This is one of three books written by Aline Griffith Romanos about her adventures as a undercover spy during WW II in Spain. It is excellent! I first read the book 25 years ago, have read them all more than once, recommended all three books to many, and have heard only high praise for the series. They are fun, well written, and real page turners!

I have purchased 4 books by Aline Romanos. I absolutely love them. The fact that there is truth behind the story and that she really was an upper-class lady as well as a spy excites me. I find myself wishing I lived an adventurous life. She has a talent when it comes to recreating her life and exploits. I could not put it down!

I can only echo the words of the previous reviewers! Countess Aline's books (...Wore Red, ...Went Dancing - so far!) are compelling, and I was truly absorbed from beginning to end! When I finished the first, I couldn't wait to start the second - and now I'm impatient to get the third - "...Wore Silk" - from my sister! I had to keep reminding myself that she would NOT be killed, as she was alive to write these books! And her ability to manage the pertepual romantic current with no "smut" is impressive! Her description of "masculine hands," the brush of lips on her ear, or the mention of leg-to-leg contact during the tango says it all! But beyond that, she teaches so much about Spanish customs and culture, from the attraction of bull fighting to how on earth they manage the high combs and mantillas, to daily routine, meal times, siesta - she never stops. How can this remarkable strong female hero be of the same generation as my mother?

An Amazing Mystery - And it Really Happened!

My mom first gave me this book to read back when I was in high school. I recently picked it up again at the library to take with me on vacation - and was once again drawn into this amazing - and real life - mystery. In fact, I enjoyed the book so much I almost didn't want to leave my hotel room until I finished it (which didn't make my brothers too happy)! Aline weaves mystery and international intrigue with a jet-setting lifestyle as she hob-nobs with the likes of Liz Taylor and Audrey Hepburn while trying to solve a mystery that's haunted her for 20 years! I'm just starting her next book, "The Spy Wore Silk" and reccommend that anyone who loves a good mystery (and don't we all?) should check out Aline's books. They're absolutely addictive, and, in this case, that's a good thing.

These stories give you access into the hearts and souls of real people who have been dealt devastating blows but found the strength to overcome. Every hospital chaplain, midwife and obstetrician should have copies of this book on hand to distribute as needed. If you have suffered the loss of a child or if you think you may ever find yourself in the position to comfort someone through their loss, this book is definitely for you. I tip my hat to the brave writers who shared their stories in a much needed effort to heal and encourage others!

After reading this book I felt joy, hope, contentment, and uplifted. I felt as though so many others have gone through this and made it, I felt that I could make it through this as well. I just did not feel alone anymore. I knew that there were people out there that persevered through the storm of loss and truly saw the rainbow at the end of the tunnel. I recommend this book to anyone that has suffered a loss, or knows someone that has.

I'm only about 1/3 through, but I can tell that this is an awesome piece of work. I'm surprised not to see more feedback here.

Tanner does an excellent job of presenting the Confederate deatils of the early valley campaign. He gives an excellent quick history of the valley as far as original colonization, American Revolution tie-ins, etc. He also paints a good picture of the strategic importance of the valley. So far reading, I'm surprised that more action did not take place within the 2 mountain ranges that make this "valley."

Tanner covers every level of the campaigns from simple private, to captains, to regimental colonels, to brigadier generals, all the way up to division commanders and of course General Jackson. Detailed troop movements are given, yet I did not find myself lost in details. Maps are excellent and numerous.

Also, very important, is reference to other Eastern developments which caused the ebb and flow in the Valley. You get the details as to why certain troops found themselves headed in or out of the valley, especially for the Union side.

The writing is very clear, concise, and at times very poetic. I wouldn't say Tanner is another Catton or Foote, but he comes pretty darn close. Much better than a typical dry account of campaigns you usually see out there.

I've been doing a lot of reading on ACW lately. I wasn't quite sure whether to read this because there seemed to be so many other more important works out there. But I'm glad I'm reading it as Tanner does an excellent job of briging this often forgot and vital campaign to life.

