If you enjoy politics mixed with humor,then this book by Ken Berwitz and Barry Sinrod is the one for you. It is done in a nice point-counterpoint style with Ken taking the conservative stance while Barry takes the hopelessly liberal point of view. This book is a very good read and definitely worth your time!

I read this book in ONE day, actually..I followed my husband around reading it aloud to him! Its funny, insightful and perfect for this campaign season. The odd part is, its not ABOUT political issues, its about those who vote D or R and the differences in their personal lives.
A refreshing read now when most of politics is negative and nasty. These guys did a great job, however, even though I voted Democratic for many many years, I found myself enjoying Kens point of view the most. I recommend it especially for households where husband and wifes votes cancel each other out. It will brighten your day!

This is one funny book, with a real twist... It takes questions that are actually not that related to politics, but more personal, such as how often you take a bath or if you like the lights out during sex - and then they argue over the poll results of respondents who were either registered Democrats or Republicans. What a hoot! It's not only interesting but actually rather revealing about the personal nature of these two cultures, and frankly, (sorry, my liberal compatriots!) the Republican (Ken) has a lot more "real knowledge" here to offer than the Democrat writer (Barry), it seems. But only because this particular liberal Democrat seems to take an awful lot of energy and wasted time calling the Republican a lot of names. Barry also complains a lot outright, which comes across with rather a whiny tone - all the while providing a ton of stereotypical images from the 1970s instead of now - which by itself is rather funny. However if you're looking for any solid political comments, beware that the reader is left of flat on the Democrat's side. Barry's writing is always last, too, which usually sticks with the reader more, providing a "recency effect". Because of that, too often in this text that results in a bitter feeling reminiscent of a "Michael Moore" type of nutty remark from the Democrat side, which even conservatives might feel is perhaps too much of a cartoonish image of the "left". But this is more of a humorous book than a serious one, of course, so that makes it all the better. That being said, the political wisdom offered by Ken (the Republican writer)is more real and useful, but BOTH of these men are very funny! Someday, I'd like to see another book done... My wish would be that perhaps next time around, Ken Berwitz might get himself a more skilled debater, and take it up another notch, for some real, true political debate, about issues that are truly on the voting table for 2008. Somehow Ken seems to be able to do this without killing his writing partner, and that's amazing. This was a fun book and I'd recommend it to anybody for a good laugh!

This is one of the most clever books written on politics. It deals with both sides of the political ideologies. Your heart will tickle with laughter. In this era of political partisanship you will enjoy the information. There is something in the book for every political junky. Take the time to enjoy politics for a change and massage your brain with fun and laughter!

down in the dc metro area, this book is exactly what we need to break away from the day to day droning political analyses. a hilarious, smart and finally a unique way to view the differences between the 2 parties, it combines my favorite things - politics, psychology and humor. i've recommended it to everyone around here who takes politics too seriously or has been waiting for someone to acknowledge the humor in it all......fabulous!

This was an incredible book. You can go to what is left of the Alamo today and try and imagine it, but this book brings it all together for anyone interested in this amazing story. Beautiful art and camera work gives it a realistic feel. Definitely a great book.

I am surely not well informed enough to comment intelligently upon the details of Mark Lemon's work, but it certainly appears he has done an extraordinarily thorough job of researching and analyzing and integrating every scrap of evidence about the Alamo's configuration at the time of the 1836 battle. Lemon has then used that research to create an intensely detailed, accurate 1:48 scale model of the complex. And in "The Illustrated Alamo 1836: A Photographic Journey" he presents us with sharp, clear photographs of the model, supplemented by the author's sketches and drawings of various details. The photographs of the model, naturally lit and inserted into natural backgrounds, create a persuasive illusion that we are looking at the real thing, that somehow Mark Lemon has taken his camera back to 1836 aboard a flying time machine.

Anyone intrigued by the story -- and the mysteries -- of the Alamo battle cannot help but being enthralled by "The Illustrated Alamo 1836". It is one of those books that really creates a "you are there" experience.

It is beautiful, you really have the feeling that somebody went back to the Alamo in march 1836 with a digital camera!

