An Excellent reference for beginning through advanced painters.

Everything needed to paint lovely floral watercolors: Selection of paper and paint colors; step-by-step sequence of demonstrations along with samples of completed "floral portraits".

If I were to own only one book of floral watercolors, this would be it!

About the BEST of the BEST Watercolor Instruction Books

This book is on the top of my list of books I would recommend to learn to paint and draw flowers in watercolor, and I have a huge number of watercolor painting books to compare it to. It is also great for learning basic watercolor techniques, as the beginning chapter cover everything a beginner would need to know, but it is a book for watercolorists of all levels.

After the basic techniques and materials chapters which are outstanding in themselves, the student is given 26 beautiful flowers to paint, each with detailed instructions, and sometimes close-up views of exactly where the detail such as masking fluid goes, or where the next glaze goes, etc.. Each exercise gives the exact pallet you will need. The instructions are excellent.

I consider myself still a beginner, but was amazed at how beautiful my first flower turned out, and credit most of it to the teaching methods in this book. This book is among the very BEST OF THE BEST to learn from and also to enjoy the beauty of the paintings. I can't think of anything I didn't like about this book. It's tops in every way.

Not all artists can teach, but Adelene Fletcher is definitely a teacher. One thing I like about this book is she tells you all the colours you will need to do each flower in the book, and then gives you some very good instructions in painting them. I have done the first two flowers in the book and thoroughly enjoyed her method of teaching. I am now looking to buy her Trees and Foliage A-Z book but Amazon cannot get it and the other suppliers I've looked at so far do not ship to Canada.

I read a book called The Bald Bandit by Ron Roy. It's about a bandit who robs the Green Lawn Savings Bank. The three detectives (Dink, Josh, Ruth Rose) solved the mystery. When a private detective named Reddy came to look for the videotape the three detectives decided to help him. Reddy said if they found the videotape they would earn a hundred bucks.

My favorite part of the book was when Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose got the videotape and they watched the tape and they noticed it was Reddy who robbed the bank. When Reddy was at Dink's house ready to get the video, Dink hid it and gave him a tape of soccer. Ruth Rose sneaks into her house and calls the police. I think the thief was pretty smart.

I think the book was a perfect fit for me because I love reading mystery books. When I read this book at home I can't stop reading it until I finish.

THE BEST BOOK FOR INSIGHT INTO THE UFO PROBLEMS. WHAT SCARES ME ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT'S HOLDING BACK INFORMATION OF THIS KIND FROM THE PUBLIC IS THAT WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY OF THE KIND THE ETS OBVIOUSLY HAVE WOULD GIVE EARTH'S GOVERNMENTS THE POWER AND MONEY TO ESTABLISH A WORLD GOVERNMENT. WE HAVE JUST HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF AN ATTEMPT AT WORLD GOVERNMENT FROM ADOLPH HITLER AND I HAVE HOPES OF USING THAT HORROR AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THE OTHER ASPECT OF THIS THAT WORRIES ME IS THAT A HOSTILE EXTRATERRISTERIAL SPECIES VERY FORWARD IN EVOLUTION COULD TREAT US AS WE TREATED THE INDIANS WHEN WE COLONIZED AMERICA.

The title of the book describes the status of classified information on UFOs:"Exempt from Disclosure." The record is unambiguous, powerful, and almost unarguable that there are many aspects of UFO or flying saucer reports that have been classified over the years, and this is the first book that provides enough detail to convince many that we have had a deeply covert intelligence involvement with the UFO topic from the beginning.

A wealth of inside information
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-02
Robert Collins' new book goes places where few UFO books have gone before. The book is not the most useful for beginners, for they may find themselves overwhelmed within minutes (the subject is labyrinthine, and this book delves into the farthest reaches) - but Collins fully acknowledges this in his introduction. Rather, it's primarily written for those devotees and enthusiasts who already have a fairly sophisticated understanding of the phenomenon and its complex history.

This assumption made about the background knowledge of the reader, the book then launches into a fascinating smorgasbord of inside information, supported by extensive documentation and "deep" sources.

The book documents the famous "Aviary" - a group of insiders known by code names such as Falcon, Condor, Raven, and so on - and explores the history of various efforts to release the mass of top secret information which has never yet been made available to the public. All such efforts have so far met with failure, for a number of reasons. Political climate is one, and at the same time there have been differing opinions within the intelligence community about how to deal with this monstrous problem. Disinformation - the deliberate obfuscation of facts with fanciful additives - is rife, this being a favored (and effective) ploy of intelligence agencies: the waters become so muddied that reports are inconsistent and no-one knows any more what to think or believe.

