This book is a treasure of facts and helps for any family member, friend, or professional seeking caregiver/personal assistant care for another, or for an individual seeking such care for him/herself. The book is reader friendly and proceeds in logical steps. The information is practical and useable. Compassion for and insight into the feelings of the care receiver are a part of the writing and this is invaluable to all as they move through the process of finding caregiver/personal assistants. The author "thought of everything" and addresses every question one could have because he has been in the situation of finding care for himself and knows what does and does not work. His expertise and information will be a welcome and comprehensive guide to anyone who needs to find, hire and manage caregiver or personal assistant help.

As indicated by the title, this book gives you all the information you need to "Find, Hire and Manage the People Who Help You (or your Loved One!). The author speaks from profound personal experience of his more than 30 years of living as a high level quadriplegic. As one who has know Mr. DeGraff since early in that experience, I have followed him as he has gone through rehabilitation, college, graduate school and beyond to where he is today and can readily vouch for his abilities. No detail has been left out of this remarkable publication.

Finally, DeGraff has a new book! He is THE authority on personal care assistance, and I trust his experience, wisdom and advice. We have waited for this new edition for several years, and we find it chocked full of practical how-to's. This is a must for families seeking advice on managing care at home, for students and for health care workers. This book should be required reading for legislators and public policy advocates because this provides practical, up-to-date, relevant information for real-life settings; and it reminds us that legislation must support independent living and home care. With the graying of America, more and more people are going to realize the value of living at home with effectively managed personal care. Agency care often does not work, and it is not aimed at promoting the care recipients' need for independence, respect and wholesomeness. Managing care at home provides sensible and healthy options -- and DeGraff's expertise and advice shows how to go about it. This is learning from the best! Margaret A. Short, Ph.D.

There is no better time to consider the building of a car free city than now, and this is one of the best books out there on the topic. Many people believe that a high density living environment translates into a loss of freedome and personal space. We think of tall sky scrapers thousands of feet high to accomodate high density living and we associate that with stress and other negative factors. The author shows how by living in a little more dense environment, and building better public transit systems we can actually experience more freedom, not less freedom in a high density environment. Comparisons between LA and Venice, Italy help tell the story. A must read if you are interested in this topic.

Mr. Crawford has done us all a great service by crafting a wonderfully readable book that beautifully blends vision and practicality. The reference model for Carfree Cities proposed in this meticulously considered work could quite possibly be the blueprint for reviving not only the art of building but the art of living itself.

Crawford does an excellent job of opening up your mind to the possibilities of a world without cars. He takes a very close examination of two polar opposites Los Angeles, CA and Venice, Italy. He explores the ways cities have been built, and how they could be built. I particularly like that he draws up what a model car free city coul look like, even suggestions on where the first carfree city could be built. Many books out there talk about the destruction that has come along with an automobile dependent world. Crawford tells us how we could possibly escape it. There is a very desirable lifestyle possible between that of urban tenement slum and suburban car slum, and this book charts the way. The future lies in high-density habitation surrounded by very low-density green space. Walking, biking,a nd public transport will be the prime movers, not cars.

More than half of the world's petrol sources have already been exhausted, and now, with rapidly industrializing countries with huge populations like China and India, demand and competition for petrol will skyrocket and accordingly prices will too. This is one of the three bases that Crawford sets for the radical revisioning of global city planning to abandon autocentric tendencies, and perhaps the most persuasive. The two others, that auto-use is destroying the Earth and that car-free developments, like Venice and very old sectors of European cities, are intrinsically more beautiful and livable areas, are both valid and convincing. But recent economic realities, as is currently being evidenced in global oil prices, perhaps serve to allow the reader to actually consider the feasability and necessity of abandonining continued suburbanization, rather than just relegating the thought as a utopian but impractical solution.

This book was written in 2000, but the predictions made regarding economic necesities are still valid and the book does not feel dated in the slightest bit. It was a joy to read - the author quite clearly wasn't an English major but the style he utilized - straight-forward and casual, in conjunction with many visual examples - is consistent with his overall vision of the carfree city: efficient, user-friendly, and pretty. At some parts the book is a little dry, but these stem from the specific topic of discussion (like freight transportation, which is very thoroughly conceieved) and are not indicative of the greater whole of the book. One of the more memorable sections of this book compares the strip malls and highways of Los Angeles against the vendors, stores, canals, and alleys of Venice - it perfectly demonstrates the ridiculous and sadistically-hilarious sacrifices we have made to live in our "car-dependent jungle." A little history of how we got to where we are is also included. Things don't have to be the way they are - and with new and pressing economic realities, they're not going to be able to for long either. Here's a fabulous concept for revisioning our cities.

