This book is great! It's a really good Dragonball book. If you have a little kid that wants to get a Dragonball book, get him this one. Some of the other ones have things that might not be too good for little children to see ( vol.1 has some nudity.) I've read it like, 7 times aleady! You should buy it!

the funniest one yet!

May I first say that this book is not about vampires? That would be some of Ms Brite's other works, most noticably Lost Souls and Love in Vein.
This book is about Zach, a computer hacker who looks like Edward Scissors Hands and is running from the FBI, and Trevor, a 'weirdly socialized' artist whose mother and younger brother were murdered by his father, who then commited suicide, when Trevor was young. These two interact in a way that carries the entire story. I loved them and it.

Expose of early Christian v. Pagan as Protestant v. Catholic
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-05
In the book Drudgery Divine, J. Z. Smith portrays Christianity and mystery religions in their late-antique phase as similar simultaneous parallel developments. He emphasizes diversity in all the religions, against the monolithic assumption that underlies the usual project of comparing "the" Jewish religion, "the" Christian religion, and "the" Pagan type of religion.

Drudgery Divine is an expose of the biased and flawed nature of the Protestant, anti-Catholic project of portraying early Christianity as completely non-Catholic, non-ritualist, and non-initiatory. This Protestant scholarly project was based on illegitimate approaches to comparison of early, pre-Catholic Christianity to the pagan/Hellenistic religions.

The Protestant project sought to portray Christianity as far from ritual and initiation and mystery-religion as possible, and implicitly equated Catholic practices with Hellenistic ritual, initiation, and mystery, arguing that because pure, original Christianity was not at all like Hellenistic religion, original Christianity was not at all like Catholic Christianity.

According to the Protestant scholars, original Christianity was completely unlike Catholic Christianity, being strictly a matter of revealed, not secret religion; being strictly a matter of straightforward rational ethics, not initiation and ritual; being strictly a matter of sermon study-lectures, not magic-like ritual practices; being strictly a matter of doctrinal principles of pure faith, not ritual activity.

Insofar as the older Jewish religion could be portrayed as unlike Hellenistic secret ritual initiation, the Protestant scholars emphasized that real, original Christianity derived purely and strictly from the Jewish religion, as opposed to having anything to do with pagan/Hellenistic (read 'Catholic') secret ritual initiation.

According to those Protestant scholars, the word 'mysterion' in Jewish writings has only one meaning to consider, and this meaning is purely secular, and simply connotes 'secret', and does not connote secret ritual initiation -- therefore, the use of the word 'mysterion' in original (which is to say, non-Catholic) Christianity had nothing to do with Hellenistic-type (read 'Catholic-type') secret ritual initiation.

Smith's book does not serve the purpose of putting forth an elaborated correct positive model of the nature of earliest Christianities. Its focused purpose is to sweep away the bunk, biased, covert project driven by anti-Catholic concerns, to enable the next generation of scholars to completely re-approach the question of the relationship of early Christianity to Hellenistic religion, including an adequate treatment of multiplicity within Christianity and within the other religions, and development over time.

He points out that some kinds of Christianity were similar to some kinds of Hellenistic religion.

One of many tenets of the Protestant project of comparing original Christianity/Jewish religion against Hellenistic/Catholic religion, Smith briefly points out, is the idea that the Jewish religion was completely unlike secret ritual initiation.

Was für ein Wörterbuch! - What a dictionary!

Can't truly say that I've read this whole book, after all, it has 1,816 pages, is three inches thick and has three columns of very small type on each page. This is not an English to German / German to English dictionary. It is a German dictionary written entirely in German. That is, it has German definitions---which is why I got it for Christmas two seasons ago. This is a great reference work, especially if you are confused by multiple German entries for English words in the standard German-English / English-German dictionaries. Although the print is small, it is very distinct, with the bold type standing out well above the rest. Each entry is also very comprehensive. Of course, because Germans have such long words, most of the entries are replete with abbreviations, but don't worry, there's a long listing of them in the front of the book along with a concise grammar guide and other amenities.

Unentbehrlich--really

For the serious student of the German language, this is simply the best you can do (short of Duden's 6-volume, million-entry version). As a German-German dictionary, this stands head and shoulders above the best English-German German-English dictionary you can buy. Whereas the EG/GE dictionaries usually just match up German words to their English counterparts and vice versa, the Duden gives you genuine *definitions*. The result is that you are far less likely to use German words in inappropriate contexts: For example, thinking that because 'werfen' means 'throw', the translation of 'throw a party' is 'eine Party werfen' (it's not). Highly recommended.

A charming hero on an exciting adventure, a a motherless calf who triumphs over adversity to find his cow family. It captures the attention of children, and adults. My grandchildren can attest to that. And who knew a cow could be so lovable and expressive. The illustrations are masterful and delightful. Well done!

My daughter loves this book! She is four years old and is enthralled by the fantastic illustrations as well as the engaging saga of little Duke Devlin. I have read it over and over to her and I love the story and illustrations as well. She has shared the book with several of her cousins who have also thoroughly enjoyed it. Great children's books are hard to find and Duke Devlin the Daring Dogie is definitely one of those rare gems. A Great book!

IT'S ABOUT TIME somebody called the Incumbents out for taking a free ride on the American people. Why don't they pay into Social Secutity? Why do they have their own retirement plan at our expense? FOR LIFE!!

