This book had a huge impact on me as a child.

Everyone told the boy his carrot seed would not come up. Even the adults. My reaction was this: adults know everything, so why is this boy still trying? I was truly surprised when the carrot seed sprouted, and I clapped and cheered. My next reaction was this: maybe *I* shouldn't give up, even when other people tell me to. This is one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned.

I read this book to my own kids now, and they love it as much as I do.

This is an extraordinary book that separates reality from myth. Dr Jamie Fettig explains why Viruses, Bacteria, and Parasites do not make you sick, and why your Genes do not dictate your health, and gives you the key to being well and healthy.

This will probably be the most important book you'll ever read and is surely unique in its concept. If you only read one book on life, diets and health, make sure it's this one. Highly recommended.

Found this book personnally satisfying. Our family has gone through a medical crisis lately, and with the help of this book I have been able to come through with my own health less damaged. The medical professionals have not been able to help in our situation, but with the understanding I have received from this book, I am sure we will be able to come the rest of the way in good health and a better understanding of what it takes to maintain it.

With all of the books lately about new fad diets, new approaches for health, etc... this is the ONLY book I have read that truly makes sense. Dr. Fettig has simplified for everyone the 100% effective method for living, feeling, and being our very best. For anyone who wants to be free of dependence upon the medical system and is ready to learn how easy it is to be well on our own, this book is a MUST READ! I think if everyone in the world were to read this, we would be much better off.

I read this book (in about one sitting) 4 months ago. I didn't know it at the time, but Jamie's insights and practicality transformed me. Today, I'm 20 pounds lighter and I feel more vital than I've felt in a long time (maybe ever). I asked myself what happened that I've had such great results? I remembered it started with reading Jamie's book. I went on to discover the joy of raw vegan food, something that probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't read this book (no, you don't have to become a raw vegan foodist). While reading the book, Jamie assured me (with compassion and simplicity) that if I didn't take care of my health that it would fail. I know this sounds simple, who doesn't know that? However, how many times have I known things were bad for me and I did them anyway? Lots. So, Jamie managed to break through that veil of lies that I was telling myself. He wasn't preachy or anything, he delivered his message with love and excitement and profound respect for his readers. He is creating health for the whole planet. I saw that health is possible and started making the changes that were necessary to create and "add health" to my life.

This book does a great job in analyzing the traits of the great wealth creators. I've read several books on this topic and most of them are very unfocused and biographical instead of focusing on the traits (not the person) and making an argument on why they are important. The book is very well-written and focused and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in what makes these successful people tick.

"Look past the range of the moment, you who cry that you fear to compete with men of superior intelligence, that their mind is a threat to your livelihood, that the strong leave no chance to the weak in a market of voluntary trade. . . . When you live in a rational society, where men are free to trade, you receive an incalculable bonus: the material value of your work is determined not only by your effort, but by the effort of the best productive minds who exist in the world around you. . . ."
(Atlas Shrugged)

If that quotation, by Ayn Rand, hits home with you, you'll love this book by Edwin Locke.

The Prime Movers shows us what it takes to be successful in business and in life. This is not a comprehensive study of everything that applies to the topic of becoming a wealth-creator, but the author does a really good job of showing examples of what virtues are possessed by prime movers past and present. He also draws some insightful conclusions about why volition is a key to any success.

Great book for anyone interested in succeeding in becoming an independant thinker and creator.

How does one make money morally?

This book is far and away better than books by or about a single CEO because it looks at many leaders and clearly shows what is fundamental, discarding the rest. The same principles needed to run a successful company and build wealth apply whether one runs a modest store or a gigantic enterprise (or even a modest department in a large company). In today's culture most people would rather cut down and sling dirt at those at the top. It is therefore very refreshing to read why they should be admired and how to follow in their footsteps.