This book was recommended to me by the excellent staff at the John Wayne Alamo set in Bracketville, Texas. Mark Lemon does a FANTASTIC job of taking us back in time to give us, for the first time, a painstakingly researched, meticulously crafted, image of what the Alamo looked like at the time of the siege. A visit to the Alamo set in Bracketville along with this book are must haves/do for any Alamo history buff. Of the many books about the Alamo in my library, this is the one I will show family and friends who come to visit us in San Antonio. Just a stunning, stunning work.

This book is fantastic, as a die hard alamo fan, I have never ever seen better drawings and models of the Alamo, everything is true to detail, and the photos of the model are made outdoors with real Texas sunshine and real shadows...this is better than the real thing. Aerial views of the Alamo as it looked in 1836, detailed views of the different parts of the Alamo....if you LOVE the Alamo, you must have this book!! Seriously!!

It Happened in Manhattan probably is the anti-book for unreformed New York haters. It revels in the story of Manhattan, a 22-square-mile borough in the city during the mid-20th century.
Interviews with more than 60 current and former residents of Manhattan tell a rich story of city life in the post-war era. The prologue, a monologue by Sid Bernstein, the music promoter who arranged the first Beatles's appearance in America, is wonderful.
"I'm still a tourist in the city I was born and raised in," says Bernstein. "I'm a walker of the city streets." Bernstein wanders and explores by his own north star: his sense of smell. "If I walk by a place and an aroma greets me, I go there."
There are plenty of food stories in It Happened in Manhattan. There is a lot more, of course. Sections deal with memories of growing up in Manhattan, of starting careers in finance and fashion, of finding sanctuaries in churches or museums. There are memories of restaurants, nightclubs, department stores, eateries, celebrities. People remember when they cleaned out a section of a restaurant for Frank Sinatra's posse, the early days of Bette Middler, described as colorful as a "Jewish parrot."

Father Peter Colapietro, pastor of Holy Cross Church on 42nd Street, offers his recollections:

As a kid, I always saw Sixth Avenue as the dividing line between the East and West Side. The East Side was Rock Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral; the West Side was the stuff on 42nd Street. It was like you needed a passport to go from one to another... Even though Manhattan was only a fifteen-cent ride away from where I lived in the Bronx, it was a whole new world. I felt I had to dress up to go down there. I couldn't wear jeans and a polo shirt. I was an eleven- or twelve-year-old, I knew what Playboy magazine was, but when I went into some of these stores on 42nd Street - wow! Ten or twelve of us used to come down to Herman's Flea Circus. It had an arcade with pinball machines, magic shows, and a famous Flea Circus. We would go to Rockefeller Center and see as many television shows as we could get into, getting there early to be first on line for shows like The Price Is Right, The Match Game, and Truth or Consequence. A warm-up person like Johnny Olson would ask the audience, "Anybody out there celebrating a birthday? anniversary? parole? We got to know the routine. Once my kid brother and I got a pair of handcuffs. When Johnny Olson got to "Anybody celebrating parole?" we raised our hands handcuffed to each other.

This is the single greatest Bible study tool I have ever came across! Keener makes scholarly information available to anyone who can read. I would recommend every believer to own a copy!

This book is outstanding it's very detailed, well-organized and great quality. The commentaries are well researched, easy to read and understand. A must have for anyone interested in bible study.

This book has been an excellent resource for me both in my personal Bible reading and in preparing sermons.

The first sermon I ever gave was directly informed by the historical information I learned about from this book.

It really illuminates the historical background for all the verses in the New Testament.

I have taken a course with Dr. Keener, and his passion shines through in this book. I have never met someone who works harder than he does. It is big, but it is not a difficult read. If you are looking for answers, you will find them here. Want to know why the signs in John are so important (and it is "signs" rather than "miracles" in John for a reason), you will know. If you want to know the significance of the numbers and churches in Revelation, you will know.

This is a helpful resource in helping to understand who the Bible text is written to. By understanding the historical background, you can interpret the scriptures accurately.