There is an extensive section written by Richard Doty (the Aviary's "Falcon"), who in this first addition is listed by Collins as being a co-author. This provides - besides much else - fascinating information about the three extraterrestrial "guests" of the US government over a period of four decades, known as EBE-1, EBE-2, and EBE-3. Doty chronicles an interview with EBE-2 at which he was present, at Los Alamos National Laboratories on 5 March 1983.

There is also much detail about the location of secret installations within Air Force bases - supported by an extensive collection of maps and diagrams - and an intriguing section about the notorious "Men in Black". Yet another section features a message exchange with an anonymous Los Alamos scientist who explains, referring to the physics of the flying disks, that "You are assuming that ET crafts are made with our technology... Many years ago, we made that same mistake and it took us several years to correct the mistake and start fresh from the drawing board. "Their" technology is nothing similar to ours. We do not utilize our physics or chemistry in a comparison analysis. We started from scratch and learned their principles of dynamics, physics, etc... The ET craft was manufactured using ET technology. This craft was built many years before we developed flight. They used a different physics principle, that we still don't fully understand. We cannot duplicate the craft's material. We have nothing similar to that material on Earth..."

All this, and more. I've only touched on the parts of the book that interested me. If you already know a lot about the subject, buy this book, and you'll know a lot more. Furthermore, at Collins' website [...] - or here at Amazon - you can buy a CD which contains a wealth of information beyond what is supplied in this book. This reader has nothing to gain by promoting this! Just wanting to help make this extraordinary and well documented information available to all.

Tell the truth, Secrecy is counterproductive

Review Date: 2005-10-31
Many books have been written on the subject of a suppression of smoking-gun evidence regarding UFOs and extraterrestrial visitation to Earth. Exempt from Disclosure, written by two retired United States Air Force officers, Robert Collins and Richard Doty, offers a new perspective in that senior American government officials alleged to be involved in managing the cover-up or having full awareness of recovered alien artefacts are named.

Collins and Doty have also taken the bold step of including what appear to be highly classified Top Secret documents which corroborate, at least in part, the statements regarding an extraterrestrial energy device attributed to ex CIA Director Richard Helms. The possibility that the American government has indeed recovered crashed UFOs and has been secretly attempting to duplicate the craft and its propulsion system is given some credence by these documents although the author's do not appear to be able to fully endorse their authenticity.

If we accept Collin's and Doty's contention that UFOs have been the subject of secret ongoing study for the last 58 years, then they make an understated case that the intense secrecy surrounding UFOS has in fact become counterproductive. The evidence supplied by the authors leaves the reader in no doubt that vast sums of tax-payer dollars have been used in what appears to be a largely futile attempt to recreate the craft.

The case for abandoning secrecy in this area and throwing open the doors to any and all scientists who wish to attempt to crack the mystery should now be encouraged. Six decades is more than enough time to produce at least elementary conclusions but this does not seem to have happened. The people who are managing these contentious areas of research would do well to reconsider their bizarre policy of denial and secrecy and begin the long-overdue process of informing the world that we are not alone and that help is needed from all countries in order to understand these materials and energy sources.

I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this. All I knew what that I knew nothing about radio. This little comic has changed that however. With its easy to read format and great illustrations I was able to understand the fundamentals of radio production in about an hour. I'm not going to be producing any award winning series anytime soon but I will be able to mumble an 'affirmative' grunt here and there should the topic ever arise in a conversation. Overall, it was worth the money. I gave it a 4 star rating rather than a 5 only because I wish there was more of it. If you want to know the absolute basics of production then buy it.

An excellent piece of work.

Jessica Abel and Ira Glass have done an admirable job of explaining the basics of what it takes to do radio reportage and story telling in a novel format, mainly that of a comic. Inexpensive, easy to read and even easier to understand, the book gave me a clearer idea of what it talks to engage in this field and how to do it properly. While it is by no means a substitute for hands-on or field experience, I was able to glean enough from this to know that I would like to do this full time!

The team at "This American Life" tell stories as well as anyone in the media. This book was recommended to me during a seminar on multimedia storytelling for photographers, so its value is not limited to those who only want to do radio. It's a comic book, but not shallow. Anything but. Ira Glass and his team at Chicago Public Radio go through how a particular week's show, Do-Gooders, was produced as well as basic tip for anyone wanting to do documentary audio work. This is a little gem.

Having read "Radio", I can say it is packed with information not only on the production, but on how to tell a story. My son is a natural conversationalist, I asked him how does he put together his stories. He said he didn't know and I suggested wouldn't it be cool to understand how the dynamics/mechanics of storytelling work. He simply shrugged his shoulders and said, "I dunno". He works for me in the summer and I told him I would pay him to read this book in lieu of working. He liked that idea. He read the story in about an hour. Now he has the rhyme to the reason. This comic is a great read and should be required for any collegiate types.

