My husband is an amateur blacksmith, so I'm often looking for creative and informative books to give him about this craft. I bought this book based on its beautiful cover and the great narrative I read at Amazon about its contents. Once my husband received it, I was even more sure I'd made a good purchase. He LOVED the book - got so many great ideas from it - and found numerous helpful websites and practical applications. This is a must-have for any blacksmith you may know.

Well Done!!

I preordered this book, not really knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. This book is a wonderful collection of photographs of modern blacksmiths works. It has a lot of those smiths who have become known as masters within the community. It was well worth it, just to see what other smiths were doing.

Have you ever found yourself wondering, "What really is the difference between Ice Cream, Sherbet, Sorbet, and Gelato?" or "Is Allspice just a blend ALL Spices?" or "Do I really need to sift my flour?" All of these questions, and many, many more are easily answered in this amateur chef's bible. Even though it is primarily a reference book, I've frequently been drawn into reading parts of it like a novel while doing a "quick" check of some obscure ingredient.

Whenever I have a question about food, cooking, or ingredients, this is the first place I turn. When I'm through, I frequently find myself exclaiming to my wife, "This really is a GREAT book!"

From Abalone to Zucchini, this colorful reference guide to all things culinary is a must for every kitchen!

I have had this book for 20 years. It is the most common wedding present I give, not to mention the most thankful one. Everything anyone, from beginner to everyday cook, needs to know about preparing food is in this book.
Not just delicious recipes, but common sense needs, like how to prepare an artichoke to the perfect hard boiled eggs. Timetables for boiling meat and cooking beans. This book includes grilling methods, making pasta, freezing times, and microwaving fresh veggies.
Constant tips are placed throughout the book, how to buy a turkey, cooking with oils, selecting cookware, even coffee roasts.
The pictures are stunning, the recipes are succulent.
It's always important to have a book in front of you that you can count on for anwers when cooking is important to you.
I recommend this book now, and have for the past 20 years!

When I was a young child I made my mother read this book to me just about every night. I love this book so much! I have noticed the price is rather high for the book and I would like to know why. If anyone knows please drop a message at hoperahmachine@hotmail.com.
This is a great book for preschool to kindergarten aged children. Enjoy it if you can find one.

My Kitchen Bible!

This is a wonderful kitchen resource! My most-used cookbook. It is an A-Z encyclopedia of every food you can think of, as well as many I never heard of! It includes comprehensive coverage on growing/raising food, the different methods of storage applicable, creative and unique recipies for every food item. There are chapters on freezing, cold storage, root cellers, canning, drying, butchering. It is so exhaustive that there is much in it I personally do not care to know, such as how to skin and prepare squirrel, opposum, chevon, making head cheese, cooking with frogs, heart and pig's feet. I said it was exhaustive! But it also has great stuff for grinding and cooking with whole grains, whole foods, natural sweetenings, making yogurt and cheese, natural leavenings, etc. I will be buying a copy to give to my daughter when she is older. This book is a homesteader's dream come true.

First, thank you Amazon - for adding pictures of the cover and inside. The written description of the content, as well as information about the author, is certainly something everyone looking for a book they haven't read would hope to find.

My ten year old granddaughter read this book aloud to me, stopping for help with words she couldn't pronounce. After each illness, we discussed what each of us had learned. The way these illnesses were introduced and defined kept my granddaughter's interest. And I was proud to hear her say that kids shouldn't make fun of anyone who has a mental illness, or be ashamed to be their friend. Perhaps it should be in elementary and middle school libraries!

Psychoanalysis has been increasingly influence by constructivist thinking. Various theorists have contributed to the psychoanalytic understanding of the way in which reality is constructed. However, this literature is scattered, confusing, and it is difficult for the casual reader to gain a firm intellectual grasp of the pertinent issues. The author has done a tremendous service by overviewing this complex and often cryptic literature, contrasting the chief theorists, and presenting his own conclusions. A gem of a book that I would highly recommend to anyone who is trying to gain a meaningful understanding of this difficult but vital topic.

