At the end of a Naval Aviator-Commercial Pilot career, I wish I had this volume for my family (and myself) during all those years. It puts into lyrical words the thoughts and feelings of "being a bird" and why I am what I am. A good read and a bedside book. We owe Reda one at the bar.

An awesome anthology

Col Reda has done a truly impressive job in colecting and selecting poems for this marvelous anthology. All the classics are included but it the quality of the lesser known poems that sets this book apart. A must have book for every pilot, and for those who love them.

Everyone who has experienced flight (and those who long to) can relate to the sheer emotion that it evokes, sometimes from deep within ones soul, often pleasant, sometimes not. As you are experiencing the sensations you may frequently be too caught up in the moment to express yourself with words, well, here they are. Yes they are others experiences, but you will find very many which match yours close enough to be called your own. Flight as many other "Romantic" adventures has it's way of engraving itself on your heart. These are exceptional expressions of a wide variety of flight forms, there's something here for everyone. A must for the enthusiasts bookshelves.

For the poet in all of us that love aviation

Master of the short story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-29
There may not be a greater master of the English short story. Saki (H.H. Munro) writes from a period that is recent enough to be somewhat familiar, but remote enough to provide a bit of an exotic feel to the settings. These short short stories (typically 5 or 6 pages) are an uninterrupted series of gems. In a storytelling style full of grace, charm, and wit, Saki is unstinting in his criticism of the selfish, the self-centered, and the self-absorbed. About the only humans who are spared his sharp utensil are children, who frequently consort with Saki in piercing his victims. Delicious fun.

I read this entire collection over about two weeks. I would not recommend reading Saki's short stories this way. Before reaching the midpoint, one is so familiar with his style, approach, and aim that the element of surprise is somewhat dulled. These should be dipped into perhaps two or three at a time and then set aside for a month or two. Don't worry...they'll keep.

An outstanding collection

This is one of my favorite and most admired books, ever. An ideal collection of ideal short stories - witty, brief yet complete, and not a word wasted in creating tone and point. Funny and satisfying. Unsettling and creepy. Deliberate use of language and vocabulary that cuts and exposes. All of the above. Unforgettable: The charging stag. The baby playing with buttercups. Schartz-Metterklume.

Recommended without reservation, for a single sitting or a one-a-night from the bedside table.

Hilariously dark short stories

Probably the only sane response, as a writer, to Edwardian England was to skewer it mercilessly. And nobody serves up a finer kebab than Saki. These stories are clever and hilariously funny. I think part of their appeal is that, although Munro can be merciless, one always senses an underlying affection for his targets. It's also pretty clear that Saki's sympathies are with those who lack clout in the established power structure of Edwardian society (children, for example), which makes me like him all the more.

A very funny book.

Saki's writing style is unique. His stories are mostly bleak and tragic. Some of his writing seems to have been influenced by his background and childhood experiences. However, they are amusing, interesting and tinged with humour.

Darkly Humorous Revenge

Review Date: 2002-08-18
Picador edition has wonderful, nicely written introduction that gives marvelous details of Saki's remarkable and short life, explaining well why his stories are usually so dark, and why he liked to take aim at stuffy old bats.

Nearly all of Saki's short stories are about some character exacting revenge upon cruel or shallow members of the British upper class. His writing sometimes feels labored and overwrought, with overlong sentences or ungainly descriptions. But his consistant style, sense of justice, and biting wit are the gems to be discovered within.

The earliest stories seemed to have a lack of balance between darkness and wit, but he did find his equilibrium and most of the later tales are deliciously satisfying.

Absolutely delightful reading if you liked Robert Altman's recent film Gosford Park, or if you are fed up with stuffy, mean upper class types.

I first read this in a Reader's Digest Condensed Book. It whetted my desire to read the full length version. Every incident, every character, rings true in a coming of age classic, set in post-Civil War Texas. It is a must-read for all western fans. It is one of my all-time favorites. I always enjoy taking it off the shelf, and indulging in the pure pleasure of following Kid as he journeys from boy to man. There are many great Westerns out there, but none will give you the same feel for the West as this book. Find it, and read it. You'll be glad you did.

