This is such a nice book that depicts the last part of the movie vividly (make sure to collect vol. 1~4 for a complete set). It's nice to have watched the movie first, and then own the book so you'll enjoy and understand the whole story even when there's no dialog. I can watch the movie over and over again, but with the books, I get to review any part of the movie any time and any where I like, and it's very lovable for all ages, boys or girls, guaranteed!

One of the best manga books ever!

Five Inspiring Words: It's a Frank Capra Book.

To begin with, several adjectives to describe this wonderful book: 1.) candid, 2.) inspiring, 3.) poetic, 4.) instructional, 5.) spiritual, 6.) humanitarian, 7.) humorous, 8.) compassionate, 9.) courageous. From what I gather, it took Capra approximately three years to write this book, and what book it is. To be honest, this book is perhaps one of the best pieces of work we might ever have about the legendary director, the course of the twentieth century, and the people who have helped shape the film industry. This book demystifies the often deified directors, actors, moguls that ruled Hollywood during the golden age, reminding us of the universal bonds of humanity that link us all to each other. In many ways, it reads like a Frank Capra movie -- life-affirming to the end. For the younger generation (X'ers and Y'ers) who might question the values of their fathers' generation, this book is a must read. Underline this fact several times because when Capra takes you into his fold and shares his world, it is an experience you won't likely forget. Most history books seem to be written with a detached sense of objectivity from an supposedly impartial historian. The results of such labor is often an uninspiring book that keeps the reader at arm's length from the fascinating history, often boring the reader to no end. No so with Capra's autobiography. Capra reminds the reader that people are still simply people, no matter what generation, no matter which occupation. There are always going to be saints, martyrs, bullies, intellectuals, clowns, idiots in every walk of life. Such an example can be seen when Capra served in World War II and was privy to a touching moment with the great Admiral Nimitz. The old war hero had just come back from seeing three thousand men he had sent off to war -- some of them now without limbs, others without faces, yet all of them saluting him and thanking him from the bottom of their hearts. Nimitz broke down and wept, his shoulders so burdened by the sadness of his men's suffering. Hitting his desk over and over again the Admiral cursed the war with ever fiber in his being. After a brief moment to recompose himself Nimitz thanked Capra for being in the same room... allowing one tortured soul to connect and draw strength from another. Personally, it is easy to find yourself laughing when he laughs and crying when he cries. Like all classic works of literature, this book is so fresh in content, that it inspires the reader to look into his/her own heart and find the beating pulse of humanity and to take pride in the fact that one such as Capra was able to do so much through his films. I look forward to reading this book again and again. And perhaps, others will agree and do likewise.

Frank Capra's superb autobiography provides loads of fascinating information about the film industry during a thriving period, when he was one of filmdom's most popular and successful figures, as well as about the mindset of this intriguing man of accomplishment. What is refreshing, along with his basic candor, is that despite his enormous success he retains a humble and highly humane touch.

Some of the most humorous anecdotes of "Name Above the Title" involve madcap, always colorful Columbia boss Harry Cohn, who took his Gower Street studio from the ranks of "Poverty Row" to the that of a giant. Capra helped significantly with box office smashes such as "It Happened One Night", "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington","Lost Horizon" and "Meet John Doe." It took awhile, but the Capra film which has soared to top spot in the hearts and minds of the public was the 1946 release starring Jimmy Stewart, "It's a Wonderful Life." The star was so enthused about the story that he pitched it personally to Capra after driving over to his house. Capra relates the time that he begged Cohn not to drop a struggling young cartoonist from the Columbia payroll, predicting that he would be sorry. Capra was right as the cartoonist was a young, meek Iowa farm boy named Walt Disney.

One of Capra's great contributions was directing and producing the excellent World War Two documentary series "Why We Fight." He tells about being called into the office of Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall, who asked him to undertake the project. "But I've never done a documentary!" a surprised Capra replied. Marshall pointed out that he had never run an army before either, and that the American way during the critical war period was for citizens to learn jobs with which they were previously unfamiliar. Capra saw Marshall's logic and the rest is history.

This autobiography is fascinating enough for the interesting information about Capra's life. What makes it even better is that you are reading the revelations of a good man who did his best to instill positive values into his films, and to help in his distinctive way to make America a better country.

I have read many, many books on Hollywood and auto/biographies in general and this book ranks as one of the best ever. It is a very entertaining book that doubles as a great history of Hollywood through its golden age. Capra interacted with Hollywood's legends and reports in a funny, candid and emotional way his dealings with the likes of Harry Cohn, Sinatra, Disney, Monroe and many more stars of the thirties and forties. Do not think the book is dated: yes, some of the names are meaningless to us today but the perspetive and lessons contained in every single page are timeless. this book tells you better than any others how movies are made or should be made...

From the opening chapter which describes the incredible saga of how this man (as a young child) and his poor Sicilian family managed to come to America, to the end of his inspiring life and his brilliant career when he suffered cluster headaches so severe he could barely function, but kept his head up, this book captivated me. Capra exemplifies the American Dream, where a poor immigrant can become anything he sets his mind to be. Especially significant is his pure and honest soul. This book is SO inspiring.

