I LOVED this book and I went on line to order it for some friends. My book is in full color and the ones that I ordered on Amazon are black and white only and it take away some of the comic book effect that the book held special. I LOVE this book but I am very dissapointed that they do not specify when the books are in color or black and white when this book comes in either.

A succinct review of basic parenting skills. A little too optimistic when describing time out procedures, but otherwise a great "primer" for parents.

I was haveing big problems with my 4 year old adhd son and his consler showed me this book and you know alot of this book was me! I really did not realize it till I was showed that I was just giving my son control of ME and I was not really being the parent. I was letting me son run My life and this book made me see that. THANK YOU FOR COMING OUT WITH A BOOK TO SHOW US PARENTS THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PURRFECT PARENT BUT WE ALL ARE STILL LEARNING! I am still learning to this day. My son seems happier that I am not putting so many adult decisions on him but that I am letting him be a child! once again thank you so much and I hope other parents find this book as helpful as I did. I do not own one yet but I'm trying to get one.Times are rough for me right now but as soon as I get back on me feet, And hopefully soon I will buy the used one. Hope everyone else gets what I did out of this book. Thank you so much Charity Castleberry

Everything you need to raise polite, nice, well-mannered kids (works for pets, too!) is in this book. It's not rocket science, but you DO need to be consistent, firm, and rational. It might be easy to dismiss the content based on the humorous presentation, but this book will solve (and prevent!) your child(ren)'s behavioral and discipline issues.

PLEASE REPUBLISH THIS TITLE! We loaned ours out and it is gone. We want to give this book to all our friends with kids, but can't and now we can't lend it.

This is a light hearted book about the very serious job of parenting. Sound simple advice that works! I am anxious for this book to be re-printed. I used it with my now 14 year son an would love an updated version to use with my 18 month old twins. I would definately give this book as a gift at baby showers or to those parents that are having difficult times with their children. So please, please, please give us more of PURRFECT PARENTING!!!

Good book about QM with a sound mathematical foundation

Review Date: 2008-05-24
This is a good book about quantum mechanics which starts out with the history of how quantum mechanics was derived. Afterwards it introduces wave mechanics and further on matrix mechanics. The math is introduced along the way, and is thoroughly explained.

My biggest problem with this book is that it never mentions Hilbert spaces which is an important part of the mathematical foundation of quantum mechanics.

The best advanced undergraduate quantum text book

In my oponion this book is one of the best books about quantum mechancis. It has very good explanations and clear expression. I have studied several books about quantum mechanics such as Gasiorowics, Liboff and Ohanian but this book is the best one.

Great QM Text

I have to agree with the other reviews. This is an excellent QM book for advanced undergrads or grad students. Beware, you'll need pencil and plenty of paper to read through the text and fill in the gaps between some calculations(like from equations a,b,c,d we can derive e).

A quantum leap in the right direction!

This book is a rare Physics text that successfully bridges the gap from the undergrad to the grad curriculum. The math is accessible to anyone who has passed Junior level linear algebra and math methods while the Physics is more detailed than that of the typical undergrad quantum mechanics course. The authors give careful details of many important calculations, together with the interpretations of the steps in the context of both math and physics. All these features together with the clarity of the writing and diagrams go to make this a great transitional text.

Throughout the book Bransden and Joachain give equal importance to the wave and matrix formalisms of quantum mechanics. A nice feature of this book is the presentation of the Schrodinger equation in momentum space - a treatment not found in much detail in many undergrad texts. Significant amounts of theoretical background required by Chemists (especially on atomic spectra) is also developed in the book. This renders the text of use to Chemistry majors who have had the requisite mathematical background mentioned earlier on in this review.

I bought this book as a Senior but kept referring to it again and again as a grad student. Recently, I've begun to rely on it for the Quantum Mechanics portion of the Modern Physics class that I now teach. Each time I look at it, I appreciate the clarity, breadth and depth of the material presented. This tome is definitely worthy of greater publicity.