I am a big fan of the Doors, and Jim Morrison (went to his grave in Pere La Chaise twice) and I had long been looking for a coffee table book on Jim that was both interesting to look at and a fine read, too. This pop-up book has pockets and slides of letters, photos and mementos so well reproduced they look like originals; it's a must-have for anyone who loves arts and crafts and The Doors! Enjoy it!!

I am a devoted Jim Morrison/Doors fan but wasn't aware of this book until my nephew mentioned it to me while we were at a Ozzie/Rob Zombie concert. I promised to give it to him for his birthday. I bought it from Amazon and before I wrapped it I spent at least two hours going through it. This is the most well-conceived, cohesive, unbelievably put-together book I have ever seen. I could not stop going through it and taking all the papers out of their pockets and reading Jim Morrison's letters to his mother, report cards, letters to Jim from his pastor, teachers, etc. Every insert looks like the original document. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I gushed over it so much I hope my kids get the hint and give it to me for Mother's Day!

Excellent collector's edition book for any Jim Morrison/The Doors fan. Full of never before published pictures, handwritten lyrics and letters by Jim Morrison. A must buy for any Doors fan.

The Jim Morrison Scrapbook *****

With the abundance of material that has been released and re-released and alternately released from the Jim Morrison estate in the past decade very little of it has been any good. It is mostly things that had already been released on one thing or another deeming it pointless to own, but not The Jim Morrison Scrapbook. Oh-no! This is phenomenal and a must have for Doors-geeks like myself. This shows sides of Morrison rarely or never shown.

Chronicling the genius from birth, poet, songwriter, lover, performer, and death. This is a book explaining all of those things about the man, but with actually tangible documents like his will, report cards, letters, his handwritten lyrics, rare seen photos; some of which have never been released to the mass public.

The Jim Morrison Scrapbook is the first in a series of "scrapbooks" being released of famous legends. As of right now a Bob Dylan, and John Lennon version is also available. This is essential for all rock fans! A must read!

Harold Holzer has put forward a masterpiece into the study of the mind set of Abraham Lincoln. I am not to be regarded as a Civil War expert. I do not read everything on the happenings of the American Civil War. My understanding of these times of American History reside at the College Survey level.
I learned much of the mind set of Mr. Lincoln in his speech in New York City on February, 1860. Lincoln was truly a great politician. His speech at Cooper Union was the ultimate sitting on the fence appeasement speech. Neville Chamberlain should be ashamed! At this time in American history, this is what America wanted. Being the shrewd politician that he was he continued this process and ultimately won the Presidential election.
One thing I took from this book is that Lincoln wrote all his speeches. He was very careful in in the words he crafted. As the years went by he carefully changed his position on Slavery and the meanings of a unified government. In all Lincoln got what both he and the majority of Americans wanted. That being a United States of America. Good read!! Five Stars!!!

Lincoln at Cooper Union: The Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President (Simon & Schuster Lincoln Library) The book does a good job of documenting the impact of the speech and provides a copy of it. I consider the book to have given me thoughtful insights to Lincoln that are incidental to the speech but greatly enhance my understanding of him as a human being. It is very elegantly written. I appreciate the author's truely first rate descriptive abilities.

Harold Holzer's book on Abraham Lincoln's speech at Cooper Union gives a clarity to the importance of that speech and how it affected Lincoln as a speaker, politican and future candidate for his Republican Party. While Lincoln was well known among the western states, he wasn't that well regarded along the northeastern seaboard. One of the most important things about the book was how the author explained how this speech gave Lincoln so much creditability among the easterners and how that speech firmly put Lincoln on the political map national wide. This helped pave the way for Lincoln's nomination when others were looking for alternative choices beside William Seward who was at that time, the leading Republican front runner.

The book proves to be quite informative. Abraham Lincoln is obviously one person you cannot judge by your first impression. The author throughly explained the mannerism of Lincoln's speech skills and the way it contrast to his physical appearances which often led to initial misgiving by the audience before they roared in their approval at the end of the speech.

Its pretty clear that Mr. Holzer have complete command of his subject matter which is reflected on the superb writing and ease of reading material that only an expert can do to any subject. The book appears to be well researched and it was about time that a book on this subject came out (I think the last book about this speech came out before Mr. Holzer was born).

