Martini is the answer! No matter who you are, if you're studying the human body- Martini is your new best friend. I ran across Martini in Chiropractic school per a professor's recommendation. From then on it was just short of a love affair with Dr. Martini (or his work at least). Unbelievably well laid out and basically thorough. Bravo Dr. Martini! It is a miracle work if you want to read it to gain a SOLID foundation before you attempt more advanced (both) anatomy AND physiology courses and books. Bravo Bravo Bravo!

This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. I also recommend Key Facts of Anatomy and Physiology isbn;0971999694. This last book shows you what's important to study for. Both books highly recommended.

I have to say, I used the 5th edition of this book and know that the 6th is better as I worked with another student who had the 6th edition. EVERYbody who wants to know, particulary physiology, should have this book for reference. The anatomy is also excellent particular the discussions on vascular and the venous / arterial systems and the nervous system discussions are clear!. I reference this book all the time.

First, the writing style of the author is impeccable and very approachable for such a technical subject. You will pick up the subject matter very quickly.

Second, and the reason I initially bought the book, are the photos and illustrations. I have looked at many geology books, and this book CLEARLY stands head and shoulders above the others, for fantastic graphics.

In closing, I will refund your money if you are not happy! :-)

Why do the hills and valleys, mountains and plains and rivers and lakes around us have the shapes they do? John Shelton explains the origins of rocks and landforms in uniquely clear and simple logical reasoning always illustrated with superb photographs closely integrated with the text. He leads the reader step by step through the evidence and reasons by which we know the meanings of the textures of rocks and the messages of fossils and of the shapes of hills and valleys.

Shelton uses many splendid aerial photographs throughout to great advantage. But the greatest virtue of this book is the simplicity and clarity of the text. Any student can follow this text and any interested person will enjoy it.

Shelton wrote when plate tectonics was new and unsettled and he chose to omit it entirely. Do not be put off. There are abundant other sources for plate tectonics. There is no other introduction to the nature and origins of rocks and landforms to compare with this.

Tops For Learning To See The Earth

Review Date: 2008-04-03
If you open this book in the middle and just start reading, chances are you'll find something great. Maybe it's a landslide that came down into a valley with enough momentum to run up the other side. Or an orange grove that's been split by a fault and because of the rows you can see how the earth's moved. One interesting thing after another.

It also works if read from beginning to end, which I did recently after randomly dipping into it for years. It's excellent that way too.

The format is mostly black and white aerial pictures explained by clear, descriptive prose. As a non-geologist, I usually just skipped over the words I didn't understand. It was still great.

The author opens one's eyes to landforms, the shapes of hills and mountains, of rivers and valleys. I see so much now when I travel that I would not have seen without this book.

I particularly recommend it for those who've just bought an RV and are about to travel through the American southwest.

A recent hiking trip to the Colorado Plateau spurred me to remove this volume again from my boxes of old college textbooks. I purchased this book in 1966 for my college studies in geography and geology, and it will follow me to my grave. Bar none, it is the best book ever printed for graphically displaying, in high-quality black and white, the intricate and wondrous patterns of earth's structure as seen from the air. Forget written theories of uniformitarianism, cataclysms, expanding and contracting earth, plate tectonics; this book displays the resulting landforms as no less than art, and provides graphic definitions that cannot be equaled with words. By all means, find a copy and keep it...forever.

I had read this 30 years ago or so when I was a kid and I had fond memories of the book but couldn't remember what it was about. So, I bought a copy to read to my 9-year old daughter as a bedtime story and we were not disappointed. It is captivating, but you have to read the whole thing for all the pieces to come together and for the story to make sense. My daughter had me read some pages over and over because they were so funny.

Like the others, above, I am amazed this book is not in print. It is on my "must read" list; my father read it to me, I read it to my wife and children, and I encourage lots of people to read it. The publisher who didn't want to reprint it must be the cousin of the guy who turned down publication of the first Harry Potter book.

Laugh out loud, heck, read the whole book out loud!

