an introduction to an intriguing historical figure

If you are looking for a brief introduction to this intriguing figure in American history, _Cry Freedom_ could be it. It includes portions of most of the important literature regarding Turner, including the full text of his 'confession' to Thomas Gray. However, one must be careful. The book has attracted very little attention in the academic community. Moreover, there are several errors, and it fails to come to a proper conclusion. Use it as a 'spring-board' for further research, but if you want the definitive collection of documents on Turner's rebellion, obtain a copy of Henry Irving Tragle's _The Southampton Slave Revolt of 1831_.

R.L. Stine

Review Date: 2007-01-04
R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series of horror books for children is listed in the Guinness World Records Millennium Edition 2000 as the world's top-selling children's book series. To date, there have been more than two hundred million Goosebumps books published. For one of the world's most prolific authors of children's books, Stine is remarkably humble, according to Michelle Parker-Rock in her recent biography. The grandson of Russian immigrants, he grew up in the Columbus, Ohio, suburb of Bexley. When he was nine years old, he discovered an old portable typewriter in the forbidden attic of his childhood home. From that moment on, he was determined to be a writer. Stine wrote all through high school and college, and made a living in New York City by writing and editing magazines for children. His first literary love was humor, but a freelance job writing horror turned into his successful career as the creator of Goosebumps and other series, including Fear Street.
Parker-Rock's biography, one of the titles in the series Authors Teens Love, draws most of its information from a lengthy interview with Stine, the transcript of which is included at the end of the book, as well as from Stine's 1997 autobiography It Came From Ohio! My Life as a Writer (Scholastic). Except for a photograph of the thirteen-year-old Bobby Stine at his bar mitzvah and a definition in the glossary, there is no other Jewish content in this book. While not an important addition to Jewish libraries, this comprehensive biography is a necessary purchase for public and school libraries with other titles in the series. Middle school students and younger teens needing to write a report on a favorite author will be drawn to the straightforward prose and the wealth of additional material, such as a helpful timeline of Stine's life and publishing career, a complete listing of Stine's spooky stories, detailed chapter notes, and a list of websites.

OK When did the ORIGINAL writers of Stargate change Sam Carter to Amanda Carter and Daniel and Blonde hair(they didn't, the author did).
When you make a movie from a book you learn to get the facts right(vice-versa). It didn't happen here. Hello editor, publiser!!

I also had to push myself through the chapters. I will stick to the OTHER SG1 series. A Matter of Honor and The Cost of Honor(the best)real page turners.

Is she kidding? This was worse than the last one of hers I read. I was always told, "write what you know". I really don't think she's ever seen an episode. Daniel's blond? Amanda Carter? Please do us all a favor and write about something you know, and leave SG-1 alone.

I thought it was an ok story, but there were a lot of mistakes coming from the author and the time-line of this book: first off was that the names of the main characters were messed up, second was that this book was supposed to be some-time after their mission to Netu and their run-in with their biggest enemy, thirdly was that it wasn't till the 4th season that they met up with Osiris , and finally they got the relationships between the characters all wrong as well, such as O'neill and Frasier when in the show it would be between him and Carter. As well as the issue with messing with the imaginations of the main characters and their memories which was also brought up in the season 2 episode" The Game Keeper", and they made the crucial mistake of getting the wrong area when they mentioned finding the 2nd gate since they found it Anartica rather then in Iceland. But other then these mistakes the story was really good. Read the other three books before you read this since this is during the middle of the third season, so it'll make a little more since after a while.

Anyone who says this is a bad book obviously knows very little about writing. Granted, yes there were a few mistakes, but overall I thought the book was beautifully written. I found myself unable to put the book down. I would definitely recommend this book to die hard Stargate SG-1 fans.

Good idea, bad book.

When SG-1 goes to P4V-837, they encounter a hospitable environment and seemingly friendly natives, the Kayeechi. But after a while, they realize that they are each seeing a different landscape, and they don't know who is hallucinting. Then they are pulled into deep, dark dreams, and find themselves unable to wake up. What are the Kayeechi trying to do?

On the good side, I liked the idea a lot more than I liked the book itself, especially since all the dream sequences would have made it too confusing as an episode, which makes it worthwhile to have it in novel form. I also liked the quote at the end of the book, althought I think it might have been better at the very beginning.

