Evil!Review Date: 2003-02-22
This is the first major print collection for Narbonic, a daily webcomic that's been around since mid 2000. This book represents roughly its first year. Meet the main characters: Helen Narbon, a mad scientist plotting to take over the world; Mell Kelly, her Evil Intern; Dave Davenport, the Henchman; and Artie, the superintelligent Gerbil.
The strips are funny. The stories are smart. The characters are full-fleshed, with a definite arc. This is one of the very few comic strips I read, and the only one I make sure I never miss. (I'm telling you--scientific experiments = devoted slave.)
Narbonic by Shaenon GarrityReview Date: 2003-03-04
One of Narbonic's strongest points is its incredible cast of interesting characters. Helen B. Narbon is the young mad scientist trying to run a profitable mad science laboratory, and make a name for herself, to prove she's not just a chip off her even more evil mother, Dr. Narbon. Dave Davenport is Helen's computer technician, who hates working for the forces of evil, but finds it preferable to working for Microsoft. Mell Kelly is Helen's evil intern, who's fascination with guns and explosives, keeps the other employees on their toes. RT-5478, (Artie) is a super intelligent gerbil Helen created, who considers himself the sane, rational one of the group, but is not above amusing himself by conducting unauthorized experiments on other lab animals or members of the staff. And no mad science comic would be complete without an arch rival, Professor Lupin Madblood, who Helen has a not so secret crush on.
Narbonic is mostly presented as long complex story arcs, and often reads more like a novel than a comic strip. Shaenon Garrity sketches her story lines well in advance, allowing for much richer development than you'll find most other comics.
Narbonic isn't for everyone. It requires some thought by the reader to understand the science, both real and imagined, that the artist often adds to the strip. The humor is mostly personality driven, so a good familiarity with each character is needed to get the more subtle jokes. But if you're looking for a comic strip that panders to the above mean IQ, and if you've ever wondered what REALLY happens in a mad science lab, Narbonic is for you.
In the top 10 funniest books that I have ever read!Review Date: 2003-02-25
Helen Narbon is a young mad scientist who creates things such as 300 lb. gerbils and cellular destabilizers. Along with her slacker geek henchman and homicidal intern, Helen tries to take her lab to new levels of infamy. As you can guess, things do not go smoothly.
In most works, mad scientists are two dimensional villains who are nothing more than opponents for muscle bound main characters. Narbonic documents the day to day experiences of a mad scientist's lab and portrays the characters as real people with their own insane desires and lifestyles. It is not an easy path they follow; doomsday devices don't make themselves.
This is the funniest comic that I have ever read!

Perfect baby shower gift!!!!!!Review Date: 2006-01-09
It forced me to take a look at issues I have been procastinating since becoming a parent 4 years ago. The book is VERY user friendly. It takes complex issues such as College saving, choosing guardians and summarily describes various options and scenarios that puts the legal mumbo jumbo into everyday "mommy brain" language.
I think this book is pratical and a must have for the parent library.

The chapter on the laws dealing with nursing in public and in the work environment is very important as more moms are choosing to nurse for longer periods of time.
There are many baby books out there, but none that cover these real world issues with ease and authority.

Summary of the story from the dust jacketReview Date: 2000-06-06
Redmond P. Kane, a popular Chicago newspaper columnist and Pulitzer prize winner, smokes and drinks too much, neglects his kids, enjoys a mistress, is feared and hated by his colleagues, and has shared nothing but a bed with his wife for much too long. At 53, Red is an unhappy, disgruntled cynic. But soon, all that changes. On a Chicago street corner a speeding car, almost runs him down, and a moment of divine grace - one in which God and Red's green eyed wife are somehow identified with each other - almost knocks him unconscious. An then Red';s real troubles begin. They start with evil- plan old fashioned wickedness in the person of aging politico Harv Gunther. Red has come up with evidence that links Gunther to the disappearance of a newsman 20 years earlier and the recent murder of a teenage girl, but proving it can cost Kane his career. He's almost ready to close his files, go out for a drink and forget it all. Yet since his brush with death Red finds himself inexorably drawn down the path of saintliness and driven to always do the right thing. Being a good husband to his wife Eileen is at the top of Red's list. Without realizing it, he's whistling "You're Irish and You're beautiful and dreaming of going home, taking her in his arms, and making up for all the sins of omission accumulated over 20 years of their on-again, off-again marriage. But what happens when he does? Beautiful Irish Eileen think's he's having a breakdown, just as his newsroom co-workers are sure he's finally gone over the edge. Soon, a psychiatrist is trying to have him committed. God has turned Red's whole existence upside down. Must he choose between his wife and his god? Or have they joined in a plot to try the patience of a saint. As Red probes the depths of his new emotions and renewed commitments with the help of Msgr Blackie Ryan, he also digs into the dirty business of Harve Gunther and in the process gravely endangers the lives of everyone he loves.

