This book is a necessity in a time when people and their children are living longer and aging together. It is good information for both the general population and mental health professionals. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with older adults and their families and to those who find themselves in this difficult family dynamic.

Loved this book. Helped me tremendously with understanding family dynamics - and the fact that we must accept our own aging and that of our elders as a given. I have recommended it to all my patients who say they, too, love it. It is a book for everyone

This is a wonderful "hands-on" text that delineates and clarifies the experiences of both the aging parents and family members, particularly the care-givers. It is clear and sensitively-written and every aspect from diagnosis to planning and placement is comprehensively presented with excellent examples demonstrating "the tightrope that familes and providers often have to walk." Focus on the caregivers and their need to maintain a balanced life adds a critically-important dimension often overlooked in eldercare books. A must read for everyone with aging parents.

Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (10/07)

Drs. Miriam K. Aronoson and Marcella Bakur Weiner have written "Aging Parents, Aging Children" for the average person faced with a care-giving challenge. The book is filled with practical examples and dramatic scenarios to help the reader identify with others who have, or are experiencing, similar problems or challenges.

Early chapters include helpful information pointing out diversity among families, differences in philosophy, beliefs, personality traits, and family dynamics. These all play a part in the approach chosen to provide the best possible care.

As changes in physical health, emotional stability, or mental faculties, take their toll, it is important to begin an assessment process. This will help the family or caregiver size up the current condition through diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and aftercare needs. Excellent charts and tables provide an overview and checklist for this assessment and setting up a plan of care. Once this has been done immediate concerns, logistics, legal issues, and finances all come into play.

I especially appreciated the chapter dedicated to discussing dementia and Alzheimer's disease and the suggestions for placement versus home care. Symptoms, causes, and treatments are all considered in this informational and helpful presentation.

A concern often overlooked is the care and welfare of the caregiver. This chapter is of particular importance to everyone reading the book. Self-care is an important part of the process of renewal, nurture, and balance. The final chapter titled "Demystifying the Maze" is a helpful glossary of important elder care language.

Internationally acclaimed as experts in the area of elder care, Aronson and Weiner, collaborate to bring the reader insight, confidence, compassion and hope in caring for their loved one. The authors assist the reader faced with navigating the maze of systems and services, the challenge of relationships, resource limitations, and expectations of family and the importance of self help.

Thorough in presentation, written in an easy-to-understand style, "Aging Parents, Aging Children" is a practical prescription for an escalating pandemic of eldercare challenges.

Mr. McDonald offers a grounded, intelligent snapshot of life on Wall Street and beyond, peopled by a variety of memorable characters. Perhaps surprisingly, given the Wall Street setting, the older personalities are drawn with particular flair and heart. The protagonist, too, emerges as vivid and real: more someone you know than just a character in a book. A fine first novel.

The following is a reference for the "Altar Boy."

For a first novel, Mr. McDonald did a very nice job. Good characterizations and very believable dialogue. The story line was good. He writes about what he knows, that being the world of finance. I read his bio....what is a mud engineer?

I received this book when I took a breastfeeding class at my birth hospital. I found it to be clear and concise, friendly and easy-to-understand, but quite repetitive. It seems that each chapter contains the same (useful) information, just in a different order... sometimes exact phrases are repeated. Beyond that, the book is a short, easy read with practical information on everything from getting started to storing pumped milk.

I actually got this book free from a Breastfeeding class I took, and have found it to be the most easy to use/read book - especially compared to the other 2 books I actually bought. I feel it is straightforward with facts instead of opinions, and a great reference for when I had some breastfeeding problems and concerns.

One thing not mentioned, and I haven't seen it any other books, is how the number of feedings on average reduces after the first month - and 8 feedings isn't always required.

I was given this book at the hospital while taking a breastfeeding class. Even though I felt that I knew it all, when it came to actually breastfeeding my daughter I was clueless and in tears for the first week. This book provided me with the info I needed to keep on breastfeeding. I successfully breastfed for 8 months!

This book answered questions for me I had posed to my OB/GYN but, for some reason, he couldn't communicate the answers to me in as concise a fashion as this book! I think this book is a wonderful resource. It's a fairly quick read and seems to address all the questions/problems you may face while breastfeeding.