This is such a good book! I'm so sorry to see it is out of print. The reader need not have any background or interest in coal mining to enjoy this story. The characters and their daily lives are so clearly drawn, you'll feel as though you are experiencing their joys and sorrows. Can't recommend it highly enough to those who enjoy a novel with substance.

I grew up near Wilkes-Barre, PA - coal mining country. I remember my mother talking about hearing the miners working under the houses when she and her friends would gather for coffee and cake - Took some getting used to for someone from Washington, DC. Every so often, there would be a cave-in & the families would wait anxiously for news. This novel was very descriptive & I learned quite a bit about how the life must have been for the Breaker Boys and the miners.

Professionals working with pregnant women who don't follow the guidelines of this book aren't worth a second visit! Dr. Robert Bradley, of The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth(R) fame, heartily endorsed Gail Sforza and Dr. Tom Brewer's work. If you want a "Blue Ribbon Baby" then you simply MUST have this book - especially if you're expecting TWINS or more. You CAN have full-term, normal-weight twins - but you NEED the dietary information contained in this book! I believe the Brewers'work will, one day, be heralded as the "long-lost" link to eradicating all of the far-too-common complications of pregnancy (toxemia, HELLP, PROM, low birth weight, premature birth, among others). I, myself, gave birth to two singleton Blue Ribbon Babies while following the dietary guidelines of The Brewer Medical Diet. If you're pregnant, don't wait another day!

Proper intake of calories, especially protein, and essential vitamins through regular food is the KEY. My parents now counsel women over the phone and you can look them up on the Internet. What your OB/GYN may not know!

My parents wrote this and other books in the 60's and 70's based on my father's (Dr. Thomas H. Brewer, Tulane University School of Medicine '51) experience as an OB/GYN and medical researcher on pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, PIH, IUGR, etc.

He terms this condition Metabolic Toxemia of Late Pregnancy (MTLP). In his clinic in one of the poorest counties in California, Dr. Brewer eliminated to 0% the incidence of eclampsia. His only "medicine" was nutritional counseling; asking what women were eating and instructing them to eat more high quality foods that they could afford.

Eggs and milk are cheap sources of whole proteins. If you don't eat animal products, you must make sure you are getting all you amino acids in the SAME meal or you won't have them in your bloodstream at the same time...that's the only way for a baby to get food, the mother's blood circulation. The only way for nutrients/proteins to get into your blood and stay there (for accessibility by the baby), is if you eat them at every meal!

These disorders of pregnancy are DEFINITELY avoidable!! Proper intake of calories, especially protein, and essential vitamins through regular food is the KEY. No special diets are required as long as enough whole proteins, water, salt, vitamins, and other essential nutrients are ingested in larger and larger quantities as the pregnancy progresses. A baby is made of the food the mother eats, and growth requires proteins...eat high quality food in increasing amounts and your baby grows to a big, healthy size.

Dr. Brewer now counsels women over the phone and you can look him up on the Internet. Please educate yourself and every pregnant woman you know with this influential and accurate preventative guide to a healthy pregnancy.

I have followed Dr. Brewer's diet through 4 pregnancies. It works. As a mother and a midwife I assure you, it works. Adequate protein, salt and calorie intake WILL prevent toxemia and other pregnancy illnesses. Please, do your baby a favor and read this book.

Review Date: 2005-07-12
Hey Baldrick_1...Are you a doctor? If not you shouldn't claim something you don't know about. I wished I had received better pre-natal care when it came to my having to deliver my daughter 14 weeks early. Not 1 doctor I had to see about my pre-eclampsia asked about my diet nor inquired if I had any questions regarding it. I've read all the claims of Dr. Brewer and it makes perfect sense that nutrition can play a factor. I couldn't hold food down for most of my pregnancy and there is no question in my mind that lack of nutrition is what caused my baby and I to become ill. I wished I had this information a few months ago...maybe my baby would be alive today.

