Mental Viagra for the Narrative Soul

One of my interests in the area of sexuality is the interaction of sexuality and spirituality, so I was somewhat disappointed that there was not mention of that in the book. In my opinion, the messages that many people receive from their faith community often form the basis for their self-defeating ideas about sexuality. However, I found the chapter on Narrative therapy most helpful because it provided some substance to my argument. Doan explained that "narrative work, informed by social constructionist notions, seeks to liberate clients' voices from the oppression of cultural mythologies and discourses" (p. 155-156). In addition, I believe that the conversation on pages 165-169 further highlights the impact of what I refer to as "religiously defined sexuality."
Of all the chapters in the book, I was able to connect to this chapter most because I consider myself to be a Narrative Therapist. It offered new insights for me into how to work with clients who present with complaints about their attitudes about sex. Though the chapter did not go into great details about the influence of spirituality on sexuality, I was able to apply the core ideas in my personal project for the class which centered on the influence of spirituality on individual's ideas about sexuality. With that said, I feel that the next edition of the book would greatly benefit from an article that deals specifically with the issues of spirituality and sexuality. As a therapist who belongs to the Christian community, I am often left feeling as if I am being pulled between two worlds--the world of therapy and the world of Christianity. Quite often it seems that the suggestions made by therapists are not in sync with fundamental Christian doctrine or practices, and the suggestions made by Christian writers and leaders are often not in harmony with systemic assumptions. While this tug-of-war can be exhausting, it does provide me with some understanding of what clients may be experiencing.
Again, I thank you for your contribution to the field and for your influence on my educational experience as I have been fortunate to study under two of your best and brightest students. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the next edition.

Sincerely,

Tekulve Martial-Vann

Quickies served as wonderful foreplay! Several thoughts in the book provoked ideas and challenges, which have helped me to evolve into a better and more aware therapist. The highlight of the book can be found on page 174. This section discusses the therapist's exploration and evaluation of self when seeing clients. The questions were very useful. I believe I can apply this idea to every client, based on their particular incoming issue, simply by rephrasing the questions.

I also particularly enjoyed Chapter Eight - Just Between Us: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy. I really appreciated the distinction that was made between professional and personal conversation made on page 127. I think that that is something very important to highlight. In addition, reading the section on Relational Sex Therapy was very helpful to my development as a therapist. I could really appreciate and understand your understanding of the multiple relationships that exist within the therapy room. This concept indirectly reiterates the importance of going into the therapy room from a stance of curiosity. This resonates with my own therapeutic assumptions and orientation. By taking a not-knowing posture, the therapist is being non-assuming and showing genuine interest by asking questions to the client. A great example of this is described on page 175 regarding gay and lesbian clients.

Furthermore, great conversations were explored in my Masters level Couples and Sex Therapy class. Your book initiated discussions about a variety of topics, such as some of the following:
* Is there really a difference between making love and having sex?
* What is "making hate"?
* The struggle between parents and children to talk about sex
* Is nudity sexual?
* The definition of sexual intercourse
* One's relation to sex vs. the relation to the person you're having sex with
* Language separation - being female vs. feminine and being male vs. masculine
* The concept of there being more than just two sex types

So, yes, in my opinion, you have accomplished your third goal of "stimulating conversations and further explorations of brief sex therapy." Hence, I am thankful for your thoughts on the subject matter. It has influenced my ideas and created a better understanding of therapy. Thank you.

