Good Introduction...

This little tract functions as an excellent primer into a very under-studied aspect of the Wehrmacht. Not a lot of meat here, but then what this does have is well written. Starting with a broad overview of the maintence organizations inherant to the Panzer Regiments, and tracing their evolution from per-war through to the end. No pictures, but several tables. On the whole, this is a good introduction. Definitely not the last word on the subject though...

A fascinating book for collectors

Written from the point of view of the collector this book gives an excellent historical review of combs and hair ornaments of all types and styles. Not only precious stone and diamond items are covered but those made from more humble and available materials like turtle-shell, ivory, coral and gilt metal. The author goes into a great deal of detail about social facts, history and etiquette which lay behind the development of different styles of ornaments. There is also information on collecting and looking after these ornaments.

Endurance, together with phisical and mental stamina were the hallmarks of the Commandos, who numbered about 10,000 at their peak. With the publication of these records, which include London Gazette details, readers will be able to judge for themselves the standard of ability and courage which these men displayed. This book is a significant addition to the historical record.

This is a profondly deep book ...

... one in which a few stories of Torkom Saraydarian's own experiences, his strivings for truth and the mysteries of Life and man's Being are included. By telling some of his own searching and adventures on the Way, one can more easily relate to these very human, yet, mystical, significant, spiritual experiences.

What thinking person has not asked himself, "Why am I here?" "Where did I come from and where am I going?" "Who and WHAT am I?" Saraydarian answers these perplexing questions for us, beginning with the statement, "Man is Infinity." That ... "the beauty of the human being is that he stands as the reflector of Cosmos ... ". What a glorious revelation! He reveals some of the great truths found in The Secret Doctrine, beginning with Cosmic Days and Nights and the evolution of our Earth Chain; about the Globes, Rounds, Races, Archetypes, the Solar Lords, the Seven Logoi of the Seven Sacred Planets, the way these various energy Centers work, and the wondrous way that each is part of another Greater Life, demonstrating that 'what happens to one, happens to ALL' - and how human evolution is related to these Great Lives.

The Temple Drama explains symbolically, the evolution of the Monad and is one of the author's most interesting and inspiring experiences. Later, one reads about the Seven Initiations, the Seven Rays, and how these Rays influence our life. He gives Seven Ray Meditation Techniques and explains which ones are best to use according to one's Ray makeup, goals and chosen 'field of service'.

Very wise are the author's Words of Caution about the dangers of hypnotism, self-hypnotism, astral projection, some outdated Yogas; also, about Spirits and Mediums, about psychic attacks, how to deal with them and how to protect oneself from them.

Most illuminating is the chapter on the Process of Death, (the experiences of the 'departing one'), life after, cremation, Heaven, (Devachan), and reincarnation; information sorely needed since so- called 'death' is still greatly misunderstood and feared. This one chapter alone should help to eliminate much of the fear of death.

Lovely, inspiring and beautiful is the chapter on the Wisdom of Love, what love is, and the seven steps on the Path of Love. One gains valuable information in the chapter on the Sacred Word and the Soul. How 'the Word' leads the Spark into physical manifestation an@ then leads him 'back Home' to his Source is wonderfully told.

Information about Cracked Wheat

Amazon did not provide any information on this title, so I wanted to list some. Here is some information from the back cover:

"These ten stories present unexpected moments in the lives of a variety of characters. An immigrant boy befriends a neighbor girl living with her father in a dilapidated shack, and learns the meaning of depravity in a way that his Calvinist upbringing has never prepared him for...A minister in a small rural church is asked to drive out to the remote home of one of his parishioners, a stubborn pig farmer, to find out why the man wasn't in church the day before, and ends up delivering an unexpected sermon...A university student delivering bread door to door for the summer is invited by a lonely woman to come inside for a cold drink, and discovers a reality that is more complex than the world of his books...A young man runs away from his strict home to join a circus, only to discover that he has been pursued all the while by a familiar yet mysterious figure who catches him when he is least prepared...A father drives his teenage daughter to her dance lesson held in an old church, and learns for the first time the truth of his ancestors' belief that the body is a hold temple. Unified by their Dutch-Canadian subject matter, these stories convince the reader with their clear detail, their honest perception, and their larger vision."

Here are some reviews for the book Cracked Wheat:

"An excellent collection of stories .. intense and unforgettable characters and Cook's terse, elegant style make Cracked Wheat one of the finest collections of the past years."
Albert Manguel, The Globe and Mail

"The best stories find a poise among the demands of poetry, narrative and meaning ... It catches, as the best fiction does, the poetry of the real."
David Helwig, The Toronto Star

"These stories display not only the painter's eye for the telling detail but also the poet's skill in rendering such detail vivid. . . .Such stories deserve wide reading among us."
Henry Baron, The Banner

"These stories are as spare and as clean as a Dutch kitchen. They are concrete, visual, imagistic studies, infused with a sacramental understanding of art."
Jill Baumgaertner, The Cresset

"These stories are excellent. Reserved, sensitive, they describe the fortunes of ordinary people in their extraordinary world."

Awesome Pocket Dictionary

The sanseido's pocket japanese to engilsh dictionary was my dictionary of choice while I was learning Japanese. It is so compact that it can be slipped in a jacket pocket and is also printed small and tight to fit thousands of words! For 2 years I carried it around in Japan and whenever anyone said some word I didn't know I'd try and look it up. I marked it whenever I learned a word and now I can look through it and quiz myself on vocab by just scaning the margins for my little dots. the dictionary is in all kanji/kana so you need some background in the 50 basic Japanese characters to start using the dictionary, and watch out for the cross references. You won't be able to read them if you don't know kanji. But that's ok cuz all the most immportant words have their own entry anyway. Being a misionary its really important for me to get my point across and Sanseido's helped me out!

Wow, I'm surprised to see this book available out here, a must for any Bowie fan. It's a huge book, the size of an album cover, great photos on every single page, most in color. Thorough writing by Barry Miles gives you the initial glimpses into the artist, David Bowie, his personal life and musical evolution. Has lots of rare photos that go right up to the end of the '70's. I own two copies; a stranger and I had a tug-of-war over one, in a used-book store. She gave in when she learned I was the newer fan. I needed the copy to cut-up! I loved using this book as a reference and for designing my collages. You'll love it too!

Riveting autobiography by a member of the Greatest Generation

DEAR PROGENY by Michael F. Keleher, MD, spans the lifetime of the author from 1914, when he was born in Denver, CO, until his death in 2001 in Asheville, NC. He chronicles his boyhood and early manhood during the Depression years, and medical school and his practice and life as a general surgeon in western NC in the pre-Medicare/Medicaid era. Of particular interest is his fascinating section about WWII, during which he served in the Navy as a surgeon attached to a Marine battalion in the South Pacific. There are chapters devoted to his family, travels, surgical work in Zaire after retirement, and his personal philosophy of life, including a timely discussion of governmental domination of medicine, along with an essay on death and dying. DEAR PROGENY is a fascinating, albeit lengthy, work which will entertain, educate, and enthrall the reader. It is highly and enthusiastically recommended.
