A problem book written for the not so ordinary mortal mathematicians. A problem book for the above ordinary students and teachers as well. I like this book and I would treasure this book in my lectures. Similar books like this is what I like to pass on to my wards. Many thanks and more power to you! Do email me on books of similar content. An extra-ordinary book containing jewels of mathematical thoughts for students and teachers alike. I love this book.

When I participated in the IMO I had to download the past IMO problems from the Internet and of course I had no access to the short list problems. Too bad I didn't have this before 2002, but I still like the IMO-type problems and I had to buy this. Of course you must have this book if you're training for the IMO.

Outstanding collection of problems

This book contains roughly 1900 problems in 45 years of IMO history. Most of the problems are accompanied with a solution. This is an excellent resource for anyone preparing for a high calibre math contest such as olympiads or the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition.

This book also has an extremely comprehensive collection of definitions and theorems which span from analysis to algebra to combinatorics in the first part of the book, which is a nice summary of tools useable on math contests and in math courses.

Rare collection of IMO problems/solutions in one volume

46-year compendium of all the IMO shortlist and longlist problems. This is a rare book as none of the other IMO problem books so far covers both long and short-list problems.

The book has a complete listing of all long and short list problems but only provides solutions to shortlist problems as the book is already thick enough as it is. Would be great if the authors could expand the book or have a sequel to cover the other equally interesting longlist problems.

As expected, this is a very expensive Springer-Verlag book. Highly recommended though.

A most serious book that opens new dimensions of understanding these strange and intriguing phenomena. I learned a lot from reading it. Lafayette explains the whole aspects of UFOs and aliens from different angles: Science, Quantum Physics, Metaphysics, Astro-Physics, Psychology, Hypnosis! Abductees accounts...encounters with aliens!!!HEY! That's more than enough! Get the real picture and begin to use your mind when you approach the UFOS topics. This magnificent book will help you in this direction.

Another masterpiece by my favorite author, Mr. De Lafayete. He approached the phenomena from all the angles, science, physics, hypnosis, metaphysics, philosophy, religion..the whole nine yards! A great book.

With simplicity and integrity, the author provided ample evidence about the existence of UFOs. He clearly explained how an UFO functions, and described all the technology used to fly these machines. The chapters on abduction and the role of hypnosis are fascinating. The book is very convincing far from absurd claims and stories hard to believe. In brief, this book is reliable and essential for both the believer and skeptic. Get your copy.

A MASTERPIECE! GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION.

INSIDE A UFO. ALIEN ABDUCTION, HYPNOSIS, PSYCHIATRY, QUANTUM PHYSICS AND RELIGIONS FACE TO FACE

As always, Maximillien de Lafayette as an author and a scholar is careful, intelligent and observant. So far, he wrote 10 books on extraterrestrials' civilizations, UFOs and one encyclopedia on the best ufologists. But this book is the most authoritative one. Because, he approaches UFOS, aliens, hypnosis and abduction under different angles. It means he presents the subject according to science, quantum physics, religion, psychiatry and theories of ufologists. The book will please both the skeptics and the believers. There are no extraordinary claims and confessions by "crazy" abductees nor weirdo stories. De Lafayette explains these phenomena according to the greatest minds of our modern times. The book presents the opinions of the leading figures in science, medicine, religions and ufology. The author invites you to be the judge based upon what you have read. That is the correct way to understand UFOs, abduction and aliens. You cannot put down the book. Probably you will finish reading it without stoping...you will read every page of it and go and look for another book written by Maximillien de Lafayette. In the books, a great number of psychiatrists, astrophysicists, believers and debunkers explain their theories. Then you become to wonder who is right and who is wrong, because both, the believers and skeptics seem to be right on. Each group comes up with convincing arguments. This is what I like about Maximillien de Lafayette's books; always objective, unbiased and informative. I could easily say, that this book is one of the best books ever written about UFOs and alien abduction.

My grandson, Cameron Howard, has checked this book out from the library on numerous ocassions. Despite his generally responsible attitude toward returning books in a timely manner, he just can't get this book back when it's due. Why? Because he is busy reading and re-reading the book. He is captovated by the pictures. He is infactuated with the text and dazzled by the illustrations. He called me up to see if I could get him this book. This seven year old made sure I knew the exact spelling of the author's name and the illustrator's name! It's a hit among the 7 year old crowd!

The artwork lured me to this book. Each page has a marvelous rendition of a sea turtle's nesting saga. The storytelling is accurate but lyrical so even the youngest children will be captivated. I highly recommend it for parents and grandparents to give to the children they love--especially if you're headed for the beach!