I would considered this book to be a mandatory reading material for anyone interested in Abraham Lincoln and probably a good background material for anyone interested in the coming of the American Civil War.

There are so many books written on Lincoln and many different prespectives on his life and presidency. Holzer looks at the Cooper Union Speech and shows how Lincoln, the master politician used the speech and his trip East to get the 1860 nomination. Many historians assert that the speech made Lincoln. However, Holzer shows a unique view of the trip and the speech and how Lincoln used the opportunity to campaign in the East before he was officially a candidate. Ironically, Holzer points out that Salmon Chase turned down the opportunity to speak at Cooper Union demonstrating just one more ocassion when Chase blew an opportunity to get to the White House.

While dispelling many myths about the speech and Lincoln's trip, Holzer also shows the brillance of Lincoln and the time and effort that he spent in preparation for this speech. He also shows how this speech became Lincoln's stump speech. Once nominated, Lincoln followed the tradition of the time and did not campaign but used the Cooper Union Speech as essentially his platform.

For the person just beginning their interest in Lincoln or the seasoned scholar, this book is well worth the read. To add to that it is a quick and enjoyable read.

For anyone who wants to use the founding fathers as a justification for their belief system should read this speech and this book.

Lincoln in tight, careful reasoning lays out exactly what the founding fathers believed in regard to slavery. Eloquent, exciting and challenging.

This is much needed study to the speeches of Lincoln.

I've been camping in Maine for a few weeks... Mainers expect you to have one of these. They say "get out your DeLorme's" not "do you have a map?" Some people I've met have pointed me to the right page without looking at the back.

The details in this atlas are great! All of Maine's public reserve land and campground are clearly marked. If you are trying to do some real camping in some remote areas, get this map. This is a must if you are going to be doing anything outdoors in ME. I never thought I'd say a map is fun to read.

After reading reviews on Amazon, I bought this book with a couple of others for my sister-in-law who moved to Maine. Within a week of moving to Maine, they got lost and used this atlas to find their way! They really like it.

This is the bible of maps of Maine. And most, if not all, other states have a version available. The first time you use it will probably make the purchase worthwhile.

If you like maps and spend any time in Maine hiking, paddling, or traveling backroads, you must have this. It is fun to study and indispensable for exploring Maine.

The detailed maps are great but guys...no use looking for a road map of Maine, I mean the whole state as it doesn't exist: incredible! so do order a map in addition!!

This book of Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920 is absolutely essential when researching one's ancestors. It is possible to trace their migration across this land in the earlier years of settlement. In fact, because of the differing boundries of counties and State divisions, it is necessary to place the ancestor in the correct location in his/her day rather than as the current maps show it today. It is the difference sometimes of locating a correct ancestor by a certain name and confusing another person with the same name in a slightly different location who is not kin at all. I am 100% delighted with this book.

This book is a wonderful tool for genealogists to see the boundary changes for each county in each state for each Census year. It gives the dates when changes were made which helps in knowing where to look for vital records, land records, probate records etc. The book is very easy to read and understand.

The "Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920" has been one of the most helpful books I have ever used. It helps coordinate counties with the years of the census records. So glad to have found it online!! It would be a 5 Star if it was hardcover!!

I've been doing family research for 25 years and it's about time i got my own federal census map guide. How do you know where your family was in any given year w/out it? I use it every time i turn on the computer-this is so worth it.

Due to ever degrading literary taste of our post-war generation, Stefan Zweig has been forgotten for few decades,in spite of the fact that the first half of the 20th century , Zweig was perhaps one of the most famous and popular authors in the world. He and compatriot Hugo von Hofmannsthal had almost pararell lives.They were both some sort of literary prodigies(Hofmannsthal and Zweig earned their fame in their teens).They began their literary careers as poets and ended up writing various kind of literary genres,including libretto for Strauss. Also both ended up committing suicide. Zweig wrote many memorable fictions ,but only one novel.And, this is "Beware of Pity".
The novel is a kaleidoscope of the Habsburg dual monarchy.Zweig's talent lays on his superb description of human psyche of each character and the representation of comtemporary time. this work well represents decaying , both morally and physically , Habsburg dual monarchy. It shows how anarchoronistic system of mores( of K.u.K) that led otherwise good natured and a bit simple minded Leutenant Hoffmiler conered to the desperate situation. Does Hoffmiler deserve his fate? read book and decide that by yourself. what amazed me was how well Zweig synchronized and symbolized tragic denoument of kekeskalva family with the outbreak of" the war to end all wars". This is both pcychological and historical drama par excellence.One of forgotten masterpiece that recently rediscovered. Thank you NYRB to bring Zweig back.

