This book was a great help in writing my 10 page research paper on Edith Wharton. I really could not have done it without it! It was a great basic biography, and also offered critical views, which was great. However, buy a used copy. $55 is a little expensive for a book. I bought used and it was nearly new. Highly recommended!!
The definitive Wharton resource!

This book is amazing! It is a Wharton fan's dream! I was kindly sent this book by my dear friend in America and it has proved invaluable. As an English student, I will be writing my dissertation on the life and major works of this fantastic author, and this is exactly the kind of publication that will make the whole process not only easier, but enjoyable!
This is an excellent guide for Wharton fans and scholars alike. It comes with my full reccomendation! Whether reading for pleasure or for academic purposes, it is a remarkable book.

I love this book, it gives ideas and instructions on how to do everything from applique to simple weaving. The pictures are clear and very helpful in illustrating the techniques. Projects are rated from easy to intermidiate to challenging, and there are supply lists so you can have everything you need. I found it very inspiring in my work and hope to find other book by the author!

THE EMPEROR LAYS AN EGG is one of the most fact-filled books directed towards young children that I have come across. The book begins with a mother emperor penguin laying an egg and then goes on to explain how the egg is taken care of (mostly by the father), how the chick hatches, and how it grows until it becomes an adult. And the illustration appeal to children, containing a lot of blues that calm the nerves. I have just two criticims about the book. First, the book has so much information that younger readers will be overwhelmed. Much of the material will be far too confusing for a 1st grade reader. Most children won't be able to read all the material until they are in 2nd grade, but the book is marketed towards those in 1st grade and younger. Also, the illustrations, though peaceful, are kind of dull; the lack vibrance and vitality. Nevertheless, the book can be read to younger children and they will enjoy flipping through the pages looking at the pictures. THE EMPEROR LAYS AN EGG is a great non-fiction text to read to young children and a great gift for any child who likes penguins.

This is a wonderful fact-filled book that will appeal to toddlers and their older siblings as well. There are surprising facts: The father's instinct to balance an egg on his feet away from the snow is so strong, that "one emperor who doesn't have an egg shuffles around with a chunk of ice about the size of a softball." It's nice that both mother and father penguins get their due as hard-working parents. The mother must travel "waddle, waddle" ninety miles to the open sea (at less than one mile an hour) to get food after the egg is hatched. If lucky, she may find a "field of slick ice, and toboggan on her white belly to speed up the four-day trip. Swoosh! Swoosh!" (The author has a lot of fun with verbs!). The father stays with the egg for over two months in temperatures as low as -60 degrees F., and loses half of his body weight.
Some passages are longer and more complex than others, although in some way this widens the book's appeal. The pictures are boldly colorful and uncluttered (made from hand painted paper shaped formed into collages), my only complaint is that some there are too many pages of static penguins. True, this is the frozen North, but in other sections of the book there is more detail and action. Replete with interesting penguin facts and bright, friendly pictures, this is an excellent combination picture book/fact book.

"In late May, as an icy winter wind blows across Antarctica, a mother emperor penguin lays an egg. Plop! To keep the egg from freezing, she catches it on her feet and covers it with a flap of skin..." So begins Brenda Guiberson's fascinating and engaging story of life and survival in the coldest place on Earth. Mother and Father penguin take turns eating, traveling on a harrowing journey ninety miles or more to an opening in the Arctic ice to feed. Their mate is left behind, standing still for months to care for the egg and eventually the fluffy little chick, in the worst of winter. Finally as the short summer begins, the baby chick leaves his parents' feet, grows black and white waterproof feathers, and learns to swim and feed on its own. Soon the winter will come, the ocean will freeze, and the emperor penguins will return to their mating grounds to begin the process again..... Ms Guiberson's easy to read and well researched text is chock full of detail, interesting facts, drama, and even appropriate sound effects, and is enhanced by Joan Paley's captivating artwork. Together word and art paint a marvelous and intriguing portrait of the life cycle of the emperor penguin. Perfect for youngsters 5 and older, The Emperor Lays An Egg is non-fiction at its very best, and a treasure of a book that definitely shouldn't be missed.

The other books I have purchased by this author were excellent so I bought this one also and am very happy with my purchase. Renovating our home has been a MAJOR expense and project so we wanted to make sure that we did everything in the most energy efficient and cost effective way. There were countless tips and methods to greatly reduce our utility bills with the renovation work that we learned in this book. We had a house builder do the renovation work we couldn't do ourselves but we still used this book to in a way give advice to the builder to do the renovations so they will cut our electric, heating and air-conditioning bills. Our builder was quite surprised at how much we knew about energy efficient renovations. But we can't take the credit since it was all learned from this book. Highly recommended book if you're want to learn how to greatly reduce your utility bills.