Inspiring and Informative

Ed Locke's _The Prime Movers_ is a fairly detailed and empirical analysis of the traits common to great business leaders. Using businessmen (and women) of the past and present as both positive and negative examples throughout, Locke makes an excellent case that traits such as independent vision, a relentlessly active mind, egoistic passion for work, and love of ability in others are essential for great success in business. (Locke then breaks down each of these traits into subcomponent traits, discussing each in turn.) Despite some painfully Objectivist bits, this book was an inspiring and informative look into what makes the movers and shakers of the economy so successful.

Mr. Hills is a very talented writer. This book starts out fast and strong, absolutely spellbinding. At close to 400 pages, it tends to ramble on a bit with too many details at times. But the writing is fresh and compelling, so the extra verbiage is easily overlooked. Unfortunately, the storytelling is not quite at the same level as the writing. The farther and farther I got into the book, the less and less interesting I found it. The first 100 pages were 5 star material to me, the next 100 at 4 stars, the next at 3 stars, by the final 100 pages I could hardly stand it any more. Very disappointing after such a wonderful start.

The enlightening parts of the story are very middle of the road Christian , they were not well developed, there was not enough synergy with the story to deliver them strongly. A good portion of the story is devoted to the pitfalls of the industrial age, which was a total misfit for the time period the story was written for, it didn't work for me. There is a moral to the story which is well developed and delivered, but I'm not going to spoil it here.

Entertainment: 3 stars
Enlightenment: 2 stars
Overall: 3 stars

Have you ever read a book that truly enlightens? And done so when the subject covered is one that you've been debating, with yourself or others, of late? Creator is difficult to sum up in a few paragraphs for its ultimate message is one that requires the experience of a life lived, or in the least a life with many decades of experience.

The summary on the back of the book sums up what the book is about, but fails miserably to describe what the book will reveal. M. A. Hills has scribed not only a highly entertaining story, but one that also touches on the human soul, the human condition, and the human need for understanding. And it is also so much more than that. To read and grasp the full meaning of Creator is to move one step closer to understanding one's self. A bold claim, I know, but one that anyone who has read the book will surely support.

And though I hail the concept I do have some issues with the execution. The writing style of M. A. Hills can be, at times, over-bearing. The descriptions of scenes and events can be so involved that impatience can set in. This is particularly true with the opening of the story, but once past these initial scenes the story moves forward with only the occasional stumble. Add to this that a typical chapter is anywhere from a single page to no more than four or five and you have a lot of wasted space. However, I did find that, once I had become accustomed to Mr. Hills's writing style, the reading moved at a faster pace.

There is one other issue that I have with the book, and that is its price. At $21.95 it seems a bit out of reach for the average reader, especially so for a paperback, and considering the overall impact this story will have on the truly open-minded, a reduction in price could only benefit all. However, the book is also available in e-book form for only $6.00.

If you have an interest in grasping the meaning of life, if you have an interest in expanding the concept of why then you should read this book. And if neither of these two concepts interests you, you should still read this book. I honestly rank it among the best reads of my entire life.

Fundamental truths

I really liked the characters in this book. They jumped out of the pages and danced before my eyes. Daedalus, the hero, tries to remain good even though he was brought up to do evil; he is like Jesus but abandoned by the gods. He must discover the reason for his existence because he is ignored by Olympus, and rebels against heaven by forming his own religion.

As far as I'm concerned, most of the other characters symbolize the ills of the human race. Galen, the foe, is the one eyed giant in the land of the blind, leading everyone into the abyss, the mad dictator syndrome. Porcia, the heroin, is the independent thinker, a wild horse, that can't be harnessed or beaten. There are fundamental truths in these characters that tell us a lot about ourselves. Good work

In my opinion, Creator puts the Roman Empire and our modern times into perspective, it tells the truth about human nature. You won't know how it ends, and sometimes you won't even know how it will possibly continue.

This is not just an ordinary historical fantasy book; this is an adventure into our thoughts and dreams. This book is more than just an epic story about this Jesus, god like mortal dude who tries to beat the Roman Empire by creating a heaven on earth, but a journey into the depths of the power of our limitless imaginations.