My sister was visiting me, and I gave her my personal stereo and headphones, and the healing meditation on side 2 to listen to. When she was 15 she had a leg injury from a motorcycle accident. At 50 years old the leg pain still bothered her. The tape caused the pain's energy to exit through her foot -that was 2 years ago- and she has been pain free ever since. Now she tells everyone about it. I hope Joan sees this as I've wanted her to know. THANKS SO MUCH Joan!!!!

On side 1 of this cassette Dr Borysenko relates her spiritual awakening and examines the concept of angels in the mystical traditions of Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Christianity, as well as phenomenological evidence. She also discusses the near-death experience. The side is concluded with a discussion of the 4 archangels and their qualities: Uriel (Light of God), Michael (Likeness of God), Rafael (Healer of God) and Gabriel (Strength of God). On side 2 is a guided meditation where the listener is first relaxed, a prayer is offered and the 4 archangels are then invoked in turn. The harp and choir create a beautiful musical ambience. Repeated listening to this side of the tape brings about a refreshing feeling of serenity and rejuvenation. The more psychically aware one is, the stronger will be the feeling of angelic presences around you.

A well produced educational tool for learning to pray salaat (Muslim prayer). it is recommended for both those who have been so blessed by Allah to have been born into Islam and especially for those, like myself, whom Allah has led into Islam.
If you have ever wanted to learn and to understand Islamic prayer, this is one of the best books I have found. I am using it to help my daughter learn to pray.

This is a great book for someone who wants to better understand Islamic prayer rituals. Note that I say "better understand". If you have a pretty basic understanding of how to perform Salaat, this book will help you perfect it. If you are just beginning, this book can be a little hard to comprehend, especially if you have no one to help you out in person. The more you refer to it the easier it becomes to learn from it.

The pictures from many different angles make it easy to see the proper posture/position for each part of the Salaat & Wudu. The book is very helpful in that is has the prayers in Arabic Script, and English , as well as an English transliteration. The book also spells out the Do's & Don'ts for each step and points out common errors, too.

While there is no substitute for one-to-one learning, this book is a very valuable to to those of us who don't have that luxury. It is definitely worth purchasing if you need to perfect Salaat, learn how to perform Salaat, or if you are a non-Muslim who just wants to understand the "How & Why" of Islamic prayer.

Because this book is for some reason unaviable in Canada, I ordered it from amazon.co.uk and was not in the least disappointed. The book contains much less detail on the social conditions than his "Definitive History" in favour of a complete history of the case. While in some ways, this book contains less detail on certain aspects than Sugden does, it still, in my opinion, deserves to be ranked with it as the best comprehensive account of the case because it deals with much of the more recent research on the case and still provides a wealth detail, not all of which is in Sugden. The book provides an overview of the case, and covers the expected ground, with chapters on each of the canonical victims (including Tabram), Leather Apron, the letters (with significant detail on the Dear Boss and Lusk letters), the police, the reactions/climate in Whitechapel and London, and the Macnaghten Memorandum. All the chapters contain references to primary sources, mostly quotes from newspapers and police reports.
The suspect oriented chapters on the case include Druitt, Ostrog, Kosminski and Tumbelty. There is also a small section in the Kosminski chapter on Fido's "David Cohen" theory, which in my opinion, despite the dificulties, is the best one out there (I think the confusion of suspects and Anderson's veracity cannot be so easily dismissed). A final chapter briefly discusses, and refutes, various other suspect theories, including the royal theory, Sickert and Maybrick. There are also a few pages of Chapman/Klosowski in chapter 8. There are also the standard victim pictures in the book and pictures of the murder sites. There are also pictures of many of the notable police officers involved in the case as well as two photos of the Swanson marginalia.
Begg's account is, in many respects, as conservative as Sugden's, correctly I think. For example, they both express agnosticism about authenticity of the Lusk kidney, and deem Packer completely unreliable.
There are also differences between Begg's account and Sugden's, giving the book a certain enjoyable idiosyncratic flavour. Sugden and Begg both add Tabram as a probable sixth canonical victim (in my opinion quite rightly), and plausibly discount Smith, Coles and Mackenzie. However, while Sugden includes Millwood and excludes Wilson, Begg discounts Millwood and makes a case Wilson. One final, and perhaps the biggest, difference between the two is that Sugden argued that George Chapman/Klosowski is the only known suspect who could have been, and perhaps was, the killer, Begg all but discounts Chapman seems to tacitly favour Kosminski, although he rightly acknowledges a lack any definitive evidence. While Ripperologists will probably have to die not knowing anything for certain, one cannot help but obssessively keep working at it and Begg's work is basically the best we can do.

