I was surprised to see that another reader says she or he found "inaccuracies" in this book. I'd sure love to know what she or he is thinking of... I've read it several times, and find it extremely accurate both historically and geographically. I loved it! I felt as if I'd actually been to gold country after I finished it. Characters I loved being with...the only part I didn't like was finishing it! I'm looking forward to the sequel... or to any other novels by Honnold.

A page-turner! When's the sequel?!

A master-stroke of a novel! Gold Country has romance, action, suspense and mystery all wrapped up in one book that keeps you turning pages. I stayed up all night reading it! Loved the characters - felt like I knew them. Just the thing for this birthday of the discovery of gold ('98-99). This writer's a gem.

As Goodyear's liason to the Zeppelin Company, Harold G. Dick had unprecedented access to the ships, the information, and the people who defined this "golden age." He speaks with authtority because he was there. He can relate unique statistics on the performance of the Hindenberg in trans-Atlantic flight because he flew as a officer/observer. He speaks about the personalities of Dr. Hugo Eckner, the chairman of Zeppelin, and his son Knut, because he enjoyed the friendship of both. He also touches upon the rise of the Nazi Party, since he was a direct witness to propoganda flights (and some more harrowing events). (His photographs of the damage sustained by the Hindenberg as it attempted to lift off on such a flight are unique; Nazi officials confiscated all others, but he managed to hide his film.) His access was unique, and so therefore is this book.

This book is a first-hand account by Harold G. Dick who was the only American ever to be allowed into the Zeppelin-Luftschiffbau operations. His experiences between 1934-1938 and his extensive notes of that time provide the reader with a fantastic understanding of the complexities and excitement associated with these graceful giants of the sky....Wish I had been alive at that time to see them!!!

One of the best airship books written as the author was directly involved in all aspects of the zeppelin program. No book written so far exceeds this one in illuminating the operations and organization of the passenger airship effort. Pictures never before seen are included. The story is told in context with the political situation of the time. A must read book.

Join Mr. Cabot in a personal tour of his garden, as he brings the reader from place to place, stopping to admire his favorite things in each of his gardens. If you listen, he'll share some advice on how he solved some of his gardening problems, and introduce you to some friends that stop by. The book is quite pricey (I'll admit, I borrowed it), but the photos are so outstanding, and the writing so entertaining, it is definately worth the money. By the end, you'll feel as if you've made a new friend.

This is one of the most beautiful and inspiring books about the creation and restoration a garden that I have ever seen. The Greater Perfection shows what someone with great taste, imagination, skill and yes, resources can accomplish. What is especially impressive for me as a gardening professional is that all this has been accomplished in a zone 3/4 garden in the Canadian Maritimes. A great book for browsing and reading. Absolutely stunning - the garden we wish we all had.

Gorgeous book, gorgeous garden

The joy of this book is that Francis Cabot writes marvelously about a landscape he has loved from childhood -- and, although his garden is rarified, he remains at heart a hands-on dirt gardener, spending hours dividing and transplanting perennials, weeding, replanting, mulling over how a planting could be improved, and all the other tasks that keep gardeners occupied through the growing season and beyond.

It seems to me that people who make great gardens rarely do it just for themselves, but because they can't help but share their passion with other garden lovers. Francis Cabot has created and nurtured a brilliant garden, and now in this very personal book, he lets us in on its joys and its challenges.

The photography is exquisite. A great gift for your favorite gardener.

This is a man's true odyssey, making Ulysses look short on imagination. Mr. Cabot along with some of the most talented and imaginative landscapers around turned his place into a true dream of beautiful garden after garden. But his personality and what he loves really comes through. Lots of imagination went into different alles and infinite dream-like entries and exits. He worked with all the best people. Hobhouse is one of my favorites not to mention a few others. I could be very jealous but I am simply thrilled to be able to read it. It is long and full of superb photos and good writing. Makes other books that I love seem not quite as fabulous. Some of Cabot's friends look as though they would be a lot of fun at a cocktail party. Makes me want to buy a lot more land and keep going with determination to create a real series of outdoor Valhalas from France, Italy and England. Bravo, Mr. Cabot and all who helped!

Tilman wrote these books over a number of year, mostly between expeditions to some of the more remote places in the world. They read as if they were written yesterday - Tilman comes across as both laconic and erudite, but also with a lot of dry humor. This is a great collection of his books and as one who enjoys both sailing and travelling (and reading about climbing rather than doing it) I found these books particularly enjoyable and very well-written.

