The New Bible Dictionary is a great tool for any person trying to do entry level hermeneutics. It isn't terribly in-depth, but it provides a lot of great information. It is no doubt one of the first resources to start with in order to get a base of knowledge!

The New Bible Dictionary first appeared in 1962. It is one of many great books that was written, to a large degree, in Tyndale House, Cambridge. It has been updated several times to include new discoveries and to improve the already terrific original dictionary. The scholars who wrote the articles are some of the best-known, most-respected evangelical scholars today.

Highly recommended.

If you would like this book and 17 other helpful books, including the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, Sinclair Ferguson's New Dictionary of Theology, the New Bible Dictionary and the New Dictionary of Biblical Theology, also the Essential IVP Reference Collection CD ROM.

This book was a gift from a friend about a year ago. I use it all the time when reading the Bible and doing studies with friends. It has all the information you could ever want. Some very obscure topics are left untouched, but all of the major and minor topics are dealt with. It also includes maps, pictures, etc. Well worth the money.

Essential for anyone wanting to seriously study the Bible

The New Bible Dictionary is more like an encyclopaedia than simply a dictionary. The scholarship is first-rate and the book is an almost essential resource for those who are conducting more in-depth study of the Bible.

It contains a number of articles from a range of good Christian scholars on pretty much every person, place, book and other thing in the Bible. For example, when discussing a book of the Bible, the article would contain information about the author, the date of writing, some of the scholarly issues concerning that book and would give a broad overview of the purpose and theology of the book.

This book is an invaluable resource for both lay person and Ministers, and would be useful to anyone who is involved in writing Bible studies or talks on the Bible, or who is undertaking formal study of the Bible or who is simply serious about examining more closely what the Bible really says.

If you fit one of these categories, you should definitely buy this book.

Inspiring vignettes of innovative leaders

Review Date: 1999-06-15
Growth on a global stage is the only way to sustainable success. It is an enormous challenge to grow let alone accomplish it globally. This book provides tangible object lessons on how these leaders have done it. If first-hand learning is best, then these stories approximate that construct.

This is an engaging and usefull guide to a difficult act.

A Good Read!

Authors Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries and Elizabeth Florent-Treacy idealistically foresee a new era where visionary, innovative CEO's will lead a new type of employee. Through insightful interviews, they position Richard Branson of Virgin, Percy Barnevik of ABB and David Simon of British Petroleum as icons of the modern, improved CEO. Certainly, Branson and Simon seem to be valid role models and their leadership of European global companies presents interesting alternatives. Although it is not reflected in this 1999 book, today Barnevik's reputation is tarnished in the wake of a 2002 severance pay scandal and problems that BusinessWeek refers to as "the mess at ABB." For good or ill, this book will provoke you to ask if emphasizing a leader's charismatic ability to motivate distracts attention from critical core business issues. Despite their varied outcomes, these charismatic visionaries created family-like corporate cultures and inspired their employees. Thus, they demonstrated that the new economic era requires a new type of leader. Whether they together constitute a composite of that leader is another question. We recommend this solid book to management students and to upcoming executives.

Delivering shareholder value is not enough

Well written, easy to read. Hard acts to follow. You will get to know three successful business leaders. What are their background, childhood, education and career? What happened to their companies when they were leading them? Interviews with each one of them in which many questions are answered that you probably would have asked. The companies are large, global and successful. There is a lot to learn. It is not a cookbook. The authors make a useful summary but when you reflect about what the three persons have done there are not only many things they all did but also many things they did differently. I bought the book because it was listed under the heading "business ethics" in an Amazon search. The book is not directly about ethics. It is useful in that context as it shows that these three leaders through their actions demonstrate having moral convictions. Part of that conviction is to deliver shareholder value but also strong feelings of responsibility for the environment and social issues. Furthermore they have been able, with a lot of hard work, to impart this concept on all of the employees. All three believe that employees become much more motivated and loyal to the organisation when they feel that they are working towards goals in addition to shareholder value. One also becomes convinced that they do not set these wider goals as a public relations exercise or a clever way to motivate people to work harder. These leaders are totally sincere in what they say and what they do.