But while the plot may have been a good idea, in the transition between mind and paper something flopped. First of all, no one seemed to be in character, especially toward the end. The overstated Jack/Janet attraction seemed unnatural and forced. (Anyway, I thought canon was leaning more towards Jack/Sam and Daniel/Janet, but whatever.) But what really bothered me was that nothing was really explained. We never find out how the Kayeechi turn dreams into reality, which would make more sense in the long run than what the team decides to do. The Kayeechi could make a powerful ally or a formiddable enemy, and as Vair says, they are "neither enemy nor friend" at the moment. The bad parts drag the good parts down, and it all builds up to finally crash into the wall that is the nonsensical, unsatisfying ending. Add to this the references to Daniel's blond hair and Major Amanda Carter, and this is one book you should skip.

I usually expect published material to be more well-written than fanfiction. Apparently the publishers had lower standards. this lame attempt at making money assumes that fans are stupid and will buy anything. Please prove them wrong.

I found this book lacking in the kind of specifics I was looking to get. It felt like the author simply pulled out several articles written at different times and handed to a secretary to stick in a manuscript and title each article as a chapter. What else could explain the constant mentioning over and over again one's so-called credentials. One only needs to be filled in on the author's background once, not constantly throughout the book.

Book only has 8 poorly reproduced photos showing lack of design training. Author claims the business is not a design business, but a real estate business. That's what you say when you don't know much about design. Text is printed in light grey making it really hard to read. Filled with redundant and excessive claims to fame that are unsubstantiated and highly exaggerated. Constant use of misleading terminology leading to a shallow designation with no accountability for talent. Author's clear intent is propaganda for her high priced seminars. Would not recommend this book.

I was very excited when I first found this product because I thought it would really help me with my nursing concept maps but in the end I was very disappointed. The software is very user friendly when it comes to collecting the data, but the actual concept map was a nightmare. Customizing it was a joke. As a student we're required to enter scientific rationale for each intervention which is a lot of typing. This software does not let you resize your text boxes in no way. Therefore, all of my text would end up off the page. It was a mess. I ended up having to take a screenshot, pasting the picture in paint program and then cutting and pasting the text I needed to move. I then pasted that in word and printed my concept map. I've used other Mosby products and know that they could have done better. I think they were just making this product to be able to say that they had it and to make a little money. Don't waste your money.

I purchased this to help with a class project. However I found that it did not meet my class specification, because they can vary by each instructors likes, more than care plans. So it did not help me at all. Also I found that my school text book had the exact program available for free on the internet with the web based study guide. so for me it was a redundant product. So to summerize, it was exactly what they claim, it works well, just not what I had hoped for. I have the care plan constructor from the same publisher and it was the best resorce I ever purchased for my nursing education.

Save your money and do it yourself.

Although the thought that went into creating this item was useful, the item itself is not. The headings for content areas are there, but the learning curve is steep- it was for me, and for my nursing students. There is not adequate space to allow for text entry, and it basically makes your paper pretty by adding colors.
It took my students longer to figure out how to use the program than it did for them to create their own concept maps using a standard word processing program.

I feel this program is great for nursing students (myself being one). It quikly builds concept maps and lets you know what information to gather while doing an assesment. Your teacher will be impressed by the professional look. The other reveiw states that it is very difficult to learn how to use this program, however, it took me just a few minutes to be up and running, it's SIMPLE! Anyway I highly recommend it.

Review Date: 2003-09-19
I stumbled across this book in a bookstore and bought it because of my fond memories of the Doc Savage series which I read in the seventies (I wish someone would re-issue them).

I had high hopes for learning quite a bit more about the author of so many of those books, but I ended up somewhat diappointed. Either Dent wasn't nearly as interesting as I anticpated or there's just of lot of information missing here. It may be no fault of the author's, it may well be that there just wasn't that much to write about. Dent did lead what appears to be an interesting life, he apparently was something of an adventurer, but this book is short of details when it comes to those adventures.

And there is absolutely no introspection into what drove this guy, beyond a desire to earn a living. Next to Robert E. Howard, another author who is was somewhat contemporaneous with Dent, Dent is a bore.

It's also kind of a misnomer to label him the creator of Doc Savage. The idea was actually that of the publisher, although he certainly gets credit for bringing that idea to life.

I wish I could recommend this, but as biographies go, its just not very compelling reading.

