Easy reading, great suggestions, and it was exactly what I'd been looking for.

I was looking for trustworthy and very useful advice for my too busy daughter as she tries to balance her work, her family, and her own inner or soul needs. I knew that the author is well respected, and so I chose this book in the hope of offering her a gift that would ultimately bring her more inner peace. I'll have to let you know how it has worked, but I was particularly grateful for the format...an audio tape, which she could listen to in her car on long commutes to work. Thank you for having this available.

I was not looking for this particular book when I went into my favorite bookstore/coffeshop. But, there it was! How could I resist the title? Inner Peace for Busy Women--this book HAD to be written just for me, I thought!

It is not often that I find it necessary to comment on the actual physical components of a book when I sit down to review it. This time, however, I feel I must share my delightful discoveries. First of all, I am naturally drawn to "little books" as I call them. You know the type. They are slim little volumes that carry messages far deeper than their sleek size could possibly seem to hold. This is one such book. The 179 pages speak not only to me but to many women I know. Now it is my mission to introduce them to this book so that they can have the same delightful experience I had.

Paying for my coffee and newfound book, I settled into a quiet little corner of the shop. The quality of the paper is exquisite. Smooth pages of a soft, subtle white color are inviting. But it was hard to ignore the striking difference from most books, even those "little books" I so enjoy. The delicate shade of green ink is a relaxing and welcoming change from the stark black print we have become accustomed to in most of our reading. I am fairly certain it is no accident that this was the chosen print color. It beckons the reader into a cool, peaceful and calm domain. While inside those pages, I felt as though I had stepped into another world where someone understood what I felt, what I feared, what I needed to hear, and what I already knew. The book and its author made me feel as though I was in the company of good friends once I opened these pages.

Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., is the bestselling author of this work as well as many other publications. She is a well-known expert on stress, spirituality, and the mind-body connection. She has ten other publications to her credit and is a nationwide speaker on women's health and spirituality and integrative medicine. She also hosts a website where visitors can browse, sign up for a free newsletter, and get the latest information on seminars, speaking engagements, books etc.

The moment I turned the page to the book's preface, "I Am Woman Telling the Truth", I was hooked. As I read on, I found myself thinking that in some ways, reading this book felt as good as sharing a cup of tea with a dear friend.


"If there's one thing I know for sure, it's that a busy life is hard. In spite of our best efforts to have successful careers, raise happy families, enjoy a rich spiritual life, and make a difference in the world, many busy women carry an unspoken burden of grief inside themselves,"

writes Borysenko.

I couldn't get enough of this book. Nor could I read it fast enough. Yet, at the same time, I knew that the first read was only to whet my appetite for more. I sipped my coffee and read the volume from cover to cover, then headed home to wait for a bit of peace and quiet to REALLY read the book a second time. Its message was just too rich and too personal to be read once and put aside.

"Women's wisdom has traditionally been passed down through story. In sharing these stories of our lives with one another, we leave road maps that detail treasures and traps, paving the way for the generation that follows."

Has Ms. Borysenko been to Story Circle Network? It would seem so from those powerful and true words! Her philosophy is so in sync with that of our own organization that I couldn't help but notice how closely her words mirrored our beliefs about our writings.

This little volume with its five parts contains essays of three types: (1) woman-to-woman stories, (2) essays dealing with research, and (3) spiritual principles on aspects of inner life. With an invitation to join the author, readers are offered a chance to "discover some ways to finally find some balance, wholeness, and peace in our lives."

Looking for some uplifting and encouraging words about stress, guilt, or the busy-ness of life? They're here in this little book. Part of the sandwich generation? Read "Taking Care While Caretaking." Struggling to "Come Back Home to Yourself" (the title of part III)? Spend a little time pondering "Mindfulness: The Lights Are On, and Somebody's Home."

I am fairly certain that once you begin this little treasure, you will find it difficult to put down. When you come to the end, you will feel blessed, renewed, and perhaps a bit sad that the time spent with this new good friend has drawn to a close.

