This book has a lot of useful information and is a fun and easy read. It is a must for anyone looking to join the ever expanding right wing conspiracy lol. As a conservative I wish such a conspiracy exsisted. R. Reagon for 2008

The book is pretty similar to the 2006 and 2007 editions. The author provides some pretty solid refutation of the most common liberal arguments. But it is nowhere near as in depth and comprehensive as Gregg Jackson's "Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies." Smith's answers are more tongue and cheek than Jackson's more thoroughly researched and documented responses. It's not a bad read though.

Gotta read it!!!

As always, The Official Handbook of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy undeniably lives up to its title. Now in an updated 2008 Presidential Election Edition, The Official Handbook of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy remains a solid block of strategies for debating with the extreme liberal left. Chapters attack and destroy the arguments supporting such left-wing causes as amnesty for illegal immigrants, giving constitutional rights to terrorism suspects, hysteria over global warming, unilaterally giving up in Iraq, using the Fairness Doctrine to censor conservative talk radio, "inside job" 9/11 conspiracy theories, same-sex marriage, and more. Liberals will also want to read The Official Handbook of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy, the better to understand and anticipate the counter-arguments that are coming, and moderates are sure to chuckle at Smith's tongue-in-cheek take on the issues regardless of personal political preference! "...welfare hurts the exact people it is meant to help. By paying people to remain unemployed and giving extra subsidies to non-working parents who had additional children, between the 1960s and the 1990s welfare policies perpetuated poverty by removing the incentive to work while adding to exploding rates of illegitimacy. Since Congress approved comprehensive welfare reform in 1996, however, we've seen dramatic improvements in child poverty and illegitimacy rates. What a surprise - when the government stops paying people to be unemployed and to have kids out of wedlock, people find more jobs and have less out-of-wedlock children. Who could have predicted that?"

A quick and fun read for anyone who is sick and tried of the baseless attacks from the vast left wing conspiracy. It provides clear cut answers to virtually all of the accusations of liberals. In the past I chose to not debate most of the topics in the book. Now I do not shy away from a discussion. It provides you with enough amunition to make a liberal stammer and stutter.

I have read many inpiratational books. This one is particularly unique in that it is both down to earth and offers the author's refreshing and uplifting perspective. The author has many rich pearls of wisdom to share and the personal writing style makes you feel as if this soulful sage is sitting right there next to you. I enjoy this book and keep it handy for those days when everything seems to be going the wrong way. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who could use some refreshing inspiration.

A primer in how we should live, "Open Your Mind, Open Your Heart" is an endearing collection of words to the wise. Like having a favorite grandparent at your side to remind you of these things, the book offers guidance in life.

The first half of the book is full of these reminders; from think positive to speak kindly, honesty matters and trust is key. Though these statements are words of wisdom and worthy reminders to readers, we don't tend to learn from simple statements. It takes a good parable, a story to get the message across meaningfully. The second half of the book does a better job at this by using poems to portray the messages. Simple and straightforward, they lend meaning to the messages and will likely be remembered more.

The author shares her wisdom in this lovely little book on life. It would be perfect as a gift to a young college student or to young adults who are setting out on their own, grandchildren and children as they begin new adventures and anyone who needs a reminder in the area of self discovery.

In reading this book, I traveled on a wonderful and thought inspiring journey of a reaffirmation of life. Marie Giles opened her heart and soul to eloquently pour on to the written page what most of us would find a struggle just to bring forth in a coherent thought. As I read her words, it is as if she has some how reached inside my being and helped to articulate to my guiding principals. I truly enjoyed and continue to enjoy this book as I keep it on my desk at work and when I need a break from a stressful situation or just a quick pick-me up I read a page or two. Thank you Marie Giles for your wonderful words!!!

This book expresses, in simple words, rich lessons that create a happier and more responsible life. The author, with warm and sincere openness, does a remarkable job of implicitly encouraging the reader to examine his own personal relationships with self, family, friends, community...world - to create a more positive outcome. It teaches that when we change others will change. After reading the book, the reader is left with a feeling of importance and well-being - that he, too, has the power to make a difference not only in his life, but in the lives of others. It will entice the reader to unlock what he already has inside - love, peace, joy, kindness... Mrs. Giles' personable expressions and desire to touch others in a positive way draws the reader vicariously into a one-on-one dialog.