As with the other two people who have reviewed this book, I was introduced to it by my father. I very much enjoyed listening to this story. In the 20 years since, I have read this book several times - my copy is now ragged! I have also enjoyed reading this book to young people while working as a day care provider. There is enough mischief and mayhem, enough sneaky twists, and enough action to keep your attention. The language is, at times, poetic, at other times just plain funny. It is truly a crime that this book is not in print. I want to send a copy to my eleven year old half-sister, but don't want to give mine up!

This book is one of the funniest ever! Years ago, when I drove my latency-aged children across country, we had the book in the car, and to avoid sibling conflict on the long road trip, I had my daughter read it aloud. It's one of my most treasured memories. It has everything: Treasure, bad guys, good guys (Indians), clever kids who win the day. The publisher needs to get its head examined for not keeping it in print.

My favourite book, hilarious and fast-moving.

Arizona Slim tells the story as if he's chatting to you, and the misspellings help a lot. While reading you feel like you're in the book, with him. All the characters make you seem very close to them, and they are hilarios in their ways, language and actions. Their names are enough! For people who dont like long, slow moving book this is the one. Fast moving, interesting, original and above all funny. The book has a quality that you can't describe, it's so good. Really, whoever you are, you MUST read it.

Honestly, I'm thinking of buying another two copies of this book (I have one now) so that I can cut out and frame some of the pictures - (I want two copies because some of the images are back to back). The images are stunning, and there are clear examples that show the influence of Islamic and Moorish art on Christian cathedrals, especially in Spain. Truly a beautiful and scholarly introduction to this lovely part of the heritage of the whole human race.

From Gothic to Renaissance

Review Date: 2008-07-26
"Gothic" is the second book in a series that covers Western European art and architecture from the 11th to the 19th century. "Gothic" actually deals with two periods: the Gothic period proper, and the Early Renaissance, mostly it's Northern (Dutch) version. The editor believes that the distinction between Late Gothic and the Renaissance is problematic and somewhat artificial. Thus, the book takes us from the 12th century well into the 15th century.

A large part of the book deals with Gothic architecture: cathedrals, churches, city halls and (to a much lesser extent) castles. There are also chapters on Gothic sculpture, painting and goldwork. The chapter on painting also includes Giotto, Fra Angelico and the Northern Renaissance (especially the latter). The text is very comprehensive, and probably mostly appeals to serious students of European art and architecture. What makes the book of interest to the non-specialist are the lavish illustrations. There are photos on almost every page, most of them in color, and all of it for a bargain price!

Personally, I must admit that the "pure" Gothic cathedrals don't really appeal to me. I find them boring. And yes, almost half the book shows Gothic cathedral interiors or facades, most of them strikingly similar to each other... The second half of the book is more aesthetically pleasing, showing how the original Gothic style changed as it spread to Germany, the Netherlands and Bohemia, and how painting developed during the Early Renaissance. The section on goldworks shows many interesting objects.

I like the "Baroque" volume of this series more, but if you have an interest in the Middle Ages, or "Old" Europe art and architecture in general, this book is nevertheless recommended.

Big beautiful book! Coffee table caliber.

As one of those asked to write a blurb for the cover of the book, and who made one or two modest suggestions, I come to this with some prejudice. However, having been an asset based lender for some thirty five years, I have never seen a more complete treatment of the practical aspects of business finance.

Many books are written on such a theoretical level, that they are worth little to the entrepreneur or the CFO of a mid-sized company. Ken Marks and his team have made the complicated seem almost simple. They lay out the details for you in laymen's language and provide resources for capitalizing your business.

If you are serious about your business's growth and profitability, you need this book. It will help move you to the next level.

This books is one of the few of its kind that I could not put down. Each section was interesting and most were relevant. I am sick of reading about pure high tech and software only plays. This book is not only very educational, it is a reference manual that never leaves my desk. The Database of funding sources is invaluable.

Reading Moorman was a delight because I did not find myself bogged down in the political intricacies and machinations of the English Reformation. He did a fair job of portraying the Edwardian Reformation and the age of Elizabeth and the Evangelical revivals of the 1700s. He also demonstrated sympathy for the Broadchurchmen and the role of reason and the challenges of modern science to a literal reading of Genesis. He was less sympathetic to the Oxford Movement and the efforts to re-catholicize the English Church, but not so much that an Anglo-Catholic reader would be overly offended. Overall a great read, but one that is still a very bried introduction to the complexities and nuances of that magnificent thing called Anglicanism as it has unfolded over the centuries.

