A Great Tenderness

Review Date: 2008-05-21
This coffee-table book is a delightful collection of gorgeous full-color paintings by the author and other artists from around the world, showing how wonderful, varied, poignant and powerful the witness of individual lives can be. All of these illustrations are done with a great tenderness; indeed, tenderness is perhaps the common thread that runs through the glorious artwork depicting cultures that span the globe, that are represented in the book. The art is by Hyatt and Anne Moore, as well as 50 other artists. The book also features poignant meditations on what it is to be created in the image of the One who created all.
The poetic text accompanying the many illustrations draws inspiration from and echoes familiar passages of scripture. The words enhance the art, such as this passage, which is paired with a painting of for men from Mexico who are seated by the road, called "Four Hats":
"Sometimes we sit and wait, watching, anticipating, biding our time. It's an active rest, waiting, like a cat content to sleep most of the day yet with an eye that opens at the first rusting. Such can be our most pleasant moments, if we'll see it. Often we don't. But life can't happen all at once..." (Page 17). The scripture with this is Isaiah 40:31: "Those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength."
Every page offers similar rich gems of spiritual insight, alongside beautiful portraits and landscapes from far flung corners of the globe. Rarely have I seen a book so perfectly designed to engage and inspire the reader.
The art ranges from oils, acrylics and watercolors to pen and ink and pencil sketches, sculpture, collage, etchings and linocuts. On would have to travel the world, looking in unusual shops and out of the way galleries to begin to assemble the kind of a collection that is presented here--and even then, such a journey would not be able to draw together the truly inspiration text, all presented with an eye toward edifying one's Christian faith.
Long what he terms "an occasional painter", Hyatt Moore began painting in earnest in 1996, first focusing on international peoples, then to full time occupation in 2004, with an ever-broadening array of subjects and approaches.

A great biography

This slim and attractive book is a wonderful biography of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the author of the classic works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Starting with his birth in South Africa in 1892, the book follows his life, focusing on the love of languages that he maintained throughout his life. Along the way, the reader is treated to many colorful pictures and informative sidebars.
Although this biography was written with the younger read (9-12) in mind, in truth it is a great biography for anyone interested in J.R.R. Tolkien. First my thirteen-year-old daughter read this book, then my wife did, and now I have; and I must say that we all enjoyed it. The book is easy to understand, but does not skimp on information. Overall, I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone interested in J.R.R. Tolkien.

A good introduction to two different graphic novel markets and an effort toward connecting the two. I'd recommend anything by the publisher, Ponent and all work by Taiyo Matsumoto.

Joan of Arcadia was very entertaining. It hit all emotions and done with humor as well. I loved it. I was surprised it didn't have a third season. I was dissappointed when it didn't come back on. Still don't know why it went off the air. I also loved the music in the show. I wish when they did the "Special Features" it could have listed the songs/artist listed of each episode per disc. I loved the music, but have know way of knowing the titles or singers who did them.

Pastor, teacher and radio personality David Ireland communicates his passion for God with an infectious enthusiasm sure to incite a similar excitement amongst his avid supporters. Whether a fresh-to-the-faith Christian or a seasoned, life-wizened believer, Ireland's newest offering provides perceptive insight and challenge to all. In short, JOURNEY TO THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD furnishes interested faith travelers with a simple road map for growing close with God.
In this 40-day plan, the author breaks down his pilgrimage quest into eight distinctive steps.
* Step One: An invitation to God's mountain.
* Step Two: Preparing the heart for the climb.
* Step Three: Valuing the fear of the Lord.
* Step Four: Pursuing a heart of holiness.
* Step Five: Daily disciplines for mountaintop living.
* Step Six: Basic ingredients for spiritual health.
* Step Seven: Unleashing God' blessings.
* Step Eight: Embracing a new perspective on all of life.
Fellow sojourners will traverse to the mountain of God by first gaining a fuller understanding of what such an invitation entails. Step One begins with awakening a spiritual thirst that develops an innate trust in God that embraces and recognizes the treasure of this eternal intimate relationship. Once believers are prepped and ready to move closer, Ireland then assists readers in assessing the health of their inner hearts. He challenges Christians to exercise their hearts by developing a moment-by-moment swiftness to repent of personal sin (including offering forgiveness to others), confessing said sin to those who will offer accountability, and making concerted, consistent efforts to apply biblical principles to everyday life problems.
Next, Ireland offers explanations on fearing the Lord and how to differentiate between the commonplace definition that mentally conjures up terror and dread, and the reverential, respectful and honoring fear all Christians should hold toward God. The author then tackles the always relevant pursuit of holiness, which he wonderfully describes as "apartness; the separation of a person or thing from the common to a divine use." The key point is that a believer is to be "dedicated to" and "set apart for" God's use. Holiness is "a nonnegotiable quality."
One of the highlights of Ireland's practical text culminates midway through his 40-day journey where he lays out the disciplines necessary to ongoing intimacy with God. These building blocks for success include obedience --- eat, drink and sleep obedience, writes Ireland. Faith follows, and then comes sensitivity, humility and teachability. Next, readers will learn about the ingredients to vibrant spiritual health starting with genuine worship, powerful praying, rich fellowship, Holy Spirit-inspired adventures and the surrendering of one's will.
In each chapter, Ireland offers personal stories and self-disclosing, often humorous anecdotes that readers will both relate to and learn from. An especially helpful add-on feature to this subject matter is the "Steps to Rehearse" section following every installment. This compact yet information-packed segment gives readers a chance to absorb and capsulate the day's message for increased impact and takeaway value.

An excellent introduction to the landmarks of modern history

This books contains biographical essays about the people who have shaped our modern world, for good and bad. It is a fascinating story, since its chronological order allows the reader to explore the evolution of the modern world from every aspect: science, art, philosophy, politics, war. Many of the lives involved are intertwined, since the work of artists and scientists are affected by what happens in the economic and political arenas, and viceversa, and many of them were contemporaries and had influence on each other, besides exchanging letters or getting involved in debates. It starts with Newton, and from then on you are witness to the most important landmarks in history: major scientific discoveries and inventions, major works of art and political developments. I read this first when I was a child (in the spanish edition), and it proved to be MY introduction to Western culture. For example, I was impelled to read Proust, since the essay contained here awoke my curiosity to find out the importance and beauty of his prose. If you read this, you will have a very good panoramic view of our history, including, as I said, art, science, philosophy and politics. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially parents with high-schoolers. The style is serious but clear and straightforward; the essays are short (8-12 pages)and try to stimulate further reading, since they include a short list of bibliography to which the interested reader can move on.
