where understanding waits.

A poem is music of the soul that takes its inspiration from ordinary events, places, and people. It is a music you hear with your heart. I recommend you read Childhood Hills slowly and listen carefully. It will quicken the spirit that lives within.

I bought Childhood Hills to read another author's poetry. In Pat's book, here are several of my favorites: THE QUARRY HOLE, WE NEVER TALKED, BICYCLE RIDE, SMALL VICTORY, GRANNY BUNTY'S BUTTON BOX, and MY CAT (this one is by Annemarie Mullan Whilton). As I read, Pat's poetry created a vivid picture in my mind. The poems about Pat's childhood were particularly moving. Great Book Pat!

A classic; readable, enjoyable and educational. Every journalist, broadcaster, pollster and politician should read this... (Maybe even some marketers and advertisers) Of course, everyone exposed to statistical assertions from the above categories should also read it!

I used this book when taking an engineering science degree in England nearly 40 years ago, and always found it fascinating. I lost it in the intervening years and was delighted to eventually find it at Amazon.com; I ordered five copies as I want everyone in my family to have one!

What Moroney was particularly good at was explaining common fallacies, and using colorful examples to make the point. The book is also laid out in a logical way, and the language is clear.

Highly recommended!

Oooh, I loved reading this book! It furnished me a most enjoyable summer, one where I had the luxury of putzing around while learning something worthwhile, more or less painlessly. I went on to read several more books on statistics (alas, none anywhere nearly as good as this.)

The publisher should (hint, hint) talk Mr. Moroney into the task or find a qualified author to revise the text and bring it up to date. For example, I'd like to see a book like this discuss meta-analysis of statistical studies. Then one would find out if this technique was a breakthrough or rubbish.

Twenty years ago, in the process of moving, my copy of this book fell and was buried in the West Virginia mud. It was retrieved and dried. Although it still retains the marks of its misadventure, it is always the first statistics book on my shelf that I turn to when I encounter a problem that I do not understand. This little book is clearly and succinctly written with the lay-person in mind. I have read it from cover to cover. Of what other mathematics text can this be said? I especially like the chapter on the Poisson distribution. My poor, sad, mishandled copy is beaten and worn. I am distressed that it is out of print. It belongs on the bookshelf of every scientist with the remotest intention to employ statistics.

This is my one of my favorite books of all time. I read this book as much as I read my Bible and that is daily. I am constantly referring to it as a source for healing and daily remedies. This book gives me comfort and uplifts my spirit. I think that Queen Afua is wonderful. I discovered this book from a friend when I was only 25 and I have followed her percepts as closely as I can for over 6 years and I am delighted.

I really love this book and even though I probably need to get another copy because my current issue is so worn. I love the wonder of having something such as this. Because I love the idea that one day I will tell my little "Rainbow" the laws of being healthy and staying healthy.

It often seems like an accident but the spirit always leds us to where we need to be. I found Queen Afua's book under a stack of dusty books in a book store some years ago. After reading this book four times, I think I am finally on the path to healing. This, of course, is a blessing. Only an angel sent from God could cause the healing of a people and that is what I think we will all find at the end of our journey if we just follow the teachings of this very wise, and open soul. Thank you, Queen Afua, very much, for sharing this book with the world and reminding us that all answers are always within.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It has been a while since I have bought a book and was unable to put it down. It is a great spiritual guide for healing. The only reason I did not give this book all five stars was due to some confusion I had while reading the book. The author tends to write things in various order so it was hard to write her formula down for fasting. You have to read the book all the way through (you can't simply go to a certain chapter and get all the directions to start the fast). Also she does not make any product recommendations so I am not sure what type of juicer or blender would be good to buy.I must say this book has started my journey of rebirth and is a great buy if you are searching for something to jump start the holistic path of healing.

Love it!

I first came across this book in 1973, in an Abakwa bookstore that carried occult titles and it made a powerful impression on me, lighting a lifelong interest in matters Tibetan and Buddhist as well as instilling the idea of a lifelong spiritual quest. I assumed then that the author was still alive, because the dust jacket wrote of her in the present tense. I was not wildly off mark, because she had died only four years before. She was the real deal and saw the magical land of Tibet first hand before the Chinese invasion. Moreover, she was recognized and valorized posthumously by the Dalai Lama.

I suppose that Madame David-Neel was truly interested in practicing Buddhism as a means to enlightenment. After all, she went to a great deal of trouble to get to Tibet, learn Tibetan, meet lamas, stay in mountain retreats and borderland monasteries. She must have been a sincere seeker.