This book was a required text for a seminary class I'm taking on (duh) English Church History. Compared with previous Church History texts I've had to use, this one is absolutely outstanding. It will at times leave you wondering a little about the political or social context, because the focus is heavily on the Church. I find this to actually be a plus, as the secular side of things could probably double or triple the length of the book. Moorman reads very easily compared with other history texts, especially considering it's age. History is not my favorite subject, but I have thoroughly enjoyed this text (and the class).

I learned a lot from reading this book, which is actually a seminary text. The prose is somewhat pedantic at times, but still readable. It is a good history of Christanity in England and surrounding lands. I learned a lot about the balance between church and state, and how Angicanism has gotten to the point that it has. I would recommend it for anyone interesting in the history of England as it is more than just a text about the Church in England. For Episcopalians, it helps in an understanding of the current crisis in the Anglican community.

This book covers philosophical arguments for the existence of God, and then gives evidence for the God of the Bible. The quality that sets this book apart from other apologetic books is the full color pictures used liberally throughout the book. This is a good book for you if you feel threatened by the secular attacks against the truth of the Bible, or if you want a good book to lend to a "seeking" non-Christian. The book covers philosophical arguments for the existence of God and physical evidences (such as archaeology) for the truth of the Bible, and discusses how we know the Bible today is essentially the same Bible as what was originally written. The one weakness I saw in this book was that the author claims "The big bang remains the best explanation for the current state fo the universe (p. 44)." He goes on to show this model still requires a creator, but it is unfortunate that he refutes atheistic causes for the creation of the universe, and then apparently tries to merge the atheistic philosophy he just refuted with the Biblical description of creation. The rest of the book is great, especially effective with the use of many pictures.

The BEST summary of Christian Apologetics

Review Date: 2007-04-04
I have a sizeable collection of books on apologetics, but Doug Powell's wonderful book is the best compilation I've seen of all the major work in this field. The book is written in a style that is easily readable and usable for lay people and has beautiful graphics that add greatly to the content. The progression of his argumentation is excellent: he begins with traditional arguments for what we can observe about the Creator from the creation and then describes the "glass slipper"(made up of these observations) that must fit any religion that would claim to offer a true interpretation of our existence and the universe. He then proceeds to make very sound arguments for why the Christian position is the only worldview that can account for the reality of the universe and of man.
I would recommend this book very highly to anyone interested in Christian apologetics.

This is a great overall book on horses. However, the section on how horses actually move is really lacking. It does a good job discussing the basic walk, trot, pace, canter, gallop, but then says anything else is "artificial." "Any other gaits are caused by chains, chemicals, and shoeing practices". I have a completely barefoot Tennessee Walker trail horse that has some lateral gears that are not covered by this book at all.

It was so nice to read a book that didn't spend most of the chapters on grooming and mounting. You won't find that here. The four authors are some of the best horsemen in the business and Anthony Borton was one of my professors. With eloquent descriptions of history and nature, The House on Slocum Road-Echoes of the Past, is an incredible journey taken with her heroine, Lottie Slocum, who comes to terms with her own life and the gifts that she has to offer. I loved Lottie and the way that this story reflects on the remarkable talent of this notable author. Dahris Clair writes with a loving spirit that captures the heart of the reader as to where one never wants the story to end. Thank goodness for authors as D.H. Clair. What a blessing it is to have her as an author in our world.

It all started with a warning from a carnival gypsy many years ago: a little girl named Lottie Winslow has a gift; she can look into the future. As years passed, this prediction was pooh-poohed by most of the girl's family. But the prediction was true nonetheless. And many facets of this gift were revealed through mysterious happenings that occurred in and around an old family home in Sacandaga, New York.

A letter edged in black, with blood dripping from a corner. Screeching tires as a car careened out of control. Dreams and nightmares that never seemed to go away.