First, thank you for taking the time to read my work. Writing it was invaluable to me and I hope that reading it will be the same for you.
Second, if you do purchase this novel, please purchase the second edition with the fabulous cover that actually matches the content of the book. That is the black cover with the sword and dragon pendant on the front. The editing of this edition is of a much higher quality as well.
I hope that you enjoy your purchase and your reading.

And So It Begins. . . is the most entertaining book that I've read since Stephen R. Donadlson's Gap series. The characters are real, even when the situations would allow for simpler characters. The premise, a twenty-something girl is transported to another world to save that land, is not new; but the author breaks tradition when you expect it least. I highly recommend it.

And So It Begins... is an excellent novel. The interaction of the characters is extremely brilliant; with a skill much like Oscar Wild, K.M. Outten delivers the characters' dialog with fluid grace. The story centers around the, unsuspecting protagonist, Roxanne, and her impact on the chance to salvage a land that is on the verge of being submerged under dark control. The novel follows a traditional fantasy style of Good VS Evil, but continually breaks from it with realistic themes, like the political struggle among the Lords in an attempt to promote their style of magic (similar to religious figureheads throughout history) and the allusions made to class separation, as well as feelings of superiority seen among the most "pure" group, the fairies. All of these elements, viewed through the eyes of a fed up college student, work to make the story fresh and entertaining. The fact that this is K.M. Outten's first piece of literature leads me to wait in anticipation for her next book.

Passionate and strong!

As you read this novel you are immediately struck by the power and the strength of the characters. They interact on a truly human and realistic level... ignoring the trappings of formality normally forced upon us by authors. The freedom of thought and direction given to the characters makes the book feel almost as though it were a history of events rather than the imagination of a human. This author has a rare command of the human mind and of the English language. Read this book.

There can be few things more enriching, entertaining, and inspiring than merrily wending one's way through the fascinating memoirs of this legendary journalist. Ms. Ellerbee can now be seen on her marvelous news program for children on Nickelodeon, which is one of the greatest programs in the history of television. Ms. Ellerbee's thrilling story is sure to deeply touch all who read it, evoking both tears and laughter, often simultaneously. This is one of the greatest books in the history of the world, and should be on every required reading list in every institution of learning in the world.

There are some books that should never be resigned to the dustbin and this is one of them. The message is timeless and, despite the humor, frightening. Ms. Ellerbee's wisdom is needed more today than it was back in 1988.

Review Date: 2002-09-15
Direct, honest, and brilliantly written, Ellerbee's masterwork gives the reader an inside look into the world of broadcast journalism. Her 80's program NBC News Overnight was a unique vehicle for intelligent reporting and videography. It was the last show of its kind on network news TV which, if anything, has gotten worse since the writing of this book. When Ellerbee's Nickelodeon children's programs are more intelligently written than most of the so called "adult" news programs on TV, that's scary. It is unfortunately the case.

I've probably read this book a dozen times from cover to dog-eared cover; my paperback copy is literally falling apart! I still open it sometimes just to read a couple of pages from the middle, and I'm always entertained by Ellerbee's wit.

Wit: a combination of rational intelligence and humour. Ellerbee displays both in abundance, and her writing style is pitch-perfect. She's worked in network news long enough to have seen all of it's strength and weaknesses, and long enough to have lived through one-too-many comical misadventures. Some of her anectodal experiences are downright hilarious:

Stealing Reagan's golf cart for a joyride. Spying on a button manufacturer from a rooftop across the street (to learn before the competing networks who'll be chosen vice president for a presidential campaign). Getting unintentionally stuck in the middle of a homecoming parade for the Iran hostages. Using dinner trays to "surf" down the aisle of a flying airplane. A rubber duck on the set. A "thing and a thing." And so it goes...

There are also some suprising revelations, such as Ellerbee's confession to a back-alley abortion, and her discovery that Ohio didn't become a state until 1954!

Read this book and be entertained... and simoultaneously enlightened about the field of broadcast journalism.