This is a great book. The most comprehensive undergrad QM book there is. Everything is clear and to the point-- no unnecessary fluff and no skimping out on the math (for the most part). If you find the Griffiths text to be lacking then I highly recommend this one. Although I will say this is written more like a Math book than a physics book (which I happen to like). The problems at the end of the chapter certainly reflect this as they are usually of the form: Prove equation .... Show that the energy levels are approximately ....

The fundamental difference between B&J and Griffiths is that Griffiths will often leave important results as problems-- whereas B&J will not skip out on them. While it is instructive to work out the important stuff at least once-- its pretty damn annoying when you're trying to review the material later on and don't want to work anything out.

This book has more than you'll ever need as an undergrad. I'm also surprised that a book of this caliber is so cheap. Buy it-- its worth the money.

After reading The Sun Also Rises, I was given a copy of this book by a friend to "browse through." But when I started browsing, its down-to-earth style and wide breadth of knowledge in uncovering Hemingway's icebergs had me reading the book cover to cover. Not only is the prose captivating but the edition includes maps of Paris, pictures of locations in the novel--all kinds of great stuff that enlighten a reading of The Sun Also Rises. Highly recommended!

I've always loved The Sun Also Rises, but this book opened my eyes to all the reasons why I love the book. It is an instructive, amiable, mindbogglingly-informed commentary/glossary written with an ease rarely seen in critical work. Definitely the most intelligent, complete and expansive work I've seen on any Hemingway text. This book is necessary to all students of American literature.

Epiphany: Revealing Hemingway's "dignity of movement."

One of the best things about reading Hemingway is that he writes in a way that appeals to both the common reader and the serious scholar. With this masterpiece, H. R. Stoneback achieves the same sensibility. First time readers will be awed by the "dignity of movement" they find in
Stoneback's commanding and systematic explication of The Sun Also Rises. Even more, the depth of Stoneback's analysis sets a standard that will be the benchmark for studies of TSAR. But one of the best things about this book is Stoneback's writing. Right from the beginning of the book he manages to write in a way that illuminates. When I read the first section "Titles" from "Front Matters" I knew I was in for a treat. The book has a measured pace that seems to constantly build towards epiphany, which proves to be an extremely rewarding experience for the reader.

The inaugural volume in the Reading Hemingway series from Kent State University Press, this book is a mandatory companion to Hemingway's novel. Stoneback's exactitude gives the book its backbone. It should put to rest all poorly-informed readings of SAR. Buy two copies. Buy three. Use it in the classroom. Give it to people who don't get Hemingway. Give it to people who think Hemingway's work takes place in a violent and meaningless world. Give it to people who have a deep appreciation for the spirit of place.

From the rhino with reoccurring foot fungus, to the transport of a whale shark, rescuing dolphins left homeless by Hurricane Katrina, black bears with disappearing bones and eels starving for the love of a former owner, The Rhino With the Glue-On Shoes is an assortment of true stories featuring these and other unusual patients. Ever wonder how diagnostic tests are performed on giant Pacific octopus? How does one go about capturing and relocating a herd of destructive bison that are terrorizing the French countryside? Can an orphaned baby beluga survive to adulthood? Who do you call when a giraffe in your care needs a special orthotic (you get a lot of hang-ups)? The common thread pulling this diverse collection of stories together is the caring of the medical providers and the lengths they will travel to comfort and heal the animals in their care. Stories from all over the world and all types of animals, captive and wild will keep you engaged. Any animal lover will appreciate this

THE RHINO WITH GLUE-ON SHOES is a fantastic read for people of all ages. The commitment and ingenuity of these zoo professionals is inspiring. I am astonished by the case of the anorexic eel, mortified at the damage done to Earring Boy, and delighted by the story of Tulip, whose owner's devotion and love is a testament to the impact animals have on our lives. Spelman and Mashima have edited a lovely book, which should be read by young, aspiring veterinarians, conservationists, and all animal-lovers.