A Fantastic ReadReview Date: 2001-08-21
This book is terrific. I really liked the fact that it put the attack in the context of the Second World War. It gives you a good understanding of the conflicts in Europe and the Pacific and helps you to see why the attack was so pivotal. I've never been all that interested in books about war, but this one proved to be engaging and very moving. Susan Wels has done an outstanding job presenting the people and the politics behind this much-discussed event.
Informative, and interestingReview Date: 2001-05-18
The book is excellently done, encompassing informative material that allows people to understand many different aspects of the attack, and life at the base, both before and after.
If you enjoy US History, then this book is a wonderful addition to your collection. I keep going back to it to read about different aspects of not just Pearl Harbor, but World War II.
Since I am only 21 years old, it was difficult to grasp the human aspects of such an attack, but this book puts things into perspective.
I will always keep this book, not only as an informative guide, but also as a reminder of America's Darkest Day.

Can Sydney and Sam get past all the cruelty and betrayal and find their way once again, yes, they deal with the family and life that once tore them apart. Then you meet Jade and Lindsay, two women from very separate lives, thrown together by an unforeseen accident and the book just keeps getting better and better. A little long due to four stories being combined, but good reading, and a great price for the stories. Predict this will be one of the top storytellers in Lesbian lit.

Necessary Jedi resourceReview Date: 2004-12-31
Power of the Jedi remedies all of these deficiencies, adding several prestige classes that are both interesting and useful (e.g. the Jedi Healer and Weapon Master), additional light side feats and skills (including Battle Meditation and Cure Disease/Poison), and rules for managing a Jedi campaign and Jedi characters- including Force Spirits. There's also a section on Jedi equipment, including some older Jedi starships and specialized lightsabers (including the dual-phase and great saber), additional species, nasty force-wielding monsters, and a description of Jedi history and famous Jedi. The latter is particularly extensive, and includes descriptions and maps of some famous Jedi sites (e.g. the Chu'unthor).
The volume is hardcover, which largely explains the cost, and includes numerous and excellent illustrations- many of which are actual art instead of just more film captures.
If you are planning on running a Jedi campaign, or even have any light side Jedi players in a non-Force oriented campaign, this supplement is critical. I can't overstate how much depth and material it adds to the Jedi character in this game.
The Jedi's HandbookReview Date: 2003-05-08
Most players will probably be most interested in the selection of new Jedi Prestige Classes, Light Side Force skills, feats, and equipment that the book offers. But there are also sections discussing Jedi history, Jedi traditions, new equipment, and new force-sensitive creatures. There are entries on important characters, important locations, and even advice on how to run a Jedi campaign. And of course, no book on the Jedi would be complete without a discussion of Force Spirits. This is also a section discussing new races, but most of these are also in the newer Ultimate Alien Anthology.
This book has been one of the important resources in my Star Wars campaign. I've really enjoyed using the Prestige Classes. From the Jedi Healer to the powerful Jedi Weapon Master, players now have a much wider range of advancement options open to their characters. In addition many of the force-sensitive characters, creatures, and locations have already popped up in my storyline. I also found the notes on running a Jedi campaign to be very useful, for not only can they guide a GM but they can also aid players on how a Jedi should conduct himself.
However, I do have a few minor complaints. A few of the Light Side force skills, particularly Force Light and Sever Force, seem to be quite powerful. Perhaps this is because they were based on the abilities of comic-book characters, but in any case, it was a wise move that such skills may only be acquired with GM approval. I would have also preferred to see a much more in-depth history section, particularly as it pertains to the Tales of the Jedi storyline. Finally, I felt that the maps for some of the important locations were fairly inadequate.
However, as I noted earlier, these were minor complaints.
Overall, I found this to be an outstanding addition to my Star Wars campaign. I use it often, and it is likely that I will continue to do so for some time to come. Whether you're the GM of a campaign with Jedi in it, or whether you're a player wanting to explore the possibilities of a Jedi character, I'd recommend this book as a solid investment.

The book also shows some of the other functions of the Jedi Order and some races also view it. I only wished that it had come out after the Knights of the Old Republic game so that the Jedi Sentinal PrC could've been included but then again, that's just me.
Other than a few minor issues with the rules, Power of the Force is a great book to own and a *MUST* if you play a jedi in any era of Star Wars.

Maybe the best book on the technique of tying?Review Date: 2000-05-10
Like most tyers, I have dozens of books; there's Marinaro, Kauffman, Proper, and on and on, but this one book probably taught me more about how to actually tie than any other book. Best is a production tyer, but the same techniques he uses to tie a hundred dozen of some pattern are just as useful for the fisherman who needs a dozen assorted flies for a weekend trip.
The descriptions are marvelously clear and the photos reveal every detail. This book and a good vise are probably the first two things a beginner should buy.
As good as it gets.Review Date: 1999-03-15