The expeditions themselves were to places like Patagonia, Kerguelen Island, Greenland and Heard Island. None of them easy places to get to, even now. That Tilman managed to sail there in an old wooden Bristol Pilot Cutter was an outstanding achievement in itself. That he managed to climb as well seems to me the icing on the cake so to speak. Loved these books, can't wait to pick up the Climbing books and read them next.

Hands down the best book of it kind. Tilman picked up the trail where Joshua Slocum packed it in and added climbing to the adventure. You'll want to pick up your ice-ax and practise bowlines for a Spring voyage to South Georgia or Greenland.

By reding Tilman's books one can travel staying comfortably home, his descriptions are so precise and complete that one can really imagine to have travelled by his side. But his accounts makes also rise the desire of adventure and of being as much as possible outdoors and in contact with nature. I would also like to ask everyone who has read one book or more by Tilman to contact me, because I am writing my degree thesis on him and I am trying to collect reviews, opinions or every other kind of comment on his books. Thank you to everyone who will answer me. My name is Brandalise Nadia.

Bill Tilman was an unbelievable man and his writings provide an unforgetable image of a bygone age. I love his dry sense of humour and matter of fact descriptions of perilous situations. His real life exploits are absolutely unbelievable. From being wounded twice in the first world war, to a coffee planter in Kenya, to cycling across africa in the 1930s, climbing Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya and the Ruwenzori, the first ascent of Nanda Devi in 1936, reaching 27,200 on Everest without oxygen 1938 (many with Eric Shipton), fighting behind enemy lines in Italy and Albania in the second world war, finally sailing to such remote regions including Greenland and Spitsbergen. His descriptions as detailed in this compilation proudly sit on view on my bookselves. The currently available biography 'The Last Hero' unfortunately is disappointing compared to J.Anderson's 'High Mountains and Cold Seas'.

Demystifying Psychic Sensitivity
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-26
Finally -- a book has arrived that scientifically demystifies the "sensitive"! For years, the general public has looked askance at individuals with anomalous sensitivities, often labeling them "crazy," since normal people don't see ghosts or spirits, talk to trees, recall past lives, or claim to influence the world with psychokinesis. Psychologists examining such sensitives using traditional diagnostic guidebooks, such as the DSM, have often been confused when they've found these individuals are often diagnosable with eight or more simultaneous valid psychological and medical conditions! Clearly there is something more going on than traditional psychology has understood.

David Ritchey's THE HISS OF THE ASP covers ten years of scientific research and fifteen years of clinical psychological insights, as it describes how many of the sensitivities of the Anomalously Sensitive Person (ASP) can be objectively measured on a Holistic Inventory of Stimulus Sensitivities (HISS). The HISS test can be administered to determine what kind of sensitivity a person has, and is included along with detailed analyses of the variables being studied. While THE HISS OF THE ASP is packed with details about interpreting test scores, it keeps the reader awake with amusing anecdotes and entertaining cartoons and quotes throughout.

THE HISS OF THE ASP will clearly be required reading for all serious students of psychology, as it clarifies centuries of confusion on the subject of how best to understand and support anomalously sensitive individuals.

I SO related to the case-study individuals in The HISS of the ASP! What a releif to know that there is somebody who not only understands, but is making an effort to communicate this information to the "ASPs" themselves, as well as to proffessionals. The subject matter is both deep and complex,so it is not an "easy read" ( i.e. a "beach book"),but the ideas presented are so valuable as to warrent one's undivided attention. I highly recommend that anyone who considers themselves "sensitive" read this book from cover to cover. You'll be glad you did!

Ritchey's book left me in thought that life as I think I know it is not as solid as the ground I walk on. What is of even more interest is that there is now data being developed in support of this, and David Ritchey is but one of the instigators for this ground breaking research.

A home run for the non-ordinary among us

David Ritchey's work and cooperation with our project as he was preparing his book, and especially the questionnaire, have been invaluable to our research here at the New Being Project where we're researching the possibility of an imminent human evolutionary jump. Are ASPs "the budding limbs and organs of our future nature"? (Michael Murphy) The situation may be even more extreme than Bob Girard from Arcturus Books states in his review when he says that Ritchey's book may be "suggesting that there is a vast underdeveloped resource of genius in the 5 million ASPs in America alone." Oh yes. . .and maybe much more than just "genius".

As other reviewers have stated, the book is enormous in scope and superior in execution. If you want strong intimations not only of what's in our species' current tool kit, but of who we are quite likely *becoming*, this book will get you wide-eyed in many places.

I also want to second the apt counsel of another reviewer: "I highly recommend that anyone who considers themselves a "sensitive" read this book from cover to cover. You'll be glad you did!"