But perhaps the idea of a European actually learning truth from "Orientals" was too much for the reading public to handle. Perhaps David-Neel was giving people what they wanted when she wrote about magicians and tricksters and assorted weirdness. Whenever she gets close to her own inner life, she suddenly clams up, saying things like, Whether it is true or not, I can't say, though I have had experiences, but never mind that.

In any case, I found the description of the practice of chod deeply moving. It shares characteristics with Christ's experience on Calvary, and only a deep compassion for all beings could impel one to visualize one's whole being being sacrificed for the salvation even of demonic beings. I wish David-Neel could have been a little less ironic and a little more open about her own passion to learn from the lamas.

This book present an excellent overview of Tibetan spirituality and the various practices that occur within that spirituality. Perhaps what I liked the best was that the author seemed to avoid incorporating Western cultural biases into her description. Indeed she seemed very intent on describing the practices in an accurate manner.

I was able to take her description of tumo and actually incorporate it into my daily practice. I've also used her chod ritual.

Tibetan Buddhism in Practice

While many books about Buddhism and other historically eastern religions focus on high theology, the book describes Tibetan Buddhism as it was practiced in the early 20th century. It is fascinating.

I first read this book in college and have just read it again after many years. It was better the second time around.

The first time, I was entranced by the accounts of exotic magic and mystery. This time I searched for themes and Ms. David-Neel's viewpoint. Dealing with death is the primary theme underlying at least the popular practice of this religion. As for Ms. David-Neel, I was interested in her viewpoint and experience as a Buddhist who did not find the Tibetan version to be her paricular brand. Because of her distance from this version of Buddhism, her accounts of events that she saw or experienced personally are particularly interesting.

Despite the fact that the materials that went into the construction of this book seem somewhat second-rate (thick, rough-edged paper, for one thing), it is really a good buy for less than fifteen dollars. Having Don Quixote in the original Spanish along with the classic Dore illustrations has been a real treat, I would recommend this edition to any lover of the Classics on a tight budget.

THE NOVEL

Review Date: 2004-06-02
Cervantes wrote El Quijote as a critic to novels about knights and damsels in distress which were very popular in his time. His hero, Alonso Quijano, is one of those who are so hooked on them that spend his days and nights reading .Till he becomes mad. A beautiful way to be mad, or maybe he is not so mad. El Quijote decides to beguin a journey with the faithful company of his steward Sancho Panza. Through the eyes of this odd couple we see the world. The world full of wonders, tournaments, knights and damsels, don Quijote sees, and the sensible, hard routinary world that Sancho sees.
Slowly Sancho is changing, there is a quijotization of Sancho. A vision of a world where truth and honor can be used, must be used.

If there would be a book written in Spanish which should be declared a monument this will be the one. Becasue the writting is not only wonderful. The use of Spanish in its most perfect way. But also because with these two characters Cervantes explains and depicts something very hard to do. The Spanish mind.
Duality is the keyword. The fantasy world where Don Quijote lives, that shelter to be away of all the things we do not like. And the acceptation of reality as it is, like Sancho does.
But there is also fun in this novel. Because humour is everywhere. From the episode of the windmills to the one with the wooden horse.

I understand that for a first approaching to Spanish literature is a hard effort, but it is addictive. If you read it once sooner or later you will read it again and again. And this edition worths the money. Prof. Blecua is probably the best in this field. So you can be sure the edition you are going to read is a good one.
I recommend this book, not only for the pleasure of the reading itself, but because after you read it I am sure you will think about it. So...En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme,.no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo, de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor. (...)

I had bought this book in the 90s, when it was first out and learnt to do all my Chinese cooking from it...From Sweet & Sour dishes to the best steamed dumplings! Its one of my favourites and I re-ordered it again twice to give it as birthday gifts. I am not chinese but everyone loves 'my' chinese cooking !...

This book is helpful both in the recipes given and the illustrations shown. It also has several glossaries and pages of "how to" instructions which I found useful.

quite easy cooking

Wow all I can say is that I just received this book along with the Japanese one and I must say these are fairly easy to make. It has ingredients that are very easy to find in your local supermarket without having to hunt down a asian speciality store for most ingredients like a lot of other books. I agree that this is a great book if one is truly interested in maing asian dishes the easy way, it can't get easier than these books

Really is Quick and Easy...

This whole series of books is so well illustrated and written that anyone can follow them. As a culinary student and personal chef I love the fact that there is a picture of what everything is suppose to look like along the way. If you are wanting to cook and try some authentic tasting Chinese cuisine this is a great book to start with. I am hoping to collect more in the series. The format and food are both excellent!!!