Remember it is Jackson's brilliance in the campaign which delays McCellan from striking Richmond by causing panic in Washington and delaying troop concentrations, and more importantly, it is his superiority in the Valley which allows him to break loose and help kick off the 7 Days (although he was MIA in helping).

Any serious ACW student should read this book.

A Remarkable Book!

I have always been fascinated by the Valley Campaign, and surprised that nothing appeared to have been written specifically on the Campaign itself - at least nothing definitive.

I just knew Tanner's book was what I was looking for, just by the appearance of it. And in fact it is THE definitive account of the Shenandoah Campauign of 1862.

This is a remarkable campaign history. Never does Tanner's pacing seem off. He tells the reader precisely what he or she wishes to know. At proper moments he gives a literary touch to th writing; at other times he tells us what the soldiers were thinking; and at other times he tells amusing anecdotes.

THe sheer amount of research that must have gone into this book is phenomenal. Most books on civil war battles and campaigns tend to rely on accrued secondary evidence, and those pieces of primar evidence that are already widely known.

Tanner, on the other hand, has miraculously discoverd sources NEVER before seen. He is so thorough that the bibliographu and notes take up a seriously large portion of the book. And the information is important - a good deal of it clarifies points that have always been puzzling. For example, he proves that the famous Staunton maneuver, where Jackson seemed to deliberately leave the Valley on foot, only to return by train, was actually ad hoc, and probably not intended.
On the other hand, the new evidence regarding the march south from the Battle of Winchester really makes you feel sorry for the Valley soldiers - my feet really almost felt sore even reading about walking that fast, and going without sleep for so long.

Jackson himself comes across as a flawed genius, which he undoubtedly was. While he was a remarkable soldier, one must admit that there were certain aspects of his character that nearly defeated him on occasion; his almost continuous friction with his subordinates, his extreme strictness, his extreme inflexibility, his religious fervour, his inability to know when his soldiers were past breaking point.
Yet we also see Jackson's incredible energy, his strategic genius, his unerring instinct for what to do next.

Ultimately Tanner's book is about as definitive as a campaign book can get, and is highly recommended to anyone interested in the Civil War.

Excellent History of the 1862 Valley Campaign

Tanner has written an excellent summary of the Valley Campaign that established Jackson as a Civil War legend. He manages to describe the experiences of privates and officers who fought in the campaign. While the majority of the book focuses on the Southern side, Tanner is fair and objective in his description of the abilities of the main characters.

Before going into the campaign study, Tanner describes the early history and importance of the Shennandoah Valley and why the area was such an important objective during the Civil War. The maps were okay but could have been more detailed and numerous to enable the reader to better understand the campaign movements and locations.

I particularly appreciated Tanner's fair treatment of Jackson: while we Southerners tend to idolize Jackson, Tanner points out Jackson's most serious flaws: secrecy and inability to get along with subordinates. Indeed, both tendencies probably would have kept Jackson (had he survived the war) from attaining the status of Lee, Grant, Sherman, Thomas, and Johnston. Admittingly, I have read of Jackson's tendencies in several other books.

I highly recommend the book as the standard for a study of the 1862 Shennandoah Valley Campaign. Read and enjoy!

Thrilling, informative, the best

A well-written and thoroughly researched account of one of the most impressive military campaigns in history. Mr. Tanner's portrayal is an enjoyable read without the sappy hero worship yet with all the details that gave us the Stonewall legend. No one can doubt the genius of this unlikely military leader nor his place in military history. Few could compare to the Elder Jackson's pious and quiet humility in victory and genious of maneuver. The valley campaign is studied to this day as a model of the indirect approach and the importance of maneuverability. Mr. Tanner gives us the best account yet of that campaign to thrill and inform. Very highly recommended.

The book The Stowaway Solution is a fictional action adventure book. The main characters Aiden and Meg are fugitives trying to prove their innocence because they where framed by Frank Lindenauer. This book is adventurous and suspensful, easy reading, and many other books in the series follow its footsteps. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars and it would be great for anyone who has read the first three books or if you like adventurous and suspensful books. Everybody should be offered the chance to read one of these books because they are great and good for all ages.