Dr. Shelley Green and Dr. Douglas Flemons,

I am a student in the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia. One of our professors, Martha Laughlin, used your book for one of our classes: Couples and Sex. I must say that for an overall read, being a student, it was very educational and helpful to me in my journey towards being a marriage and family therapist. The use of case illustrations, while intertwining the disciplines of Batesonian systemic thinking, helped me to more clearly understand how to apply these principals that I am learning. Additionally, when reading through the case illustrations, I was able to apply the teachings of my sociology background, such as social construction and dominant social narratives, and have a clearer understanding of how these can be used in therapy.
On account of personal preference, I found certain chapters more interesting than others. Chapter ten, "How Do Therapists of Same-Sex Couples `Do It'?" was a favorite of mine. Being open to either an opposite-sex or same-sex relationship myself, I could relate to the information described in both chapter ten and chapter two. It is true that there is limited research that can speak about the sexual difficulties of same-sex relationships, and I was glad to see that you both included these chapters. I found this book to also be intriguingly humorous. The double-meanings in some chapter headings such as, "Come Again? From Possibility Therapy to Sex Therapy," "Out of My Office and Into the Bedroom," "Just Between Us: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy," "Who Really Wants to Sleep With the Medical Model? An Eclectic/Narrative Approach to Sex Therapy," and my personal favorite, "How Do Therapists of Same-Sex Couples `Do It'?" were a delightful aspect to the book. As mentioned in the introduction of this book, these chapter headings and titles grab the reader's attention and hold it there. Sex therapy is indeed a "serious business," but the lightheartedness of these chapter headings makes the book not only a "serious" read, but a fun one too. It is refreshing to know that you can read one of your class books for fun. You had mentioned in the introduction that this was one of your motives. Well, in my opinion you succeeded.
One other chapter that I enjoyed was chapter six, and how author Thorana S. Nelson "briefly" spoke about the different parts of family therapy that have helped to form her orientation to therapy, structural, Bowenian, behavioral, solution-focused, and narrative. For me, as a reader this helped me to better articulate the views behind the therapist and why she chose certain interventions. As a therapist, it is my orientation that you have to be able to make sense of your client's behavior in order to form that therapeutic relationship of change. Vice versa, it is helpful for me to be able to make sense of the therapist in order to understand how change occurred.
The book was well written; therefore, I did not find anything to be significantly confusing. I understand that as a writer/editor, it is more helpful to receive criticisms as opposed to praise, but I do not want to find myself trapped into trying to find something out of nothing. Yet, this did not surprise me considering that I agree with the majority of the ideologies contained in the book. If anything, what I gained most from this book was a better understanding of how to put these theoretical principals into practice. It was an "out of the book and into my therapy room" experience. Thank You for this.

Dear Dr. Green and Dr. Flemons,

After reading your book, Quickies the Handbook of Brief Sex Therapy, I discovered sex therapy could be possible for someone like me! I had been baffled for about a year thinking how sex therapy could occur in the therapy room in a brief and systemic way. Your book managed to put my questions into perspective. I particularly found the Narrative approach to be very helpful. Using a literary metaphor as opposed to the medical model made perfect sense to me. I have found it to be very popular in the mental health field to rely on the medical model in order to make sense of the "problem." However, the eclectic/narrative stance brought about a very new intriguing way in which sex therapy could be incorporated. The book brought out a systemic way towards sex therapy in which the clients do not have to feel someone is "wrong." I must have reread this segment at least 5 times. How wonderful it is to have a conversation with clients without having to identify someone to blame. The book gave me an understanding of how to include externalizing in therapy. For example, the idea that "the problem is the problem" as opposed to "person is the problem" liberated me and my clients from the ongoing trap of medicalizing therapy.
The book presented a good look at therapy in a systemic/cybernetic fashion. I was intrigued by each chapter's introductory paragraphs. The book provided profound insight into the techniques and concepts that were to be applied in the case vignettes. I discovered how much I benefited from the first few paragraphs of each chapter.
The uses of case vignettes were very helpful as well. As a graduate student struggling to learn how to incorporate techniques within a systemic foundation, the vignettes helped display how these skills were used. Specifically in chapter eight, you speak about a relational approach to sex therapy. This chapter helped me experience the importance of a systemic approach in therapy. For example, the chapter mentions, never to focus on just one relationship at a time, but to be aware of other changes in the couples' lives. This allows flexibility and relational freedom to the clients' relationships with whatever the problem may be. Information such as this helped me as the reader grasp the overall concept of the books message.
One aspect of the book that took me a bit off guard was the title. When I first read the title I had some anticipation that the book would be a bit more sexual. For example, sexual in the sense that it would include more graphic details about sexual experiences and styles. However, the book ended up being much more informative than I had expected. The title had me thinking different things about the book as opposed to what I had ended up reading.
The book overall was very enlightening. It was one of those books that never end up on the shelf read only once. The book served more than just a manual for me, but also a very enjoyable read.

Thanks,
A.J. Ramirez

A story of the industrial revolution in Wales

Review Date: 2007-04-19

"The Fair Country" is rural Wales and this is a novel of the industrial revolution - or rather, a polemic against it.

The story is set in a Welsh valley, and begins in 1826. It describes how the valley became a centre of iron production, and is highly critical of the human cost of industrialisation.

The writing is quite moving and powerful, and will be what most people read this book for.

The attitudes presented in "Rape of the Fair Country" are rather one-sided and simplistic. Over the last century, the word "luddite" has become a pejorative term of abuse to mean someone who is mindlessly opposed to technological change or reform approved of by the person using the word. This novel is literally pro-luddite in the original sense of that expression in that the heroes and heroines of the book are opposed to the human cost of the industrial revolution.