She gives you many things to think about - the impact of your behavior on others, loving and respecting others as equal to yourself, being open and honest with self and others, being sensitive and aware of others' needs, seeking positive solutions to relationships, and considering your own legacy.

The reader does not have to read the entire book at once to receive the full impact of the lessons. Each lesson is stand-a-lone, yet inter-connected to make for a more positive and fulfilled life.

This book is really a great book. It is very detailed and even a lay person like me can understand it. Every condition you can think of is in it. From skin conditions to MCL ruptures. I thought this was an excellent exam book. I preferred Hoppenfeld's book, though there is less info. Of all the ones I've read, the best is still Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis. I think Magee's is better for a reference. Pocket Guide to MSK Dx is better for daily use.

I bought this textbook together with Ferri's Clinical advisor with great enthusiasm. Though this book has fewer contributors, it offers enormous amount of information on physical assessment. Other than the reference pages at the end of each chapter, you cannot spot a single page that does not have a drawing, a photograph, charts, tables, or tips. You cannot resist but feel great appreciation to the hard work invested in this masterpiece.

In the era of Internet, when many folks opted to stay away from books, this book's style offers very competitive alternative to electronic media. The only drawback is its blurred black and white photos. Although the author attempted to compensate for such deficit by many informative drawings, yet better quality photos help contemporary readers to stay focused longer during reading.

Of course, the book is about physical assessment so it stops short of complete orthopedic textbook. Each joint is discussed in terms of its applied anatomy, history taking, examination, and ends by case studies, followed by extensive lists of references. In addition to regional assessments of joints, chapters 14 and 15 discuss the assessment of gait and posture, chapter 16 of the amputee, chapter 17 of emergency sports, and chapter 18 of physical evaluation prior to participation in sport. The eighteen chapters extend over a 1000 large sized pages with two color printing, which make its reading a breathe.

The Fifth Edition of Orthopedic Physical Assessment is an outstanding reference for orthopedic physical therapists. The additional color pictures, illustrates, and upgraded tables within the chapter topics provides the reader a overview of a wealth of information. The regional and diagnose specific functional measurement/assessment tests are helpful for clinical outcome measurement data. Chapter four presents an outstanding overview of TMJ examination for an example. The chapter Appendixes with the reliability, validity, specificity, and sensitivity of special/diagnostic tests are helpful.

I looked forward to seeing the 5th edition and have not been disappointed!

... this book might resonate particularly well; it could become one of your basic books. If your birthdate isn't in that range, read it anyway because it's a wonderful book. This is a beautiful novel about complex people caught in the overwhelming cross currents of the late '60s. The author's created a complete world, with every character compelling. The writing is down-to-earth and the story flows as naturally as the river. The book has stayed with me; I remember the characters so fondly, as if I knew them. I really didn't want the book to end.

This is a fun and engaging book, and an easy, quick, and suspenseful read. The author is an exceptionally gifted writer and good storyteller, who I think does an excellent job of capturing one of the most unforgettable moments in recent time...the late 60's. It is nostalgic without being overly sentimental, and I found the characters to be "real" people with universal qualities that are instantly appealing. The setting takes place in a small rural town, and I especially enjoyed the author's very lush descriptions of the natural beauty of the area, and how he wove this aspect of the story into the overall plot. Anyone who is a sucker for a "first love", coming-of-age story, but perhaps seeking a fresh approach, should read this book.

I was there! Not really, but I feel like I was. The author's feel for this era transported me from dusty West Texas to the foggy, wet Delaware River Valley. I was a little older than Nick, the main character in the book when Woodstock happened, but whispers of it ran through our tight-knit farming community like wind through the corn tassles. We wanted to be there. So the first week in August, 1969, 3 of my friends and I convinced a long-haul trucker to take us "east"! We ended up near New York City, hot, hungry and dirty with no earthly idea how to get to "Woodstock." But the freaks knew. They pointed us north, and with thumbs out, battered cowboy hats and boots and dirty bandannas, we headed for our life-changing experience.
Read this book, Buy this book, love this book, share it with everyone you know over 48! We were ALL there in spirit. We all wanted "out"! We all wanted "in"! We none of us wanted to go to Vietnam but I did. And I took memories of Woodstock with me. Now with this book, the memories of how free and easy it was back then, when all we had to decide was what to eat for supper, where to go dancin' and who to sidle up to was foremost in our innocent minds.
Thank you Joseph Freda, for putting it all into focus for me and for taking me back to a better time and place.-Scott Johnson

It's been a while since I've read a book that I've so thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. Freda gives us a real river cruise as he extends the metaphor beautifully. His style of writing is lucid, striking, to the point, and certainly no nonsense.

