I found this book yesterday in my search for a 'spiritual' book for my 13 year old female cousin. I started to read it to see if it was appropriate for her and ended up reading the whole story in less than two hours. It is beautiful- my thoughts are with it today. An adult wanting a short story...get it, also it could be read outloud to a small child, it is basically an animal story. Any reader of any age would enjoy its inspiring simplicity. Hint: The powerful Falcon becomes conscious of its predatory nature and chooses not to kill. Humanity's same struggles of right and wrong begin to stir in a Falcon's thoughts.

A BEAUTIFUL ALLEGORY

This is truly a lovely allegory. Kara, the central character in this story is a large, powerful falcon. He is a predator by nature, devouring smaller creatures. During one attack, he swoops down on a dove. The dove begs for her life and when Kara looks into her eyes and sees her fear, he relents and releases her. From then on, Kara changes his priorities. He learns to eat berries and vegetables because he can no longer bring himself to kill another living creature. The gentle dove in turn, welcomes Kara into the woodland creatures' community where they bond and welcome even more animals of all species.

Kara is a symbol for St. Paul, the former Saul known for his persecution of Christians. The gentle dove is a symbol of the Angel who appeared to Paul and who helped him rethink his priorities and become a Christian. (The dove, long recognized as the symbol of peace is often referred to in Scripture). The woodland creatures could be the Disciples or as a Christian community of caring. The end of the book reinforces the Christian theme beautifully by describing Kara's ultimate sacrifice -- he eats Manna (communion, perhaps) and takes a swan song (falcon song) flight into the sun. At the end of his life, he is transformed into a myriad of beautiful colors that his woodland friends know as being him. It is one of best books in Christian literature. It is a heart warmer. Please read it. It will really touch your heart.

Kara, the Lonely Falcon is among the earliest writings of Joseph Girzone. This charming allegory parallels common Christian themes including mercy, sacrifice, and friendship. While it is written for young adults, it can be enjoyed by all ages.

Kara, who is a bird of prey, makes a decision. He no longer wants to use other animals for food. This comes as a shock to the other creatures of the forest. Many creatures are not convinced of the change in Kara until he protects the creatures from other birds of prey. An alliance is formed between Kara the falcon and the creatures of the forest. A conflict arises when Kara must find a new source of food. While he can eat berries during the warm season, the winter months are more problematic. The food donations of the forest creatures are not enough to maintain the large falcon. A mysterious food that resembles a flat mushroom appears near Kara's perch. This food gives Kara warm feelings which makes him want to share the food with his friends. Kara is never able to share the food with his friends because of the day in which he mysteriously disappears. However, the creatures do discover the mysterious food.

For animal lovers and fans of Christian fiction, this is a wonderful book. I can envision myself using this book as a gift for young nieces and nephews in the future.

Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the pulga in all of the pages.

The language is simple and repeptitive, making this a great book to teach Spanish in Elementary and Middle grades. Illustrations are great. It's also a good book for native speakers practicing reading. I use it as a check-out book for English as a Second Language students, to motivate literacy acquisition.

We love searching for the mouse and the flea and seeing the movement of the characters before they end up on the bed or off of it. The colors and the change from night to day are so smooth you almost dont notice it.

Most horse books are designed for children, and that's exactly who enjoys them. But Lady's Big Surprise is enjoyable for anyone of any age. You don't even have to be a horse person to understand it; Dawson explains all the horse terms she uses and even has an informative glossary at the back. This book is a great read, and I myself learned a lot of horse sense from reading it!

I sent this book to my neice as a Christmas present. She isn't one to like reading but she finished this book and re-read it several times. After I read it, I understood why. The author created believable characters and situations that children AND adults can identify with. There's a terrific glossary of terms in the back of the book for people who have never been on a horse. Can't wait for the rest of the series.

It progresses rapidly and is a MUST READ for all railroad fans, law enforcement or just about anyone who loves a great story. There is some railroad lingo that the railroaders will enjoy but it is not written above anyones knowledge level. You will feel the laughter, tears and anger as you enjoy the story. You will also appreciate the fact that the book is written by an actual Railroad Special Agent who can relate his personal life experiences into the story. Don't miss the train!! I was impressed at how this book introduces the whole ecommerce concept in language that won't make beginners cringe, and at the same time it contains enough advanced concepts to keep more established business owners interested. I really like how this book goes into detail about the steps of setting up an online store because I know a lot of people who are afraid to try things out on the web with no prior experience. The book gives many examples so concepts like templates and inventory control won't confuse fledgling entrepreneurs. The authors seem to know quite a bit about the how people use the Internet, and I can appreciate that type of sensibility as a web developer.