A great study of leadership and business philosophy

The book gives valuable insight into the way these three ground-breaking European leaders think about business, and how they successfully manage global organizations. The book clearly illustrate the different personal traits of the subjects (the builder, the transformer, and the integrator), and ecourages the reader to challange the pros and cons of the different philosophies. The book reads very much like a case study, and provides an excellent but basic overview over the global marketplace and on how to be able to draw on the ideas implemented by these great leaders.

A brillant leadership study.

A brillant leadership study from M.F.R. Kets de Vries and E. Florent-Treacy. The New Global Leaders is the success stories of three global leaders : " Richard Branson (founder and head of the Virgin Group), Percy Barnevik (mastermind behind the merger of ASEA and Brown Boveri to form ABB), and David Simon (former CEO of British Petroleum) all looked for ways to create a greater sense of purpose for their employees while putting in place the structure necessary for a global organization."

With case studies and interviews, this book has been built around the personal development of these world-class global leaders and the evolution of their companies.

As stated by Kets de Vries and Florent-Treacy," we first discuss the values that provide a foundation for excellence and a new psychological contract in vanguard companies such as Virgin, ABB, and BP and then show how these values can be translated into practice in any organization."

I highly recommend this brillant study.

A detailed and succesful study about ABB and Percy Barnevik see "ABB the Dancing Giant/K. Barham & C. Heimer".

This is a very good book for people who would like to learn nonlinear regression in deep. Comparing with Bates and Watts book, this book provides very clear nonlinear regression theories. For all statisticians who focus on nonlinear regression, they must have this book.

I recommend it to those who already have had an introductory course on the subject and need to go deeper into it.

In 2001 I reviewed for amazon the texts by Gallant and the one by Bates and Watts. This text was written by Seber and Wild, two accomplished statisticians and experienced authors. This volume is of the same high caliber as those texts and deserves mention. It is a longer text that overlaps on many topics with the other two books, deliberately neglects some areas that were well covered by Gallant (Gallant's book came out in 1987 and this one in 1989) and hits some topics not covered by either of the other two books.
Bootstrap methods are neglected probably because the value of the bootstrap for standard error estimation in nonlinear models was not yet appreciated in 1989.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide good introductory material similar to the other texts. Chapter 1 deals with the models (linear and nonlinear) and Chapter 2 provides the basic estimation techniques. In addition to the standard material on least squares, generalized least squares and maximum likelihood, the authors also cover quasi-likelihood, linear approximations, robust estimation and Bayesian methods. Box - Cox transformations and the issue of variance heterogeneity are also treated in Chapter 2.

As they remark in the preface, they avoid much of the econometric theory and asymptotic theory that is well covered in Gallant's book.

Chapter 3 deals with important practical issues including the convergence properties of the iterative procedures (important for nonlinear models but a non-issue in linear models), ill-conditioning and identifiability (important issues for both linear and nonlinear models).

Chapter 4 deals with curvature issues and covers much of the original work of Bates and Watts with many references to those authors. Oddly though, there is no mention of the Bates and Watts text. Both books were published by Wiley around the same time with Bates and Watts appearing in 1988 and Seber and Wild in 1989. Perhaps the Seber and Wild book went to the publisher before the Bates and Watts book came out (their preface has a May 1988 date).

Important and interesting topics covered in this book but not the others include models with time dependent errors, detailed treatment of growth models, compartmental models, multiphase and spline regresions and error-in-variables models. They also devote a whole chapter to software issues (very interesting and practical but probably mostly outdated).

Good for a graduate statistics course or for a research reference source. Has lots of material and references but lacks homework problems.