Certainly, this is a "coming of age" story and rather brilliantly done. I understand the author is a product of the Defense Department's overseas schools (he graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa in the late '60s). I happened to be a young marine stationed on Okinawa at the time, personally nervous about Viet Nam (as most of us were) and when I picked up "Patience of Rivers" I felt the author had more than represented an era, of course. His book transcends a single concept. This is Mr. Freda's second novel (I've also read his "Suburban Guerillas" and it's also great!) and I can hardly wait for the next one.

Mauck Convinced Me: It's Luke's Elogium to Theophilus

It is not enough to know WHAT a writer said, we must know WHY he said it, in order to truly understand the work. My opinion is that Mauck the attorney has absolutely NAILED IT, to be quite colloquial. Acts is a poor history, but it is an excellent "elogium" (legal statement of facts required by Roman authorities), and seen as a legal document, we now understand why Luke wrote, and why he didn't write, about various things.
Since reading Paul On Trial several years ago, plus other works, I have written my own (history-emphasized) commentary on Acts and taught it several times in classes. Whether in print or in class, my teaching now has Mauck's Paul On Trial as the starting point and framework!

I am a long time student of the Bible and a lay minister in our church. This book has helped me "conceptualize" the books of Luke and Acts and will surely help me "speed-understand" the points in each book in relation to the larger inspired work and inspired word of God. The book is very well written and if you are reading this review, it should be in your library too.

I am still reading this book, but want to provide a comment. This book is worth the effort to read, study, and contemplate. I agree with all of the preceding reviews. For me, Mr. Mauck's book is functioning like a good brass or gold polish. It is stripping away the grime and tarnish of twenty centuries as well as my own understanding and appreciation of the Book of Acts, cleaning and polishing it right down to it's original design details and shape. I am now seeing things in Acts and the Gospel Of Luke that either I never was aware of before or have always wondered about but didn't know more. This book is wonderful because in its way, it reveals Christianity as it is, a uniquely radical, powerful phenomenon that is supernaturally guided and fueled, not the pervasive, almost ambient cultural Christianity that we all tend to take for granted, for good or ill.

I found that this is not a book that can be read quickly, it is more like a text book that I could only take in smaller portions in conjunction with going through ACTS in a small group Bible Study. I would like to know who the people are that are slamming this author, I would really like to know their arugments against his theory, because this is very powerful stuff, Canonization of the Bible speaking...not even Chuck Missler or Hal Lindsey thought of this theory before Mr. Mauck.

I simply can't think of a reason why anyone would doubt his theory that Luke wrote what has become to be known as Acts as a defense of Paul and the earliest Jesus/Gospel followers...and he pulls the book of Luke into the same theory, although the title doesn't mention this fact. At a minimum, Acts should have been titled "Acts of the Holy Spirit", more so than "Acts of the Apostles", as many refer to it. But now after reading this book, Acts should be retitled in all new pressings of Protestant Bibles to more reflect this book's arguments.

This will probably be his only book, unless someone un-earths some new letters or documents in an archeology dig in the middle east that were written for the same trial-type cause. This was a job well-done, by someone who gets it that we worship the Jewish faith fulfilled. God Bless.

I read this book about 2 years ago, and am still fascinated by its premise and the well-reasoned approach used to support that premise. Mauck's writing is clear and compelling, and got me thinking about the Book of Acts in a far different way than I ever had before. To the best of my knowledge, there is no other book that treats Acts as a legal document and Mauck's arguments gripped me to read further and revisit the Bible itself in light of this idea.

I am neither a law student nor Bible scholar, just a Christian interested in learning more about my faith. I highly recommend Paul on Trial to anyone who is interested in more fully exploring the early Christian church and Paul's challenges in spreading the Gospel.