The book represents the government and ironmasters as a machiavellian evil, and the Welsh working men who eventually rise against them as brave and noble but foolhardy.

I was initially tempted to caricature this book by desribing it as so pro-luddite as to make the Teamsters union seem like the John Birch society by comparison. However, that would be a little unfair, as the book also depicts the awful results which can follow if people are too quick to resort to force, even in what would otherwise be a just cause, without thinking through the consequences.

I am 27 and embarrassed to say that "Rape of the fair country" is the first book I've really read, but what a way to start! When you begin reading the book you soon become inseparable for you feel as though you are part of the "Mortymer" family. Its a tragic but beutiful tale of life at the begining of this century in the iron works of the South Wales Valleys. But it's an eye opener into the world we live in today. (Some third world countries). It makes you appreciate our past and be thankful of what we have today. A trully wonderfull read.

I heartily agree with the other readers of this wonderful book who have given it 5 stars. I first read it as a teenager back in my native Wales and was fascinated by its accurate historical detail and wonderful earthy characters - I think it exlains better than any other novel of its type the eternal struggle of the Celts against their Anglo-Saxon would-be conquerors, and why we (the Celts) are so different. Had this book been written about Scotland or Ireland, I am sure it would have been made into an Oscar-winning movie by now!

This and 'Ratha's Challenge' were the two latest in the 'Ratha' series (even though this book, published in 1990, is now some 15 years old) that I never read as a child. I absolutely loved the first two books and was excited about receiving this one after a decade and a half of waiting. I did notice many similarities between Clare Bell's treatment of the 'Ratha' series and Jean M. Auel's 'Clan of the Cave Bear' & the Gear's 'Prehistoric America' series, including themes of loss, abandonment, alienation and exile.

It's beautifully written although the final battle between Thistle-Chaser & Ratha reads somewhat awkwardly. I spent most of my time reading the book alternately laughing and crying. I could feel Thistle-Chaser's righteous anger at the Clan's treatment of her watery friends, and I could fully appreciate Ratha's abrasive personality. She always carries over strongly and even Clare Bell's evolution as a writer hasn't dulled Ratha one bit.

Just as GREAT as the first

I read this series a year ago and fell in love with them the minute I picked them up. This book answers a lot of questions I wanted to know about Thistle-Chaser, and I was so happy to get it. I was 11 then but I totally understood what was going on the whole time.I own all these books now. I'm so happy my parents let me buy them even though they cost like 100 dollars. Clare bell is the best writer in the world and I hope I can read other books of hers.

Rehearsal assembles an ensemble cast to tell the story of a rock band, Raucous, that comes of age in the 1970's. The main plot focuses on the relationship between Evan, Susie, and Duncan. Ultimately, Susie pursues a relationship with Duncan, leaving Evan, her childhood friend, to wonder where he fits into her life. There are various subplots involving Kate and Mike, and the band's adventures on the road as an opening act for an established band.

Hunsaker tells an engrossing tale that takes the reader through every facet of the character's lives. There are numerous references to the 1970's that evoke the era. The characterization is "spot on," but the pacing slows the reader down. A satisfying ending leaves the reader looking forward to the sequel.

This story is a wonderful experience in memories of the 70's. The author uses countless references to names, places, song titles, bands, clothing styles, and other memorabilia to recreate the experiences we remember and loved.

And yet it is a story about personal needs, and the insecurities of young people who found their way through those uncertain years. The love of dance and music permeates the entire work of fiction, as the young people strive to turn these loves into a career, as so many did in those days.

It is a timeless story, which will speak to the heart of any age, and keep you turning pages until the very end. Like me, you will be anxiously awaiting the sequels!

When I received this book, I was thrilled to see that it was filled with full-color pictures of the condom packages. In fact, 90 percent of this book is pictures, with fascinating bits of history comprising the other 10 percent. It's very difficult to find much information on historical birth control, and this is the first book I've seen dedicated to condoms. It even includes information on "chemical prophylactics" (all I could think after reading this section was "ow, ow , ow"). A great book!

Interesting to find that this is the first book of its kind on the history of condoms and their packaging. Not only does it contain information the average person would never have guessed, it is useful to those into the history of graphic design. The tins are miniatue works of art in themselves, regardless of what they contained! The down to earth style of the text is easy on the reader as well. All in all a great bargain - the hardcover of the book in itself is worth the price of admission!