This thesaurus is divided into two main sections: Roget's style thematic index and a dictionary style alphabetized index.

The thematic index is divided into six areas, covering less than 20 pages:

Abstract Concepts
Spatial Concepts
Physical and material Concepts
Human Intellect
Human Personality and Actions
Human Emotions and Beliefs

For researching ideas, this first part is invaluable.

However, the vast majority of the time, I use the extraordinarily convenient dictionary style index, covering nearly 900 pages. It's easy - if you need a new word to cover the same tired old word you've been using, just look it up. For example, here's the entry for the common word, friend:

Friend, n. 1. [a person with whom one has mutual attachment] - Syn. Companion, intimate, confidant, comrade, familiar, schoolmate, playmate, best friend, close friend, roommate, bedfellow, fellow, fast friend, bosom friend, boon companion, mate alter ego, other self, soul mate, crony*, buddy*, sidekick*, bosom buddy*, homeboy*, homegirl*. Ant. Foe, ENEMY, stranger.

2. [An ally] Syn. Compatriot, confrere, colleague; see associate (in boldface)

3. [A patron] -- Syn. Supporter, backer, advocate, sympathizer; see patron (in boldface) 1.

Make friends with (in bold face) - Syn. Befriend, strike up a friendship with, buddy up to*; see associate (in boldface) 1.

When a word is in bold face, it means that the word is included in the thesaurus and may have other suggestions for you. The number after the bold face tells where in the entry to look for suggestions. The noun form of the word friend has three numbers referring to different definitions. An asterisk after a word, according to the thesaurus, indicates "archaic, colloquial, dialect, slang, or other unusual usage." The N after the entry word refers to its part of speech; in this case, the word friend is a noun. Syn. refers to synonym, or a word that is similar in meaning. Ant. refers to antonym, or a word that is opposite in definition.

The very back of the book has a small handful of pages called the Supplementary Word Lists, which include endings of words, such as -cide, --cracy, --iac, --mancy, and so forth and gives a list of words with that particular suffix. For example, for -iac, the listings includes words such as insomniac, kleptomaniac, and paranoiac, among many others.

In short, this is an excellent reference for a beginner (my ten-year-old frequently uses this thesaurus) as well as a seasoned professional. The organization is superb and it is easy to read and to follow. It's nearly impossible not to find the word that you seek!

You've Got Manners is a delightful, creative book which makes learning manners a fun and interesting "game" for children of all ages. It can be used as a learning tool whether at the dinner table, eating out or traveling, and all family members can participate. I love the author's use of illustrations and vivid primary colors which are instrumental in keeping a child's attention. The author also cleverly incorporated another learning tool, the alphabet. I can unequivocally recommend You've Got Manners for every family's library.

I ordered this book for my young granddaughter who, at nearly 3 years of age, is ready to consider simple discussion of table manners. I am generally delighted with the book and believe it is one that can grow with a child, having applications even into adulthood.

I was startled, however, to find lie-lay errors on pp. 7 and 55. I also note numerous other small changes that would greatly improve a future edition. For example, some pages are written in the imperative, some are written in the declarative....some are in the third person, some are in the second person, and at least one (p. 44) slips into the first person plural. In addition, frequent use of unnecessary quotation marks is distracting.

The book fills an important niche in a child's library, but it is limited by the above weaknesses. I do not mean to be critical....I have corrected pp. 7 and 55 in my edition and will enjoy this charmingly illustrated book with my granddaughter. You could do the same.

Ever since childhood, my favorite comics were Franco-Belgian. Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke and last but not least Spirou. As a kid, I read all the Spirou books in French and I thought they were amazing.
This book was written by Andre Franquin, the first artist to turn spirou into a major success. This book was drawn in the 60's, and shows the battle between Spirou and Fantasio against a maniacal inventor named Zorglub. This book is considered as one of Franquin's finest by most Spirou fans. It is a must read. I hope that someday more Spirou books will be available to the English reading public, especially those drawn by Franquin and by Tome and Janry.

I've read all Spirou's books 15 years ago and definitely Franquin's ones are unbeatable. Unfortunately you won't find the same imagination and humour inside the other authors'books. Nowadays, you only find Franquin's books in french. Why, if they have the other not so cool books print in english and portuguese, and probably spanish, italian..? I used to find those books in portuguese in Portugal's bookstores back then. Kim Thompson, please do us a favor. Translate all the other Franquin's books to english.I wish my kids will have the same joy of reading Spirou as I had...and Tintin, Asterix, and Blake & Mortimer. Real, flesh and bone heroes, full of humour and wit.