Rhino has special appeal because of its various points of view and authors; because of its short essay-length articles; because of the variety of animals and ailments; because of the connections between animal health and human health. In short, it's a terrific book and an easy read, and I've had rave reviews from ages 11 to 76. It would make a great Christmas list book, as its appeal is to a wide audience.

This second book about the Rivers Family is not a disappointment. It is just as wonderful as the first book. Mr Ainsworth is a master storyteller. His characters have a depth that is just awesome in the old fashioned sense of the word. The reader lives with them and carries them in their heart long after closing the last page of the book. I wanted more. I recommend this book as a must read. I am thinking of Jake, Grey Boy, Lance and Granpa. They are in my heart till next time.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading Rivers' Crossing, the second novel in the series written by Mr. Jim Ainsworth. The novel relates to countless number of families living and trying to survive in small Texas towns in the fifties. Just couldn't put it down and am going through withdrawal anxiously waiting for the next book in the series.

Rivers Crossing continues the story of the Rivers family begun in the Rivers Flow. It is a superbly written tale of what life was like in rural America during the 50's. This time the story centers on teenage tribulations of Gray Boy (the oldest son), but includes the entire family in the story. The book is especially appealing on those of us who grew up in that timeframe. Jim Ainsworth has written another moving novel that will certainly affect your emotions. I can't wait for the next one!!

This book is well worth your time. It's the second in a series of stories about a couple of young men growing up in north east Texas during the drought of the 1950's.

Forget the other 'coming of age' stories you've known. The Rivers boys take their own paths. Gray Boy, the rebel, finds himself in a sticky situation, not of his own making. Jake, the youngster, watches Gray Boy's troubles and tries to find answers to questions that bother him so.

Read the first book, IN THE RIVERS FLOW, and then pick up RIVERS CROSSING. You won't regret the time you spend with the Rivers.

Enjoy.

If you think you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also referred to as CFIDS-Chronic Fatigue Immume Disfunction Syndrone, or have been diagnosed with CFIDS, THEN THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. When I got this book, I said "Hooray, I'm not just lazy and crazy". I cannot begin to say how much better I felt after reading this book. It didn't help my symptoms, but it let me know why I had these symptoms. Chronic Fatigue is such an undiagnosable disease that most physicians think that you are just crazy, a hypochondriac, or they misdiagnose you and put you through hundreds of dollars worth of tests. Even when I was diagnosed with it, my other doctors refused to believe it. It was not until my husband saw an Olympic contestant talk about her battle with CFIDS and how she hoped she had a "good" day on the day of her performance that he then understood what I was going through, and he became my main supporter.

This is by far the best book I have read on CFIDS. Would recommend it to everyone. As the other reviewer states, it was written in 1995 but science hasn't brought us a cause or cure since that time, so it is still a very valuable book on ALL aspects of this illness. The author is writing from experience...as she has CFIDS. Book is very informative, she's very relatable, and she shows a deep understanding of the challenge in living with this life changing illness. A truly outstanding book! Read this one.

This book may be getting a bit dated, but it's still among the best resources available on CFIDS. Many CFIDS self help guides read like advertisements for their authors, but not so with "Running on Empty". I'm hoping that Dr. Berne will offer an updated edition sometime soon. If/when she does, I'll be back to order my copy (to replace the old, dog-eared one I passed along to someone who needed it more than I did).

The Second Siege is the perfect book to curl up and read. It's funny, descriptive and exciting, running at a fast clip from where Book 1: Hound of Rowan ended. You learn more about mysterious Cooper and David and the complex personality of Astaroth and meet new characters that make you wonder if you should trust them. The illustrations really pop at you and draw you in - the fact that Neff is both the author and illustrator makes this creative fiction even more enticing. I've just finished reading Book 2 of the Tapestry series, The Second Siege. What a fantastic sequel! Frankly, an even better book than the already wonderful first one, The Hound of Rowan. Not only is the writing better, but the characters are more interesting and developed, and the scenes and story lines are very exciting, filled with intense chases, close calls and epic battles. There is the obvious overarching good vs. evil theme but the heroes are played by characters that are not so unbelievable or "perfect" and who have their own problems and personal demons that they must contend with while at the same time having to deal with their roles and responsibilities in the grand theme of it all. Adults young and old will truly identify with the characters. Finally, the author does a great job of accentuating good qualities that all parents would appreciate such as character and integrity. Looking forward to Book 3! Kudos to the author!