This is not, however, a horror story. Nor is it a story about fantasies and mental aberrtions. Far from it. This is a story of multi-generational family love and warmth as seen through Lottie's eyes, emotions and experiences. Her story includes gentle reminiscences, a persistent resilience, and the kind of resolutness that all can admire. Her life is also spiced with strange occurrences, vague impressions, and haunting visions.

Throughout this book, D. H. Clair provides sketches of the past and the present that are both authentic and colorful. Historical accounts of the Civil War era are blended with the blunt realism of everyday life today. Sensitive descriptions of the natural world are juxtaposed with the harshness of accidents and medical emergencies. The mysteries, however, are still there--in the center of it all. So, too, are the mystical, psychical parts of life that many readers have experienced in their own lives at one time or another.

All of these threads are woven together with skill and tenderness by the author. This is the kind of book that can warm you on a snowy afternoon or cool you on a sweltering August hammock day.

D.H. Clair's "The House on Slocum Road" has so many twists and turns you won't want to put it down for a moment in fear of losing track of the story. The author has successfully created a labyrinth of characters and a storyline that are strung together and wrapped around the novel's heroine - Lottie Winslow. You will fall in love with Lottie at the get-go, and at first you'll be impatient when the story veers away from her temporarily, but never fear, when it comes back, you're in for a ride. Ms. Clair's clever weave begins to strengthen about a fourth of the way into the book and doesn't let go of the reader till the end.

The story is jam-packed with scenes of the personal effects of the civil war between the North and South: of Lottie's family then, and of Lottie's family in the present. At first it feels as if two stories are running parallel, but in a different manner than what you would expect.

Ms. Clair has written a drama, a tragedy, a romance, a para-normal - all rolled into one, and her comedic sense shines through in Lottie's dialogue in Part Two. You will be intrigued, surprised, and will experience a satisfying read in "The House on Slocum Road." I certainly did.

I recommend it highly.

An Awesome Page Turner!

"The House on Slocum Road" is, by far, one of the best works of fiction I've read to date! The pages literally turned themselves. From the first page I was hooked & I even had trouble forcing myself to stop reading & go to bed (smile) - it is that good!

This story surrounds a woman named Lottie Slocum who, after recently being diagnosed as diabetic, begins having odd/frightening dreams - someone is beckoning her to another time, but who? and why? At the same time, she also begins having visions where she's able to see events before they happen - yet her husband (with whom she has a beautiful & close relationship with) doesn't believe her - or worse yet, he thinks she's beginning to lose her mind.

The answers to what is going on lie in Lottie's vacation home - a house that has been in her family for many, many generations. While searching for these answers, you get to follow Lottie on her journey to self-discovery & acceptance of her psychic "powers" - and what a journey it is! Through hidden journals re: her ancestor's Civil War experience & actually travelling back in time, Lottie finds her answers - & they are both shocking & wonderful at the same time. I don't want to give too much of the story away - so I'm going to leave it at that.

This is a beatifully written & researched book. In fact, there were times when I actually lost myself in the storyline - able to visualize in my mind the events as they unfolded. There are so many twists & turns that's difficult not to get caught up in this book.

Overall, I HIGHLY reccommend "The House on Slocum Road" to anyone who enjoys paranormal suspense/mystery books. It's truly an awesome read!

"The House on Slocum Road" is a must read for lovers of the esoteric. The title and cover perfetly encapsulate the mysterious aura of the supernatural and time travel.
The protagonist, i search of familial connection, is propelled backkward in time to the Civil War period. The discovery of an ancestor's chronicles including the Battles of Bull Run and Antietam, add extra deph to the story.
Obsessed with digging through her past, she is rewarded with an encounter of the ghostly kind. The image entices her to "Come home." When a violent storm assaults the old house, the protagonist seeks rfuge in her great grandmother's bed. When she awakens, it is to a different world and new people.
The author has done a creditable job of historical research of the Civil War period. Set in the Adirondacks, the story exudes warmth and gentility.
Ms. Clair cooks up a tasty mystery and ends on a positive note with the inclusion of an old amily recipe for Cinnamon Walnut Scones. Yummy!
