Words from THE names in movie sound.

If you're intersted in movie sound, this one is a gem. LoBrutto interviews the people who made some of the greatest impacts in film sound in the last 25 years. We're not just talking about legends like Ben Burtt and Walter Murch (Star Wars & Apocalypse Now, respectively) but the whole gauntlet of roles that make up what we hear at the movies. Production sound mixers, ADR (looping) editors, Foley artists, supervision sound editors, sound designer, boom mikers, music editors. You get conversations with top names in every field. I learned a great deal about what goes into making the overlooked half of what makes a great movie.

Fascinating interviews with sound specialists!

If you have the slightest curiosity, buy the book! This is an engrossing book of interviews with experts in film sound. LoBrutto doesn't just limit himself to sound editors (though you should buy the book for his interview of Walter Murch alone!) but also interviews production sound mixers, ADR and foley mixers, and creators of film sound systems. I work in film post production, and though I don't have a lot of knowledge of the sound editing, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. LoBrutto references many films in his interviews and the reader will find an abundance of delightful anecdotes. Well worth it, for those who know film and those who don't.

Three weeks before Sue Ross, the author's, untimely death in 1996 from cancer she received her doctorate in Fine Art for her thesis and signed a contract with Oxford Books to publish "This is My World" a book about the life and work of South African artist Helen Martins. The book was published a year later after her death. The photographs in "This is My World" are stunning and the book is an illuminating study of Martin's life story. Martins created a fantasy world of sculpture and light (known as Outsider Art) in her Karoo village home, named "The Owl House," in South Africa. In 1976, when her house and garden were filled with more than 200 camels, owls, peacocks, Buddha's, Bushman and Biblical scenes, she seemed to feel her life's purpose was complete and committed suicide. After her death she became a nationally acclaimed artist and her home was proclaimed a national monument and museum. "This is My World" is both inspiring and heart wrenching. It is not only a tribute to Helen Martin's work but to the life and work of Susan Imrie Ross as well. I'm proud that Helen Martin's is my great Aunt!

Truly a Revelation...

Dale Presley's book is truly the most comprehensive, revealing writing on the Scriptural book of Revelation.

Additionally, the author does a masterful job of laying the groundwork to understanding in the book's introduction and lengthy preface.

This book is a 'must read' for all denominations under the umbrella of Christianity, including 'birth' Catholics such as I.

Dale Presely's book is directly responsible for me being re-Baptized (baby-baptized as a Catholic at two weeks of age) to that of a "Believer" Baptism at the age of 56 in Dale's Bevel Oaks Baptist Church in Sour Lake Texas in February of of '98.

Mr. Presley was also a key inspiration behind my authoring of the book, "TRUTH TO POWER: The Pope Has No Clothes".

Without a doubt, this book will make a clear difference in the reader's spiritual life.

Most Literal Interpretation of Revelation/WHOLE Bible
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-18
This verse-by-verse commentary on the entire book of Revelation is the most factual ever written from the most literal interpretation of all scripture. The book is especially valuable because it begins with an introduction and four chapters on theology that explain Who Jesus Christ is in all of His fullness, what scripture says about the timing of Christ's return, how predestination and free will co-exist, what God's views of mankind are in regard to His judgment of all who ever live based upon the true meaning of the tabernacle's symbology, and how every person's spiritual journey through life can be modeled to better understand it. A scripture-inidexed chronology chart of the 7-year Tribulation is included that identifies the timing that is referred to by every verse of the book of Revelation in relation to those seven, fast-approaching years. Contents of the book are fully referenced to scriptures that are all contained in a 30+ page scripture index. If you do not literally beleive that the sixty-six books of the Bible contain God's only words to mankind, don't waste your time looking at my book. But if you do, and you are tired of fictitious end-time novels and movies, you owe it to yourself to find out the truth revealed in this book. Virtually all Jews haven't a clue how God has worked with, and is still working with, and will always work with descendents of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, including the 144,000, to yet use them to fulfill His purposes for all of mankind. However, "Way Truth:Life" explains this from the most literal interpretation of scripture in theology chapters T-3 and T-4 and in commentary on Revelation 7:1-8 and 14:1-5.

Cynthia Winton-Henry and Phil Porter, the creators of InterPlay, and "body intellectuals" from Oakland have done amazing work for 25 years in formulating a set of principles and philosophies to support people in integrating body, mind, and spirit with EASE! This book contains the beautiful "Like Breathing" CD, and the stories from dozens of people sharing the many ways that the forms of InterPlay are being used in 40 cities and many countries to create grace-full, diverse and mutually supportive communities. I've been using InterPlay to build community in Nashville and doing a leadership training program here for 3 years. Our motto is "Life Doesn't Hafta Be So Hard!" Using the InterPlay practices of simple story, voice and movement activities as described in the book, we have discovered community, connection, artfulness and joy. This book is an "Artists Way" for discovering your creativity and your capacity to connect with others as you create dance, stories and songs out of the issues that come out up in your life! This book will help you exform and inform yourself and gain insights and tools for accessing your creativity, releasing fear & stress and living with more ease & spontaneity.
Also, I know the authors and dozens of the InterPlay practitioners personally, and they are all GREAT people! You can learn more about the whole system they have developed by seeing their website. If you know in your body that there is a relationship between art, spirit, creativity and personal/political change, then this is a "cookbook" of ideas and practices that will support you in changing yourself and changing the world!!