A Great Book for All Students of Rhetoric

I have used "Rhetorical Criticism" in my classes for over two years. The book is a great resource for all students of rhetoric, at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The organization of the book is it greatest asset for students of human communciation: a clear explanation of the method, followed by sample essays both by undergraduate students and expert scholars of rhetoric.

Bassically, if you have to learn about Rhetorical Criticism, this is the best book. It makes even some of the hardest methodologies such as FTA, postmodern abnd more seem easy to understand. What is even better, this bbok will show you how to apply these theories to an artifact. Good Luck.

I have used Sonja Foss' RHETORICAL CRITICISM: EXPLORATION & PRACTICES as a textbook for my Rhetorical Criticism class in the past three consecutive years. Among many other choices of textbooks, I find this one to have more strength and most suited for my students and my teaching style. First, the layout of the book is very easy for students to approach. It proceeds from traditional to current modes of rhetorical criticism, which gives the reader a sense of theoretical development in the field of rhetoric and communication. It covers both the mainstream as well as marginalized ideologies and frameworks in rhetorical formulations. Second, for each mode of rhetorical criticism, Sonja Foss offers a lucid explanation of the rhetorical concepts, the purpose of the critiques, and steps to follow in writing a critical essay. While the procedure tends to be prescriptive, it also allows great flexibility in the writing process. Students like this approach, for it gives them a sense of direction as to how to analyze sysmbols and rhetorical acts as well as allowing them to be more critical and creative. Third, what students and I like most are the sample articles following each mode of criticism. These articles, written by scholars as well as Foss' former students, help the reader understand in depth rhetorical concepts and apply theoretical models to symbolic practices and real life situations. Finally, this textbook does not only teach our students rhetorical concepts and modes of critical inquiry, it also allows students to make a close connection between rhetoric and their real life experiences. By the time we finish each mode of criticism, students are all eager to write their own essays and find the process very meaningful and illuminating. In sum, I highly recommend Sonja Foss' RHETORICAL CRITICISM: EXPLORATION & PRACTICES as a college textbook for rhetorical crititcism class. I am sure once you start using the book, you do not want to change to another one.

Rhetorical Criticism as Art and Symbolic Action

Foss entices the reader to explore a variety of dimensions of the analytic activity known as rhetorical criticism. She captures the ingenity and imagination of seeing the world through a rhetorical prism of interacting symbols. Ranging from the analysis of images to music to language instrumental in shaping political discourse, the text provides an extraordinary guide to viewing the symbols that compel our public and private interests. The strength of her approach is exemplified in the sytematic procedures she offers to begin the practice and appreciation of criticism. Novices are given clear steps to follow and veterans can find new ways of examining artifacts and generating questions based on the goals of their inquiry. I give this text my highest recommendation; Foss'examination of artifacts and reseach questions continues to generate lively classroom discussions and ignites the imaginations of students who may not be eager initially to undertake the tasks of rhetorical criticism.

A Word of Warning

K.P. Yohannan is a threat to hypocritical Christianity, but be warned before you read this book: you will not escape unscathed. With a focus on saving the lost that is both singleminded and pure of heart, K.P. rips through every pretense of the American Christian experience. He also rips through the wheat to reveal the tares. This book is a wonderful witness to a specific calling within the Christian body. I am fully convinced that he is right to expect us to aid him in his calling, but if God is using you, for His will, in any other area than missions to the lost of Asia, do not expect K.P. to acknowledge your vision or encourage you in it. Read the book; let it change your life; follow K.P.'s every footstep if that is your calling; let God shake you out of compromise and shallow Christianity. Just remember, ask God for His wisdom, that you will follow His will and not man's, not ANY man's: not yours, not mine, not K.P.'s. If you've never heard of K.P.'s Gospel For Asia, by the way, for $30 dollars a month you can support a missionary in Asia. All funds go directly to missionary support. There is no percentage taken away for administration work! You can contact them at 1-800-WIN-ASIA or www.gfa.org. Even if you don't buy the book, decide today to support one or more missionaries and make a change for God in the lives of people who have never heard the name of Christ.

Examine your priorities, Christian!

Oh my, what an incredibly thought-provoking and personally challenging book! I recently read this volume and its companion, "Revolution in World Missions". Both books issue a loving admonition to Western Christians to reevaluate their personal priorities, especially in the area of materialism. Why? Because there's a world to be won for Christ, that's why.

The other volume focuses specifically on how the American church has been overwhelmingly blessed, and should be redirecting some of those blessings to support the native evangelism movement in other countries. This book takes that fundamental message even farther, by challenging believers to examine not just their financial priorities, but their entire Christian life. What is our true measure of devotion to Christ? How much are we willing to sacrifice and risk for His sake? Are we ready to live for God's kingdom rather than our own?