Angela the Upside-Down Girl is a revelation. Emily Hiestand is one of Robert Frost's true poets, "one upon whom nothing is lost." As she trains an eye of the rarest perception on the world we thought we knew, we discover the heart of light within ordinary and not-so-ordinary things. I marvel at her scope: her Weltyesque Aunt Nan Dean; her eloquent witness to the power of faith and community at Union Baptist Church; her love affair with automotive neon, which manages (as Emerson never could) to be both transcendental and funny; and, of course, there's Angela, whose gravity-defying grace can be seen as a figure for the whole book. But perhaps most engaging of all is the voice of our guide--Hiestand herself--the unifying principle through the book's many travels, wise, witty, shimmering in its clarity, a wonderful companion.

I knew Emily for a very short time when I lived in Boston. She and my sister were friends, along with a group of people whose lives centered around a triple decker on Wendell Street.

A new book from Emily is like a long letter. I get to catch up on her life and comings and goings. I always feel sheepish about not staying in touch when I'm through with it. She writes such beautiful and thoughtful things, I think. I really need to write her back.

Reading her prose is exactly like having a conversation with her. I can hear her light, sweet voice as if I'm at a reading, and can summon her laugh in my mind's ear too.

It's impossible for me to separate my acquaintance with Emily from her work, but I will say I'm always astounded with her descriptions and way with words. She is at once erudite and approachable, and her work is always informed by both these things. Being a poet, Emily brings thoughtful cadence to her essays, and very often I will read them outloud to myself.

For those of you who don't know Emily personally, you will after you read this book, and what's more, you'll want to know her better. You'll also learn that New England watersheds are not only interesting but epic in their own way, and that stories are told in the details.

Thanks Emily. I'm doing quite well and think of you often.

[An] enchanting new book of essays.... Many personal essayists today try to capture our interest by being confessional but run the risk of revealing, like clumsy strippers, what we'd really rather not see. Hiestand has taken the more unusual risk of writing about the quotidian, and produced a tour de force. "Oooouuuweee!" as her cousin Bill would say. What a good book this is. --Boston Sunday Globe Book Review

Angela the Upside-Down Girl is about how to live creatively, see life through an artist's eye. With a subversive sense of humor and a wicked ability to pierce convention, [Hiestand] takes us on her journey to discover a meaningful sense of place in a chaotic world. Her place turns out to be North Cambridge, which she describes with the freshness and originality of Joyce in Dublin...

Angela the Upside-Down Girl reveals Emily Hiestand's exceptional talents which include an artist's eye for color and form, a cu! ltural anthropologist's ability to get people to tell their stories, and a poet's facility to express what is felt but not seen. --Cambridge Chronicle

Rich, revealing, and often hilarious... This book travels between only two places...but it travels so deeply into each place, both their pasts and their presents, that you come away from it feeling enlightened and enticed, and ready to hop on the next train heading north or south. --Hope Magazine

If I could give this book more than five stars, I would! After dealing with the pain of Al-Kitaab for years, I was relieved when I began studying out of this book. Dr. Bassam Frangieh's Anthology of Arabic Literature, Culture, and Thought is an indispensable tool for the advanced student of Arabic. Since the advanced student expects to be able to converse with educated Arabs, he or she must be familiar with all the great names of classical Arabic literature and, with very few exceptions, the names with representative texts are all here: Imru' al-Qays, Ibn al-Muqaffa (whose "Kalila wa Dimna" is a brilliant marriage of Machiavelli's "The Prince" and "Aesop's Fables"), Al-Jahiz, Ibn Jinni, Abu Nuwas, Al-Mutanabbi, Ibn Rushd, Ibn Sina, Al-Hallaj, al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiyya, and Ibn Khaldun. More importantly, Dr. Frangieh has devoted almost half of the book to modern Arab poets, novelists, and critics. Any student conditioned to seeing the Arab-Islamic world through the lens of 9-11 and the issues of radical or political Islam will find enlightening and refreshing the selections by Adonis, Hisham Shirabi, Sadiq Jalal al-`Azm and their respective secular critiques of Arab society. Mahmud Amin al'Alim's "The Arabic Novel" and Idwar Kharrat's "Three Faces of Ghalib Halasah" will provide the student whose native language is English with exemplary models of the modern, expository styles of Arabic expression. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this collection is the heightened sense the student gains of the expressive and metaphorical potential of Arabic. For the student accustomed to associating the "poetic" in Arabic with the rich and florid classical style, Nizar Qabbani's "Arabian Love Poems" will introduce the student to the poet's modern metaphorical style that in a sense recaptured the secret of Abu Nuwas-that metaphysical and abstract truths are best expressed through creative juxtapositions of the immediate and sensible. All the selections in Dr. Frangieh's anthology are no more than 4-5 pages, easily readable in an evening's study, and will send the reader running to find the originals.

