Actually, it is hard to "rate" this book, once doing so implies a judgement which is beyond me. The five stars above do not describe my true fellings toward it, just a way to recognize M. Gandhi's greatness as one of the most proeminent human beings of the 20th century, as well as his wisdom in bringing the ancient teachings of the Gita to the present, first through his life and example, then by translating it to the english language, making it easier for most westerns to read it. Ghandi's own comments on the Gita are remarkable, pushing us beyond superficial interpretations of Krishna's words in the direction of their true meaning. I find it hard to read more than a few lines at a time, once each contains so much information one is forced to reflect on them before going on. Searching through all the english versions of books found on the origins of the world's religions, one would hardly find a better one. Following Gandhi's spirit of religious tolerance, I would recommend this translation of the Gita to anyone interested not only in knowing more about hinduism, but as the best guide to the understanding of ourselves and the true nature of the human being avaiable in the english language nowadays.

Colorful, blazing action, top-notch Howard, ignore the rest

The volume Black Colossus is part of the deluxe Conan series published by Donald m. Grant. It is a triumph of the bookmaker's art - beautifully made, sumptuous, with illustrations by Ned Dameron. The book contains two Conan tales, the title story and "Shadows in the Moonlight." Howard wrote these yarns in his mid-twenties (he would commit suicide at the age of 30) and they were first published in the legendary pulp magazine "Weird Tales" in 1933-34. These are excellent, typical Conan stories: colorful, blazing action, top-notch Howard, ignore the unholy legion of pallid imitators and rip-off artists that haunt us to this day. In Black Colossus, Conan is a captain of mercenary spearmen who fights to save the kingdom of Khoraja (and the lovely princess Yasmela) from the black magic of Natohk, the vieled one. As one character notes, "A short life and a merry one, say I, and with Conan the Throat-slitter in command, life is likely to be both merry and short." These are not my favorite Conan stories (see "People of the Black Circle"), but they are worthy nuggets from the Motherlode, the astonishing amount of good writing REH did in his few short years of productive life.

A Primer for the beginner and a fine western history reference
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-21
The Blackpowder Plainsman provides a very fine pocket history of the Great Plains experience from 1820-76. A useful timeline augments the detailed discussions throughout the book. Aimed at living history buffs who explore and reinact the culture of the era, it is also a good primer for the beginning black powder/ muzzle loader shooter. The reader will learn how to safely shoot and maintain period rifles and handguns.
The author provides information about industry sources/suppliers as they existed in the early 1990s. Many of the concerns are still in business in 2006.
The book is well researched and written with clarity. It will hold the interest of the historically minded as well as the modern hunter who uses primitive replicas and modern blackpowder hunting arms.

Terrific guide to little-known bookstores

If you are a book lover, and are visiting New York City (or if you live there!) don't miss this terrific book. Venture beyond Barnes and Noble, and find specialty bookstores of every kind, from cookbooks to yoga, from a tiny bookstall to the Strand. Some of the information is out of date, since bookstores move or even go out of business, so supplement this with an up-to-date copy of the yellow pages, but don't miss this book! If browsing through dusty bookshelves is your idea of heaven, this book will be an invaluable reference, I use mine every time I go into the city.

Hailperin demonstrates how Boole's very difficult technique for solving problems in probability logic can be easily solved by using alinear programming approach , such as parametric and integer-mixed integer techniques. This approach makes the computation of Boolean probabilistic intervals straightforward. An additional benefit of Hailperin's solutions repertoire is that Keynes's improved technique for solving probabilistic interval estimate problems ,formally discussed by Keynes in chapters 15 and 17 of his A Treatise on Probablity in 1921(the actual work in this area was done by Keynes in 1907 and 1908,respectively,in two Cambridge University fellowship theses)and applied in chapters 20 and 22 of the TP on pp.234-237 and pp.255-257,respectively,can also be solved using Hailperin's approach although Hailperin himself appears not to realize this.

Can I interest you in the original?

The Puranas are the basic source of mythology for Hinduism/South Asia although the Vedas are a much earlier source. You'll certainly not find the stories in nice neat packages that retelling of the tales provide but in the 4 volumes of the translated Brahma Purana, you'll have a nice leisurely stroll through the myths surrounding Brahma, one of the better known Hindu deities. The translation is not perfect but the problems translating from Sanskrit to English is difficult especially when little previous knowledge of the subject matter can be assumed. The Puranic Encyclopaedia (editted by Vettam Mani) can certainly be of assistance. Alternatively, reading the work of Wendy O'Flaherty or John Hawley provides a very readable introduction to the world view behind the stories.

Tho daunting at first, reading the Puranas quickly becomes addictive - wonderful stories within stories ... and should you tire of Siva, the series contains about 96 more volumes to tempt you.