In The Constant Creator In You, poet and writer Ralph Carpio takes a unique approach to instruct the reader in how to become powerful, radiant, loving, and creative in their daily life. Carpio talks about Life Power (an ability to examine possible consequences and receiving all of what we wish to receive); The Giant Soda Machine (life is participatory and works in an organized way); Living Statements (the importance of life's communication with us); Unnecessary Boxes (it is a natural state to live in a steady stream of desires requiring decisions and choices); Reality Check (the role of reality checks in the empowerment process of taking charge of our lives); and The Constant Creator In You (a strong, creative force within us creates helps us deal with and shape our material conditions and circumstances). I firmly believe that this important book will be of major assistance to all, no matter how far or how long one has been on the path to self improvement or self actualization. Constant Creator is a modern new age message-quick, clean, so simple it's unsophisticated enough to be the truth. Carpio writes with sheer honesty. Sheer in the sense that he did it and he knows we can do it. Honest because it's in the grand tradition of American writing that says it's free as the air, available as freedom, and as simple as Allowing.

Intriguing glimpse into the world of feature animation

Review Date: 2005-03-12
This book is as beautiful as the background watercolors of the original movie The book takes a personal look at the stories behind the movie. Not necessarily linear in presentation, the chapters are broken into narrations by different creators of the film and either how they came to be involved or how they added to the film. The art that is scattered throughout each chapter is often beautiful.

I personally have two favorite images from the film, one a watercolor of a drainage in Hawaii, overgrown with native plants and the second is drawings of how the alien creature, experiment 626, would work showing his skeleton and structure.

This book is listed as for ages 4-8, total mistake. this is not a kids book but would be appropriate for early teens through adult. It is an excellent book for those interested in animation, or as myself, a fan of Lilo and Stitch.

A charming, lovely book, a great compliment to the movie, and the perfect gift for any fan of Lilo & Stitch. If you count this gem among your favorite films (as I do), this book is a must-have for you, as it's filled with gorgeous sketches and watercolors, showcasing the development of the characters and setting. (I'm gushing, yes, but I can't help it.) And it's filled with little stories from all the key members who worked behind the scenes, reminding you of how very human animated films are. Personally, I think this is the best of the Disney "Art of..." books, but I'm biased, as Lilo & Stitch is my favorite Disney film. It's not hardcover, but it hardly matters. The book is unique, just like the film.

"Lilo and Stitch" was the perfect summer family film. Lighthearted and heart warming, it contained all the elements of the best Disney has to offer. The great thing about this film is that it did this without all the fanfare and majesty that, as of recently, has been dragging down the Disney films. This pseudo-making-of book offers the same unpretentious vision. As most fans of Disney animation know, this type of book is released for every feature. While quite a few have been really nicely done, most have been bogged down in the technical aspects of animation. While it is an awe-inspiring and often misunderstood process, hearing and re-hearing about the animation process gets a bit stale. These publications began to feel like the same book with different pictures. Thank goodness the creators of this book have taken a refreshingly different approach to telling the story behind the story of Lilo and Stitch. Personal accounts and artistic insights prove to be just as entertaining and engaging as the sketches and watercolors that fill this slim addition to the Disney Making Of Library. Like the film, the book doesn't feel the need to show off the technical merrits of the production. Too often authors of animation books come across defensive about the medium, forcing comparrisons with other more respected mediums (film, fine art, literature) as if there is a need to defend animation. In a way they are preaching to the choir. Most people who purchase these books already respect the process, the amazing artists, and the mountains of work that goes into each production. Lilo and Stitch the book finally offers some insight into the creative minds and, more importantly, hearts of the creative forces behind the magic. Let's just hope that Disney, particularly their Florida unit, continues to produce animated features with this simple charm and storytelling. With more films and books like Lilo and Stitch it would make it easier to overlook the occasional "Atlantis" or "Treasure Planet".

