ROBERT FRANK'S BEST (with the Americans, of course)

The Americans is a milestone in photography. Everybody should know that, and Robert Frank will surely be remembered for this book. But, what was before, and after the Americans? The answer is in The Lines of my Hand.
In these pages one can discover the strength of his vision before publishing The Americans, with pictures from England, Wales, Switzerland. And for me, what is more interesting, is all his evolution after the above mentioned book. His more and more experimental work in his house of Mabou. His loneliness, his isolation. In this book, all of his greatest pictures are printed (Sick of goodbys and Love, faith,... being the highlights).
Talking about the object itself, the printing is fantastic. It's a large format book, beautifully binded and with very good reproductions.
Really, for the price, it's a real bargain. Grab the first one you find.

An Excellent Resource for Munster Genealogy & History!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1997-09-24
Although it was certainly a useful book when first published in 1922, Samuel Trant McCarthy's book has become a unique reference, preserving many fragments of Munster history and genealogy which would have otherwise been lost due to the Public Records Office fire and other upheavals of the Irish War of Independence. As The MacCarthy Mor has observed, it would be quite impossible to write a similar book today due to the loss of so many primary sources. Still, the book had its share of errors and even some misconceptions regarding laws of succession and other issues surrounding the MacCarthy dynasty. In his extensive commentary to the new facsimile edition, MacCarthy Mor amplifies and clarifies admirably the material set forth in the 1922 book. There are a host of additional genealogical charts, pedigrees, and a great deal of valuable historical background, in addition to numerous corrections. For those interested in the history of southern Ireland and the MacCarthy family in particular, the book is an essential addition to your bookshelf! Gryfons has continued its fine track record of producing handsome volumes which will stand up to the demands of libraries and other high-usage situations for many years. I have found the book to be a wonderful resource in my own research, but it appeals also to the casual reader. There is something for everyone in this "History of a Great Irish Sept." It is a pleasure to recommend it highly.

I found Ms Akbar's book illuminating in the extreme, given that there has been very little reliable material on this enigmatic beauty known as Madhubala. It's the story of a very sad life, and a very sad and desperate woman. It is extremely well researched given the tight-lipped attitude of her family - all of whom sponged off her while she was alive. Madhubala was the most beautiful woman ever to be seen in Indian films. A must for all Madhubala and Indian film fans.

A pictorial description of the beauty of the Maltese islands

Published in 1990, there is no doubt that some of the images in this book have changed. However, since the island has been inhabited for thousands of years and lie roughly in the center of the Mediterranean, there is a deep-rooted culture. This lengthy history has also led to the development of a large number of tourist attractions and they change very little, even over decades.
Most of the images here are of the cultural health, wealth and history of the islands and those resources are impressive. There are cathedrals, dwellings, statues, paintings, crafts and ancient rock carvings. Malta is rarely mentioned in the news or in travel literature and that is unfortunate. It is a country with a rich heritage that rivals that of Greece and Italy, and from this book it is easy to see.

The purpose of this volume is to place academic management studies in an international and historical context. The book presents empirical evidence from Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweeden and the United States. An introductory chapter looks at mannagement studies in a number of different perspectives, while a concluding chapter examines the role of formal knowledge in management education.

A novel about money and power - and abuse
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-29

Harold Frederic's last novel, published posthumously in 1899, it's about Joel Thorpe, an unscrupulous English businessman, who wishes to acquire all the wealth and position he can, only to end up being bored with it all after getting it. He makes his "killing" with bogus rubber stock and a great deal of chutzpah. But he is also interested in power: "There's nothing else in the world so big as power - strength. If you have that, you can get everything else. But if you have it and don't use it, then it rusts and decays on your hands." He is ruthless and a bully, and remains so right to the end.

When near the end of the book Thorpe exhibits restlessness and displeasure with the way his life is turning out, his business partner levels with him: "You've set out to live the life of a rich country squire - and it hasn't come off. It couldn't come off! You haven't the taste for it inbred in your bones. You haven't the thousand little habits and interests that they take in with their mother's milk, and that make such a life possible." One of the best characters in the book is Thorpe's sister Louisa, who has him pegged right from the start. When she accuses him of being uncaring and negligent with his money and then declares, "You sit upon your money-bags and smile. If you want the truth, I'm ashamed to have you for a brother!" - we want to cheer. The novel is brisk and sharp in its satire, and sticks with you long after finishing it. Worth tracking down and reading.

Short but memorable, a pleasant addition to the library
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-30
I have treasured my 28th edition (published in 1926) for over 20 years. A short book, it is well written, with some archaic language. I suspect Herrick was a painter, his imagery is so vivid. The subject reflects the utopian tendancies in late 19th century New England. But that does not explain why I reread it every year. The story is about a doctor who heals men with broken spirits in his "Inn" in Albany.

The first half is about the Inn and it's Master. The simple telling of the story is moving. I can feel the bracing cold water of the morning swim, smell the fresh mown hay, hear the excited chatter of the table talk, see the glow of the pipes in the night down in the garden. It has some of the feeling of "Lost Horizons", but more real. The Inn is a haven from the cruel world outside, but here the shelter seekers invariably return to the fight. Each time I read it, I yearn to meet the Master and join the "Brethren", if only for a season.

The last half unfolds a different story, not simply a Utopian dream but a psychic conflict between two strong men. (In the psychological, not supernatural sense.) There is no profanity, sex, or violence. The tension is subtle, with an unexpected twist at the end.

This second part of the story illuminates the oft overlooked fact that sharpness of wit and tongue are not (or should not be) the true measure of a man. Yet there is no heavy-handed moral here. The characters are three-dimensional and compelling (for such a short tome).

Though it is not a "religious" book, I always come away from it feeling spiritually refreshed and morally stabilized. I recommend it whole-heartedly.