Weird clients are nothing to new to Houston PI Eva Baum. "Hacksaw" is the tale of how she might be forced onto the trail of a brutal serial killer whose case has turned cold. Eva is close to taking it out of that file and not everyone is excited about her snooping about, not even the law itself - but Eva is determined to discover the truth anyway, not for money, but because she must know. A riveting read from first page to last, "Hacksaw" is highly recommended to community library collections dedicated to suspenseful fiction.

I always know that whenever I get my hands on a book published by iUniverse, I am going to love it. Once again, iUniverse did not let me down. "Hacksaw" is the first book in the Eva Baum Detective Series. It is written by the husband and wife writing team of Charlotte Phillips and Mark Phillips.

"Hacksaw" immediately pulled me in. It is one of those books that has so many twists and turns that you won't want to put it down. The main character, Eva Baum, is a private investigator. She does her best to do what is right, but she also has to deal with temptations that sometimes involve having to step around the law. She learns from those lessons. When pushed into a corner, she does not back down. As a matter of fact, you really wouldn't want to find out what she can do when pushed. I loved this aspect of her character. As a woman, it made me feel empowered. Even if she is just a fictional character, I had thoughts like, "If she can do it, so can I."

I also liked Eva's independence. She knows what she wants and goes for it. She is loyal to the people around her. In this story, Eva is trying to help Shade, who is a mentally ill man still emotionally recovering from having been accused of being Hacksaw. Hacksaw is a serial killer who likes to torture and dismember his victims. Shade was cleared of any wrongdoing; however, mentally he suffered dearly from the whole ordeal. When Shade is beaten up by someone seeking his ex-wife Julie, Eva steps in. She discovers that there are several people looking for Julie and none of them are reputable characters. It appears that Hacksaw himself is after her.

Eva has to step down into the dark world of drugs, pornography and prostitution to get clues of Julie's whereabouts. She encounters some really unscrupulous people. Her own life becomes at stake. She also learns a hard lesson about betrayal.

"Hacksaw" is a great female private-eye mystery. Both men and women will love this book. I am looking forward to future books in the Eva Baum series. I don't think that we have heard the last of the Phillips and Phillips writing team.

Congratulations to Charlotte Phillips and Mark Phillips for a job well-done. HACKSAW deserves 10 stars, too bad I can only give it five.

Hacksaw is a great story, and has all the elements to get you hooked and keep you hooked as you read it. It's a page turner from the first chapter onward. I can't wait to get the next book in the series.

The authors brought all the characters to life with great skill, and before I realized it, I felt like I had known them all for years. The locations and scenery also seemed to come to life for me. Since I have traveled to a couple of the places where the story took place, I could really appreciate how well the authors developed the background for the story.

As a lover of mysteries and detective stories, I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone. It really has an excellent plot and story line, well-developed characters and locations, and will ensure that you don't want to put it down for longer than it takes to pour yourself another cup of coffee. Believe me, you won't know what's really going on until the very end, and you'll be surprised at the twists and turns.

Enjoy!

I've never read anything by Harold King before, but the speed with which I finished this book is testimony to how good it is. Virtually from page one I was hooked. It isn't often that you find books like this - I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz, and find the skill with which Harold King keeps the tension, and slowly rachets it up, is on a par with Koontz. Keeping the chapters short certainly helps retain the reader's interest, and keeps you thinking "I've got time for a little more..." until you realize how much time has gone by!

The premise of the story is about an experimental procedure initially intended to eradicate or at least slow down a rare disease which causes children to age far more quickly than is normal (if you've seen the movie "Jack" with Robin Williams, you might understand what I'm talking about). However, not only does this procedure halt the effects of the disease, it also increases the subject's energy, intelligence and productivity. So this large medical company tries the same technique on healthy adults, and all works well....until 60 months when the people start suddenly aging and dying. A team is created to try to find a cure. When one is found, all of them get in a plane to go to the company's headquarters...when there's a horrific plane crash and only one person survives, although without a heart transplant, he also will die, and with him goes the cure.

So the company sets out to locate and remove the heart of the man's twin brother, as there is less liklihood of rejection if it's a twin. This is where the tale truly starts, with the twin escaping and trying to find out what's happening and why they're after him.

The basic premise of the story, then is fairly simple - how far would you go to save thousands of lives? Is the death of one innocent justified in this quest.

I give the author high marks for posing this complex question, while threading it into a thriller of such high quality. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book, if you can find it, that is.