I had an idea for a TV pilot brewing for quite a while. I spent a few months working on the concept. Then I spent another few months writing and rewriting it...trying to make the script the best I could. Then, when I was done I had the realization -- How Am I Going To Sell It? That question has troubled writers since the beginning of the fountain pen. So, I began to read script writing magazines and bought some books on the subject. None were hitting the core or practical enough for me to relate to. Well, that was until I opened Created By.

I have to say that this book showed me "the light at the end of the tunnel." I started reading advice from industry professionals that seemed real. I learned that many of the top TV show creators were once just like me -- a struggling writer with a script and a dream. I got some good solid and priceless advice on how to get my script read. I have just sent my pilot out to some agents!!!!

If you have a script just sitting in your hard drive with no idea how to sell it this book is your resource. Wish there were more books like this out in the marketplace.

I am a television writer who has seen a lot change in this business over the years. Because of the rapid popularity of reality television, it is harder than ever to break into the TV writing game. There are a lot of books out there that claim to show you how to get a job as a sitcom or drama writer. However, in my opinion this book is the best ever written on the subject. You get to hear from the TV show creators themselves how to write a spec script, rewrite a script, get hired on a show, pitch a network, market a show, hire talent, and much more. The author did his homework and rounded up some of the top TV show creators in this business. I found the questions asked and the stories told to be very interesting as well as encouraging. I tip my hat to the author. This is a must buy!

Created By is NOT just another one of those "how to" books that show struggling writer's how to go from crashing on their friends couch in Hollywood, to magically landing into the writers room of a top-rated sitcom. This book offers a lot more than that. It has depth and substance. It is a journey into the minds of some of the greatest television writers of our time.

Don't get me wrong, it surely gives you some great insight on how to make it. But it offers much more. I felt I really connected with the showrunners interviewed. I showed me that no one is an overnight success story. It also demonstrated that everyone has their own journey and road to success. It also taught me about what happens when the business side of the entertainment industry interacts with the creative side. Some of the stories made me laugh and some made me reflect. What a positive book!

I was not sure what I would get out of this book when I originally bought it. But I was pleasantly suprised and very inspired.

With reverence, at the very least! I came to this book after the author's 4 Agreements and found the prayers and guided meditations here very effective as I learned meditation and began to deepen my spiritual practice. It doesn't matter which denomination or religion you claim to belong to, because these truthful, poetic insights and encouragements transcend labels and unnatural boundaries. It is as if Ruiz discovered a coven of saintly horses who taught him these golden words. Read and recite these prayers and meditations like that, like you're reading and reciting poetry, and you will feel it, yes. You will feel transformed as your skin tingles, as all of your senses awaken to the wonderful world we share!

My boyfriend chanced upon this book at our local library where we were perusing graphic novels for a lark. Not only is Eden cleverly written but the art work is fantastic! I loved the section at the end with cover pictures and rough sketches.
The characters are endearing, its hard not to fall in love with the adorable antics of duckling Truman, and his best friend, weiner dog, Oscar. Both of the main human leads, Frank the vet, and Brandy, the psychiatrist are also likeable and I found myself rooting for poor Frank to finally get the nerve to ask Brandy out. Their relationship alone is enough to keep me reading!
Overall a very smart, very funny comic strip that I have now bought for myself and am collecting the rest. A must have for any comic fan and a must read since this book starts from the beginning of the strip.

From University^2 to Liberty Meadows, Frank Cho has created a masterpiece. The humor is fresh and laugh out loud funny. The best part about the comics, or in this case, the trade paper back, is that the strips are unedited.

If you want to laugh about something clever this is the book for you. Oh, and the art is great, too.

I first picked this book up thinking it was just another stupid anonymous comic book that I'd glance at and put down immediately, but upon browsing a few of the pages I started chuckling and then laughing out loud, and at one point I laughed so loud that I startled myself because I realized of course that I was in a book store and it was very very quiet except for my LOUD laughing.