Every autobiography will pale in comparison after you read this one. Frank's book should come with a

Mr. Rogers creates a great book for young children who've recently become big sisters or brothers. There is a fair representation of some of the things big siblings might be feeling especially about sharing their parents. The color photos are good, but the clothing everyone wears is dated, fortunately little ones don't mind when you read it with them. This is a really good book for new big siblings.

The New Baby is a book that discusses the feelings that older siblings can have toward a new baby. In the typically simple, direct style that Mr. Rogers uses on Mister Roger's Neighborhood, Fred Rogers helps a child understand that both the baby and he/she are special. He also offers the assurance that parents have enough love for every child in the family.

The book has warm photographs of family members interacting with babies. These are useful in discussing what it will be like to have a baby in the house. I think this is an excellent book to read with children who are soon-to-be brothers or sisters.

From 2005 to 2007, I was a youth pastor in Kansas. The team and myself wanted the students in God's Word more outside of services and for there to be opportunities to interact with other students about Christ.

So, we started lunch groups in our schools and empowered students to lead them from our church. They met twice a week and they used the 1 Minute Bible for the dovotional.

I would highly recommend the 1 Minute Bible for personal devotions or for groups to meet as our ministry did.

I give this four stars only because many of the days don't include anything beyond the scripture passage and a quote. The days that do, however, provide excellent devotional thoughts. Along with this, the entire framework of the Bible is covered in only minutes a day. What more can be expected of one book (outside of the Bible itself?).

The best way to use this resource is to study it in a group with the curriculum written by the author available at simplyyouthministry.com. Use this with your class and the impact will be much greater.

I have since passed it down to my sister and she reads it every day. A great book with great intentions.

years ago and things turned out ok. I loved the illustrations
too. I read Stephen Moon and the author certainly express
her self well. She's a good writer.

I enjoyed Ora's Farm so much. I read it on a Saturday afternoon outside on my deck sipping coffee. When I finished it, I took a deep breath, relaxed and watched the birds for another 1/2 hour, contemplating the lessons Ora taught his young friends.
I bought 2 extra copies as gifts. One for a 12 year old who has divorced parents and one for my son who is 21 and has had some dramatic changes in his life for the past 2 years.
Ora's Farm reminded me of what is important in life. Sometimes we all need that.
This would have been a memorable and significant reading for me as a young girl, too. I would have been a little easier on myself had I realized other children had fears and difficulties just like I did.
I thought the illustrations were beautiful and really helped bring the characters to life.

Stumbled Upon

Review Date: 2008-04-10
I stumbled upon this book a few years ago, not expecting much... and it blew me away. I'm pretty well-versed in Catholic theology - didn't think I had much to learn on the subject of Mary - but I was wrong. This book is filled with a wealth of profoundly striking ideas and insights I had never considered before. Although the book is not an apologetic for the Catholic Church's Marian doctrines, in its presentation of the early Church Fathers' teaching on Mary, it is one of the most profound and persuasive apologetics on the subject I have ever read.

Barring any professional theologians who happen to be reading this post - and even those, I suspect, would have something to learn from this book - I can almost guarantee that if you are a believing Catholic you will find many new, wonderful, and inspiring insights about the Blessed Virgin Mary on these pages.

No less an authority than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, called this book "One of the most important theological rediscoveries of the twentieth century." At a minimum, this book demonstrates that Catholic Marian doctrines are rooted very deeply in Church history -- it establishes that very clearly indeed.

But beyond this, the book is INSPIRING -- it shows how the role of Mary is related in an organic and fundamental way to the role of Christ, not only at the time of the Virgin Birth, but for all time and for all believers -- all of whom are, like John, beloved disciples of Christ. You and me included.

"Behold your mother," Christ said upon the cross (John 19:27). This book penetrates those words to their deepest meaning; indeed, there's a sense in which it could be said that the entire book is a meditation on the full meaning of those words.

But the book treats too of those "difficult" passages, such as in Matthew: "While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, 'Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.' He replied to him, 'Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?' Pointing to His disciples, He said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother'" (12:46-50).

In explaining this passage, Rahner quotes one of the Cappadocian fathers (late 4th century), who wrote: "Every soul carries Christ within herself as in her womb. But if she is not transformed through a holy life, she cannot be called Christ's mother. Yet whenever you receive Christ's word within you, and let it live in your heart, and build it up with your thoughts as in the womb, then you can be called Christ's mother" (p. 79-80).

In other words, Christ must be built up or "formed" in us (cf. Galatians 4:19). Or, as Gregory of Nyssa (a 4th century Church Father) put it, in each Christian, Christ "grows in diverse ways... According to the degree of grace in each, and according as each is ready to receive Him, He comes as a small child, as a growing boy, or as a mature man... Thus every Christian can become the mother of Him who... said: 'Whosoever shall do the will of My Father that is in heaven, he is My mother'" (p. 80-81).

The book just gets better and better as Rahner delves deeper and deeper into the mystery of Our Lady and the Church.