This is a novel fraught with tension and, all at once, frightening and provocative. A brilliantly written work, from the "undisputed crown prince of suspense," that will leave you wondering where fiction begins and ends. Find a copy of this book.

This is a very informative, thoroughly researched book; from history to propagation, it has it all. The amateur will especially appreciate the succinct information to be found within its pages, without being too technical. If you've bought those plumeria cuttings at various fairs and garden shows, as I have, this is the book you need to really get those cuttings to produce healthy, blooming plants. The numerous colored photos throughout are a definite plus.

Far and away the most comprehensive book on plumerias

This is the bible on plumeria cultivation; there is no other work on the subject that even approaches its scope, thorough attention to detail, and even visual beauty. For twelve years it has been the source to which I have turned repeatedly for inspiration as I amassed my collection in New England; I have also referred scores of people to it for advice and given it as a gift several times. It's hard to imagine a more comprehensive treatment of the subject, from the overview of its history in cultivation, to the listings and descriptions of dozens of cultivars, to the step-by-step course in cultivating, propagating, and hybridizing plumerias. No detail is overlooked, and invaluable tips concerning every aspect of plumeria growing are given throughout. Along the way, the text is enlivened by views and comments on the plant through the eyes of mystics and poets both Eastern and Western. The abundant photographs by the authors are works of art in themselves. For any admirer of this extraordinary flower, this book is essential; by far the best and most beautiful work available on the subject.

(Addressing the issue of storage brought up by another reviewer: The method does indeed work, but I would perhaps not use it on first-year plants. It is important that a first-year cutting be kept growing as long as possible so that it can develop a very strong root system. After the first year, I prefer continuing to store the plants in their pots, watering very sparingly or not at all during the winter. The problem of stem rot is usually due to a soil mix which is too moisture-retentive. There is virtually no risk of stem rot if the following soil mix is used: 8 parts (by volume) soilless potting mix, 1 part coarse sand, and 1 part perlite. I have not lost one in ten years since I began using this formula).

This is THE book for growing Plumerias! Very thorough!

This book is THE handbook for anyone interested in growing plumerias. It gives all the info you'll need to be a "plumeria farmer." Whether you have one tree or 200, you'll find all necessary info about the following topics (and many more): classification and naming of cultivars, historical data, plant types and descriptions, propagation of seeds, cuttings, grafting, soil mixes, planting and transplanting, sun requirements, watering, fertilizing, mulching, pruning, hybridizing, pests and diseases, problems and solutions, dormancy, cold tolerance, winter storage, growing plumerias indoors, landscaping, ETC. You can grow plumerias in any climate if you know how. This book makes it easy. It includes MANY color photographs, and the entire book is on glossy paper. The Eggenbergers are experts in plumeria culture, and their knowledge is poured into this book. Despite the plug for their Indian religion in the introduction, it is a VERY valuable book. It's paperback, and has 107 pages, but contains all you need to know about plumerias.

Just about the only coprehensive book on this genus of tropical trees. As a frangipani/plumeria collector and grower it has been indispensable. It started me off (great for beginners ) and is still muy bible. It would be wonderful if a publisher would have the Eggenbergers write a coffee table styled book on their subject.

A Real Help in Understanding God and Growing in Him

I agree with all of the reviews written so far. I bought this book, because a woman I admire greatly recommended it when I was looking for something for a women's summer Bible study. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the book in time for the summer study, but I began reading the book myself at the end of the summer. I am just beginning the 6th week of the 40-day journey, and I am astounded at how much more I understand God and myself and how much deeper my relationship is with God as a result. I feel I have grown more and come to know God at greater levels in the past 5 weeks than I have in some years since I've known Christ as my Savior. Not only do I highly recommend this book, but I will purchase this book to give as gifts and will most likely lead a study of the book next summer. It is truly awesome!

Jennifer Kennedy Dean does a great job in revolutionizing your view of prayer. She refocuses you on the originator and provider of prayer and off of the ordinary view of prayer. I recommend this work and also the workbook and study guide, Live a Praying Life.

The forty-day retreat that this book guided me through led me into a much deeper relationship with God. It challenged me to go beyond my comfort level and to give myself daily to God's will. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to renew their daily walk with God.

I am amazed at the anointing that is upon this book. Not only my life, but the lives of several people I know have been changed into lives immersed in the Spirit. Not only does this book challenge you and your perspective on your walk with Christ, but also LEADS you into that deeper walk.

This book was a watershed experience for me. It opened my eyes to what is missing in my Christian walk. I have been so hungry to understand how to let God fill this ache in my soul to know Him. I asked Him for something and He gave me this book. I can't say enough.