Pete's cookbook is an excellent resource which I highly recommend. What makes the book 'work' for me is there are many superb examples of both simple and complex practical SQL and SQL*PLUS problems and solutions. In addition to being humorous, it is easy to follow and to understand. When I am trying to get a task done by a certain deadline, I don't have time to wade through miles of explanation. I need the answer YESTERDAY and the SQL COOKBOOK does that for me. I also teach Oracle courses and my students really love the book too.

What, specifically, is in this book?
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-24
If you're thinking about buying this book, you might want to know what's in it. This book is about 250 pages, and each page contains one example of something you can do in SQL*Plus. There is only a small amount of explanation about what the example does, often only a sentence.

The examples are all things that people who work with Oracle might want to do from time to time, but might not know how to accomplish.

So this book will be most appreciated by someone who already has a certain amount of experience with Oracle. If you use the Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced categories of Oracle knowledge, I'd say the people who would most like this book are those who are at least half way through the Beginner stage, up to people who are just entering the Advanced stage.

If you are a rank beginner to Oracle, you will not understand many of the examples. For instance, the page for Using Array Processing merely demonstrates, for SQL*Plus, the command SHOW ARRAYSIZE. That's all! If you already know what array processing is, and just want to know how to determine what arraysize is currently set to, then the command shown will be helpful. But if you don't know about array processing in SQL*Plus, what's the use of seeing this page?

Most of the book is like this. In fact, imagine for a minute there was a SQL*Plus expert in your office, and every day several people came over and asked, "I'm stuck on one point and was wondering if you could tell me how to...." Now suppose that expert typed a few commands, showing the person how to do the specific thing they were asking, and then saved what he typed. After he had 250 commonly asked questions, he put what he typed in a book, one per page, adding a title to the page and maybe one sentence of explanation.

That's exactly what this book is. It assumes you already have a certain level of knowledge about Oracle in general, and about SQL*Plus in particular. If that's true for you, then great, you'll appreciate these 250 techniques and tips, because they're things you'll probably want to know how to do. But even if you have a year or two of experience with Oracle, you'll probably find you have to look in the Oracle documentation for a fuller explanation to make sense of some of the things in this book.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. It could be a great way to learn. In fact, if you're a rank beginner, you might still like this book if you're the type of person who likes to dive right in and start typing commands to see what they do. Just be aware that you better have the Oracle documentation CD-ROM handy, because virtually none of the great commands and techniques shown in this book are accompanied by any explanation other than the occasional sentence.

If you are the type who likes to read complete explanations, I'd suggest the SQL*Plus book by Gennick. Whatever, this is a good book, it's just that you'll probably need some background before you can really appreciate and make use of it.

Its an excellent dip in and read and contains solutions to many commonly experienced problems both for experience and neophytes alike. For me its a MUST HAVE. I can give it to very inexperiened developers rather than explain for the n'th time how to define your editor in SQLPLUS for example.

Prizes is an truly terriffic book. It has a plot similar to that of a daytime soap opera, however, it is much more sophisticated and realistic. Although very exciting with many interesting twists and turns, the book displays a strong theme of man's selfish nature, and causes one to take a serious look at the ethics of the world today. The themes of great human achievment and perseverence are also prominent. I enjoyed "Prizes" thouroughly, and I strongly recommend it for readers seeking a well developed, entertaining story.

Magnifico!

First, the characters are great. Their descriptions are very thorough. You can almost see them, as if they really are true persons. Second, the plot of the story is very well-defined. Third, the flow of the story is well-timed.

One of Erich Segal's best!

This is the second book I've read from Erich Segal, the first being "The Class", and all I can say is that its a very, very enjoyable book to read. I can't put it down. After this, I'm looking forward to buying his other books as well. Good work, Mr. Segal.

A PRIZE WINNER

Erich Segal proved that he knows how to pull our emotional chains as well as any contemporary writer in Love Story and Oliver's Story. He may well just have done it again in Prizes, the engrossing tale of three brilliant individuals. Their professional quests plus their lives and romances make for rapt reading.

Child prodigy Isabel da Costa has made a significant discovery, creating a formula that Einstein was unable to piece together. Sandy Raven, his personal life bordering on destruction, has capped his dedication to research by reversing the aging process in cells, and Adam Coopersmith, a physician, has developed an almost miraculous drug to help women who have been unable to become pregnant. His already full life is further complicated by his marriage to a career-minded lawyer and his introduction to Anya, an irresistible Russian emigre. Beckoning all of them is the ultimate accolade, a Nobel Prize.