Follow up: I had my son back in August of '06 and I followed this diet thruout most of my pregnancy. I still had problems with HELLP syndrome, but it was delayed and I was able to safely bring my son into the world at 35 weeks. He came home with me and is a thriving brilliant little boy. I still highly recommend following this diet as I believe it delayed the inevitable. The odds were against my son because at 20 weeks the same thing happened as did with my first born, who unfortunately passed away a month after she was born. The key is staying on this diet strictly. I admit the last several weeks of the pregnancy I didn't keep it up to the standards I should've (I wasn't in complete control of preparing meals at that point due to bed rest), and my son stopped growing at the pace he was on.(I had weekly sonograms to monitor his growth) The moment I discovered this I immediately arranged better nutrition. My son started to grow again, but I had become too ill at 35 + weeks to continue the pregnancy. I didn't have pre-eclampsia because no protein was detected, but my blood pressure was rising too high and HELLP syndrome had kicked in. My final thoughts... if prone to pre-eclampsia and hellp syndrome, follow this diet. If the odds are against you, it may not stop you having to give birth too soon, but it could help your baby to be born at a safer gestational age. If your not prone to problems do it anyways. Its nutritionally sound and probably the best nourishment guide for you and your baby.

As a sequel to Talon's great adventure, I didn't think it could top its predeceasor. Well, I was wrong. It not only matches it, it surpasses it. Diana has found her niche in her woven tale of dragons and humans. Brinn is outstanding, strong and compassionate, definitely a character I can relate to, and the story is more passionate than ever. i love, love, love this book and re-read it often. first of all, i'm a huge "chicago" fan - the movie, not the musical play (perhaps the original musical was awesome, but that was before my time and i've only seen the current day touring version of "chicago" and i was not very impressed). anyway, i am also a huge fan of anything 1920s, so this book was absolutely perfect for me.

it was great to hear about the stories behind the play and how two horrible murders were turned into entertainment and how the murderesses were turned into glamorous stars. it was also fascinating to see the pictures of the murderesses - the one of beulah annan is super creepy!

maurine dallas watkins' articles were incredibly entertaining and it was great to read them and then go onto the play. i love that when rob marshall made the movie "chicago", he used a bit more of the play than the muscial version did.

it's sad that watkins didn't go on to even greater things after these articles (although i do love the movie "libeled lady" - with jean harlow, myrna loy, william powell, and spencer tracy - that she collaborated on the screenplay for). but it's awesome that her legacy turned into such a popular musical and movie!

i would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in "chicago", the 1920s, crime writing, and media sensationalism.

Wonderful!

This publication of the play that inspired the hit musical is amazing. Not only is it the original script, it gives wonderful newspaper articles of the time period and gives a real sense of time and place. As an artist, it was amazing to perform this piece. While the musical is a hit, it owes everything to this beautiful and strikingly funny but touching play. I highly recommend it and enjoy!

This book was so helpful to me because it gives every bit of information about the crimes and it even has all of Watkins' Tribune articles from the time. The script for the original play is an added bonus, and it is fun for me, as a "Chicago" and Fosse fan, to compare the original play to the musical and movie. This is well worth the price and a must-have for any "Chicago" fan.

This book is amazing if you are looking to find some history on the play. I have seen the non-musical produced in Ashland and will be directing it myself in the next couple of years. This book includes the full original script, which is amazing in itself, but also includes a fantastic introduction my Thomas H. Pauly. The articles are a joy to read because you really get a sense of Watkins' style of writing.

Watkins' days a court reporter inspired her to write the script for what was to become, itself, the inspiration for one of the best musicals of our time. The daily reports from the court trials of the real life muderessess in Chicago were certainly very telling. The fact that the women who escaped death row or life sentences were white women, society women, beautiful women, and most poignantly, women who killed their lovers - not their husbands. This reminded me of how people get caught up in the soap opera of life and love to glamorise all events. If you are a lover of the musical, this is an interesting book to read.