If I keep on going, I would be writing a book and not helping Paul and Mike.

This is a MUST read! Especially for the younger voter who can help in the process of "DUMP THE INCUMBENTS!"

This is a charming, wonderful collection of comix and interviews. I was loosely familiar with some of artists, but each section was a revelation. Especially appealing to me was the *range* of work -- from finely commercial to somewhat primitive. You sense a diverse world full of surprise and life -- who could ask for anything more?

Detailed interviews of many lesbian comics authors with excerpts of their work. Sometimes hilarous, sometimes sad, sometimes resonating strongly in strange places, Dyke Strippers is wonderful, and worth it almost only for the wild cover done by Diane DiMassa, authoress of Hothead Paisan, Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist.

"The Easter Bonnet Parade" is a "Strawberry Shortcake" Level 1 Station Stop book, designed to help younger readers learn to read. It's a pleasing Strawberry Shortcake story that can be enjoyed by any fan of the show.

Strawberry and her friends are celebrating Easter. They decide to put on an Easter parade --- an Easter bonnet parade to be exact. They all have hats they can decorate to make into fun bonnets, well, all except one. It turns out that Honey Pie Pony doesn't have a hat, so she's worried she won't be able to join in. But Strawberry and her friends work together to help Honey Pie.

Best guide to the real Portland
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-23
Guides to city restaurants and shops are a dime a dozen. How many Web sites were propped up in the late 1990s, purportedly to answer just this simple question: where is a good place to eat/shop? About a trillion dollars worth. And yet, in 2004, the answers are not to be found online but instead in this simple, elegant guide, eat.shop.portland. Not only can you read this purse-sized treasure from cover to cover (like a day and night on the town!), you can trust it as a barometer of cool. Unlike some travel writer's 12-hour synopsis of a town that they just parachuted in on, Wellman dishes out a hip-yet sensible guide to the real Portland that is as well-designed as it is well-written.

eat.shop.portland should be required reading for anyone about to entertain guests from out-of-town or in from the suburbs.

The Go-To Guide Book

eat.shop.portland is a true treasure trove of what Portland has to offer. If you're looking for authentic portland-style restaurants and shops, this is the book to own. I've been here seven years and there are places in it I have never heard of ... but can't wait to try. In my opinion every Portlander should have a copy of eat.shop.portland with them at all times.

Egyptian Mythology: MORE than a Young Reader's Companion
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-08
Pat Remler's Egyptian Mythology A to Z is a gem! More than an encyclopedic approach to a fascinating period, this little jewel brings to life the ancient voice by presenting excerpts from sacred texts and literature. "We set off for the mines of the pharaohs..." begins the famous Myth of the Shipwrecked Sailor. "Give praise to Ptah, lord of Maat..." prays an ancient who is identified by his own voice "I am a man who swore falsely....and he (Ptah) made me see darkness by day..... beware ...refrain from uttering Ptah's name falsely..." The text, articulate and informative, is accompanied with lovely line drawings by the author's sister, Mary Jordan, as well as interesting photographs of Egyptian temples and artifacts. The entries are rich and far from general, offering often less known facts on this exciting period. Offerings on the Book of Gates,on the Amduat, the book of that which is in the underworld, go beyond brief identification. Each presents an account of the perilous journey taken through these mythic realms, through the hours, and gates that take one beyond. The presence of an index, seldom present in books with this A-Z format, adds to the ease of cross reference. There are thus no less than 25 entries for the god Thoth, as well as some 35 for the goddess Hathor. A two page bibliography points the reader to scholarly works for a more in depth study as well as future investigation. Egyptian Mythology lacks for nothing save a title which would better identify its true nature. I suggest the following: Egyptian Mythology A to Z: More than a Young Reader's Companion.

Egyptian Mythology A toZ, A Young Reader's Companion

Review Date: 2000-09-09
I found Pat Remler's Egyptian Mythology A to Z to be one the easiest ways to learn almost everything there is to know about ancient Egyptian mythology, and then some. What I liked best was that the author not only concentrated on the Pantheon of Ancient Egyptian Gods and their mythological histories, but Remler also included in it's encyclopedia-like format such entries as Magical Colors seen in tomb paintings. I will never look at another Ancient Egyptian scene, whether in a tomb, museum or book without knowing a great deal more about the significance of what each specific color actually means. Everything is included here, from covering the alleged "Curse of Tutankhamen" to a descriptive analysis of the various Crowns worn by the Pharaohs. I found the book's short Introduction to be another amazement. In a matter of three or four pages the author covers a time span of some 700,000 years, from Egypt's pre-history, when very little was happening, to the sudden explosion of culture less than 5,000 years ago. There is an easy to follow timeline for Ancient Egypt and numerous line drawings of the gods and goddesses by Mary Jordan. The splendid photographs by the author made this book, for me, a real pleasure to read. It is a handy, alphabetically arranged reference book that will surely be of interest to anyone in pursuit of reliable knowledge of the subject. It's a book for everyone, from being "A Young Reader's Companion," as its subtitle suggests, to the scholar in need of refreshing his or her memory of Ancient Egypt's mythological vastness. All the mystery and magic is here, in this very well written book. I have long been an armchair Egyptologist myself, have been since I was twelve-years-old. How I wish I had come across such a book as this, over half a century ago.