I am a 20 year old college student. I had to write a nutrition paper for the Syrian Culture and I used Helen Corey's cookbook. I found the dishes extremely interesting and excellent tasting when made. The nutrition value for many of the food items was great for low-fat, high-protein, high-potassium, and high in other vitamins and minerals. It's an excellent choice for all cultures, religions, and ages!

Helen Corey's book is more than just a cookbook however; she offers insight to the heritage of the foods and the traditions these regions bring to International cooking. I recommend this book to all cooks; whether they are already familiar with these foods and cooking style or are just beginning to branch out from their our family's favorites. Ms. Corey has provided a feast a great recipes and photos that will stir up an appetite in anyone.

Helen Corey's cookbook and video, really takes one on a journey to the Holy Land. Oh, how my Mother and Father would have loved them. The cookbook, Food from Biblical Lands, and video, The Art of Syrian & Lebanese Cooking, brings back many loving memories of my Mother cooking Syrian foods. We were blessed with her until she was 91 years old, and she did most of the Syrian cooking while she was alive. I have tried to remember her different recipes, and with Helen's cookbook and video it helps bring it to life. It is as though Mother has returned to remind me what to put into each recipe. It is a precious bit of the past, here in the present. Thank you Helen for this wonderful gift. Keep up the good work.

Each recipe is explained in detail and if an ingredient is uncommon she explains where to get it and what it is. She writes the recipes so that the end result turns out wonderfully. I grew up eating this food in Canton, OH and her recipes taste just the way the old Syrians would have prepared it. I was so happy to find a cookbook so true to the old world style. There are meat recipes as well as vegetable based cuisine, desserts, and even how to make the old Syrian cheese usually served with breakfast. It is a concise, great book and I wish more people knew how to prepare meals like this.

This book by Eva Schloss is totally amazing. Not only have I read the book more than once I have actually met Eva Schloss herself!! We managed to meet her because my year six teacher knows her and managed to arrange a meeting for all of the year six's to meet her. She read bits of her book to us and we were shocked and dismayed by the state the Nazis treated these people. She showed us her tattoo, and said that you could only just see it because the person who marked her done it lightly because her mother had begged them to do it lightly. I also got her book and she signed. I was very pleased.
This book shows the horrors of World War II and what it was like it Auschwitz-Birkenau.

I also teach an extensive unit on the Holocaust and Anne Frank. I am always on the look out for survivor stories for teens. This book certainly makes the cut. It is easy-to-read yet does relate the horrors of her experience in the camps. Her relationship to her mother and others in the camps shows the definite role companionship played in survival.

Eva's relationship to Anne Frank is simply a plus for the book. To have lived so close to Anne and even played in her house with her cat makes Anne become even more alive. Eva's relationship with her brother parallels Anne's relationship to Margot. Interestingly, Heinz and Margot seems to have similar personalities as do Anne and Eva. ...Her courage to speak about this terrrible time in history is a reminder to us all to remember what happened and those who are no longer with us and have no one to remember them.

Eva's Story is another powerful tale coming to us from the Holocaust. Eva Schloss was the step sister of Anne Frank (her mother married Anne Franks father after the war). Her story parallels the story of Anne Frank in many ways: both were young girls in Amsterdam, both went into hidding, both were betrayed, and both were transported east to Auschwitz. The only difference is that Eva Schloss somehow survived. If one wonders what would have happened to Anne Frank if only she had lived, the answer is in Eva's Story. The book is powerful, well written, and easy to read. It includes 16 pages of photographs as well as comments marking the major events of the war. The last pages of the book carry her story up to 1984. The book is another powerful contribution to history and survival.

They're sweet and real and funny (just like Beth Moore always is) - and they're a real encouragement to me to see the long view of godly parenting, rather than getting stuck in the preschool weeds. I also gave it as a gift to my mother-in-law whose chicks are long gone from the nest, and she loved it too.