This book is exactly how I rated it, 5 stars. For a student studying Arabic, it's the best way to expand your vocabulary. All of the literature in the book is in Arabic with a glossary after the passage to help the student learn new words.

As for the diverse material covered in the Anthology, it has everything from Jahilliya love poetry to the Prophet's (pbuh) last sermon to certain excerpts from Andalusian and Medieval Sufis such as Ibn Rushd and Hallaj. It even covers some stories from Kalila wa Dimna.

The attached CD with the book is awesome as you can read along with the speaker to learn the proper pronounciation and rhythym of certain poetry. If you are tired of reading the same old Al-Kitaab part I/II/or III and you want to finally test and use your Arabic skills, get this book.

An awesome buy and highly recommended!!

To a student who has used in one form or another the Elementary Modern Standard Arabic book for more than 2 years, and who appreciates its usefulness as a grammar book, it simply cannot rival Frangieh's new book in terms of sheer challenge and enjoyment. Frangieh seeks to inform the reader not only of the language, but of literary works that have been pivotal in Arab culture. The works chosen span an inredible range in time and style, include the modern novel, as well as pre-Islamic poetry, and energize the reader with its invitation to discover the deftness and clarity of some of the language's most accomplished authors.

I rate it 4.5 stars only because this book is way too big to carry to class--it's like putting a baby in your backpack. On top of the syllabi you have to lug around, the weight is ridiculous. In terms of the actual content, it's an excellent desktop resource. All drugs are organized by disease state. Literally, the drug Bible (tissue paper pages and all). I recommend it for at home/pharmacy use only, otherwise you might need a forklift.

Applied Therapeutics is a very detailed, thorough, and informative compilation of assorted health care matters.

The text is easy to read and the numerous sample cases studies in each chapter ensures that the reader fully understands and is able to apply the information presented. It is also an excellent method to reinforce the enormous amount of information health care providers are presented with in daily practice.

The free CD-ROM (which you must request on their website with a coupon code attached in the back of the book) is a very portable version of this hefty textbook.

A word of caution: This is defintely not an "introductory" book. A little working knowledge of biology, pharmacology, and disease states is a must.

Although we did not chose to hire an Au Pair at this time, the advice in this book was invaluable in helping us decide what type of person we wanted coming to our home daily, what questions to ask and what we could and could not expect from in home childcare.

The sample calendar's, task lists, and operating procedure forms were great for getting organized before the big day. We will definately review this book again when we are ready for a true Au Pair.

Au Pairing Up is a terrific resource for anyone even considering the Au Pair option. You will get candid insight into both the pluses and minuses of the Au Pair option; a lot of great information on how to select an Au Pair; and many ideas on how to get the most from your Au Pair. Perhaps most of all you benefit from the author's, Ruth Liebermann's, extensive (20+ year) experience with Au Pairs and her very insightful comments. While the book is extremely extensive and comprehensive I also found it easily accessible--the oversize format, the concise wording and the interesting layout all help. I'd highly recommend this book to people considering getting an Au Pair, approaching the interview stage, or even people who already have an Au Pair and want to maximize the experience.

Invaluable - you won't be disappointed

If you are thinking of hiring an au pair or even if you already have one - you simply must buy this book! This book has been an incredible help to me in creating a comfortable and effective environment for our family and our au pair.

When we hired our au pair we didn't know what we were doing at all. We purchased this book after we already had our au pair. But after getting the book, we realized there was so much incredible information on the process of hiring an au pair (that we had no clue about), that next time we would definitely follow Ms. Liebermann's advice in this area. While we were perhaps lucky with our hire, I can see how following her recommendations would greatly aid in getting the "right" person into your home.