In her afterword titled "Sisters on a Journey", Borysenko bids her readers farewell with these words: "I wish that we could sit together and talk about our busy lives over a cup of tea." (I KNEW IT !! I knew that was what this reading experience felt like!!) "...Looking deeply into each other's eyes, we'd realize that we've held the wisdom in our hands all along. What is there to search for? The answers are already ours... As women have from the beginning of time, we would recognize oursleves in our respective stories." (Are we SURE Ms. Borysenko isn't part of Story Circle Network?!) "...Even though we haven't had the chance to sip tea together, pehaps you will do just that with a friend or a group of friends and talk about your lives..."

This book resonated with me in a way no book has done in a long, long time. I intend to share copies of it with several dear friends and family members. Its message is profound, timely, and deeply personal.

Listening to this audiobook in my car driving kids to and from lessons and on my i-pod commuting to and from work was as comforting as a one-hour full body massage. Although much of what she discusses would be familiar to anyone who has dabbled in New Age, the way that Dr. Borysenko frames this information specifically in terms of the anguishes and rewards of a working woman's life made it uniquely digestible and gave me much food for thought.

Inner Peace For Busy Women By Dr. Joan Z. Borysenko is a very nice surprise in that it is not a lot of advice about how to meditate, although this is one of her prime suggestions as a daily practice for gaining inner peace, but this 2 - CD set is her private sharing of the demons she has faced throughout her career as first a medical student/mother/poor housewife and through the years through divorce, single parenting, and balancing a demanding career as a doctor. The pain she experienced and the wisdom she gained she shares openly and especially deals with the persistent guilt of the working mother who is told by society that she can have it all, but in reality she is living a juggling act that kills relationships and individuals. She and her children succeeded through it all and have a loving adult relationship, although her marriage did not. She gives sage advice and encouragement to any woman walking this tight rope. EXCELLENT!

Very cute book! My 2-year old son is a Kipper fan and he loves this book! Hopefully it will help us with learning the ABC's!

My 2 1/2 year old LOVES this book. She's a big Kipper fan, and this is such a great book - much requested at bed time. We love all of Mike Inkpen's work...

My son loves the Kipper videos. I think he might even like the the books more. He takes them everywhere.

A really nice book that covers each letter of the alphabet. It has easy-to-read large print and clean, tidy drawings of some of the familiar Kipper characters (mainly Kipper and Arnold).
My only objection is that the edition I have has some Americanisms, like ladybug, instead of ladybird (I suppose because the publisher, Red Wagon Books, an imprint of Harcourt, is US-based). That doesn't go with the very English Kipper of the animated series. But aside from that, it's a lovely book.

I basically agree with all the reviews so far. I read this in my teens and it left a lasting impression on me. I've re-read it since on a fairly regular basis. Brilliant evocation of an early culture far removed from our own but peopled with those whose emotional reactions one can so empathise with - doubt, uncertainty and deepening friendship.

I am delighted it is back in print, although a bit ambivalent about the cover design. When will "The Sword at Sunset" be re-printed - preferably unabridged and with the map that some of the early editions had?

I really love this book. I picked it up in high school for a book report and got sucked into Rosemary Sutcliff's world. I'm glad to see a new printing is coming out, because you couldn't find this book anywhere, and the copy I have I stole from school, that's how much I love this book. I also highly recommend The Sword and the Circle, a telling of the Arthurian legend.

The "Mark of the Horse Lord" is a beautifully written story of loyalty, honor and sacrifice. The ancient Scottish setting and characters are masterfully portrayed and the story line grabs the reader on the first page and holds on tight to the very end!
Rosemary Sutcliff writes wonderfully engaging historical novels. While her books give the reader a great feel for the time period and setting, story line is never compromised! Most of her books are written for children and young adults, however, this book is more appropriate for adults and older teens. Younger readers may find the wording a little difficult to follow. Highly recommended!

One of Rosemary Sutcliff's best books is back in print. Several of her titles have been unavailable for years: Dawn Wind, Knight's Fee, The Shield Ring, Frontier Wolf, Sword at Sunset, The Mark of the Horse Lord.

Like much of her work, TMOTHL is based on real events. Sutcliff is perhaps the finest children's historical novelist. Folks of all ages enjoy reading her work. She could research an episode in Britain's past and add memorable people and descriptive period language. The resulting tale would be true to history and her characters' humanity. As other reviewers have stated, "She makes you believe it happened just this way."

