Z Books

This is a great book for all children and also for those that have a child at heart. I have read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night" by Mark Haddon and really enjoyed this book. It is written with the same humor and feel good feelings.This book is a good read and a great value.

This whole "Ultimate A to Z Resource" Bible study set is an amazing set of books. My kids (I have 6 plus step-kids) have requested this set of books for their own study libraries. They are easy to understand, yet are thorough in their comments. In all of my use of these resource books, I have not found one instance where the Gospel or Biblical principles have been compromised in any way - something that is a rarity in books written and published in this generation. "Nelson Publishers" is to be highly commended for their work.

In a sea of investment books, finally one that explains things in plain english! The book is divided into two subsections. The first is simple enough for a teenager to grasp. The second goes far enough in depth that even a seasoned financial professional can learn a thing or two.

Good quick read.

First as a student of Spanish, and now as a Spanish teacher, at the secondary and college level, I have seen a lot of books about verbs. Like most beginning students, I bought 501 Spanish Verbs, and by the end of my first semester of college Spanish, I had already outgrown that limited book. In Spain, I found a fantastic book, Conjugación de los verbos: Manual Práctico (ISBN: 84-7640-891-9), but alas, the book is in Spanish, which limits its usefulness to beginning students.

All Spanish Verbs combines the usefulness of a 501 Spanish Verbs, with full verb conjugations, general rules of conjugation in the beginning, as well as tips on usual phrases, with the extended verb list of Conjugación.... What limits 501 Spanish Verbs is that there are 501 and only 501 verbs conjugated. In contrast, All Spanish Verbs provides models for the conjugation of every single paradigm you could encounter, and has an index with thousands upon thousands (I can't find my copy to give you the exact number) of verbs listed, with a reference to the fully conjugated verb that it conjugates like. For example, let's say you want to conjugate "mindanguear" (okay, not the most useful of verbs, but maybe you need to use it) and you look it up in 501... and the verb is not there. You're out of luck. With All Spanish Verbs... on the other hand, you see that mindanguear is not conjugated, but it is found in the index, and it is indexed to verb number 1--the model, basic -ar verb. You now know that this verb is conjugated perfectly regularly.

For the very early beginner, 501 Spanish Verbs might be a better choice, because it contains the 501 most frequent verbs you'll need to use, and for the first year of high school Spanish or the first semester of college Spanish, this might be sufficient. But if you have any language background and are comfortable with the idea of conjugating verbs, skip that book, and go straight to this one. Furthermore, if you think you will ever continue with Spanish, you will eventually need this kind of book.

Another advantage: since not as many verbs are conjugated fully, the book is nice and skinny, easy to stick in your briefcase or bookbag and carry everywhere with you!

Encyclopedia Of Allergies will make an excellent reference guide not only for health libraries, but public libraries where individuals are regularly consulting books for the latest insights. Encyclopedia Of Allergies appears in its second edition to update to the latest information on the various symptoms and treatments for a variety of allergies, from exercise-induced asthma to childhood allergies.

What a great resource! I borrowed this book from a collegue and immediately went to try and get one for myself. It is packed with ideas that are cross curricular, perfect for todays educational push to integrate curriculum. It also incorporates ideas that touch on different learning styles and mulitple intelligences. I'm a beginning Pre-K teacher and I immediately began using these ideas. I love the letter raps and so do my students!

Judith Viorst's The Alphabet from Z to A (with much confusion on the way) is a rather unconventional alphabet book in verse. Starting at the end of the alphabet and progressing forward, each letter has one page devoted to it with verses ranging from two to seven lines, in varying rhythms. The verses address the confusing idiosyncrasies of the English language, complaining about homonyms, silent letters, and other anomalies in a slyly exasperated tone:

R is for RING, RANG, and RUNG,
And yet RONG would be wrong, dear.

Q is for QUEUE, but not CUE.
And for one QUIET QUESTION:
Are we almost done?
Answer: There's sixteen more letters
Still left in this song, dear.

The verses are accompanied by Richard Hull's surreal illustrations, done in crest- and seal-like vignettes against a stark white background. Observant readers will discover all kinds of objects starting with the same letter embedded in the exquisite illustrations. (The end of the book introduces a participatory aspect in the form of a list of words to be found in the book for a game of "I Spy" with difficult vocabulary for even highly-literate adults, such as xerophyte and kyphosis. Parenthetical definitions, explanations, and humorous asides obviate the need for the dictionary for these words, as well as words children may not know, such as olive drab and arbor.) The back cover describes the book as "An alphabet book for folks who already know their ABCs." Children who are grappling with the difficulties of matching letters and sounds in English will appreciate the tone of the verses and may even develop a special fondness for the idiosyncratic nature of our quirky language.

Churchill's ministerial brilliance overshadowed his literary achievements to such an extent that many don't realize that he was a writer. Da Vinci's talents as an inventor, painter, and sculptor fully eclipsed his terrific accomplishments as a musician and lyrist. Likewise, Scott is widely portrayed as being little more than a chortling meterologist, one known mainly for trumpeting the birthdays of elderly viewers in between his forecasts. This tome gives the lie to this perception, revealing Scott as a thoughtful writer, as well as an unabashed patriot. For sweet America herself in all of her vastness is Scott's own `hood - and he's that homeboy on the corner, layin' down rhymes, hookin' down forties, pullin' out his jammy, and aiming it at the sky.

I bought this book in 1993 when my husband was suffering from a
illness. The doctors were having a hard time in their diagnosis of his illness, and I wanted to help in anyway possible. This book was my constant companion for a year, and I still find it very useful for me , my family and for friends that are always getting information from it. My only dissapointment today is to find out there is not a newer, or rather updated version out...medicine has made a lot of new discoveries and constantly up dating treatments.