A fantastic read, with realistic and believable characters that I suspect are probably taken from either the authors life or his dreams and imagination. I'd recommend to EVERYONE, however some of the jokes are aimed at older at least teenaged people, and some adult themes are weaved throughout.

The main characters are short-but-average-joe, a bunch of super-smart but WIERD animal-like characters, and the tall beauty naned Brandy that pretty much makes the book.

I wouldn't say I'm anxiously waiting for the next Frank Cho book because I have other interests that take up much of my time, but really, I'M WAITING ANXIOUSLY FOR FRANK'S NEXT BOOK! lol

Thanks for reading, I hope this review helps you decide on whether to purchase or not.

Before its voluntary departure from the Washington Post, "Liberty Meadows" had gained a loyal following that brought it back from possible cancellation more than once. Now this kooky strip and its bizarre characters are back in this book, "Liberty Meadows 1: Eden."

Welcome to Liberty Meadows, an animal preserve overseen by timid vet Frank and beautiful animal shrink Brandy. As Frank tries to muster the courage to ask Brandy out, the two of them also have to deal with the nutty animals there: a crazed Cow, Leslie the hypochondriac bullfrog, Ralph the tiny belligerant bear, Truman the water-fearing duck, and Dean the chauvinist pig in rehab.

This loony crew tries to deal with dates (where Brandy's crazed ex tries to kill Frank), the evil catfish Khan, camping trips with psychedelic mushrooms, falls into mine shafts, severed noses, truck-sized ticks, the insane stalker Cow kidnapping a celebrity and -- worst of all -- Dean's trip through the land of Cold Turkey.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a weirder comic strip than Liberty Meadows. Frank Cho combines the realistic drawing style (Frank and Brandy) with more traditional cartoon styles (the animals, and supporting humans like the handyman). Filled with wry pokes at pop culture and political correctness, it's refreshing and amusing in a sea of stale comics.

If you weren't lucky enough to read "Liberty Meadows" during its stint in the papers, check out "Liberty Meadows: Eden." Silly, weird, bizarre, and immensely entertaining, this is definitely worth a read.

I have read this book a couple of times. I have used Dr.Colling's book, among others, to reconcile my scientific understanding, specifically concerning evolution, and my faith. I have been able to develop a harmonious understanding between the two topics, that I was told could never coincide. I thank Dr.Colling for his hard work and encourage his continuing research.

Controversy Builds Interest

In September of last year (2007), Olivet Nazarene University Professor Richard G. Colling found himself embroiled in a controversy over views expressed in this book. Random Designer (Browning Press, 2004) had been used as a textbook in some of his science courses, and recommended by other professors at the university. When certain church members and pastors learned of the content of Random Designer, they objected to Colling's views on evolution loudly and persuasively. Despite the support of faculty at Olivet, several of these denominational leaders wielded their influence to intervene and compel the removal of Colling from the biology department.

One unintended consequence of their action is that I picked up and read Colling's work. Hopefully, the controversy will spur many such new sales, because I believe that many will benefit from reading Random Designer. The book targets some of those very pastors that led the charge against Colling, as indicated on this slip cover blurb:

"Written in easy-flowing personal narrative for working professionals, pastors, religious leaders, public school teachers, college students, and people of all faiths, Random Designer is a story of a loving and caring Creator who miraculously harnesses the random and chaotic forces of nature to accomplish his ultimate purposes. And now, after faithfully laboring for billions of years to bring His creation to an awareness of Himself, He calls to us from the deepest recesses of our minds. Will we hear His voice?"

Random Designer is divided into two sections. Section I deals with the science of randomness. Randomness is the necessary consequence of the laws that govern our cosmos, particularly the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, or entropy. Colling shows how entropy works as a randomizer, and how this same law suffuses the earth with a constant flow of energy which in turn serves to being order to randomness. Hence, in Colling's view, the natural rise of life on earth through evolutionary processes. Randomness becomes the necessary fodder for natural selection, and it is apparently the Designer's tool of choice. If like me, you have contemplated the place of randomness in Creation, you will benefit from Colling's descriptions of these processes.