I am a Chemist Phd working in the oil refining industry and often use statistical tools to model plant process and laboratory data. this text is not for practical uses but is to be considered a very rigorous and in depht introduction to nonlinear regression theory. Even if quite long and detailed is still clear and not difficult to understand. if you have time to devote to the principles and not jump to solutions this is a very good advanced text

Though I only lived there two years, I've often yearned to go back to Carolina. This book made that yearning into a painful ache! How many cooking books do you read with the intensity of interest as a thrilling novel? I did this one. Warning: This is not a recipe book. Yes, of course it has recipes, from both eastern Carolina and western Carolina barbecue traditions, as well as some variations of both. But the stories and history of this book make it a treasure in my collection. This one is going into my library, far more worthy than to be consigned to the kitchen to collect dust under the microwave (a fate deservedly given to a certain book by Martha Stewart).

This book makes me more homesick than ever for my adopted home. If you have any glimmer of passion for Carolina style barbecue, you MUST get this book.

If you love barbecue, don't miss this book.

All native sons of the Tar Heel State, and those who wish they were, who love pork barbecue and always wondered about the history of that flavorful dish should check out "North Carolina Barbecue: Flavored by Time." Funny, insightful, and well-researched, author Bob Garner takes you first on a history lesson back to 17th Century Jamaica to the roots of barbecue, then covers the importance of barbecue to political and religious life in the state. His own life growing up is filled with barbecue-related stories, which he tells herein with wit and style. He also imparts two excellent barbecue recipes, one for pork shoulder, one for the "whole hog."

The last half of the book contains reviews of the state's better- and lesser-known barbecue establishments, and could serve as a good starting point for a state travel guide. Photographic coverage leaves something to be desired, varying from wonderful historic photos to those that are barely legible.

Although the book would likely appeal only to those readers from the South for whom barbecue in all its forms is a tradition, it is an excellent read nonetheless. The down side is that reading this book makes you hungry

E-I-E-I-O! Old McDonald Had a Farm brings to life the classic song through interactive, pop up cartoon pictures of a chugging tractor whose tires move, baaing sheep, clucking chicks, oinking pigs, and mooing cows who chew their cud and roll their eyes. Cony's use of pictures, which children can manipulate, adds zest to the experience of reading as children read (or sing along) to the tune of Old McDonald. It is a timeless song set apart by Cony's ingenious manipulation of the idea of a pop up children's book that will hold up to much use.

My 15 month old LOVES this book. I had never sung this song to her before we bought it but now it is a big favourite. She learned the words farmer and tractor from the book. She learned e-i-e-i-o. She loves the flaps, the pull tabs and the dials. However, she decapitated the three little pigs in the first few days and ripped the farmer right out of his tractor in another unattended moment with the book. I now give it to her only under supervision so I can protect its moving parts. I don't know at what age toddlers become less destructive. However, it seems like this book might be better for older toddlers, since the younger ones like mine will probably love it to pieces!

This book is a remarkable account of life in the trenches from a soldier (the author) who served in France from the beginning of the war in August 1914 to the Armistice. Never once was Richards wounded in all that time! He served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, which also numbered among its ranks Robert Graves and Siegfried Sassoon. Unlike Graves and Sasson, Richards did not become an officer. He was a Private throughout his years of service in France.

Richards saw action from the earliest clashes between British and German forces at Mons (Belgium) in August 1914, to Ypres, to Neuve Chapelle, the Somme, Passchendaele, and the decisive battles in the late summer and autumn of 1918.

It's without doubt the best memoir written by a common soldier since Mark Twain's "Private history of a campaign that failed". I had the paperback Ballantine Books edition in the 1960's but lost it. I've seen copies of this edition sold through amazon recently for over $100. Right now, it's not available here, but a new edition IS AVAILABLE,and can be ordered from Naval&militarypress.com in England, along with Richards other book "Old soldier sahib". Both are around 10 pounds each (about $18) excluding shipping. Reading Frank Richards personal memories of his life in the Royal Welch Fusiliers during WWI and earlier in Burma & India is a super treat. He was quite a character.