Her Godly approach to motherhood made me realize that God gives us children as gifts and blessings - regardless if it is for a few months in utero or for decades on earth! She gives a personalized insight on how to try to raise children to love Christ - in a world that often makes that difficult! I would highly recommend this book to any woman - moms, daughters, moms-to-be, or as I was when I read it, a mom wanna-be!

For people who want to go beyond Hollywood and explore the real world of film, this is a great starting place. Here is a book that covers the whole gamut of film study. Concise and precise, this book is eclectic and bold. It is hard to put down. If you are at all interested in film, or if you are tired of the Hollywood offerings, then this is the book to begin with. It includes all the essentials, but in a compact form. I loved reading the author's way of writing and opinions. Not just facts, but passion is displayed in this amazing book. I look at films differently now. I appreciate them more, and feel much more comfortable talking about them because of this book. A great introduction to the cinema from an academic point of view, as well as offering a wealth of recommended films that are very up-to-date and historically important.

I recently read General Krulak's "First To Fight"... again! I was privileged to have met and served under the General when he was CG FMF Pac. His forthright leadership style has served as a great model for Marine Corps officers.

Of particular note was the General's assessment of the Sergeant Mc Keon incident. The General is correct. The Marine Corps has a unique way of correcting a portion of the system which has gone astray. The Corps owned up to a problem! A fitting end-result of the Corps' efforts to fix the recruit training system at MCRD PISC was the implementation of a new physical fitness program for the whole Marine Corps. It has sustained us.

Conversely, as I read the current Commandant's 233'rd Birthday message referencing the death of the 244 Marines and corpsmen in Beirut, Lebanon in October 1983, I cannot find the rationale for moving the Marines comfortably ashore when they were obviously capable of strategic or tactical deployment from the security of the Mobile Seabase Concept which General Krulak had worked hard to assure.

This is an excellent book written by Gen Krulak. It gives an inside/personal look at Marine Corps history that many historians don't have access to. The main focus throughout the book is how the Marine Corps has dodged the "chopping block" many times prior and the authors point of view of why the USMC is so important to national security.

I read this book because I am a fan of David Rippe's writing, and I was told this would be a good book for me to read, because right now I am living an "upside down" life. I'm not much into reading self help books, which I thought this book was but I thought I would give it a try. I personally don't think this is a self help book. This is a book that doesn't tell you what you have to do to change your world, it is a book that gives you choices on how you can change your world. You can either to choose to live in a world where everything is chaotic and out of control. You can choose to continue to walk through life as a robot settling for what you have or have been given, or you can choose to change those things and live in a more harmonious life and making decisions...choices for yourself.

This book takes you through everything from your thinking, emotions, entertainment, the way we eat and the medications we take, politics, war, religion etc....In every chapter there are several interviews with well known celebrities, leaders, writers, investment advisors, doctor's and so forth. Also you are given those choices you can make to live in an up-right world.

After reading this book I have chosen to flip my life around and live in an up-right world and will take what I have learned from the book to make that happen. It might not happen over night but it will happen. I definitely recommend this book to anyone living in and upside down world. You will not regret it. In fact you will want to thank both David Rippe and Jared Rosen for helping to change your life.

Like a friend who says, "Let's go for a walk," this engaging book persuades with a conversational ease, inviting you to walk through gardens you think you know so well. You are given simple facts and numbers, without any strident rhetoric. And you are startled by the leaves and petals you just now really see, in such clear light.

THE FLIP persuades because it resonates with what you know deep within to be true, but unrealized because you think them distant, perhaps irrelevant.

Before you know it, you have traversed from your little room, explored issues such as the sustainability of our world, and returned to face the metaphysical questions of your life and values- and all these, while on an easy stroll with a new friend.

As you move from garden to garden, THE FLIP stops at bridges where you meet fascinating people who tell you of their choices. The book has a spare, consistent chapter layout, giving you a web link to explore the topic yourself, and offering a quick list of practical actions.