I love the characters, and the story is incredible. I can't wait for the next book.

The Hound of Rowan set the tone for this exciting series--introducing us to the intriguing characters and world of Rowan Academy with warmth, humor and a fantastical dose of magic. The Second Siege turns that world upside down, starting with the arrival of a mysterious visitor who sets events into motion that will change Max's life---and the world at large--forever.

Max and his roommate David embark on an epic journey that takes them away from the safety of Rowan into the chaos around them--from the burning streets of Spain to a wildly technocentric underworld in Frankfurt, Germany and an alternate, time-bending universe.

All of this is vividly laid out by Neff, who deftly balances the action with strong character development, emotional weight and moments of laughter to break the tension (hot diggity!). It's clear that while weaponry, physical strength and mysticism will help in the battle against the coldly cunning villain, Astaroth, the ultimate keys to survival are the bonds of friendship and love.

The Second Siege kicks The Tapestry into high gear. It's a darker, more thrilling tale that will draw kids deeper into this exciting and imaginative series.

Can't wait to see what happens next!

It's been awhile since I've done any diabetes-related reading. My son has had type 1 for over 10 years, and I wondered if it was time to revisit some of my patterns I've developed in dealing with him and the condition. I found a number of helpful tips and aids in the book The Secrets of Living and Loving with Diabetes: Three Experts Answer Questions You've Always Wanted to Ask by Janis Roszler, William H. Polonsky, and Steven V. Edelman.

Contents: Hey, Who Invited You?; Even Robin Needed His Merry Men; Diabetes Police and Diabetes Criminals; Like a Pebble in a Pond; Don't Be A Diabetes Couch Potato; Is It Time to Panic?; Testing, Testing, and More Testing!; Does the Checkout Lady Need to Know?; Mind Your P's and Q's; Sex and Other Fun Stuff; Suggested Resources; Index

This isn't a long read (around 180 pages), and the payback for your time is pretty high. The book is written for both those who have the disease and those who live with someone who has it. After covering the material related to the chapter, they end the chapter with two sections. The first is titled "What A Person With Diabetes May Want His Or Friends To Know", and the second one is "What A Loved One May Want The Person With Diabetes To Know". These sections have a small handful of bullet points that relate feelings and emotions that each side would like the other to understand and recognize. If the whole subject of diabetes is one that you have a hard time talking about, these can serve as discussion points with your partner and will help focus the discussion into some productive areas. I realized that I've probably gone too far in one direction in terms of identifying Ian with the disease ("Does the Checkout Lady Need to Know"). I need to step back and understand that some people need to know and others don't. There's also a number of things I'd like Ian to read here, but we all know how hard it can be to get 19 year olds to read something *you* want them to read... :)

I would definitely recommend this book, especially to someone with type 2 diabetes. This can be something that is not taken as seriously as it should be, and having the discussions this book can produce could make all the difference.

Auden wrote much poetry in many different forms. He was a very learned poet with strong connection to English poetic tradition. Among his most known poems are those which are also my favorites,"Musee des Beaux Arts", "In Memory of W. B. Yeats" and "September 1,1939". The concluding stanza of this last poem gives a good idea of the special colloquial power of Auden's rhyme and rhythm.

"Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

In that poem also contains the great stanza, " Lest we should see we are/ Lost in a dark haunted wood/ Children afraid of the night/ Who have never been happy or good."
Auden was too a considerable critic of Literature, an outstanding Anthologist, a man-of- letters in a true sense.
I do not know the range of his poetry well, but the anthology pieces are filled with memorable lines.
Edward Mendelson, a well- known Auden scholar, in this work presents a number of original poems which Auden as he was wont to do improved for the worse.