Frank Richards was a member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, from 1901 until the end of the war. He displays a natural ability for story telling, in this wonderful account of a regular old soldier. It is amazing to note that this story would probably never have been published if he had not known the famous writer Robert Graves, whom he had served under in the trenches, he even mentions Graves as well as another famous member of the Regiment: Siegfried Sassoon. He sent the whole rough draft to Graves in longhand, who then edited it and got it published, as he recognized what a true gem he had. It has been intimated that Robert Graves actually rewrote much of the text as we now see it, though it has never been proven. Though punctuated with grim moments of death and destruction, it is an uncomplaining account, a testament to Mr. Richard's indomitable spirit and pride for his regiment, though he wryly recounts that after the war he had trouble adapting to civilian life, providing a couple of well written examples. The number of times he narrowly escaped death or injury makes it unbelievable that he survived the entire war virtually unscathed. There are moments when men all around him would perish, or he would leave an area just as it was shelled. A must read for those with even the slightest interest in World War 1. This book flows smoothly and never jumps, a steady good read. We are fortunate that this book was published, as accounts of regular soldiers are few and far between, especially those of this caliber. He followed this account with a prequel entitled "Old Soldier Sahib" another excellent memoir. I highly recommend this book to all.

First class account by a man who served as a soldier and NCO throughout WW1 on the Western Front. Even more interesting as he served in the same infantry unit as Graves and Sassoon. An unvarnished account from the view of a long service professional soldier of some of the most momentous events of the war. A good counterpoint to some of the more tragic/romantic accounts of the war.

Ironic, perhaps unintentionally

I read Frank Richards story, apparently a chapter from this book, "The Third Battle of Ypres 1917" in the Mammoth Book of True War Stories (now in print) and you have to be impressed by the man's style--sort of like the naturalists (Steven Crane comes to mind), but also either intentionally or unintentionally ironic. A masterpiece of prose. Recommended.

This is an excellent and very comprehensive book. I used it primarily to learn about state estimation. I had already taken courses on estimation, but this book was superior to the texts we used in class. It addresses many practical issues that are left out in the other textbooks that I've seen. Issues like how to determine the discrete-time process noise covariance given continuous dynamics and continuous time process noise covariance are covered by Stengel.

Very good treatment of Kalman filter

Good book on nonlinear control for the budget conscious

"Fundamentals of Kalman Filtering" by Zarchan is a good book on the subject, but with a cost that exceeds one hundred dollars, this is a real stretch on the budget of college students who are just looking for some help. This book is a great one for people interested in nonlinear controls and the Kalman filter at a budget cost. The book introduces stochastic optimal control concepts for application to actual problems with sufficient theoretical background to justify their use, but not enough to get bogged down in the math. The book gives the reader with little background in control theory the tools to design practical control systems and the confidence to tackle more advanced literature - something that both the professional who is a little rusty and the student can appreciate. The reader should have mathematical maturity on the level of second year calculus.

The first chapter introduces the reader to the concept of optimal control. Chapter two provides a review of the mathematics of control and estimation. For the seasoned reader, you can proceed directly to chapter three with no real loss. Chapter 3 address optimal control of systems that may be nonlinear and time-varying but whose inputs and parameters are known. It illustrates how open-loop control policies generalize to closed-loop control laws when system dynamics are linear and the cost function is quadratic. Chapter 4 presents methods for estimating the dynamics states of a system that is driven by uncertain forces and is observed with random measurement error. Here is where the excellent discussion of the Kalman filter is located. Chapter 5 discusses the general problem of stochastic optimal control where optimal control depends on optimal estimation of feedback information. Chapter six focuses on linear time-invarient systems for which multivariable controllers can be based on linear-quadratic control laws with linear-Gaussian estimators.

The book's examples and problems are directed at confidence building, and thus most of them are rather simple and have the purpose of illustrating concepts, not getting bogged down in mathematics. There are also numerous worked out numerical examples, which is a welcome pleasure in such books that are often very theoretical. Highly recommended.

You can find stuff here you can find nowhere else.

This book has been less influential on me than some others but nontheless I use it to find information on material that is almost impossible to find elsewhere in any kind of reasonable time. A broad range of topics is covered, not just optimal control. This has been particularly useful in understanding some the actual designs I have been asked to analyze.