I like things done a certain way for my daughter but I wasn't always sure how to get my points across to our au pair. Again, Ms. Liebermann's book outlined so many great ways to increase the communication levels between us that it has really made it smooth sailing around here. Communication is key - it can be difficult having someone new living in your home - this book makes it possible to have a great and rewarding au pair experience for both your family and your au pair. I knew I wanted some sort of "manual" to help explain things but I didn't know how to go about it - it was great to get this book and have an "operating manual" already done.

Ms. Liebermann's speaks from years of experience in this area, and it shows. Her recommendations are excellent and spot on. I highly recommend this book.

I have given this book to many new mothers, some having second and third babies. It is universally well received. Even for the family that has no intention of hiring an au pair or access to an au pair service, this is an excellent resource. The how-tos and list of questions to ask any child care provider are worth more than the price of this book. The CD works great for today's families. It's quite easy to read and well organized.
Au Pair companies and other provider agencies could use it as a registration incentive/gift. Early Childhood Education at the high school, community college, and university level needs this resource included in the curriculum.
It is wonderful!

Where was this book six months ago when my husband and I were considering getting an au pair?? This book does it all! From the application process to choosing an applicant to preparing for your au pair's arrival to making the relationship successful, this book covers everything you need to make the process as smooth as possible.

If you are just starting to think about what type of childcare best suits your family, read this book. If you already have an au pair and are struggling to make it work, read this book. If you have an au pair and things are going well but you want to make the situation even better, read this book!

It has everything you need and you won't have to start developing forms and a "standard operating procedure" from scratch - like I did!

Had I ever received my order, I could have read the book I paid for and shared my thoughts about it with other customers. TZM Books has never replied to my e-mails, and Amazon has been less than helpful in rectifying the situation. Be wary doing business with either; they'll take your money and waste your time.

I bought this book for my kids the year it came out. They loved it and treasure the memory of every bit of the story.

No matter how many times they read it or what their reading level was they felt for the bear, suffered his frustration, ached for his situation and laughed at the people who could not see a bear for being a bear.

The pictures tell their own story. A child doesn't even have to be a reader to appreciate the situations the bear encounters. Among the more memorable are the one where the bear is looking at a bear skin rug, the look on his face is something that is hard to forget, in a series of pictures the bear works his way up the corporate ladder, each person in the series is more expensively dressed until finally he meets the biggest boss of all... who has a hole in his shoe!

I've used this book to teach about social class, capitalism and the construction of self. The real beauty of this book lies in its accessibility... the youngest children hear the story and root for the bear, older kids find themselves seeing injustice being done, those more politically aware are exposed to environmentalism and issues about how the world works. Adults find so many messages, about being who you really are, social injustice and ultimately freedom.

I can see why therapists use it. I can also see why someone might find it subversive. But it is delciously subversive in the way a great dessert is, satisfying to the mind and soul in a way that only the greatest books are.

A lesson for all

This is a great book. It is loosly based on "The Bear Who Wasn't" which is widely available in paperback. It is lovingly illustrated and talks about being "real" even when the world won't allow it.

I had never seen it before I was in therapy, which is where I was introduced to it. By the time I could afford to get a copy, it was out of print, and considering the prices on places like Barnes and Noble. com, people really don't want to part with their copes

I read most of the reviews of this "classic" children's book. My parents read this book to me when I was a kid in the mid-to-late 1940's. I bought an edition for our son in the 1980's. I am now trying to buy two more copies for my grand-nephews. Forget the the politics & philosophy. This is purely a treat to read and to have!

I just received a copy of the book on the weekend as a 30th birthday present from my Dad, who used to read this book to my brother and I when we were growing up. It is easily my favorite picture book from my childhood. My Dad didn't want to part with his copy of it, one of his more prized possessions, so he tracked down one for me on Amazon.

In my opinion, the book is far more than a simple children's book. It is a work of art, combining a multilayered story that comments on industrialism, identity, and the world of work, with astonishing drawings by Jorg Muller.

If folks know of other works of Jorg Muller or Jorg Steiner (the author), I'd love to hear from you at paul at hainsworth dot com.