W.H. Auden is truly, as noted by editor Edward Mendelson, a twentieth century poet. Auden had a firm grasp on the essence of contemporary politics and culture and possessed a knack for bringing a reader into his world. This selection spans the entire body of Auden's work, and contains several early poems which are hard to find, as Auden refused to have them republished in later collections of his work. It is a good introduction to Auden, but I recommend reading it along with Collected Shorter Poems 1927-1957, as that contains the revisions that Auden made to his poems over time, in his fervor for complete honesty in his work.

While Mendelson's selection is well put together and a good representation of Auden's early craft, the revised poems are generally much stronger (though often bleaker in tone). Many changes, such as the famous revision of September 1, 1939 to read "we must love one another and die" rather than "we must love one or die" were made to reflect the author's shifting attitudes. However, other poems improve significantly with Auden's editing, and if this book is the only Auden you read, you'll miss out on the full depth of his power as a poet.

The poetry is splendid -- Auden is a brilliant, sensitive, musical and entertaining writer -- and the selection is fairly representative. Mendelson prefers Auden's later poems to his earlier ones, so the twee middle-aged sequences "Bucolics" and "Horae Canonicae" are included complete, while most of "Twelve Songs" (which has some terrific love poems like "Fish in the unruffled lakes", "Funeral Blues" and "Tell me the truth about love") is not. Still, there is enough in here, esp. in the first two-thirds of the book, to give you a fair enough taste of Auden's verse to entice you to buy his Collected Poems.

(You'll still need the Selected; it has a couple of good poems that Auden decided not to republish, and superior versions of some early poems.)

For many of us,the poems that we read in childhood and adolescence are those that stick with us the most. When I was fifteen, I bought this volume and promptly fell in love with Auden's poetry. His work showed a restlessness with the social and political state of his world, and I found that I could connect with it both intellectually and emotionally. To this day, I can revisit this book's pages feeling like I am visiting a childhood friend. Auden expressed some feelings I shared with him, and I was moved by his ability to express them better than I ever could: with frankness, wit, and grace. A must for any literary enthusiast (or any curious fifteen-year-old, for that matter).

A marvelous introduction

I can do little more than echo the other reviewers here. This is all a 'selected poems' shoud be: introductory and selective. Yes, "Funeral Blues" is missing. But no one can complain about what is here, which includes "In Time of War", the great sonnet sequence; "The Quest", another long sequence; and the entirety of THE SEA AND THE MIRROR, which is based on Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST. If you are, however, only interested in his love poems, I'd have to steer you toward TELL ME THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE, a nice little chapbook containing only those.

My own personal experience with this book may be relevant. It has served to introduce me to one of the finest poets of the last century and sparked a desire to read THE COLLECTED POEMS, also edited by Mendelson, to see how Auden re-wrote thirty of the brilliant poems here included. I'm continuing on my voyage; hope you are starting on yours.

I purchased the book for one sermon A DIVINE AND SUPERNATURAL LIGHT

I was amazed about how many of the sermons were right one with where I am at in my life.

Gods word is time less and this is a clear translation of what God has to say to his people.

As always, excellent!

Edwards is excellent in presenting the gospel. His sermons are quite substantive and always pointing the reader (or hearer in his days) towards God. Should you desire a great book of some of Edward's greatest works, this is the book for you.

Beware of nutcase reviews of this book.

John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards are, without question, two of the greatest theologians in the history of the church. Who is Mike DeSario?

Do not get this book if you're pursuing modern or postmodern theology. Do not get this book if you're looking for gimmicks.

If you want to get down to basics ... salvation and sin, heaven and hell ... read this collection.

The original 'fire & brimestone' sermon ... "Sinners in the hands of angry God" is worth the price of the book if you're unfamiliar with Edwards.

You can see the evangelical power of this mighty pastor grow in this chronological collection.

Edwards is a gift to us, well worth rediscovering.