"Forgotten" has got to be the best so far in the entire Jennie McGrady series. I first started reading these when I was 11 I am now 19 and although this may be a little old to be reading them I think they are a great series especially considering the disgusting rubbish that is around these days for teenagers. The books are a good clean exciting christian read. "Forgotten" had that extra element of excitement and interest for me the idea of making Jennie lose her memory was a really good idea and kept u on the edge of your seat. It also gave me an insight into what it must be like to lose your memory especially when she was trying to remember her family. I really hope that Patricia continues this series. An excellent read!!!!

Great book!

I really loved this book! The more you read into it, the less you can put it down! It takes twists and turns in the plot that you would never expect, and holds your attention the whole time. I read it in less than 24 hours! I loved the way that the mystery started out as something sort of small, and then built right up to the climax. It's a MUST READ!!!

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT......

I have been reading the Jennie McGrady series since I was 12. Along with the Helen Bradley also. I find both series very interesting. Patricia Rushford writes beautifully. I only wish I had her talent. Not too long ago I got to meet her personally. She visited me and my family to come talk to my school about being an author. Along with writing books. She is a wonderful bubbly person who has an excentric personality and energy to do anything. I found that she is a lot like her characters. The first book I ever read was #3. It was addicting. I had to start from the beginning. So I did I have now read every one except for her latest McGrady book. I know that I will also enjoy this one as well. So please read her facinating books. All of the series!

Best mystery of them all!

This book is one of the best books in the series. It is a frightning but also entertaining book. A great read. I recomend that no one under about 8 or 7 years old should read this. I am 9 years old, and it was a tiny bit scary in some parts like when.. oh I probably shouldn't tell you if you're going to read it, and those of you who aren't, well you'll have to find out for yourselves! Enjoy!!

Captivatingly Dangerous

I found an electronic copy of Formosa Betrayed on the internet ... and read it through the wee hours of night, after putting my kids to bed, for four days until I finished the book. It is captivating and masterfully written; the truth told with authority by a former American vice consular to Taiwan who was there to witness the atrocities of the Chiang Kai Shek regime right after WWII. I felt a sense of relief after reading this book for some reason. Telling and documenting the truth about the "Taiwan experience" post-WWII is dangerous, but had to be done by someone who was raised up for just that task. Thanks Mr. Kerr for being there and for writing this piece of Taiwan's history confirming Taiwan's status as separate from China. From now on I'll sleep soundly as a Taiwanese American knowing that the truth has been revealed and any one can read it, if they dare.

Is it true that the copy right of this book is owned by KMT?

I saw the content on the WEB. Is it true that KMT owned the copy right of this book after it was published and it is never printed since the first edition? My parents would not get me in trouble by talking about the "228" incident.

KMT has a lot of ways to suppress people's political functions. I remember that I need to submit a Letter of Assurance from the third party prior to get into the university admittance. The letter stated he or she guarantee my loyal to the "Country" and I do not participate the Chinese Communist. Otherwise he or she will be punished the same degree as me. Can you believe it? It was in 1968.

I remember my classmates disappeared before a city mayor election. The anti-KMT candidate was elected. These pro-anti-KMT candidate classmates never come back. Ten years later this anti-KMT candidate joined KMT and be nominated as the mayor of Kaohsiung. At that time KMT change the rule so that they can appointed the mayor without election.

I hope Mr. Kerr's book can be printed again one day.

This book tells the truth and what really happened in Taiwan when KMT occupied Taiwan. It helps not only all Taiwanese but also people around the world to realize how Taiwanese have been suffering from KMT's dictatorship. Unfortunately, KMT still exists in this country. I very much hope that this book will be printed again so that it can be available to everyone who wants to understand the true history of Taiwan.

fin de siecle historiography--but a good one!

Am not too crazy with the paternalistic tone of the writing--an intimation of "whiteman's burden" almost. But aside from this seemingly carping criticism, Lt. Kerr is an excellent chronicler of the lamentable saga which we Taiwanese have come to know as the "228 Incident."

A sad, bitter and bloodly truth....that had been hinden for 45 years

As a 1978 born young Taiwanese.....I never know the bloody incident of 228. As I recall my childhood memory I always heard my grandpop discuss this events quitely with his close friend. However..every time when I try to enter his room to listen their discussion, my grandpop always told me"such discussion is too dangerous for you". I never understand why my grandpop forbided me to listen their discussion...After I finished this book I understand my grandpop's pain and anguish.
