I found this book attractive in its succint style and artwork. Both young and old--especially visitors and newcomers to Philly--would benefit from its reading. I plan to pass it onto my nephew interning in the city this summer.

I found this book today in the Drexel University Bookstore of all places. What a lucky find!
Yes, this is a children's book, but it is fit for children of all ages - particularly those with a connection to the city of Philadelphia.
It is an A-Z book, but it is also so much more - a mini travel guide of sites and history with tidbits of great information.
I particularly enjoyed the front and back page illustrations of many things associated with the area that wouldn't fit into the text of the book. A great opportuity to expand your child's knowledge about the area.
The illustrations are beautiful. I would happily purchase a print of the eagle rowing on the Schuylkill River for my brother who spent untold hours there both in high school and in college.
The highlights of the city as well as gems of the surrounding area are succintly, yet wonderully covered. It includes entries for the some of the oldest and most revered sites as well as some recent additions to the Philly scene. This is a book that your child will be able to enjoy for several years - not several minutes.
I will be purchasing many more copies of this book - it's truly fabulous!

I found this book totally by accident and just thumbed to the middle of the book to see what it was like. The next thing I knew, I was standing in the middle of the aisle and laughing out loud at the things I read. I have bought several copies of this book and given to friends because I find it so amusing. I'd recommend this to anyone!

I picked up the book at the library while browsing through some of the nearby books. This caught my eye because "LEX" is not exactly the most common thing you hear in your daily life. From the first section to the last, I roared with laughter. The funniest part was the section when he took out certain letters from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and tried to make the story still make sense. When he took out "a" from the poem, it was hilarious to hear that Polly owned some sheep. It was very enjoyable. If you ever want a good laugh with the English language, this is the book to read.

The Booklist review is on target. This book is a facinating read for those interested in improving their own decision processes as well as those just interested in stories of decision making in action from a vast array of examples. Writing is clean, clear and flows readily. Worth the trouble to find a copy.

Great book if you really want to improve your dog's jumps

I borrowed this book for a week and now really want it for my library. I must say upfront that I'm just starting to get into the agility and obedience comp world so I don't know how much use it would be for those already heavily into it.

However, this book goes step by step, teaching your dog to jump perfectly from the beginning. It seems like if you were to do everything in this book there would be no reason why your dog would drop bars, etc. It may seem like a pain in the butt to do everything, but I think it would be worth it to not have to untrain poor jump behaviors later.

Excellent introduction to the Qabbalah
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.

Halevi is a respected authority who has written several good books on the Qabbalah. This one is a gem. The concise text introduces several key concepts of Qabbalistic thought. Like all the books in Thames & Hudson's "Art & Imagination" series, this one is profusely illustrated ---- after 30 pages of text are 60 pages of pictures & diagrams, all amply explained in accompanying notes. Most of the diagrams have the original Hebrew writing, so this book is a tremendous resource for anyone who reads Hebrew. In particular, I am a big fan of the "extended Tree of Life" diagram on p. 41, showing how the Sefirot play out in the worlds of Azilut, Beriah, Asiyyah, and Yesirah; I have never seen such a detailed diagram of this anywhere else. Between the text and the notes accompanying the diagrams, Halevi makes clear the scriptual origins of the Qabbalah, the beliefs & practices, as well as the influence of the Qabbalah on non-Jewish traditions. I think this book is a wonderful introduction for a modern reader seeking an "in" on the Qabbalah. Even after reading other books, I find myself going back to this book again and again. It is a treasure.

Well, I still don't unserdtand all this crazy stuff but this book is an extremely good overview with lots of pictures. I am not Jewish but it looks like this book would be really good for Jewish people who want to understand how Kabbalah relates to their religous practices.

This is a very charming book. Not only is there Chekhov's fine story about a lost dog getting involved in a circus act, but the illustrations are wonderful. Surely this is the way 19th Century St. Petersburg looked!

My daughter first found this book in the library when she was six, and it quickly became one of her favorites.

Thomas Mills answers the myriad of questions that an Actor might have regarding potential for success in the field of acting.
...An altruistic tour with useful quotes from people in the industry. The author comes across as an "actors actor" conjouring up the "we're in this together attitude".
A must read for any actor(or aspiring actor) looking for that edge to further ones' career. Three thumbs up!!

My son is 2 and absolutely LOVED this book.

As a result of this book, he now knows airplanes certainly better than I ever did. The first night we brought it home, he made me read it to him 7 times in quick succession. This remained a favorite for several months.

The book taught him lots of things about airplanes and his alphabet. As a result of reading this book to the point of memorizing it, my son now proudly says "F is for Fuselage". And he can identify his letters more readily.... correlating each to something to do with airplanes.

It's a great teaching tool (for my son and for myself!) and was enjoyable for us to read together.

Awesome ABC Book!!!

A Shiny Red Convertible...Some Things Never Change!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-02
This endearing yet simple story book written by the talented Lois Lenski features her signature illustrations and tells the tale of Mr. Small and his pride and joy, the little auto. Written in 1934 this book follows Mr. Small in his jaunty suit, bow tie and derby hat as he cruises around town in his shiny red convertible. The other traffic on the road includes a horse and buggy, a trolley car, and some startled chickens and ducks. We tool along down Main Street with Mr. Small, put the top up when it rains, fix a flat tire, and pay a visit to the filling station. Mr. Small and his little auto are utterly charming and the way this book captures the gentle atmosphere of a bygone day warms the heart. Kids will love it and so will the folks who read to them. Lois Lenski's picture books are never long on plot or action, but they are delightfully colorful and whimsical. Her books, no matter their publication date, seem to capture human nature that runs true throughout the stream of time. Look what she says about a man and his car. "Mr. Small has a little Auto. It is red and shiny. He likes to look at it." Travel around your own town on a sunny Saturday morning...you'll see Mr. Small is alive and well. Enjoy this book and all of Lois Lenski's other charmers.

An old-fashioned, quaint and charming book for young children. My boys (ages 3 and 1) pull it off the bookshelf a few times a week and bring it to me to read to them. The references to passing a horse and buggy, stopping for the trolley car, and waiting for the policeman to switch the "stop-go" signal are throwbacks to a simpler time. Delightful and highly recommended.

McKuen's Best--'The Outstretched Hand'
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-09
My favorite book of love poems by the eclectic talent of Rod McKuen. He's written several poetry books, but this one's the best all because of the poem, 'The Outstretched Hand.' McKuen has done just about everything in life besides being a talented songwriter and entertainer. He's been a Radio D.J., composer, newspaper columnist and now best-selling author. He did the motion picture scores for, 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' & 'Joanna.' He's recorded 35 record albums of his own songs. He has published 'Stanyan Street and other Sorrows' in 1966 and 'Listen to the Warm.' If you want to know about Rod McKuen style this is a good place to start.

Here's an excerpt from the book of 'The Outstretched Hand' (for Jay Allen):

Each of us was made by God
and some of us grew tall.
Others stood out in the wind
their branches bent and fell.
Those of us who walk in light
must help the ones in darkness up.

For that's what life is all about
and love is all there to life.

Each of us made by God
beautiful in His mind's eye.
Those of us that turned out sowed
should look across our shoulders once
and help the weak ones to their feet.

It only takes an outstretched hand.