I recommend this book to those who want to get their feet wet in the rapidly growing ecommerce industry, and for those who already have businesses on the web... this makes for a solid reference manual. For those who currently run a Yahoo! store, there are dozens of things in the book which will help you grow your business. In fact it introduces a LOT of marketing concepts that many people dont know about when selling merchandise online.

That Summer in Paris by Morley Callaghan is another version of Hemingway in Paris which is probably a lot closer to the truth.

If you need or want to know the truth, read this book. Hemingway sure made a seductive myth about himself. We don't fault him for improving on the truth. The Hemingway version is fun to read but this one is fun too.

By the way, Callaghan wrote an outstanding short story called "Luke Baldwin's Vow." You can see why Hemingway thought highly of him.

*the* must-read literary memoir of Paris in the 1920s
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-21
Canadian writer Morley Callaghan (1903-1990) published 16 novels and more than 100 works of short fiction, and he was one of the first Canadian authors to make his living solely from his craft. Callaghan believed in capturing the bare truth and honest emotional content of people's lives, so his prose shuns stylistic busyness. Edmund Wilson called him "the most unjustly neglected novelist in the English-speaking world," and Maxwell Perkins called him the world's best short story writer.

THAT SUMMER IN PARIS, as a memoir of Paris in the 20s, is every bit as engaging a book, if more limited in scope, as Hemingway's A MOVEABLE FEAST. The book begins with Callaghan's inspiring story of meeting Hemingway while working on the same paper in Toronto--at the time Callaghan was in his early 20s (still in college), and Hemingway was a couple years older. Hemingway had temporarily left Paris and was in town working for the paper to provide his wife Hadley with the benefits of Toronto hospitals during childbirth. Hemingway quickly became a sort of literary patron for Callaghan and, when he returned to Europe, took Callaghan's short stories with him and passed them around Paris. Fitzgerald became enthusiastic about Callaghan's work and also began championing him with Paris and New York publishers. After Callaghan published 2 books of fiction (in no small part due to the help of his "Paris friends"), Callaghan finally made his own visit, with his wife, to Paris in 1929. The anecdotes he recounts are simply marvelous, and I can't recommend the book highly enough. Boxing matches with Hemingway, Fitzgerald's drunken histrionics, a strange evening with Joyce and a phonograph... it's priceless stuff.

Timing is everything

Review Date: 2000-05-24
They say that timing is everything and the fact that this particular writer just happened to be sitting on the Boulevard Montparnasse on the right evening of the right year, means we have a further insight into the lives of those Paris expatriates, Hemingway and Fitzgerald and others. At the same time, this may be an opportunity for some people to discover Morley Callaghan, who is a very fine writer in his own right. His life ran parallel to Hemingway's for some time, as they met in Toronto and later in Paris and remained friends thereafter, even if they saw each other only rarely. In a sense, he is just the person to give us a penetrating look behind the legends that were being created in the cafés and bars of the ville lumière at the end of the thirties. This is a delightful book as well; Callaghan is nobody's fool, which means he's not writing for the mundane reasons that might otherwise be expected, and you can trust him. He is painting a portrait of a world teetering on the very brink (it is the summer of 1929), and in his own artful way, he has succeeded in giving us a rare glimpse into the ill-lit streets and nightclubs just before it all fades away into the decade of hopelessness that followed. It's well worth finding this book if you can - it's a little gem.

RULED BY HIS GUN...
When Moses "Moss" Tucker smelled dager he shot it, when he needed shelter he grabbed it -- and when he wanted a woman's touch he bought it. Then he saw Amanda Boone's sparkling azure eyes and the tough, steely outlaw couldn't get her out of his mind. An innocent beauty like her would never get involved with a lawbreaking man like him. But the thought of never tasting her luscious lips or hearing her cries of ecstasy pierced him more sharply than a bullet from his double-barreled gun!

LED BY HER HEART...
Chestnut-haired Amanda tried to keep her gaze on the vast frontier that flasjed past her train window -- but it kept straying to the buckskin-clad stranger opposite her. Every inch of him was virile and strong . . . and every part of her yearned for his passionate caress. She knew it was wrong to even think of his muscular arms crushing her soft curves in a fierce embrace. Yet she vowed that before the trip was through he would be the one to tame her savage desire with his wild LAWLESS LOVE!