A compulsively readable tale.

Of course, I must be biased, since I have not read every intro to calculus book ever, but yet I maintain my position. :-)

I first saw this book when I was about seven years old, and fell in love with the comics. I didn't understand the math at the time, but eventually I got to calculus level mathematics in college, and thanks to this book, I not only had no fear of calculus, but rather looked forward to it.

I only wish that the authors had went on to cover integral calculus and infinite series... but I shan't blame them. This book is great enough as it is. :-)

As one who struggled with Calculus as well as "Math Anxiety", I can only say 'thank you, thank you, thank you'.
I also saw someone with a copy of the book in my first calculus class and I ran to the library. All copies were checked out! Once I went through this wonderful book, it baffled me that not one instructor was using or recommending it. Yet all the students knew about it.
If delta-episilon has you mystified, Prof McSquared can help. It was enlightening, encouraging and confidence building. I still use it as a refresher.
My only question now is - will there ever be a continuation into Calc II & III and differential? I await the arrival.

Reviewer Jerry Harper spotted a typo in the 1975 edition
of Prof. McSquared's book and calls for a reply. The answer
to problem II.3.3 on page 205 contains the WRONG statement
(BUT 1/2 e < -e...). PROF. McSquared GOOFED! It should be
1/2 e < e!! This is corrected in the Expanded Intergalactic
Edition NOW reissued and available: ISBN 0971462402.

Saved My Calc Grade

I'm a student at University of Chicago, and got into an advanced Calculus class, because of my good luck of having done well on the AP test. Immediately I was thrown into a confusing world of espilons and delta and omegas and proof and theorems not on the AP cirriculum. I am by no means an abstract symbol-based learner, so I was thrown by all these new concepts thrown at me at a breakneck pace.

Three days before my Calc midterm, and desperate to salvage my grade, I ordered McQuared's Calculus Primer.

And I was saved.

If you are a new student thrown by epsilon delta, and need a detailed, non-symbol based explanation to understand, this is the book for you. My only complaint is that the book only goes up to the first couple chapters of an real calc book (though at the high level of explanation it gives, it does those chapters justice at the highest level imaginiable.)

With its cartoony illustrations and backhanded sense of humor, Mc Square Calculus makes Calculus accessable and (dare I say?) makes learning fun.

Although a required textbook for graduate school, this book is proving to be a fun read. Highly infomative with real examples that we all can relate to in the field of Psychiatry.

Good book, but can be better

This book is great for psychiatric nurses to read; however, the chapters are too length and not to the point.

I find this book being very useful and practical for me to improve the first interview with clients. It comes with many examples which I can apply directly.

Buy it. Read it. Give it to your students.

It is difficult to overstate my enthusiasm for this book as a resource for students and practioners alike. Clearly written, simply organized, accessible and nuanced; this volume is simply the best introductory text on the subject of mental health interviewing available today.

What distinguishes this book is it's recognition of bottom-line diagnostic issues while respecting the dynamic and process of the interview which allows the diagnostic picture to emerge. By organizing the book along diagnostic lines rather than the simple domians of the interview; Shea takes the emphasis of the book off of mere data collection in favor of the interpretation and synthesis that are the true skills of clinicial interviewing. In doing so he avoids the major weakness of most introductory interview texts; which tend to pay more attention to what data to collect at the expense of what to do with the information one obtains.

The most notable enhancement to the second edition is the delineation of Shea's technique for suicide and violence assessment. This is a welcome addition on a topic which is a perrenial source of anxiety for anyone working in mental health.

It's a shame that this book is not on more required reading lists in professional schools. I reccomend this book to trainees of any professional stripe who want to learn more about the art of clincial interviewing, and to practitioners who want to benefit from the wisdom of a true master of the topic.

The best book of its kind

There are a lot of interviewing primers out there, but this is a book to really digest. The subtleties of interviewing are slowly and methodically explored with enough "meat" that you don't feel like you've just eaten a lot of cotton candy, as with some other texts. (Of the lighter texts though, I recommend Robinson's "Three Spheres".) Great book. Thanks Dr. Shea!