I have always believed that hip hop, is America's only TRUE culture. Originated in the U.S., and flourishing all over the globe, hip-hop has become a subject of great interest over the last decade. This book gives much insight as to the origins of hip-hop with interviews and ideas from legends like Grandmaster Flash, Doug E. Fresh and LL Cool J. At the other end of the spectrum, some of hip-hops newer and most intriguing artists are covered from Method Man to Busta Rhymes and even including some of the hottest local and underground rap groups to show the evolution of hip-hop in America. You will see that this virtual encyclopedia of hip-hop facts and philosophy doesn't miss a beat, as you find yourself continuosly nodding your head in awe of the detailed content as you turn each page. Anyone who has a thirst to learn more about the thoughts of their favorite rap artist, or to better understand the culture, philosophy and art of hip-hop, should purchase this book.

Poet Ezra Pound once told literary critic Hugh Kenner that Kenner had an obligation to visit the great people of his time. In "Street Conscious Rap", H. Samy Alim takes this counsel to heart and hand, as he, with James G. Spady, records the words and ideas of hip-hop's innovators and creators. The resulting rarity--the makers of hip-hop speaking, without interpretation, of what they, themselves, think and do--is a resource for study and insight; a document with archival muscle; a testimony for all time.

The interviews in this book are so detailed and in-depth that it made me think differently about some hip hop artists and hip hop as a whole. For instance, Method Man, Common, and Xzibit provide some real insight into the creative processes and abilities involved in hip hop. And Grandmaster Flash provides a first-hand historical account that makes you feel like you were there when hip hop was just getting started. All of the artists tell such amazing stories about their lives and experiences that we don't really read about anywhere else. The book also shows how important hip hop is culturally, historically, and socially -- and the impact it's had on the world. If you're serious about hip hop, this is the book you need to get. It's off tha hook, y'all!

It also has lots of handy information that is grade specific so no matter where you go, you will have a reference and appropriate backup to refer to. I highly recommend it.

This book is the best resource out there, and is currently being used at the local university. I am an education major and my campus uses this edition as well. There are many helpful bulleted lists for quick reference while in the classroom. Several supply freebies are printed up just waiting to Xeroxed st your convenience. Still, the best features are it's ease of reading and application of little details that make all the difference. This is the kind of "practical magic" you don't receive from a formal education that makes all the difference come game time.

And may your journey as a substitute go well....

This book provides some real insights and valuable suggestions for how to approach substitute teaching. In fact, I have used the techniques outlined in the book to solve other problems with regards to public speaking and small group leadership.

Overall, I have found the book helpful, although I do have one very minor complaint...Although the book makes every effort to be clear in its presentation (using reminder icons etc.) The headings threw me off. Generally you expect Larger headings to be the main point with smaller headings explaining subpoints; however the headings in this book kind of blurred together using the same fonts, so I had to go back in the reading to determine what the over arching themes were for the chapter.

As I said, very minor complaint!!! Otherwise, I would say...Buy this book first! The others just reiterate the same points, and they don't do it with half the level of thoroughness.

Passionate, fact-filled and providing the reader of a feeling of actually being out in the eastern woodlands at 3am in the morning observing the coyotes. What a revealing, thorough and eye opening book Suburban Howls is. Jonathan Way writes for all of us............clear,insightful and revealing about how all of natures creatures including the top predators like man and the coyote have a role to play in the circle of life.

People kill for food.............so do the coyotes.........This makes neither man or coyote evil.............The age old predator and prey interaction that makes the prey species so lithe, agile and swift is directly connected to the intelligence, perseverance and problem solving of what is chasing it, be it man, coyote, wolf, cougar, bear, wolverine, marten, fisher or bobcat.

May Jon's book open peoples eyes to the need and the right for all of the suite of apex predators to once again take their rightful place in our backyards.............the Eastern forests, meadows, streams and rivers of the USA.--

Suburban Howls is written from the perspective of a research biologist who manages to reach out and capture the attention of the general reader interested in wildlife ecology. He gives vivid details (sometimes heart-wrenching) of his experiences tracking coyotes while educating with scientific detail on Canis latrans. Great pictures, informative appendices and the personal story of a researcher who obviously has a dedication to his study. Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to hear this author's story. If I had any misconceptions about coyotes before reading this book they are now replaced with an understanding and respect for this Canid who is simply trying to survive their environment just like the rest of us.