This is an intense, psychological drama, and a page-turner to boot! What's so great is the wonderful language, the "lofty" writing. I just loved every page, and our poor, tortured hero.

In the introduction to this book Joan Acocella tells Zweig's story as a writer. One of her claims is that despite his enormous popularity as biographer, essayist, writer of great novellas and stories, this novel is his masterpience. The novel is in essence the story of a feeling, of 'pity' of how it becoming the obsession and duty of the main character turns self- serving and destructive. Briefly , the book revolves around the relationship between a poor Austrian officer Hoffstein and a crippled seventeen year old daughter of a wealthy family Edith Kekesfalvas. After he has inadvertently insulted her by having asked her to dance he becomes bound into a relationship with her, in which she falls deeply in love with him without his truly reciprocating. This is how Acocella reads the protagonist's reasoning and its result after her doctor informs him that it would be disastrous for him to abandon her.

"So he descends ever deeper into hypocrisy. In the process, Zweig gives us a piercing analysis of the motives underlying pity. Gradually Hofmiller realizes how much he enjoys the courtesies paid to him for his emotional services, how it pleases him that when he arrives at the Schloss his favorite cigarettes--and also the novel (its pages already cut) that he had said in passing that he wanted to read--are laid out on the tea table. Nor is it lost on him that his own sense of strength is magnified by Edith's weakness and, above all, by his growing power over the Kekesfalvas, the fact that if he, a poor soldier, does not present himself at teatime, this great, rich household is thrown into a panic, and the chauffeur is dispatched to town to spy him out and see what he is doing in preference to waiting on Edith. Beyond the matter of power, however, Hofmiller finds that the emotion of pity is a pleasure just in itself. It exalts him, takes him to a new place. Before, as an officer, he was required only to obey orders and be a good fellow. Now he is a moral being, a soul."

This end in destruction is somehow a foreshadowing of what would happen to Zweig.Having been betrayed with the rise of the Nazis by the Europe he loves, tried to make a new home and life with his second wife in Brazil. But it does not work out and the both of them are found after having taken fatal overdoes of drugs hands intertwined.

It's a fabulously written book about love instigated by pitty, which can be very dangerous. Worth reading as this kind of thing still happens every day.

...no, not the book by Dave Eggers, but this masterpiece by Stefan Zweig. I came upon this by accident, and bought it, intrigued by the story outline and the reviews below. Only very, very rarely does a book have the power to draw me into the lives of the characters, probably because they're usually just that - characters. Not so here. Here we have flesh and blood and all that entails. I'm still amazed at Zweig's story telling. He's the kind of writer who could make a shopping list fascinating. I lived and breathed every single word in this incredibly beautiful book, and, as has been said elsewhere, the tension becomes almost unendurable. I can hardly do justice to it in a few words. Weirdly, I often found myself smiling, not because it's a funny book, far from it, but just through an appreciation of Zweig's supreme mastery of his art. This is one of those books appearing only a few times in your life that wring emotion out of you whether you like it or not. A heart-breaking, unforgettable and life-enriching experience.

I'd also like to praise the translation, by Trevor and Phyllis Blewitt. At no time is there even a hint that you're reading a translation - something that occurred to me only after finishing the book. On the contrary, it seems to me that the elegance of the language and all the magnificent virtues that contribute to Zweig's humanity and genius have been faithfully rendered. The proof is in my twin disappointments; coming to the end, and learning that there are no further full-length novels by Zweig. I'll definitely be reading all his other works, though.