I hope Front Street Publishing succeeds with Horse Lord, and decides to bring back more Sutcliff books currently out of print.

If I were sent to a deserted island with as many books as there are fingers on my right hand, this would be one of them. I found this book in its original edition in a small town library over twenty years ago and have sought it out in every library in every town I've been in since. Its that kind of story.

If the heart of a good story is the soul-journey taken by the main character, then this book deserves a place in the canon of great literature because Phaedros' journey is truly epic, starting tightly coiled within his own needs, spiraling outward with each challenge he faces, finally culminating in the most magnificently expansive act a man can perform.

Images from this story will rematerialize in the reader's mind long after the back cover is closed upon the bittersweet ending. Highly recommended.

As an aside, if you have read Megan Whalen Turner's Thief series you may have noticed that she also apparently is an admirer of Sutcliff. I'm pretty certain she has planted some pointed references to this book and Eagle of the Ninth in her own books. Anyone else spot those?

This book is excellently written; clear, concise, and easy to understand. With examples on the opposite page of the text, it is very easy to follow and comprehend. It can easily read front to back or as a reference, it not only clearly explains what, but how and why. I've worked with JCL and mainframes for over 20 years and would strongly recommend this book for beginners or experienced professionals. I keep a well-thumbed, heavily highlighed, tabbed copy in my cube at all times. Keep in mind, this book is updated as dp systems are updated, so don't get the earlier editions (ie, the Second Edition in the gray and black cover) which are obsolete. You only need one book on JCL - this one is it.

Good reference book, I have it by my desk and use it often.

I must agree with the others reviews. This book is an invaluable resource that will save your time reading those boring, 1000-page, IBM Redbooks. It gives a nice introduction on IBM Mainframes, operating system concepts, as well mastering JCL skills. After reading this book you will feel more confident to go deeply into the IBM documentation and learn the extra skills needed to your area (databases, networking, programming, etc.).

This book is a tremendous reference resource for anyone who works in the IBM mainframe environment, especially for those who don't work with JCL on a daily basis or for those seldom-used tasks for which you may not have any "canned" JCL readily available. I strongly recommend this book as an invaluable JCL reference document.

My job requires me to write scripts on Windows and Unix platforms. I have no problem writing Windows batch files or Unix shell scripts to copy or move files, change permissions, create and delete directories, write results to log files, etc.

Recently, I was asked to write a mainframe script. I was told to write this script in Rexx. When I looked into Rexx, it was just another scripting language. It was not hard to understand how it worked. However, unlike Windows batch files or Unix shell scripts, there was more to writing a Rexx program than just knowing the Rexx language - I needed JCL to run it!! I had seen JCL before. I knew each job started with a JOB card and that it executed PROCs and PGMs. I also knew that I did not know nearly enough about JCL to write JCL to do what I wanted it to do. That's when I went to Amazon and found this book.

Not only did this book confirm what little I did know and correct some misundertandings I had, it went far more deeply into JCL to describe how to use many features that I did not know existed. One of the best features of this book is that it provides some background information on how mainframes work and the naming conventions used. This information is useful when JCL coding is introduced because the reader has a better idea of what the JCL is used for and what it happening with the various statements. JCL coding is not even introduced until Chapter 4!!

After the background information, this book then goes through the various aspects of JCL coding. The basics of what I needed to know to run my Rexx program were addressed as were many concepts that I can now put in my "bag of tricks" for future projects. I am sure most of our mainframe programmers do not know most of this material.

This book is not limited to JCL. It also describes how to compile Cobol programs, how to copy, move, sort, delete and print datasets using common mainframe utilities. It even has a chapter on Unix System Services. Prior to reading these chapters, I had no idea how to copy a dataset to a new dataset on the mainframe using a batch program. For me, this was a trivial issue on a Windows or Unix platform. I now know how to do it on the mainframe. This book clearly explains the process. It also provides coding examples for all concepts described throughout the book.

If you are new to computing, I don't think you want to start with the mainframe as the first platform you learn. However, if you have some computing background from working with Windows and Unix, then I highly recommend this book to get a solid foundation on how to run batch programs on the mainframe.