This book follows suit with most of the other write-on wipe-off with alcohol medical type pocket reference books. I love that they actually fit in my scrub pockets, and that they are waterproof! As far as information, this book is perfect for someone like me. I work in an ortho-office and I'm also in nursing school. It really has clarified some things for me. I also recommend RN notes, Med Surg Notes, OB Notes, and Assess Notes. They are all top notch, and I just listed them in order from my most-favorite to my least favorite. (Assess notes is good, RN notes is FABULOUS. Ortho Notes comes right after Med Surg Notes in my ranks!) :) Thanks for reading y'all!

I love this product. It is durable, and full of useful information. It follows what I am learning in my Ortho class. Very helpful, with great pictures. I plan on taking this when I go on my clinicals.

I happened across this book a year ago and can't believe how much I refer to this book. It is an excellent reference during exams and I find myself thumbing through it during down time. The pictures, quick easy exam tips, easy follow reading and layout are all just a few of the characteristics that I truly appreciate. I always am coming across something that is a wonderful review and or something that I was not aware of. I LOVE the differential diagnosis in each section. Another quality of this book is that the pages are sturdy and waterproof. I'm sure as often as I have carried this around with me over the past year, the pages would have been rather dog-eared if only of paper product.

Good reference book, especially if you are not an ortho person by nature. Wish the print was bigger

Dawn Gulick taught Ortho to my class and this book is the best. I only wish we had it at the begining of the class. Everything she taught us was included. It is a really good reference that actually fits in your pocket. I carry it with me at clinic as a reference. It is easy to use and just short of bullet proof. You can write in it and erase pen with an alcohol pad. I have spilled coffee on it without a scratch. My CI even found it useful because it jogged her momory on stuff she doesn't really use that often.

Very convincing information, not a light read

This is one of the most exhaustive collections of information and data regarding the JFK assassination and Lee Harvey. I do agree with one of the other reviewers - this is not light reading. It's pretty dry - just the facts, no "window dressing".

We always hear about the conspiracy theories, and speculation that the CIA played a role in the JFK assassination - this book sets out to provide convincing data. So if you're looking for an adventure novel or light reading, look elsewhere. But, if you're looking for an almost encylopedic source to quote when discussing such things, this is definitely the book.

I purchased Newman's book upon its publication in 1995 and over the years have re-read it at least 5 times and re-read passages even more often. Newman makes it very clear that his research wasn't aimed at the Kennedy assassination per se, but to reveal from the released archives of some of our clandistine agencies, that Lee Harvey or men named Lee Harvey Oswald were of great interest to the CIA, et al, long before our President was murdered. His research lets the reader draw conclusions, albeit very obvious conclusions. A hard read....but a great read.

As a intern for Dr. Newman on this particular book, I spent countless hours searching for documents in the National Archives - I know first hand the length he went to provide accurate details. Dr. Newman recounts the interesting story of a dark point in our nation's history. He is very careful not to speculate on the assassination of Kennedy - he deals only with the facts before him - CIA and FBI documents that display what they knew about Oswald. He leaves the rest to the 'assassination buffs'

5 stars for content, 2 stars for style

While Dr. John Newman is to be commended for the SUBSTANCE of this book, he is no writer---this is a real challenging book to get through, rivaling some of Harold Weisberg's books. For the RESEARCHER out there, highly recommended, so much so that anything less than 5 stars is heresy. For those who want a good "read", avoid like the plague! I know this seems like a contradiction, but it isn't (!)

Oswald and CIA: was there a connection? Author thinks so.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1996-05-12
This is an important book in the Kennedy assassination genre. It contains the text of CIA documents not previouslypublished, attempting to establish a CIA connection withLee Harvey Oswald and subsequent efforts on the part of the CIA to conceal this connection through tampering with itsOswald files. The book is flawed by poor editing, andfrom time to time the author makes great leaps in his logic, but for all that, it is well worth the time spent reading. The book breaks off after Oswald's death. One can onlyhope that Mr. Newman writes another volume addressing post-assassination events, including the controversy surroundingthe bona fides of KGB defector Yuriy Nosenko and his claimto have been the KGB officer supervising the Oswald file inRussia
