"Flying Made My Arms Ache" is a factual yet frequently humourous autobiography of Wallens, a pilot during WWII. It's a compelling read as he details life from Flight Training School through to his squadrons. It's an excellent sort of 'slice of life' work if you want to get a feel for what life was like for a pilot in WWII. His ability to entertain and inform at the same time is really exceptional and his style reminds me a bit of a cross between James Herriot and Daniel V. Gallery. In the back of the book are three little sections that are really hilarious- the 'Comical Combat Chaos', in which he gives advice to new pilots, the 'Echoes from the Past' of various unfortunate/odd things heard over the R/T and 'An Incoherent Glossary of RAF Terms' some hilarious redefinitions of standard terms.

In short, if you want a book about WWII aviation that _isn't_ all blood, guts, despair, doom and illicit snogging, 'Flying Made My Arms Ache' fits the bill quite nicely

This is book that was originally written in Russian in 1924. It was first published in English in 1953 from the Foreign Languages Publishing House in Moscow. However, following the eclipsing of the legacy of Joseph Stalin during the Khruschev era the publication was allowed to lapse. The Enlish translation was only taken up again by the People' Publication House in Peking in 1964.

A collection of lectures delivered at Sverdlov Univeristy by Joseph Stalin in 1924, this book is important in the present day as a early presentation of the problems facing the young Soviet Union. The book outlines the first tenets of the theory of "socialism in one counrty" which aould have the Soviet people save their nation from world-wide forces of reaction by building a strong independent socialist state. This was a break from the previous Soviet dogma of world-wide revolution which alleged that the Soviet Union could only save itself by encouraging proletatrian revolutions in other countries. Because Leon Trotsky adhered closely to the world-wide revolution theory, this book can be seen as the opening shot in the epic battle within the Communist party of the Soviet Union between the Trotsky and Stalin wings of the party.

This book is a description of purdah practices and attitudes in a small Indian Muslim village near Delhi. Jeffery lived and conducted research in the village during the mid-1970s. The village was located near the shrine to Saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, and the men of the village pursued their ancestral avocation of taking care of the shrine and its pilgrims. The men's work at the shrine provided a modest yet dependable income which allowed the women to stay at home rather than go out to work. As Jeffery describes it, purdah, or the seclusion of women in the home, is an ideal that can only be realized when economic resources are sufficient.

Jeffery describes purdah in many aspects, from Western analyses of culture and economics, to Islamic law and tradition. To this, she adds interviews with the women and men of the village about what purdah means to them, acceptable behavior for women and men, and attitudes towards purdah. Jeffery finds that the village women are on the one hand frustrated by the limitations on their freedom of movement, but on the other hand, also afraid to go out because of the harassment of strangers. She argues that women play as much a role in the perpetuation of the cultural practice as men, but notes that the customs are changing.

I discovered 'The Prophet' in '85 ... why didn't anyone tell me there was a book that continued the story of 'The Prophet'? Stirring wisdom nested in beautiful verbal imagery.

An excellent book covering many of the issues of war and peace that were raised by the First World War. The only drawback of this book is that the author, Mr. Barnes, did not have, at the time of his writing, the wealth of documentary information that is now available. This information would not only have strentghened his principle concepts, but would also have changed his presentation of the role of the British Empire in the events he documents. In spite of this books dated provenance, I would recommend it to any serious inquirer of twentieth century political and military history.

If you like Genesis (I'm refering to the British rock band, not the first book of the Old Testament), or if you just love good photography, then you will love _From One Fan to Another_ by Armando Gallo. Make sure to also get _I Know What I Like_ by the same author/photographer. _I Know What I Like_ contains the story of the band from the sixties through the eighties, and it includes many awome photographs, some in black & white and some in color. _From One Fan to Another_ contains a bit of text, but is mostly a ton of color photos that tell the band's history in a visual way. Some of the photos are just the fellows at home or on the street, but the most striking ones are of the concerts with light shows that match the brilliance of the music. Even before they became successful enough to afford expensive light shows, Genesis made remarkable use of what little budget they had, and this can be seen in photos of their shows from the seventies.

This book is a must read for any fan of history, George Washington or Kentucky. The research done to create this book was incredible because it gave me a real sense of what was actually transpiring during the US expansion toward the West and of the speculative land acquisitions by the property barons and the politically elite of the day. It was also very interesting to read some of George Washington's letters which provided me with real insight into his intelligence and wit. In my opinion, this is history at its best, which sheds light on the self interest that motivated many of our founding fathers, which motivation has fostered one of the greatest economic powers of all time, the United States of America. This is far from the normal, dry and boring history book that I have become accustomed to over the years. I recommend it highly.

Fantastic, funny and smart guide. I especially appreciated the sections on transportation and food - great info on bikes and rentals, and you can eat amazingly well even if you don't have alot of dough. This being my first visit to San Francisco, I was especially pleased with the scope of information packed into this guide. But even someone who has been to SF before, like my boyfriend, will find the Cool Guide indispensable!
