This guide has everything the policy analyst or 12th grade civics student needs, but the international data is where it really shines. If the county has a government, all the relevant data's included. Even if you don't pay attention to politics, having this guide on your shelf will (1) make you look smart, and (2) help settle countless arguments and bets. Trivial Pursuit doesn't stand a chance.

Also, make sure you pay the extra to get access to the Internet site. It includes updated information and a great search function.

This is an excellent reference tool for students and professionals. I use my almanac regularly for national and state information. As a consultant in the field, I find that I can answer questions and find the information I need quickly and efficiently. In addition, the layout of the book makes it easy to use as a teaching guide for students and interns. I look forward to the new edition.

The best book on barbecue ever written. A labor of love. Staten and Johnson have guided me to great food in many different towns and cities. Find it, study it.

If you love barbecue, this tells you EXACTLY where to go.

An exceptionally useful and informative book. This is a review of the best barbecue restaurants in the country by two men who set out on a barbecue "quest". Each restaurant chosen is described in both a charming and mouthwatering fashion by men who obviously love barbecue. In the last part of the book they offer outstanding recipes from some of the best BBQ joints as well as information on cooking and putting together your own backyard barbecue. Fun reading if you love to eat and fun eating if you follow their advice. Recommended!!!

Discovery Channel, move over. Keep this book at your computer terminal. Now you can indulge in (a lot) of learning, or just quenching your curiosity!

Not just for grown-ups--there's a whole chapter (pp313-334) titled "KIDSTUFF", with pointers to such sites as "Helping Your Child Learn Science", "Children's Butterfly Site", "Science Made Simple" and "Planet Pals". With the decline of our schools, perhaps kids using the Net to carve out their own learning journey will be a big part of the solution.

Oh, there's a whole chapter on Mathematics! Good for those among us who were unlucky enough not to have good math teachers at school (which is most of us, I guess. Good maths teachers are a rarity.) The sites covered here might very well spark passion in our younger folk who have this subject spoon fed to them in it's most tasteless form. I mention this because I, myself, struggled with Maths at high school. That struggle ended when I took charge of my own Maths training. I chose my own books & materials and methods of learning. And saw my Maths marks skyrocket.

Need I say more? Get this book. For yourself. For your kids. For your country which is already in painful need for the scientifically astute.

When I first began writing plays for senior theaters and audiences, I would have killed for the information in Bonnie Vorenberg's "Senior Theatre Connections." Now that this directory exists, I don't know how I survived without it. Senior theater names, addresses, descriptions - they're all there (including international groups). This slick publication is a must for anyone interested in the growing senior theater movement and an inspiration for those thinking about starting their own senior company.

I can't recommend it too highly!

A welcoming & comprehensive resource book on senior theatre.

Senior Theatre Connections: The first directory of senior theatre performing groups, professionals and resources is my find of the year! As someone interested in working with seniors in a creative and active fashion, this directory offerred not only excellent and hard to find resources, but triggered ideas for future ways to empower seniors and advocate for their continued artistic contributions as well as their active role in the arts community. I am also giving this directory to both a former professor from college and a former actor-friend of mine for Christmas this year. Thanks to the author, there is a wealth of information in here. I love owning this book and I generally buy the new edition every year. My investment company offers the S&P reports on their website, but I like to own the book so I can easily browse it, mark it up, flag specific stocks with Post-It-Notes, and so on. I focus quite a big on Standard & Poor's proprietary "investability quotient percentile" [IQ]for my buy-and-hold stock decisions. (I also take a careful look at the ten-year dividend history.) You will also find five-star buy vs sell ratings, target price and when set, earnings/dividend rating, fair value, volatility, relative strength, key stock statistics, dividend data, and LOTS of other information. There is quite a bit of interesting and well-written prose about each company, too---it's not all charts and numbers.

Finally a very well-put-together reference for us research-weary parents from New York and its border states! I would encourage all parents who are beginning to think about the summer of '99 to get this book very soon: There are early applicaion deadlines and/or limited space in certain academic and arts programs. There are also lots of great programs described in this reference which I would never have heard about otherwise.

A very comprehensive review and rating of 400+ golf courses from the Colonial country club to the Falfurrias,Tx muni!! If you've ever played a round of golf in Texs, your course is probably listed and rated. Excellent descriptions of the top 300.A few minor errors like calling Hole No.1 of the Woodlands TPC No.13, and a photo of a hole on Portland's Northshore CC which isn't there. But a big bang for your $$$$$ , and a true collector's item, or coffee table book.

Beautiful and comprehensive.

In these days of yahoo maps, mapquest et al, the need for something like the Thomas Guide is often questioned. Forget the questions. If you're living in Southern California you need this. It's handy for doing things like finding alternate routes (do you know how to get from Santa Fe Springs to Hollywood when the 5 and the 101 are packed?)

The CD is windows-only so as Mac guy I've not had the chance to use it. I'd be surprised if it was a significant improvement over the on-line map services, but perhaps it is.

The fold-out map (not sure if this is in the newer editions, I have mine from my 1990 and 1996 Thomas Guides in my car) is really nice if only because it more clearly delineates the city boundaries than the overview maps in the book do.

The Best Street Guide for Los Angeles

In the age of internet many of us take it for granted that we can get street map of any part of the country in seconds free of cost, and buying a map is a waste of money. This is not true if you are talking about Greater Los Angeles area and if you have used the current Thomas Guide. We have been vacationing in Los Angeles area for years and we find this guide extremely helpful in navigating around the city. Los Angeles is known for very difficult traffic and the street system is complex compared to other cities in the country. The guide has comprehensive index that lists street addresses, beaches & harbors, cemeteries, schools and colleges, golf courses, hospitals, hotels, libraries, park & ride locations, parks, shopping centers, theaters and many other information you would be interested in. It is easy to use this guide; I strongly recommend this to anyone who drives around Los Angeles area, price is reasonable and it is good value money can buy.

Thomas Brothers Maps : Los Angeles

As a long term resident of Los Angeles, I can testify that the Thomas Brothers Guide is the essential source for finding one's way in the L.A. megapolis. A comprehensive index lists street addresses, beaches & harbors, cemetaries, chambers of commerce, city halls, colleges, golf courses, hospitals, hotels, libraries, park & ride locations, parks, points of interest (including museums), shopping centers, theaters and transportation hubs -and gives a page and grid letter/number to help you find that location, street, or landmark you are looking for.
Whenever going to an unfamiliar address, I figure out how to get there first with the Thomas Guide (which I keep in my car). I always recommend to new residents in the city that they purchase a guide to help them find their way - because L.A. County is BIG ! Thomas Brothers Maps are also out on cd-rom. See www.thomasmap.com for more of their maps.
If used in conjunction with Mapquest.com to get directions, you will surely find your way in L.A.