Z is for Zorglub was the 15th Spirou book Franquin made. He then left the comic to focus on his own character Gaston la Gaffe. In Z is for zorglub we'll meet the mad scientist zorglub who wants to dominate the world. However, there is one spirou book even better than this one: Le dictateur et le champignon: In which Spirou and Fantasio must battle Fantasios evil cousin Zantafio (whom is the archvillain of the series)

I have around thirty of the hardcover Spirou and Fantasio graphic novels, in Spanish, from when I vacationed in Spain as a boy. As a college student now, I look back on those days fondly, and these graphic novels have aged extremely well. This French comic series are adventure stories similar to those found in the more famous Tintin books by Herge. However, in my opinion, Spirou and Fantasio are far superior...more whimsical and imaginative (the character Marsupilami originated in the series' pages before being bought by Disney). Spirou and Fantasio travel the world, toppling dictatorships, fighting mad scientists, traveling to the future and the past, and stopping organized crime rings. A few years back, a series called El Pequeno Spirou (or Little Spirou), spinned off of the Spirou and Fantasio comics. Little Spirou stories are one page comic strips (like those that appear in the Sunday paper) full of hilarious lowbrow (and award-winning) humor. The main character is Spirou as a child, and Fantasio, unfortunately, doesn't appear in the stories. These too are worth getting. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have stated, it's hard finding these graphic novels outside of France (and Spain). Hopefully, as with Asterix and Tintin, these books will someday reach avid young readers everywhere.

Classic French comic filled with mordant wit and adventure

I read all the Spirou stories as a child when we lived in Belgium, and then afterward when we had moved back to the US. In the 60s, they were serious rivals of Herge's Tintin for the hearts of European kids. For some reason (undoubtedly some financial or distribution reason I'm unaware of) they have yet to catch on in America. Hopefully, the American printing of Z Is For Zorglub, one of the more fantastical, even outlandish, of the Spirou & Fantasio adventures, will kindle an interest. My daughter is a convert and I'm beginning to teach her French so she can read my old Spirous, which I've kept all these years.

This is very well done. Even a seasoned quilter can pick up tips or revist information they learned years ago and find useful information. I like the books format, the pictures and illustrations are helpful and clear. I'd consider this to be along the lines of a quilter's encyclopedia.

I use the internet a great deal and it's really nice to come across a 'book' that is so well done & have it on hand in my art room. Nicely done. CJ

I had borrowed this book from the local library and could tell straight away that this would tell me everything I needed to know about quilting. I also checked out all the positive reviews on the Amazon website. Just read the contents, and everything is categorized with lots of images. I am sure this will be a well-used reference book for both new and experienced quilters.

I found this book to have more information than I expected. It reminds me of looking in an encyclopedia. There are plenty of great pictures, line drawings and explanations. I found this book to either give me much of the information I needed on a subject, or at times, at least enough to get me started. I would say it covers a whole lot of information in a nice hardcover book that is thin enough to take from workroom to couch for a good read.

Great book for beginners

This was the first quilting book that I checked out from the library when I started thinking about quilting. I liked it so much, that I ended up buying it. I just couldn't imagine not having it by my side when I had questions (and as a beginning quilter, I have a LOT of questions!!). This is a great book with a lot of information in it. There is only one other book that I think is just as good and that is _The Quilters' Ultimate Visual Guide._ Both books have many color pictures and explain things very clearly. If I could only have two books on basic quilting information, I would pick these two. Enjoy!

This has been an amazing book. It describes both prescription and OTC drugs in detail without being overly technical. For years it has been an excellent reference that I have relied on. In the past few years, though, more and more of the drugs prescribed for my family have not been in the book. I really wish that the AMA would put out a fresh edition of this excellent work, which is now not nearly so useful as it once was.

Excellent book. My wife is 69 years old has SLE "Lupus" and she has been on many different drugs. The newer drugs are not listed in the 1988 edition. Would be very happy if a new additon would be published.

I have used this book frequently however I believe with all the newer medications since 1988, we desperately need an up date. This is a very easy book to use. I have used others but prefer this one. A newer book for 2004 would be nice.

Please update this INVALUABLE REFERENCE!

I have found this book to be of immense help in not only fully describing the medications in sufficient detail, but also how each medication functions within the body. Dosages, referrals to other drugs in a particular drug family, and the ability to cross-reference medications within the same book, makes it a wonderful book for reference. My current copy is very worn, and I really would like to see this same book revised from the AMA VERY VERY soon. Thanks!!

