I love this book, it is so worth the money!! The activities (which include Language Arts, Math, Science, Music, Art, Social Studies, games, and recommended reading book lists) are all arranged in alphabetical order. Each unit starts with a big black and white uppercase letter page to color (and learn), the next page is tracing practice of the uppercase and lowercase letter, then come all of the activity pages, about 12 pages of activities for each letter! You will NEVER run out of ideas and learning opportunities with this book! Take it from me, I've spent a load of money on several workbooks, flashcard sets, this that and the other, to use with my 4 year old little boy, but honestly this book is all we need, it covers everything! And the activities are really fun and enriching, not boring! Happy learning!

I bought two of these books. One for my wife (and me too) and one for my best friend's familt that goes to San Jose Sharks games with us. My wife is already quoting things I didn't know. The other family loves it as well. Plus it's compact, so you can stick it in your back pocket and bring it to the game or have it on the coffee table next to the TV watching the game. Great book.

The perfect gift!

I love this book and would give it to anyone who is interested in hockey.
I didn't really know much about hockey until this year when I decided to find out why my husband liked it so much, what's the big deal? The action is pretty exciting, althought I'm not into the fighting. So my husband gave me this book so I could look up all sorts of things about the game. What's a hat trick? or icing? There's a rink diagram showing what the different lines mean and areas on the ice. I even stumped my husband with some trivia about awards.
This book lives on my coffee table.

Amazing encyclopaedia for doing the "right" things in CSR
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-20
Being interested in CSR and attending CSR lectures in a British university I was amazed about the (academic) quality and comprehension of CSR related terms covered in this encyclopaedia.

Beside explaining essential basic terms the authors also focussed on related terms which build together an excellent understanding of CSR, its extent and impact for academics as well as practitioner.
The book fulfils these theoretical and practical expectations by including the expertise and experience of 102 authors. These authors are specialists in particular CSR related areas resulting in specific definitions and descriptions.
It became apparent that the books' editors made a competent and up to date choice when compiling authors and terms defined in this encyclopaedia.

So every page of this book delivers valuable information, written by specialists who are well known from everyone interested in CSR. Therefore this book combines "right" terms with "right" authors for doing "right" things in CSR.

Everything you need to know about CSR

I really like this book! For a start the 300+ terms and organisations etc are clearly laid out in a jargon free format in alphabetical order. Secondly, many of the terms are described by the experts in the field, for example Mary Robinson on Human Rights or Archie Carroll on CSR. This is the first time I've seen such an accessible and comprehensive guide to CSR, sustainability or business ethics including everything from carbon taxes, bio diversity to sweatshops, sin taxes and Greenwashing. The authors seemed to have tried to include everything - there's even a "Zen of CSR in there as well! I can thoroughly recommend this book to anybody interested in CSR!

A 'treasure chest' for everyone interested in CSR!

Finally! Probably everyone interested in and working with or on Corporate (Social) Responsibility will be glad that this publication came out. Indeed, it was about time: In the last two decades, CSR has become an `en vogue' topic and more and more dealt with in theory and practice. However, many misunderstandings, misinterpretations and prejudices circulate on the contents of CSR. The "A to Z" manages to clarify many aspects of CSR and paves the way for a common starting point by providing for a holistic approach. Hopefully, it will thereby contribute to further inhibit mere window dressing by just including the term CSR in corporations' annual reports and media info.
The book can serve as an important basic tool for everyone dealing with CSR. It covers a wide range of topics and core terms related to CSR (like human rights and the environment) and defines the most important concepts, codes, organisations and landmarks. It therefore lives up to even a critical reader's expectations as well as to the various developments in regard to CSR and the broadness and pluralism of the CSR debate. It is very useful encyclopaedia which can be used by students of all fields, academics, researchers, NGO workers, business people etc. because indeed it uses a `common language' which is understandable independently of the specialization of the reader. Luckily, the information provided is neither influenced by interests nor superficial, yet the encyclopaedia-style allows for precise and neutral information and definitions which are based on contributions by over 100 experts, so to say the crème de la crème of the CSR-community. Nevertheless, many of the definitions include pros and cons and sometimes critical remarks which allow for further food for thought and are an important input to an independent forming of opinion by the reader.
Despite the fact that the "A to Z" includes contributions mainly by authors of Anglo-American or Western European origin, it is by no means ethnocentric or cultural relativistic - in the contrary, it can be used by a de facto international CSR community. However, it would have been nice to have a universal encyclopaedia with contributors with various national backgrounds. Maybe the next edition will consider this. Though the price might seem shocking at first sight, I think the purchase of the "A to Z" makes a valuable long term investment for anyone really interested in the subject.

Christine Ammer's outstanding text on foreign musical terms is concise, clear, and handy. I require it for all my students, and use it regularly myself.

I only wish it would come in mass-market size and LEATHERBOUND, so that it could fit more easily in an instrument case and could stand up to the regular beating it takes (because I have it with me at all playing jobs).