In the past, I had to ask a coworker to help me when I needed to work with JCL. I purchased this book so that I could code some JCL for myself to run my Rexx program. Now, not only does my Rexx program execute flawlessly, I also have a thorough understanding of how to write mainframe batch programs for future projects. Who knows, maybe my coworkers will start coming to me with their complex JCL coding problems!!

It is really a very good book from IBM about DB2-SPL. In our company we bougth a lot of DB2 book, but this is the very best.

The book describes IBM's Procedural Language, which runs on their db2 servers. It is not a general purpose language, like C or Java. Rather, it is tied directly to db2 and IBM's implementation of SQL. But within this context, the book explains the expressive power of PL. It shows at length how you can write stored procedures, triggers and functions in PL. The level of detail and the cited examples should reassure you of PL's capability.

But why even write business logic code at the database layer? There have been other books on n-tier application design, which call for the locating of business logic in a middle tier and not at the database. The authors' rejoinder is that while that makes for an elegant design, practical experience shows that often, crucial logic needs to be at the database. This reduces networks traffic and can heavily improve perforance. Hence the need for PL, or something like it.

Be wary of the book's claim that PL lets you write "portable application logic". It is portable only between instances of db2 running under linux, unix, Microsoft Windows or IBM's operating systems. When you write embedded logic in PL, you are also embedding yourself or your company into db2. Which may indeed be fine by you. But just so you know.

If you are a developer or DBA who is new to DB2, I would highly recommend this book to you. Both administration and development topics are covered, helpful best practices and tips are included, and illustrative examples are used.

The fundamental DB2 concepts and the different DB2 tools such as the Control Center are introduced in a very straightforward and easy-to-understand manner. This allows DB2-newbies to get fully up to speed on DB2 terminology and functionality, while serving as a gentle refresher for those who might have prior DB2 experience. The book achieves a good balance of topic selection and level of detail. More advance topics that are covered are explained in a manner that most novices would comprehend and in enough detail to be useful.

The prime focus of the book is on leveraging the ease-of-use and autonomic capabilities of DB2. If you are a developer not wanting to memorize database and/or SQL command syntax, you will particularly appreciate this book. The book shows how most common administrative tasks can be very easily performed using the GUI tools and Wizards provided with DB2. Ease of application development is demonstrated in both Java and Microsoft .net environments. An easy and intuitive introduction to DB2 SQLPL is also provided.

Overall, I think that if you are new to DB2, or need to learn the essential concepts/features needed to develop and/or administer DB2 quickly, you will be very pleased with this book. It is a perfect starting point for introducing the most important concepts, features, and tools. As you gain more experience and familiarity with the product, a more advanced book can be obtained.

I didn't know anything about writing DB2 stored procedures until I bought this book. After reading it I have written several procedures to aid in data migration. It is well laid out and has all the necessary information. The best part is that you don't feel like you are reading a technical book.

probably my favourite of new reiki books this year. THIS is how reiki should be encouraged in ourselves, our students and in others. Amy (whom I've never met) has written a wonderful book which offers much to think about, much to try and some GREAT approaches in learning to BE reiki and BE the energy. There are a good number of books out there wherein one can learn how to be sooooo Japanese and there are numbers of books which repeat the same old information but this book truly ADDS to the knowledge of reiki in the world... So far, of the over 125 books about Reiki which I own, this is one of my favourites.

I haven't finished the entire book, but it validates how I practice Reiki. I am very glad I bought it.

So many reiki practitioners are taught how to do reiki, i.e, hand positions, varying symbols and techniques, meditation and so on, but so little time is actually spent helping the student of reiki to actually learn how to be OPEN to the intuitive flow that is essentially a part of true reiki practice. Most teachers, in fact, may not even be aware how to tap into the intuitive flow themselves.

How does reiki actually show us what to work on with a client? How do you learn to interpret the signals and signs you receive while giving a healing treatment? What steps can a reiki practitioner take to become more open to the messages contained within the human energy field and the flow of energy from the universe?