In Section II, Colling turns from science to the theological and practical considerations of randomness. I want to highlight two of the chapters. One seeks to answer questions that surround Adam. Is Adam an historical figure? Is he a metaphorical "stand-in" for the human race? Colling explores these and other possibilities. A chapter which fascinated me is entitled "The Ultimate Creation". Colling cites science which suggests that the human race may have arrived at the pinnacle of evolution. The same processes of randomness that increase complexity must also serve to maintain complexity. The complexity of the human genome may have reached a balancing point. Or to put it another way, the human genome may be nearing full capacity. If this is true, as genetics suggests it may be, then it is not unreasonable to conclude that we are the ultimate creation of the Random Designer!

Random Designer is written for undergraduates, and as such is an easy read. If you are seeking understandings which bring purpose and order to a world of apparent randomness, you may find Colling's book helpful.

Colling writes in a clear and understandable manner to show how biology, and in particular evolution, is in accord with basic Christian theology. Frankly if you have studied biology a good deal, you'll find this work rather repetitive and simplistic. You want to read something like Perspectives on an Evolving Creation or God After Darwin: A Theology of Evolution. But this book is ideal for the biology layman, who had little training or forgot what they learned previously, and never understood the basics of evolution.

In a sence, Colling is the anti-Behe. Behe wants to show how there are some aspects of life that are inherently complex, and therefore couldn't have evolved. He therefore goes into great detail on the steps of different processes, to show how this is a complex process, and obviously, couldn't have happened "merely by chance". In doing so, he doesn't go into any greater detail than would be found in a myriad of other disciplines, in a higher-level text consulted by experts in the discipline. Behe thus gives an impression of false complexity. Colling instead shows how the basics of evolution are easily understandable, while recognizing that the theory is rather complex. Colling goes through evolution step by step, relating it to our understanding of God in the Bible, thus showing that the issue is more a matter of superior pedagogy and good heuristics, rather than objects which are "irreducibly complex".

The first half of the book shows what evolution is, and why it's believable. Colling explains in concise terms ideas like entropy, neatly side-stepping misconceptions commonly held by Literal Creationists like entropy forbidding the development of complex lifeforms. The second half delves into what the meaning of all this evolution can have for our understanding of Christ as Christians. Particularly of note is the title idea- that randomness exists, and God uses this randomness in his design. Indeed, it is within this idea that Colling actually introduces some novel thoughts, on how failure is necessary for God's success.

This is not a book to convince the unbeliever, nor is it groundbreaking for those who closely follow the Intelligent Design controversy, or the theology of evolution. It is however an excellent work for those new to the discussion, wishing to get their feet wet and understand the basics. In fact, for that purpose, I have never run across a finer book.

This book addresses science and faith. Colling starts out discussing thst the purpose of the book is to attempt to reconcile, explain, and exlore the views of science and faith. The fist part of the book involves bringing non-science people up to speed on basic biological principles and research. The second part addresses the much more elusive aspect of why we were created as we were created.
This book is like beef jerky. It is really tough to chew and the processing is slow at times, but when you get done, you have to have another piece. It is hard to reform ideas about creation from the Christian upbringing to accepting the scientific evidence. It would seem that God could have chosen evolution to create His most prized possession. The informationon the Second Law of Thermodynamics, radio isotope dating, the Big Bang theory, and the possible ways that the first life could have formed was extremely helpful and tactfully presented.
The foundation set in the first part stands firm for the much more subjective second part. Some main points were that we were created to know the Creator, humans are the first creation with the ability to discern the presence of God, life is mainly about intimate relationships , and we are made in the image of God, therefore having the mind of God.
No matter what veiws you hold on this issue, this would be a beneficial book for you to chew on.