This book is awesome.

Wildlife Biologist Jonathan Way raises the clarion call for coyotes and leaves some indelible tracks behind in this wonderful and engaging book. My appreciation for canis latrans has doubled since delving into Suburban Howls. I enjoyed it immensely and will recommend it to anyone who is interested in wildlife, the politics of it and the sometimes tumultuous relationship that ensues when worlds collide. In its pages you will find a book that jogs comfortably between scientific research, autobiography and activism. Reading the book I was alternately saddened and elated by the loses and discoveries of Jonathan and his research team. Herein you will find power struggles, and tragic endings tempered by moments of revelation and jubilant vernal beginnings. The author's insightful documentation and intimate observations of these wonderful social creatures will go a long way in demystifying them and hopefully defang the imaginary danger that lurks in the minds of the ignorant. I look forward to a day when people will feel that these animals are not something to be maligned, needlessly destroyed and cast out to the margins of our world. Jonathan's tireless research and dedication to the subject is testament to his devotion to these ecologically important creatures and their proper management. Many a human could learn a lesson from their fealty and industriousness, not only theirs but Jon's as well.

Not easily pigeonholed into any particular genre this book will rest comfortably next to other noteworthy nature authors such as John Hay and Robert Finch. Perhaps the next time you hear a howl instead of raising your hairs let it peak your interest in the fascinating wild world just beyond your back door.

I enjoy the Mental Bank because from what I've experienced, it gives you the motivation to do the things you need to do. I watched "The Secret" and read about the Law of Attraction. But I could not get the motivation to do the things necessary to accomplish much of anything. But from some of the results (at least I think they were from the Mental Bank), the motivation factor is answered. I think it does give you that extra motivation.

This book outlines a system of personal improvement developed by dr. John Kappas, founder of the Hypnosis Motivation Institute. The late Dr. Kappas was a pioneer in creating a working model of suggestibility and hypnosis that works extremely well.

This particular system was refined over many years. It's not difficult to do, but it's not easy either. You have to work in your ledger for a few minutes every day. (By the way, do yourself a favor and order a couple of ledgers to go along with this book - The Mental Bank Ledger)

If you do this diligently you will start to notice many small changes in yoru life. Those small changes compund and snowball over time and become big changes. This isn't magic or mumbo-jumbo, it is behavioral science.

In his practice, Dr. Kappas recognized that many people fail to change or revert to old behaviors because homeostasis is an overpowering drive. We don't often venture out of our comfort zone. Worse yet is when we push out of teh comfort zone and slingshot back to old behaviors. The Mental Bank is a practice which is designed to create a small bit of momentum to expand the comfort zone, and create new behaviors. It overcomes homeostasis and allows the new desired behaviors to become your comfort zone.

You can make more mone, lose weight, whatever you want. Again, there is effort, it's about 5 minutes a day right before you go to sleep.

The timing is also important, because it will stimulate the problem solving mechanisms in the deram cycle. Have you ever woken up with the solution to a problem after "sleeping on it"? This is designed to take advantage of the brain's organizing activities during sleep.

I must admit, that I was skeptical about this book before I read it.But after having read it many times over and applying Mr. Kappas's techniques I must say that this book will truly change your life for the better if you follow his instructions in the book. Its true that almost all of our negative thoughts were learned win we were children though our subconscious mind, but now thanks to Mr. Kappas and the book
"Success is not an Accident" and "The Mental Bank Ledger" we can all change our lives greatly.

Thank you so much Mr. Kappas for the tools needed to turn my lifes direction in the right way!!

Note: Your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks.

Many decades ago, I wrote in the front of my paperback copy of this novel "A Great Story--very tender!"