Short but powerful, this is one of the rare books where deep theological teaching rises to the level of an inspiring sermon, causing the reader's mind to be flooded with light, while the heart soars.

A beautiful exposition on the Church and Mary

This book was written nearly fifty years ago, and so it may have a dated feel at times, especially since the Church has put forth encyclicals (Marialis Cultus) and other writings on proper devotion to Mary. However what this book does do beautifully is to draw on scripture and tradition to illustrate the connections between Mary, The Church and salvation history. It helps the believer understand their place in all of this. It's a short and enriching read. I particularly enjoyed reading what the Church has been saying through the centuries about Mary.

Excellent Introduction to Marian Devotion
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-18
I just finished "Our Lady and the Church," by Hugh Rahner. It's a terrific introduction to the direction that Pope John Paul II and now Benedict XVI would like Marian devotion in the Church to take. It certainly is a strong supporter of the Marian dogmas promulgated by the First Vatican Council in 1870, which Protestants (including myself) universally take issue with. But, it certainly showed me how the proper devotion that a Roman Catholic pays to the Virgin Mary necessarily must, and does, increase their love for Christ himself, and how the exalted view of Mary that the Church takes flows completely from the very exalted view that it takes of Christ. It does not deal at all with the many abuses associated with Marian devotion, preferring to commend what it sees as the best way, rather than attack erroneous ways (which we all could learn from).
The whole book is full of the most wonderful quotations from the Fathers about Mary and her relationship to the Church, however given to the philosophical flights of fancy that tend to charcacterize much Marian devotion. And a wonderful little poem that Luther wrote while still Catholic.
In short, it's a very interesting book which can greatly aid in the understanding of why the Catholic Church views Mary as it does, even if it not particularly convincing to most Protestants.

A profound and thought provoking analysis

For anyone (Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish) trying to understand the high place accorded to Mary and her veneration in the Catholic(and Orthodox) Churches, this book is a good place to start. Written by Hugo Rahner, S.J., brother of better known "modernist" theologian, Carl Rahner, S.J., this book lays out, with numerous quotes from the Eastern and Western Fathers, medieval and modern theologians up to the brink of Vatican II, the perennial teaching of the Church that the Virgin Mary the immaculate Mother of Jesus is type and for-runner of the Church,a new creation as "Spotless Bride of Christ." - "What He bestowed on Mary in the Flesh, He has destowed on the Church in the Spirit:Mary gave birth to the One, and the Church gives birth to the Many, who through the One become one." - St,Augustine.

Thus the "Woman Clothed in the Sun giving birth to the man child" of Revelations 12:1,2,5 stands for Mary as iniciator of Salvation in Christ and the Church groaning in fulfillment until the end of time. In this dual yet single role can be seen the mediation of graces of Mary and the Church

It is also in this light, according to Fr. Rahner, that the the Catholic dogmas regarding Mary, especially that of the Assumption takes on meaning. "Our Lady's Assumption, the final history of the body of the woman who gave birth to God, is therefore not so much an exception to the rule, but much more a fulfilling in advance of what is promised to the whole Mystical Body of Christ." This is a must read book on Mariology.

If you've ever wondered what life was like growing up on a Western ranch or homestead, read this book. It's an authentic glimpse into the Western life, a life close to nature and close to the bottom line! But a life rich in freedom and living! Great stories, good reading - what more could you ask for?

If you like anecdotal stories about life in the late 1800s/early 1900s, you will like this book. It tells the story of a family that moves from the central ozarks of Missouri to Northwestern Colorado in the 1920s. It is autobiographical in nature, but the author is a superb storyteller and the pictures he paints of life in and around Craig, Colorado during the Great Depression are poignant and vivid. (True for the telling of the trip from Missouri to Colorado, as well.) Anyone who is interested in Colorado history, life during the Great Depression, or simple human interest stories about real poepl in real life will enjoy this book. For those who are not related to the author, the brief sections about family geaneologies might be a little boring, but these are a small part of the book and do not detract from the overall book. If you are from Northwest Colorado, who knows? Your name might be in the book (or at least one of your ancestors). There are also a few stories dating before the life of the author concerning events that were told to him by the people involved.

Mr. Irby's book tells it like it was with a generous dose of humor. It also has some great genealogy info. You can really feel the cold of those winter nights, the hardships and the good times they all had. A hard book to put down!!

This is a great source to have access to (especially if you're looking up pediatric drugs at home and don't have access to UptoDate or Micromedex). It is a thorough reference. The major down-side is that it lacks an index for generic/trade names. Maybe it's there and I still haven't found it, but this is a problem when one is trying to quick reference a drug. Nevertheless, I haven't found a superior drug reference in a readily available book in pediatrics (online, I'd say Micromedex is even more complete, but in a book, this is the best). Also, for neonatal dosing, I would prefer Neofax.

This book is very handy in helping you calculating pediatric doses for common over the counter products as well as prescription drugs. The more popular databases for drug at times do not include some of the common over the counter products so this is very helpful for that. It also offers a comprehensive description of the product including contraindications and cautions. It also includes very helpful appendices which deal with the not so common conditions seen in pediatrics.