Stories of failure and success, victories and defeats

Review Date: 2005-03-09
The collaborative work of academicians Terrence E. Deal (former Irving R. Melbo Scholar, Rossier School of Education, University of Southern California) and Guilbert C. Hentschke (Cooper Chair in Education, Rossier School of Education, University of Southern California), Adventures Of Charter School Creators: Leading From The Ground Up is a seminal work in the areas of comparative education, educational reform, and academic leadership. The subjects are individual educational entrepreneurs who created charter school from scratch. Here are stories of failure and success, victories and defeats. Included are "education amateurs" such as an Episcopal priest working in the Pico-Union community of Las Angles; a corporate attorney in Miami; a manpower training specialist in East Saint Louis; the chief financial officer of a major African American church in New York City; and a retired military officer in North Carolina. There are also represented a number of experienced school teachers and school administrators as well. Arising from these stories are examinations of relevant issues the impact of entrepreneurial leadership upon school leadership, the differences between leadership in autonomous start-up charters and relatively dependent traditional schools, and what distinguishes charter school leadership from that more typically associated with traditional school leadership. Adventures Of Charter School Creators: Leading From The Group Up is an impressive work of considered scholarship and a highly recommended contribution to the on-going national dialogue over the advantages and disadvantages of charter schools within private and public education reform movements.

Masterful Insights Into The Spiritual Exercises

Review Date: 2001-04-30
Barry is a very well known, highly respected and extremely experienced spiritual director, retreat director, and psychologist who writes this text out of that wealth of theoretical knowledge and pastoral experience for spiritual directors and primarily for directors of Ignatian retreats. The title affirms a faith that God deals directly with souls and the director's task is merely to facilitate that relationship, assisting retreatants to clarify their desires, be open to God's self-revelation, and understand their unique role in the divine plan using imaginative prayer, feeling, discernment and previous touchstone religious experience. These themes and more are developed in this masterful text that would be profitable not just to spiritual directors but to anyone whose spirituality is Ignatian or based in the Spiritual Exercises.

This is another good book on my hero Mr. William C. Durant the creator of GM. Mr. Durant defiantly affected the early automobile history more than any other one man ever. He was the worlds largest cart maker back in Flint Mi. & went on to save Buick from certain bankruptcy. Also creating GM with Buick as the cornerstone car & then adding Olds, Cadillac & Oakland (the forerunner to Pontiac) & many others that didn't pan out. He also started Chevrolet with his famous Buick race car driver Louis Chevrolet. Some other good reads are The Dream Maker 1979 by Bernard Weisberger and The Deal Maker by Axel Madsen 1999. Also some other really interesting info is the Durant website. Sincerely Lance Haynes President Durant Motors Automobile Club

Fresh Perspectives on a Complicated Subject
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-26
This is an absolutely first-rate collection of 20 separate but inter-related essays in which their authors explain how and why brands are "the new wealth creators." They were edited by Hart and Murphy who co-authored a brief Foreword in which they correctly suggest that brands "are now centre stage: they drive major mergers, and acquisitions; they appear frequently in the balance sheets of their owners; they have vexed legislators involved in updating archaic trademark law; their application now extends to organisations who a few years ago would never have considered themselves as `brands' (charities, utilities, sport's associations, cities, etc.); and they have changed irrevocably the way in which major companies organise and run their businesses." It remains for each reader to determine which essays are of greatest interest and potential value. My personal favorites are Murphy's "What Is Branding" which provides a basic but precise introductory briefing on the subject. He concludes by noting that branding is a creative process. "It uses research techniques and the skills of a number of specialists. But in the end it is about creating distinctness -- in a consumer-relevant fashion." I also admire Fogg's analysis of "Brands as Intellectual Property." (Those who share have a special interest in this subject are urged to check out Lessig's Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace.) Carratu's essay follows, probing even further into "Commercial Counterfeiting" which is, he concludes, "a profitable and growing activity that poses a serious threat to manufacturers of branded products. It is frequently very well funded and organised and is prevalent throughout the world....[Fortunately], brand owners are becoming more vigilant, but the battle has yet to be won." Tragos has much of value to say about "International Branding" as do Andrew about "Brand Revitalisation and Extension" and Hart about "The Future for Brands." For executive-level managers who are either directly or indirectly involved with marketing (in general) and branding (in particular), this really is a "must read."