When my wife and I wanted to make a lot of repairs and upgrading to our home we read many books on the subject before starting the work or hiring contractors. This book was a great help since it contains a ton of expert advice, research, and information about the best ways to make repairs and improvements (both minor and major upgrading) in the most cost effective manner. The added bonus of the information in this book is that we learned how to reduce our utility consumption by about half! The topics show you how to make all the updating with energy efficiency in mind at no extra cost to do the work. That we a great bonus to the instructions. Some of the work opn our house were major updates and had to be done by professional builders and contractors. With what we learned from this book my wife and I were able to double check the estimates and work performed by the pro contractors to make sure they did everything the correct and most energy and cost efficient manner. We did detect some aspects of the job that we told the contractors to do differently from what we learned in the book(instead of them cutting corners to increase their own profits). All in all - great book and great choice for any home owner serious about make energy saving home improvements!

I used this book, coupled with some dry, boring, pretentious linguistics book, in my Anthropology class "Language and Culture." Goshgarian did a wonderful job putting it together. It would be a great tool for any student of sociolinguistics. Some of the books for sociolinguistics have forgotten who they're writing to; they try so hard to sound intelligent and end up making themselves look foolish when nobody understands. This book however, completely avoids that. Goshgarian should be applauded for this work. I can't wait for the next edition to come out!

This book was a gift for me before I became a parent - it is so artistically beautiful that it belongs in the collection of every person who has ever believed in fairies and plans to share them with their own children.
My son became enchanted with the fairy book and very importantly, the fairy house, at a very early age. Lately, we have been using the fairy house for our messages and presents for and from the tooth fairy (fairy dust is very helpful for this purpose too) and this book is still a favorite read when we work on our ABC's.
Ms Keith's imaginative and expansive use of vocabulary and rhymes is so beyond the normal course of children's books, and the artistry is excellent. This is one to keep and pass down to grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I've been an SAP ABAP programmer for nearly 10 years and am very comfortable with the traditional SAP programming model. My exposure to Java has been limited but when SAP announced that their latest version of SAP Web Application Server (WAS) would include a Java stack I knew it was time to dust off those old Core Java volumes I had lying around. However Java is a moving target and my Java 1.2 manuals are hopelessly out of date. A friend suggested I take a look at this book.
The Object Oriented extensions to ABAP were based on Java so a lengthy tome on all the ins and outs of Java was not what I was looking for. I needed something concise and to the point that would not "talk down to me" but would get me up to speed quickly on what I needed to know about Java from an SAP programmer's point of view.
I really believe that this is that book. Mr Rooney covers a very large subject at a fair pace and with a good sense of humor that keeps the reader engaged. Topics are explained from a SAP programmer's point of view (as per the book's title) which in itself is quite unique. Even the complex subject of EJBs is explained with just the right amount of info.
Highly recommended.

I own this book and as a fellow SAP professional I can only highly recommend it. I have used it and will continue to use it until I get the Java thing down.

If there's ever a vegetable, you see in the market but don't have a clue about how to prepare, this is the book to have with you or at home. It tells the history, several ways to cook, how to serve, and how to best appreciate usual and unusual varieties of well known and not so well known vegetables. I've been able to happily sample many new delicacies because of this book alone. I wish it was not out of print. I've given it to many, many friends and relatives as gifts.

Book was a little more used than described, but hey for the price it couldn't be beat. To bad my sylabus was wrong and the professor changed the edition. Anyhow, seller was excellent. Fast shipping and I would reccommend.

This text was VERY helpful. The illustrations and examples were enough to explain the topic without havung to read the entire book.. Also the problems given at the end of each section were very good. Some were tough; however, the author starts you out with easy problems and works up to the more difficult ones. This text definitely is a good learning aid.

I used this textbook for my first accounting class and it was by far the best. Examples are all spelled out step by step and the numerous exercies and problems contribute to a higher level of understanding. Buy the workbook offered. It will save you a lot of time normally spent setting up the problem. Much better then some of the higher level books I have used.

I refer to this Encyclopedia so often, that my copy has begun to get completely worn-out!
The photos in this book are in black and white, but that is actually fine with me, because as I see it, most Encyclopedia's photos are in black and white anyhow (eg: Brittania).
This Wharton Encyclopedia also cross-references well.
And on top of this, included in this Encyclopedia is a wonderful Bibliography.
As you can see by the various Sellers' listings, this is not an expensive Encyclopedia. Personally, I feel that this book is worth much more than the going rate.
Worth the money, for sure!