Challenging, infornmative, engaging, very well written.

How wonderful this book was translated and updated! In its first edition in Spanish, many important Cuban musicians were omitted, mainly due to US-Cuban politics. Orovio's thorough guide gives the 411 on some of Cuba's most important and prolific musicians - including those living in the U.S. and elsewhere, including biographical as well as musicological information. A must have for anyone who loves Cuban music!

The Days of the Bitter End

"A TIMELESS TRIBUTE TO THE YOUTH WE ALL ONCE HAD"
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-05
Jack Engelhard has written a compelling saga of the way it was when our dreams took wings and the only limitations were those set by our imaginations. Seen through the eyes of four very different young people...(Ben...Holacaust survivor and Israeli Army veteran...Ritchie...guitar-strumming, happy-go-lucky young man from the upper middle classes of Connecticut...Cliff...nationally known celebrity from the streets of Philadelphia...and Louise...the girl of every guy's dreams...and a rising star in her own right)...he takes you to the very knife edge of The New Frontier... Greenwich Village...the Village of Protest...of Dylan...Baez...Collins...Cosby...Streisand...of Lenny Bruce and George Pryor.

If you remember those halcyon days first hand...this book will REALLY bring them back. Having yet again just finished the book, their ghosts seem so firmly planted in my head... the nostalgia becomes unbearable at the last...because you can see them...see them all in their youthful innocence. And so you weep for them... and as you weep for them you weep for your own lost youth... not only your unrealized dreams from that time, but the dreams that were realized...however briefly...and then vanished with youth itself. And then you weep for the loss of the ability to dream...the realities of late middle age that surround you...grateful indeed for so many blessings you still have...but undeniably conscious of the fact that there are no more youthful dreams to dream...and you have just been reminded by an extremely gifted author just how good it felt to dream, and to share those dreams with other vibrant young people...so full of themselves and full of their times... so full of life and love and laughter.

If you're the slightest bit curious about the environment in which some of the entertainment giants above got their start, or just wonder what the fuss was all about back in the Sixties...then this book is the most scintillating, engaging, soulful, authentic work you can buy...bar none..no exceptions. Granted it is a story told through the medium of part fact, part fiction...but it is 100% TRUTH. I know... I was there. The author was there too, though I didn't know him at the time.

But be warned...from the moment you first partake of this intoxicating wine of American Youth at its most hopeful...most full of dreams...most invigorated and confident...you WILL NOT be able to put it down. You'll laugh...you'll cry...you most likely will love and you just might hate...but you WILL NOT be able to put it down. Jack Engelhard will launch you on an emotional rollercoaster of a story that runs the gamut...the fates of the characters run the gamut...the mood of America runs the gamut...the character of the times portrayed runs the gamut.

A true literary classic penned by a literary genius of the first water. Yes...you'll want to feel and do many things as the story unwinds...but you will not put it down until....The Bitter End. Five Stars
John W. Cassell

John W. Cassell is the author of five novels on the American Counterculture of the 1960's-1970's: Crossroads: 1969, Odyssey: 1970, Hell's Quest: 1971, DeVilliers County Blues: 1972 and An Aquarian Tragedy [the last written under the pen name of james Mundell and about 1970], as well as several "Amazon Shorts" short stories...all available at Amazon.

If you missed the 60s -- if you missed the excitement, the passion, the radicalism, the love-will-conquer-all hippies, the injustices, the honesty, the thrills, the politics, the greed, the hopes and dreams -- this book brings it all alive. Not quite the same as having been there, but no book I've read goes nearly so close to the real experience. If you were there, in the 60s (feel fortunate), you can't help but love reliving this unfotgettable story, with its captivating characters and the sensual three-way love affair at its core. It fascinated me from start to finish. I could not put it down.