Rowland's book is chock full of *useful* and helpful information designed to teach both reiki students and other teachers *how* to be open and aware of these signs, these messages. Written in a concise, straightforward manner, the book is nonetheless a great storehouse of information that is much needed at this time and particularly in this country, where most of the reiki practitioners are left to sort out for themselves exactly what to do with what they "receive" from a client during a treatment.

Rowland teaches classes in Reiki and Intuition and this book is based on her work with these classes and with teaching students from all levels of Reiki how to tune in to their intuitive processes. As such, it is a great success. Rowland is neither self-important nor does she waste any time in criticism of any other practices or techniques; what is taught here can be implemented into ANY reiki practice, regardless of lineage or style.

I had already intended to take Rowland's class; after reading this book, I am more interested than ever, not because the book is insufficient, but because her writing style is so engaging, that I want to study with her more! I have met her in person and reading her book does sound exactly like speaking with her in person. It's a good read, interesting, and well-planned out. I highly recommend it for anyone who is Reiki.

This fascinating book is geared toward the person who already knows what reiki is and has already been attuned. I am attuned for Reiki I and II, and was introduced to many new ideas and ways of using reiki in this book. Mostly the book deals with the intuitive aspects of reiki, and this is a subject that was no more than mentioned in my training. The book presents in depth ideas about how reiki enhances intuition and how intuitive reiki can lead to more effective healing. For the person who knows nothing about reiki and wants to learn, I recommend "Practical Reiki" by Mari Hall. For the person who knows a little more about reiki, "Intuitive Reiki for Our Times" will be both interesting and inspirational. Someone who is interested in developing intuition might also like this book.

Amy Rowland's new book is beautifully written and thoughtfully told. Through personal stories and examples of dialogue with her clients and students, Amy clearly demonstrates how the subtle energy of intuition can be perceived, understood and incorporated in all levels of Reiki practice.
In addition to the exceptional writing, style, and content, the most compelling reason to read Amy's book is how magically it imparts, to the reader, her beautiful Spirit and the Spirit of Reiki.

I enjoyed this book and was very informed by it. I doubt you can find more detailed background data about Lucille Ball's work (from the beginning of her career to the end, from stage to the big and small screens) and her (lesser known) co-stars and co-workers anywhere else. The problem is, I'm a new fan to Lucy and I wanted to read about her life in a more conventional way (where she was born, raised, her influences, her marriage, children, etc). Those types of books got such mixed reviews from fans that I thought I'd start with this one, which had only positive reviews. There is some basic bio in this book, but it assumes you know that type of information about Lucy. So I would just say: make sure you don't start with this book if you're a new fan. It's like getting to know her backwards (everyone around her instead of the star herself). This is definitely a book for seasoned fans who want to know "more."

Great format, easy to read. Every coffee table must have one!!

A thoroughly enjoyable read on Lucy. Learned some things I never knew - and loved that way you could navigate from one section to another.

This new paperback biography of Lucille Ball is something different, an "A to Z" run through her life, sprinkled with the author's opinions. I actually agreed with most of them, and the breezy style and content is the perfect antidote for a depressing day. Read it and love Lucy all over again.

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I couldn't put it down. I loved the format, the authors perspective and views were interesting and unique and you could tell he was a real Lucy fan (who isn't). Add this book to your cart and you won't be disappointed. You can read it again and again because of the unique way it is written. A must for Lucy fans. Enjoy!

My daughter and I loved this book! I can't wait to read more by Lori Z. Scott!! I am going to give this book as a gift to my daughters' friends!

I got both books for my nieces. Great caring characters with good christian values, in a very funny entertaining way. Highly recommend for chapter book readers or to read out loud to children!

Do you read the "Junie B. Jones" series? Do you like books that have lots of action and teach you cool activities you can do at home, too? Then you'll love the Meghan Rose series by Lori Z. Scott.

In the first book of the series, Meghan Rose On Stage!, Meghan, a bouncy and energetic first grader, decides to try out for the school talent show. Meghan finds out after announcing what her act is, a rock collection, that it isn't really a talent. Now signed up for an audition, Meghan needs to come up with a talent.