I HAVE READ RB BOOKS FOR YEARS AND TRULY LOVE MOST OF THEM. THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN 1985...NOT A SEASONED WRITER..BUT HER TALENT WAS OBVIOUS. THE PLOT WAS UNIQUE. THE CHARACTERS VERY DIFFERENT BUT VERY INTRIGUING. IT WAS A 'CAN'T PUT IT DOWN'.....OUR HEROINE IS RAISED IN AN ORPHANGE, HEADSING WEST TO TEACH IN A MISSION SCH BEFORE BECOMING A NUN. THIS SHY, NAIVE, SCARED OF HER OWN SHADOW HAS NOTHING BUT AN MOUNTAIN OF FAITH. ON HER JOURNEY, MOSS TUCKERS ..THE BIG BAD COWBOY WITH AN UGLY PAST..BECOMES VERY PROTECTIVE OF HER AND PROMISES TO SEE HER SAFELY WEST. WELL, THERE ARE BAD GUYS, BAD WOMEN, INDIANS, KIDNAPPYING, TEARS, LAUGHTER AND 'TRUE GRIT' BY OUR JOHN WAYNE HERO CHARACTERS. IT'S A REAL WESTERN AND I LOVED IT AND WOUND UP LOVING ALL THE BIG BAD GUYS WHO CRIED OVER MANDY'S RESCUE AND THE LOVE SHE AND MOSS SHARED. NOT MUCH SEX..NOT MUCH BAD LANGUAGE. SOME VIOLENCE, INCL RAPE (APPROPRIATE TO THE STORY CONTENT)...AND HOW MANDY CONQUERS THE BAD THING SHE ENCOUNTERS THRU HER UNSHAKEABLE FAITH. (ALTHOUTH THIS WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A RELIGIOUS BOOK IN AND OF ITSELF.) EVERYTHING IS JUST IN THE RIGHT PROPORTION TO MAKE THIS A KEEPER. I DIDN'T PUT IT AWAY SINCE MY SECOND READ WILL BE SOON. ENJOY. IT'S WORTH FINDING. WOULD HAVE LIKED TO GIVE IT A 6******.

To me the characters in this book were very strong. I really dug how the heroine grew to be so strong. Has for Moss well the guy has a not to shiny past but his heart is in the right place and his imperfections seem to just add more character to him. There were some pretty ugly scenes but that just made them stronger characters all in all I'd recommend this for someone who likes western historical's, but if it's the glitter and style of a regency ballroom then this is definately not your read :-) Next on my F.Rosanne Bittner list is Comanche Sunset hope it's as memorable as Lawless Love.

In 1969, my grandparents received Leaves of Gold for their 50th wedding anniversary. I was 5 years old. When I was about 8 years old, every time I would go to my grandparents home, I would read this book. My older sister ended up with this book after my grandfather died, and I looked for years to find one like it. I found it on amazon and ordered it. It was just like the one that they had. My little sister never knew my grandparents, so I ordered a copy of this book for her birthday so she
can have a part of their history. I am going to write up a story about why I wanted this book. A friend of mine, who is no longer with us, gave me a book that was similar to this that someone gave her in 1943. She was ninety years old when she gave me this book at church one day because she knew I would appreciate this. It is in a fire safe under lock and key. Highly recommend this book.

This textbook is required for an online class I am taking, but it is so well put together and interesting that I would recommend it to anyone interested in a business law crash course!

This book was one of the best Business Law books I have ever read. The authors write the book that makes Business Law easy to understand. It is very well written and once you start reading it, it is hard to stop. I highly recommend this for any Business Law Course or if you want to skim the surface of the subject, then this book is the proper gradient.

Interesting...for a textbook

This was an interesting textbook. I almost decided to keep it for future reference. Some of the material did not go into the depth I would have preferred, but it was still a really good read for a textbook.

Actually Enjoyed Reading This One

This text was actually enjoyable to read most of the time. There is a lot of good information, and the presentation makes it easy to digest. It is still a text, and there is a lot of information. Still, when compared to most textbooks, this is among the best for both coverage of the material and ease of reading.

I saw an advertisement for this book in the Playbill for "Mary Poppins" on Broadway when I was last in New York. A group of us had been kicking around the idea of formalizing our little theatre productions which we had been putting on sporadically for several years, so I ordered this book.

It's a great little reference on starting and maintaining a community theatre. It has sections on play selections, incorporation, rehearsal schedules, finances, advertising, and most other topics which arose as we discussed our next production and incorporating our little group. Even though it's written by a five-time (!) Tony-award winner, it's not written just for big cities or groups with big budgets. We have a miniscule budget in a rural community and it spoke right to us.

I highly recommend it. (I also recommend seeing a Disney show if you happen to be in New York any time soon. Wow!)

How informative can a big, Broadway producer really be? How much does he know about the real world and shoestring budgets? A LOT! Mr. Lane covers theatre from so many angles he has obviously lived it at several different levels.
It is very well written, humorous and it's playwriting section was my favorite. The list of resources, in itself, is worth the price.
My main interest is developing new musicals and this book has proved to be inspirational.
This volume has more than exceeded expectations and has me applying to the "Old Farts Rep Co." as we speak!

It's a top pick