The odds are, if you are into the Jack the Ripper story, you're into more than just the plain facts. You're into the time period, true crime, and probably find psychology fascinating. Paul Begg incorporates all these into his book, compressing fact after fact into a page-turning suspense story...that really happened!
It goes in chronological order, explaining all kinds of national/international events shaping the Whitechapel district where at least 5 (yep, at LEAST 5) women of ill-repute were killed and horribly mutilated. Don't rely on stuff like "From Hell" if you want historical accuracy. Read this book and learn from an expert that makes things easy to understand.

After reading Philip Sugden's Complete History of Jack The Ripper, over ten years ago, I thought no one would be able to write a book that would compare to this. Paul Begg's first edition came out first (which I didn't read the first edition). However, he did a total update on the book, and because of all the praise it received I had to read it. He is an excellent writer, and even though I've read many books on the Ripper, he has a way of telling this story with total freshness. I also must give him credit for being totally unbiased in who may or may not have killed these 4,5,6,7,8, or 9 women. Is it a better book than Philip Sugden's? For me, it's too close to call. I think both have done a great job. Be sure to get the revised edition of this one.

If you're tired of reading all the fictional "non-fiction" works on Jack the Ripper, this is a book for you. It's very well-written in a straightforward style & sensibly organized, & thus easy to follow. Mr. Begg is a co-author of "The Jack the Ripper A - Z," one of the two "bibles" of Jack the Ripper study (along with Philip Sugden's "The Complete History of Jack the Ripper") & therefore Mr. Begg is one of the field's eminent experts. The book is not without conjecture, but conjectures are identified as such & not stated as "facts." This book is excellently produced from the spooky dust jacket to the quality binding & typeface. There are none of the typos, misspellings, or misconstructed sentences that are common in the many self-published Jack the Ripper books available. "Jack the Ripper: The Facts" comes together in a way that allows the reader to concentrate on what the author is writing rather than leaving the reader trying to figure out what the author "really meant" (but did not write). A wonderful book on a fascinating subject, this has to be considered one the top three of all Jack the Ripper books. The updated (2004) hardcover version is available through amazon.co.uk, it's been expanded to 550 pages, & has an excellent index & bibliography. Highly Recommended!

This is an outstanding reference for readers ranging from those having casual interest to serious Joyceans. All of Joyce's works are covered in some depth and the material on Ulysses and Finnegans Wake is fantastic. It includes chapter outlines and summaries. The book is also very good at providing concise summaries of people, places and things in or connected to Joyce's work. I wish I had discovered this book much earlier in my academic career.

Presents, in alphabetical order, brief (one paragraph to about 2 pages) synopses and explanations of people, places, themes, and phrases form several of Joyce's works, including his major novels and his poetry. Wonderful as either a tool for decoding Joyce, or as "skimming material." It's a treat to just wander through these pages, seeing explanations for `Finnegan' across from those for "Dubliners," a biography of T.S. Eliot one page after a description of the fictional "Earwicker."

Includes over 800 entries, illustrations, synopses of books and chapters, biographies of Joyce and his contemporaries, bibliography, a very useful index, as well as the text of Jude Woolsey's ruling to lift the ban on "Ulysses." The writing is clear, wide-ranging, and complete without bogging the reader down in minutiae. Not as thorough as the encyclopedic "Ulysses Annotated," but very useful in disentangling Joyce and his works without great effort! Written by a Professor of Theology and English at Molloy College (and vice president of the James Joyce Society), and a professor of English at Marquette University.

Essential to understanding the writtings of Joyce is understanding the world he lived in. Bear in mind that all of his works were, more or less, either autobiographical, or were about the world he lived in. This compilation of the many details of Joyces life shows us the minutia that made up books like "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," "Ulysses," and "Finnegans Wake." If properly used, this provides the key to interpreting the dense allusions and motives of his impressive body of work. After perhaps the works of Tindall, Bishop and Campbell, this is the most usefull book you can get to help understand the works of Joyce.

Tons of fascinating information, plus guide to Ulysses!

Elvis, the Beatles and Marilyn Monroe have received the A to Z treatment in which every aspect of their lives and works have been reordered alphabetically, so it was only a matter of time that the mania would spread to lesser figures in our popular culture, in this case Mark Twain, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf.

