I am very lucky to have discovered Nora Roberts - and that she has all these great books which I can now listen too and not have to wait for the next one to come out. Love the audio - the Irish tone is to die for.

A welcome surprise for a Jane Austen fan!

I was told by my sister that I just HAD to see the BBC miniseries "North and South" based on the book by Elizabeth Gaskell. I am here to repeat that advice but also to add that you don't want to stop there! As a big Jane Austen fan, I was surprised and ashamed to find that I had never heard of Elizabeth Gaskell. I really enjoyed her writing--the story behind "North and South" and the characters were excellent. I also learned so much about England during that time that I did not know.

I highly recommend the Norton Critical Edition of "North and South" as well. It provided helpful footnotes throughout the story and interesting letters and analysis following the conclusion of the novel. I also must again recommend the BBC miniseries...it was a fairly true adaptation, and the characters came to life! I really don't think you'll be disappointed either way--book or DVD!

So much more!

I love the Norton Critical Edition because it contains so many secondary sources; from letters to contemporary criticism! That is useful to get a better understanding of this novel and its author. The footnotes are on the page and not somewhere in the back of the book, so it's a very easy to use edition. I'd recommed it for college use.

I can really only comment on two poems in this book because my Spanish is not very good. The two poems I speak of are I and II of "Two Enlgish Poems" and they are two of my favorite poems. They read almost like wedding vows only they are those of a dark poet to an unknown (probably not a single person.) If you can check this book out of a library, then do by all means and run on your way. Better yet, wait for a Borges fall night and stroll under the wet moonlight. Just don't miss it.

Jorge Luis Borges build up himself a Literary Man, he readed all books that worth to be readen, but Borges did not build up a Poet, his destiny was to become a poet, and he honour this destiny, Obra Poetica is a Boook of books -in the same way that El Cantar de los Cantares, really means-, and Borges Th Poet of poets. Obra Poetica holds the treasure of magic, of sadness, and often the gold of joy, this book teach what a Poet should be (verbigratia what a Man should be). A reader must deserve the privilege of piering into this book.

This is my favourite cookbook. I used to live in Powerscourt, Enniskerry, at the end of the Ave. The Avoca cafe in Powerscourt House was my fav of their cafes. After a long walk with my pals, we would either have a cup of coffee and a cream scone, or a bowl of their fantastic soup with a slice of their home made breads. The lunches with salad were also amazing...I miss it! We moved to the States, May 04. I have made so many dishes from this book and the second, they are so easy and tasty. Many wonderful memories!

Stunning Photography of Ireland's Coasts
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-26
Kevin Dwyer's "Ireland - Our Island Home" highlights that island's heritage with a stunning collection of aerial photographs around Ireland's coastline. The images, shot from helicopters and small planes at low altitude and oblique angles, provide beautiful, detailed panoramas. The contrasting scenary ranges from the urban areas around Dublin and Cork to the wilds of West Ireland. A series of captions and miniature maps describe the subjects and the general locations where the photographs were taken.

The photographs are a reminder of how varied the Irish landscape can be, and how beautifully green it looks from the air (and from the ground). Lighthouses, farm fields, sheep pastures, and small villages mingle with old forts and modern port facilities. This book is highly recommended to those who have been to Ireland, and to those who plan to go. The book provides a unique perspective on a lovely country.

We went to Ireland and picked up this book while we were there. I was afraid that it would be cheaper in the U.S. -- we paid 30 euros -- and it was. Still, we have no buyer's regret.

This is a set of stunning aerial shots of the Irish coastline. While we took what we think are very good pictures, these are beautiful pictures that we cannot duplicate because they are aerial. They will be treasured reminders of many of the places that we visited.

If you're going to Ireland, been to Ireland, or just wish that you could go, and you love to hang out in coastal areas, this is a book for you.

A Must-Have for AIDS Service Organizations' Collection!

I never realized how seriously I could be negatively impacting my health just by the way I handled my food. I've read through the book twice, and have since donated it to the bookshelves at the AIDS Support Network of San Luis Obispo County, CA. This book really should be given to each and every HIV-Positive person at no charge by their respective ASO's. Little things can truly have a great impact on our health.

Review Date: 2007-05-23
I bought this book in a bookshop here in Tokyo actually after reading through it, I worked in Japanese resturants both in Australia and Japan for about 4 years and after making a change in my line of work I wanted a reference book on some of the areas that I didn't get time to learn in full. I'd made Sushi professionally but wasn't doing it long enough to rotate through all of the different areas of prep

There are very good step by step picture (glossy photos) instructions for how to cut fish and prepare different types of fish plus there are some great novelty chirashi items for kids too.

The proof in the pudding for me though was the part on Shari (sushi rice), if that more fundumental part isn't good then it calls the quality of the whole book into question. It was certainly not lacking!

In the end, with the sushi rice in this book so good the fact that there are lots of imaginative recipes in here that you might get in a japanese home but never in a resturant on top of the standard stuff really makes this book worth while. All the fundamentals are here, plus a lot of fun stuff so you get to involve yourself to a level that suits you.

The best book on special relativity?
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-15
This book is so good it's even worth the outrageous price it costs to obtain a copy of this hard to find classic. There's a lot here that's not in any other book on relativity. For example, the beautiful and original way Synge thinks about scattering. If you're like most physicists and think special relativity is either trivial or uninteresting ignore this book.

If you read this book carefully you will see that Synge is actually something of a heretic, and he actually appears to (indirectly) cast doubt on portions of both Quantum Mechanics and Newtonian Physics. Could Special Relativity offer another way past the well known blockades of the past 50 years in physics? This book offers tantalizing clues that that just might be the case.

Elegant Mathematical treatment of Special Relativity
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-03
This book is one of the only really rigorous treatments of Special Relativity. J.L. Synge presents the subject by first wiping out all of our previous notions of space and time, and introducing each very carefully as he builds Special Relativity from scratch. It is recommended but not necessary that the reader study his book "Tensor Calculus" by Synge and Schild, to get familiar with his mathematical method of teaching. Students will profit greatly by going through his book, and seeing how he develops his ideas mathematically. This is NOT an axiomatic mathematical treatment, so it is suitable for engineers, applied mathematicians and of course physicists. The price - well that's another story.

Packed with easy to read information
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
I am currently starting a resume writing business and have been reading books endlessly on the subject. Of the books I've read thus far, this is definitely the best. It is packed with hints and priceless information on how to start writing your resume and how to get the most out of the jobs you've done. In addition to this, it also has 50 or more sample resumes written by some of the top resume writing companies in the industry and a critique on why these particular resumes are able to help get you the interviews you want. Over all the book was very easy to read and follow and had little hints on almost every page.

A Great Resume Writing Resource

You can't miss. I re-wrote my resume using this guide and it started getting me to the top of the stack. Being a computer consultant; in a highly competative field, it was important to keep my resume short and sweet. This book was the ticket. The book is broken into two parts: part one covers how to put a resume together (you the product and advertisement), form and substance, format options, first draft, look and feel, editing and rewriting. Part two contains: examples, tons of them! There is just about one of everything. Anyway, a must have for anyone concerned about beating out the rest of the pack!