Both books, but especially this one, are filled with specific principles that are ready for personal application. K.P. Yohannan, the founder of Gospel For Asia ministries, has lived what he preaches, and continues to do so. Therefore he is able to speak into our lives with godly authority. If you want to break away from a temporal mindset, develop an eternal perspective on life, and find tangible ways to be involved in growing God's kingdom among the nations, either one of these books is a great place to catch a vision.

Writing that Puts Fire Into Your Heart

There are few books that I would say really bring strong convition into my heart to the point that I simply put the book down in utter repentance as I see myself in the light of what the author is showing me from Scripture. This is one of those books.

Along with the likes of giants such as A.W. Tozer, Leonard Ravenhill, Samuel Chadwick, John Wesley, and others, K.P. Yohannan is a solid biblical exhorter calling the Church to her knees. Yohannan is not ashamed of the gospel (Romans 1:16) and he boldly proclaims the truth no matter what may happen to him.

This book will open your heart to your own self-centeredness, your wastefulness, and your pride. The book is aimed at Western Christians (particularly Americans since Yohannan now lives in the United States). The book takes aim at our focus on things that do not matter in the Church such as buildings, salaries, cars, expensive food, shelter, and clothing. Yohannan believes that the Church in the West needs to see the urgent call to world evangelism (Matt. 28:19). His writing is not for the weak or feeble minded "Christian" but for the true disciple ready for the Lord to cut his heart with His Word (Hebrews 4:12).

Overall this is an excellent work on world missions and on holy living (2 Peter 3:10-14).

A Wake-up call to Chrisitans....

I found that "The Road To Reality" is a wake-up call for Christians. Listening to Christian music, reading Christian books is OK, but we must be focused on winning souls for Jesus Christ. One thing I've learned is that I do not need to read Christian books, listen to Contemporary Christian music, etc. just because I'm a Christian. Through this book, K.P. Yohannan has taught me that I can live the life I want (as long as it goes with the Holy Bible), and win people to Christ at the same time. I am finally free from the religious books, music, etc. that once held me in confusion. I recommend this book highly.

This beautifully illustrated book is what every person who knows how to pray the rosary or would like to learn needs. The text is wonderfully written with explainations of prayers and Christian timelines in history that offer insight into these prayers. The illustrations are and added bonus and inpsire the reader to really focus on the prayers they are saying. This is a book that should be shared with friends, who like yourself may need refreshment of prayer or first time teaching of how to pray the rosary. As Catholics it is assumed that we were taught this in school, but if you are around 50 years old you may not have learned how to pray the rosary like I did not. This book will be of great value to you for a lifetime.

I bought this book for my daughter who is away at college.
It is also in our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel at St. Peter in Geneva.
I have seen many people reading it during their prayer time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. It has a complete list of references for each Mystery of the Rosary. For example, a scripture passage from the Gospel of Mark is printed for the Fourth Luminous Mystery, the Transfiguration. The chapter and verse where this same passage can be found in the Gospels of Luke and John are also noted. At the back of the book there is also a good list of Marian Organizations with their addresses and websites, a detailed bibliography and an index.

Beginning and Deepening Devotion to the Rosary

Doyle's latest book is a basic presentation on the rosary for beginners and also a rich resource for those who have a little and a lot of experience and knowledge of this prayer form. She opens with a history of the rosary, an explanation of the individual prayers, and an overview of the mysteries. It is here that she invites readers to consider the scriptural basis of the mysteries, suggesting a variety of ways they may be tied to church teaching and everyday life. She also suggests alternatives to saying the rosary daily when our prayer time is limited.

The rosary, Doyle shows us, is a many-faceted devotion that shapes and is shaped by our changing life circumstances. She uses the joyful mysteries as an example. As a child, she saw them as a sequential story from Jesus' conception to age 12. As a young mother, she identified more with Mary as a role model. Later in life her focus when reciting these mysteries shifted toward the revelation of God through the person of Jesus.

The core of the book consists of a complete rosary for each of the four mystery groups: joyful, luminous, sorrowful, and glorious. For each mystery, Doyle provides the relevant scripture passage and her own reflection. All mysteries are accompanied by annotated scans of a rosary to aid beginners and enriched with unique full-page illustrations depicting the theme. The final section contains more prayers and basic teaching tools, lists of Marian organizations, a glossary, bibliography, and index.