This book is awesome and certainly has paid for itself as it has saved many a call to the Pharmacist and/or the Doctor. We are however, desperately in need of a update. It seems as though, everyday, there are new drugs that are not listed. We have found some newer, similar books on the market, however, the way they are structured cannot hold a candle to this one. So.....we "patiently" await a new edition. Please---

The worst of all possible worlds

This book is not for the recreational reader, indeed it is one of the most depressing and distressing documents I have ever read. Nevertheless, I urge all readers concerned with issues that impact on the survival of humanity to read it thoroughly and absorb the lessons which it so graphically presents. In terms of an indictment of our government and various vested interests, it compares favorably with J'accuse written in 1898 by Emile Zola in response to the corrupt behaivor of the French nation, government and army during the Dreyfus affair. The most horrifying event in the book, and there are many to choice from, is the description of how the Health Physics Division was subdivided after Dr. Morgan's retirement in 1972 and distributed among "other laboratory divisions where radiation protection is not a primary objective". When I read this my immediate thought was of the dismemberment of Lemuel Pitkin so brilliantly described by Nathanael West. One can only be appaled by the many destructive acts which occurred when the Angry Genie left the bottle. It is frightening that those responsible for them have, to my knowledge, never been cited for criminal irresponsibility.

A charming and important book.

This charming memoir starts in 1943, when Dr. Morgan was recruited away from his happy research on cosmic-ray physics to join the atomic-bomb project. He was one of the four or five persons assigned to figure out how to prevent bomb-workers from irradiating themselves to death. In 1943, it was barely known how to measure doses from the various types of radiation, so Dr. Morgan had to invent many a metering device. Additionally, no one knew how to store the radioactive waste which would accumulate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where Dr. Morgan detected its escape-routes and tried to plug them. He became an internationally honored expert and author on radiation health-effects and protection measures. This is the story of a man of great integrity, who made enormous contributions to protecting health, and yet by his own standards, failed to succeed well enough. His "walk" through the nuclear age helps to illuminate the suppression of scientific dissent in the nuclear enterprises --- and presents an interesting contrast to books by Dr. Glenn Seaborg (Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission) covering many of the same years. The ninth chapter covers Dr. Morgan's expert testimony for the plaintiffs in two landmark trials (the Karen Silkwood Case 1979, and the Utah Bomb-Fallout Case 1982). The memoir provides not only an important record of moral, legal, public health, environmental, and scientific history --- but it also provides a highly engaging personal story of coping with the unexpected.

A man of faith becomes a world famous scientist.

I really enjoyed this story about a good human being who descended from a long line of Lutheran ministers going back to Martin Luther. It required considerable courage for Dr. Karl Morgan to publically detail the "biggest mistake" of his life when he reluctantly agreed to censorship by his superiors. This book was clearly written from Morgan's soul and provides valuable perspective from a 91-year-old legend who started the entire field of health physics. This autobiography should be required reading for all Americans.

The true story of an unsung hero who saved countless lives.

I was captivated by Karl Z. Morgan's 50 year battle with powerful elements in the nuclear industrial complex for common sense safety measures. I was appalled to discover the extent of the damage the government inflicted upon our citizens through the abuse of nuclear power and and careless weapons' tests. Even more disturbing is Morgan's summary of numerous radiation experiments our government secretly conducted on innocent Americans. Morgan stands out as a pillar of truth in a desert of deceit. No one can read this without thinking "I had no idea this was going on."

The Angrt Genie is a must read.

It is commonly understood that only the best books are made into audio tapes. On a whim my family and I put the Angry Genie to the test. We read the book aloud on our annual cross country car trip without one complaint from any family member. The surprize attraction of the Angry Genie is its real appeal to the non scientific person. By just glancing through the book one might assume that he or she could be overwhelmed with scientific material, however, by no means is that the case. In the 180 pages of story, from the amazing experiments under Chicago University Stadium to the many photos of actual players in our history, I was drawn to the personalities and inside details of the developments of a powerful scientific discovery. In fact I most recommend this book because if the surprizing revelations on several fronts. First, the power and importance of science and scientists in this centuary is no more dramatically illustrated than in this story of nuclear power. Not even the terror of 'Outbreak" or the suspence of 'Apallo 13" are equal to the reawakening we get in the Angry Genie. Second, Dr. Morgan was able to input all of the required technical information and formulas in the book without interupting the book's flow. Third, the historical, medical and sociological impact is compelling. There is the letter from Einstein to FDR about the potential of the bomb and the fascinating information about the effects of all the different types of rays on humans. I plan on telling my book club about this wonderful book as well as all my friends who love historical books.