This is a FANTASTIC reference for your music library. I have found many relatively obscure musical terms listed in this book. Ammer has done a great job compiling from a variety of languages, and includes helpful things like common variations of terms and abbreviations. I've purchased this book as a gift for college-bound music majors, and it has been much appreciated.

This book is a must read for all people, not just African Americans. Understanding that there are definately minor physiological/genetic differences among ethnic groups is critical to receiving and providing healthy treatment for disorders. Knowing what vitamins and minerals are key to human development gives the reader an informed perspective on how to change diet to increase the standard of living. The author has made a solid effort to inform the reader.

This is a wonderful book that details a medical perspective of differences between Africans and Caucasians and will point you in the right direction toward health. It is fantastic to read a book written by someone who has had the "benefit" of western training and realizes the gaps in "knowledge" in that system.

Dr. Jewel Pookrum does a marvelous job of chronicling chemical reactions, differences that are melanin-related and opens the doors to a deeper understanding of health. This is information that we as a people, MUST grasp before the human genome biological apocalypse is released.

I recommend also any books by Queen Afua and African Holistic Health : Complete Herb Remedy Guide, Disease Treatment, Nutrition, Diet, Wholistic Perspectives, African Herb History, Self Diagnosis by Llaila O. Afrika.

Top Notch Watercolor Book--Also Beautiful

Review Date: 2007-11-10
This is a BEAUTIFUL book by Adelene Fletcher, who also wrote her A to Z book on painting flowers in watercolor. Both of these books are tops on my list of great watercolor books to learn painting from.

This book begins with the materials and pallet she uses, then she teaches you the techniques you will use in the rest of the book, such as washes, brushwork, various wet in wet methods such as water-spotting, crisp defined shapes, crisp edges, glazing, creating soft blends, various wet on dry methods such as softening with a tissue, softening with a sponge,,various texturing methods such as spattering, granulation, sponging, wax resist, feathering , Other techniques taught are reserving and reclaiming whites and the various ways this is done, and negative painting, using body color to define the lighter shapes, and highlighting.

The teaching of the techniques Fletcher uses are followed by a two page spread of the 26 trees that she will teach you to paint in this book Each tree lesson is given in a fully detailed step-by-step sequence with color close ups of each step, Also given are close ups of the branch structure without leaves, and the leave appearance and coloration of that particular tree along with it's seed shape and coloration. Each tree lesson gives the pallet used for that exercise. The end each tree lesson has two pages of a painting of that tree in close up view in a nature scene, allowing you to have a good idea of what the final painting should like with it's trunk structure and texture, branch structure and leaves.

This is an excellent book for watercolorists at all levels. Beginners will benefit greatly from its easy to follow lessons on the various techniques used. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and are based on the lessons she gives you in the beginning techniques section, where she demonstrates how these are used in particular to paint trees and their various parts. The paintings of the various trees are beautiful, and the instructions with close-ups of the detailed steps are well written and easy to follow.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning watercolor techniques and also, for the mores advanced student on learning more detail about specific trees and their structure and textures. It is also a beautiful book to enjoy for the paintings alone. GREAT BOOK!!"

This is an excellent book for watercolorists interested in learning the difficult art of painting one of the most difficult and yet common subjects.
Starting with colors and methods Adelene Fletcher goes on to describe in some detail how to paint a variety of common and not so common trees. The joy too is in the little paintings on some of the pages which illustrate the leaves, fruit or whatever, just thrown in for fun!
If you are interested in painting in watercolors - you should buy this book - you will learn a great deal whatever your level of skill is.

I was given this book as a graduation present when I left Malawi, the setting of the book, to come to university in America. I adore this book. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful pastels. The colors are fantastic and the people have wonderfully expressive faces. The story is sweet. I can identify with the main character because of my upbringing as a white child in Southern Africa. However, I think that the experience of moving away from home and being homesick is a universal one. For any child, being taken from a familiar to a strange situation is difficult. The only drawback the story might have in that sense is that the main character is able to return to Malawi at the end of the story. While that is hopeful, there are children who will not be able to return to their former homes or lives. For those children, this could be a hard book.

There are several examples of Chichewa, the national language of Malawi, in the book. All of the words are used accurately. The Chichewa words are not difficult for a parent or teacher reading the book as all of the words are pronounced phonetically.

My parents gave me this book for Christmas a few years ago, and, although I am a grown man, and I left Africa 15 years ago now, this book makes me cry, and want to return home. Like Peter, I'm a white African, although I'm a Kenyan. I miss Kenya, and even if I never get a chance to return, it will always be Home.

This book is a great gift for "third culture" kids, as well as for those trying to understand what it's like for kids to leave home and move far away.

My daughter and I were simply delighted with this book, and we are voracious readers of tales from foreign lands. For the protagonist, a little American boy born in Africa, Africa is not another place, a foreign country, but the home that he knows and loves, described poignantly through the eyes of a child. It is the USA that is foreign and strange to him, although he acclimates with a sort of resigned acceptance. I won't spoil it by telling the end; I can only say that I hope you and your children enjoy it as much as we did.