Set in Florida in the early 1940s, this novel follows the adventures of Terry Calder, a schoolboy who is on the run truant officers. He roams the Everglades and meets an old man. McCree, who has lived outside the law for decades, teaches Terry much about life during the hot summer.

If you haven't read Richard Bradford's "Red Sky At Morning," I would highly recommend this coming-of-age novel (set in New Mexico in the 1940s).
Red Sky at Morning: A Novel (Perennial Classics)

I would also highly recommend the modern cowboy story "Golden Rod," by Herbert Harker
Goldenrod

These novels are a way of reliving our youth. Frank Lloyd Wright said something to the effect that: "Youth is a fact of birth, but being young is a state of mind."

I hope you liked my little review. I think long reviews are better after you read a novel. I don't like knowing too much before I read a story. Thanks

A delightful Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn type novel. Easy reading, suitable for age 13 and up, but very enjoyable for all ages. The characters are very lovable, and it is easy to identify with Terry, the mischevious 6-year-old, if you've ever been a kid and had his spirit.

Its been 13 years since I read this book (when I was 10), but I can still remember the empathic experience afforded by Richards' skillful writing. I remember the thrills of sneaking into a tomato warehouse to sample the sweetiest juciest tomatoes ever pilfered, and the exhilaration of running away once I'd been discovered. I remember the bond with an old man who needed the benefit of youth like I needed the benefit of wisdom. We were a great pair, and he taught me how to catch catfish in a most interesting way. I remember terrifying my teacher and being the best little hellion I could be, and I remember the responsibility I shouldered when I had to, when I crossed a point, on a raft, with a friend in peril, and the everglades my only obstacle to saving him...when I took a step closer to becoming a man. I am writing about this book because it was one of the most memorable of my youth, and because it still sometimes paints on the canvas of my dreams.

A delightful True-Fiction!

An amazing look at childhood from the perspective of an adult woman. Wish I'd known McCree and Terry when I was six!

Established writer and poet, G.C Rosenquist has penned his first poetry book, Super Elastic Traveling Sound Circus, which consists of fifty diverse and very metaphoric poems.
The book begins with a statement from the author on the meaning of the book and what motivated him to compose these poems.
"A poem, to me, is a novel condensed to its most important and essential elements...This is a raw open wound: do I want the reader to know this?"
Expressing a variety of emotions in his words, the poems are well written, insightful and very symbolic. Each poem conveys a message and I liked how Rosenquist wrote a small paragraph at the top of each poem, to add more meaning to its work.
On the whole, the book is a galactic journey, an open wound, a philosophical discourse, or maybe just a simple explanation of his life.
My favorite poems in the book are: Friendship Down, Kite, Coma, Circle and Old Man. There was a special meaning and wit to those poems and I was able to relate to the sentiments they communicate. Quotes:
Kite: "That for a kite to fly / It must be anchored to the ground"
Circle: "I went to the mountaintops / I found the truth up there / Didn't like what I was told / So I went back home again"
Old Man: "You see me through eyes that deny their age / With spider-leg fingers, paper-skin wrapped / Brown leaf bones and a weathered, velvet head / You're much stronger than I am"

One of the most Diverse writers!

GC Rosenquist has done it again!
Mr Rosenquist shows his diversity as a writer in this superb collection of short poems. He walks you thru virtually every emotion in this touching, funny, and heart warming selection. I highly recommend you jump on the Rosenquist bandwagon and check out his previous books; OPENING and CLOSING of the MOON, and EVERMORE especially! You will not be disappointed!

Written by accomplished novelist G. C Rosenquist, The Super Elastic Traveling Sound Circus is a poetry collection assembled from metaphors drawing on all five senses. Each brief, free-verse poem touches upon the common elements that bind humans together as surely as the uniqueness that sets individuals apart. From cosmic concepts such as string theory to painful yet disturbingly common incidents such as divorce to the mysterious beauty of a sea flower, each topic speaks to a different element of the mystery of life. "Circle": I was born in the ocean / I was one-celled once / I know where I came from / Where the hell am I right now? // I left it all behind / I crawled up into the mud / to be where my future lies / Be neath the beating sun