One of her friends, Ryan tries to help out by teaching Meghan how to blow bubbles. Instead of Meghan learning how, Ryan ends up with a wad of gum in his hair. At school, Meghan watches her classmates to get ideas. Meghan ends up getting jealous because she can't do the things her classmates can. And having piano player Lynette in her class, bragging about how good she is, just makes things worse. In the end, Meghan finds her talent and makes a new friend along the way.

Lori Z. Scott did a wonderful job mixing - learning not to be jealous of others, finding your talents, and just being yourself - with all of Meghan Rose's crazy behavior and antics. There are a few references to prayer and God. But it's done very tactfully. At the end of the book you'll also find a teacher/parent guide. This wonderful Q&A will have kids applying the lessons learned with Meghan Rose. Another bonus is the Activity Ideas. Kids will love doing the same activities Meghan Rose did herself.

Stories for Children Editor, VS Grenier

I loved reading this book, and I was very glad to have my 9 year old daughter read it. It is incredibly entertaining and it also teaches some wonderful lessons about friendship, jealousy, and other issues. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the characters in the book, and I even felt for a moment like I was back in grade school as I read it. What a joy to read!

I read this book by myself while my daughter was in school today. It was the best children's book I ever read. I love that Meghan Rose looks to God for help and guidance. I can't wait for my daughter to come home from school so we can read it together! Lori Scott, if you are reading these reviews, please keep writing these books. From now on, one of your books will be with every birthday gift my daughter gives.

I bought this for my "almost" grandson's first birthday. I remember it from my farm and ranch childhood and now it will enchant another generation. It is somewhat "Dick and Jane"--very easy to memorize. Also it is nice to now have the board book for the really little ones.

My 14-month-old loves this book. We read it over and over again! We live in a fairly rural area and we walk every day to see horses. The book's simple drawings of horses (and cowboys) working and going about their day capitvates my daughter. It's suggested for kids around four, but it's a real hit with our toddler. I wish they had a Cowgirl Small, but that's just me.

My 3 yr. old son LOVES the Lois Lenski books, this being one of his (and my) favorites. We started reading it when he was just 2, and we have also read all the other cowboy books we can find. In my opinion, this is the one to get for a toddler. My son loves to ride around the house on his stick horse playing Cowboy Small. Timeless.

You can't go wrong with Cowboy Small. Even if your child isn't into being a cowboy, they will like this story. My 2 girls (now ages 22 and nearly 13) both LOVED Cowboy Small! I read it over and over and over and over...we had it on permanent checkout from the library it seems!! Then the library gave it to us when they were clearing out worn books...we were thrilled and treasured this book! I read this book so much I can still recite most of it. My son is 7 and he likes to play cowboy and he likes his reissue copy of Cowboy Small, but it is interesting that my girls asked for it to be read to them much more often. Our children's bouncy horse even got named Cactus in honor of Cowboy Small's horse. I recently gave this book to a 60+ yr. old friend who has horses and dresses in cowboy clothes, and he loved it! He has it displayed on a shelf in his livingroom and reads it to his grandchildren when they visit. I repeat: you just cannot go wrong with Cowboy Small. It has a simple but great story, nice pictures, and is a whole lot of fun. So glad it is available for today's children.

This is a great book, very light hearted and catchy. Be prepared to keep it handy, it's one of those books you will read it to your child, niece, nephew.... over and over again.

This is a good book, however no better than those found at school stores. Not sure what I was expecting, however - my little lefthander is using it.

I do recommend this program. It's simple, straight forward, and makes handwriting easy to learn.

After struggling to teach the D'Nealian style of handwriting, I have found this book to be much easier for children to understand. It does not encourage slanted writing. But it does show how to easily connect the letters, which is what cursive means. Somewhat simplified, but that is probably okay. I like the workbook format. It teaches how to do handwriting with space to practice. I would use this in homeschooling and also as an enrichment tool at home for after-schoolers.

These books are great for beginners and more advanced students. Each book takes the student step by step through the writing process with just the right amount of practice not to overwhelm the child.

As a mom of a child who doesn't have beautiful handwriting and doesn't like to practice, I like this series. It's easy to teach and it's not filled with pages of writing the same letter over and over and over and over and...you get my point. The daily lessons are short and my son likes it.