Lewis from a Pluralist Perspective
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-24
Potential readers of this book should be warned that Mr. White has written it from a decidedly un-Christian perspective. Much effort is exerted in attempts to show how Lewis was a great author in spite of his orthodox Christianity rather than because of it. For instance, as he discusses Lewis' work A Grief Observed (written after the death of his wife, Joy), the author states "it transcends this [Christian] viewpoint to become a `spiritual' work, a book that speaks of things that go beyond simplistic Christian theology." Certainly orthodox Christians will be offended by some of White's statements. He elsewhere says, "It is clear to see why Lewis would appeal most to bigoted, hard-line, old-fashioned Christians" (220). White also states that the world has changed since Lewis' lifetime and that "today few people are orthodox Christians" (219). The author thus supports the de-Christianizing of the Narnia tales so that they might reach a wider audience without imposing their religious message (which, ironically, is all that Lewis really cared about, as White admits).

For any true admirer of C. S. Lewis or any orthodox Christian, this book is undoubtedly frustrating for the reasons stated above. Along with this slanted perspective, extreme lack of insight and judgment inhibits the book's effectiveness. At one point White states that Lewis was at heart an elitist, basing this assertion on the fact that Lewis despised TVs and popular music and art. I was unaware that dislike of MTV, rock-and-roll, or Picasso could make one a deep-seated elitist. No, most of White's "conclusions" seem to be simply attempts to differ from the common viewpoint for the sake of being different, not for the sake of the truth, and thus are wrong with alarming frequency. Though Lewis was certainly less than a perfect man, as are all humans, this book, in my opinion, is not fair to him as a person or as an author.

One hundred and fifty may seem like a lot of restaurants, but I was surprised at how many good restaurants were missing. Of course, a lot of good restaurants have opened since the publishing date in 1999, but I was surprised that some very established restaurants near my home in Winter Park were not included. Since the book seems to like every restaurant it reviews, perhaps only those restaurants considered good were included. "No-holds-barred" is not how I would describe it. The book also seems to have, for better or worse, a lot of Asian restaurants in it. Instead, I would recommend the Zagat's for Central Florida, which includes far more restaurants in the Orlando area, along with both the Atlantic and Gulf beaches. It covers more low-budget alternatives and it also includes far more warning rather than praise type reviews.

Actually the designs featured in this book are so basic that he could teach them a thing or two. I guess if you're really a beginning builder than it's a decent book.

This book is a disappointment. The actual content is slim. The book has lots of white space, lots of self tests for readers, lots of blank charts for the reader to fill in as he or she plans a course, lots of bulleted "to do" lists. But it provides virtually no supporting information for any of its points or suggestions and offers no sense that Dl is actually a pretty complicated subject. In addition, it offers no references, bibliographical material, or any other support for the readers' continued learning.

This book may be useful as a workbook for those who need to thoroughly outline a project they're doing(if they already know something about Web-Based Training). Better yet, teachers of WBT/CBT or Instructional Design might use it as a workbook for student projects. It is not, however, a good place to learn about WBT--not on its' own. A more comprehensive primary text is a necessity.

Should be Titled "Evaluating the need for Training"

This 300+ page book could easily have been 150 pages. Furthermore, he spends entirely too much time in the evaluation process. If you're looking to jump into web-based training design, this book's not for you. Too much preliminary analysis chocked full of theory from basic educational classes. The first 200 pages are a repeat of what I learned in educational classes for a degree in training and technological education. If you're a beginner, then this book could give you an overview of the complete thought process of deciding whether or not you need training. In fact, he almost tries to talk you out of training, but instead to try other alternatives first. If you've already made your mind up and need an expert book on the subject, this book is NOT for you. He readily admits that he has never done WBT!?! Designed more for academia and as a student workbook. I was looking more for a book that would detail the pro's and con's of WBT and distance learning from an expert doing it. It isn't until page 252 of 350+ that he begins talking about WBT (never mind he hasn't done it). He then spends less than 50 pages on it. Disregard all of the Web-based hype that you read on the back cover and in the book synthesis from the publisher.

* Fill in these many, many "worksheet pages" * Work with experienced persons to get experience * Fill out some more checklist worksheets * Thanks for your money

PLEASE do yourself a favor, and get a WBT book in which the author acutally is a Subject Matter Expert, and not someone out to take your money and provide obvious advice.