This series of three books, originally published by Facts On File and now updated and reprinted by Oxford University Press, combines facts culled from the writers' lives and works, shakes them up thoroughly, and recasts them into easily locatable entries. The result is an addictive pleasure, a page-turning odyessy for anyone interested in learning more about their favorite writer.

At 304 pages, the Joyce volume is the smallest of the trio, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up by offering extensive commentaries on "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake." Those who have tried to read these modernist (or post-modernist, the argument still rages) classics have quickly recognized the need for assistance. For "Ulysses," the Joyce volume reprints Joyce's chart that lists each chapter's time frame, location, symbols, technics, organs, art and correspondences to the original. Each chapter is given its own entry, which describes the action, Joyce's intentions, and clairifies points of Dublin's history. As one who attempted "Ulysses" solo, and suffered for his sin, I can speak with authority that this volume would have saved me a great deal of agony. I only wish they had abandoned their schema and combined the chapter descriptions into a single, lengthy appendix.

No detail is too small to escape the editors. There are also entries on Gustave Flaubert, an influence on Joyce's writing style; Throwaway, the race horse whose victory in the Ascot Gold Cup figures in "Ulysses," and the Volta Cinema, Dublin's first movie theater, which Joyce helped to open.

In short, this guide can help the Joyce reader move through the complexities of his work without feeling like you've earned a Ph.D in comparative literature while you're doing so.

Leadership A to Z: A Guide for the Appropriately Ambitious

A brillant leadership guide.

Review Date: 1999-11-27
As written by J.O'Toole, "the purpose of this book is to identify clearly what leaders need to do in order to create high-performing, self-renewing organizations. While most leadership books focus on who leaders are (their character, personality, style, and charisma), the accent here is on what leaders do. The shift in emphasis has a practical intent : although it is possible for you to learn from what others do, it is highly unlikely that you can become someone you aren't."

In this context, O'Toole discusses and explores some concepts (like behavior, commitment, communication, controlling, delegation, ego, globalism, hierarchy, performance, repetition, team, trust, vision) with specific stories of some great leaders such as Percy Barnevik (ABB), Jack Welch (GE), Richard Teerlink (Harley-Davidson), Andrew Grove (Intel), Jan Carlzon (Scandinavian Airlines), Michael Boxberger (Korn/Ferry), Robert Galvin (Motorola), Lou Gerstner (IBM).

I higly recommend this alphabetically arranged practical leadership guide.

How to describe a book with this title? It is not a dictionary. It is not a sequential narrative. It is not an anthology of aphorisms or portions of previous publications. It is not a manual. (However, its title does make much more sense than would those of other books such as Chicken Soup for Dummies or Stan Laurel on Management.) What Leadership A to Z provides is "a guide for the appropriately ambitious." O'Toole believes that more can be learned from what effective leaders do (and how they do it) than from their personality and character. What do all effective leaders seem to have in common? What O'Toole characterizes as "appropriate ambition." Note the modifier. All of us have ambitions. (The most effective leaders assuredly do.) Within effective organizations, most of those involved seem to have both personal and organizational ambitions which nourish and sustain each other. At least these ambitions are not mutually-exclusive or even incompatible. Within the most effective organizations, these ambitions are almost (not quite) identical. Moreover, most of the time -- day to day -- most of those involved are leaders of leaders. That is, sharing ambitions which are appropriate to them as well as to their organization, together functioning as what Noel Tichy has described as a well-designed, carefully-maintained "leadership engine."

How should this book be read? One option is to read it sequentially from A to Z. That will work. However, my personal preference (and suggestion) is to re-visit the Contents (pages ix-xi) whenever there is a question to be answered, a problem to be solved, or a new perspective needed. You may find that the answer will reveal itself after you read (let's say) some/all of B, H, J, and T; perhaps reading some/all of A, M, R, and W will suggest a solution; as for gaining a new perspective, I often hop around, in and out, back and forth. Sometimes I locate or formulate one...sometimes I don't.

The book's content is rock-solid. The writing style (vintage O'Toole) has snap, crackle, and pop. The selection of individual items was, of course, arbitrary but the material seems cohesive...perhaps because, directly or indirectly, all of the items help to demonstrate "appropriate ambition" in action. Another way to approach the book is to pretend that you have just entered O'Toole's General Store. Perhaps you have a specific item in mind. Or perhaps you are just "looking around." Fine. Take your time. Check out the merchandise. No obligation to buy anything today. Come back again another time. You are always welcome. Next visit, perhaps, you'll need what you saw last time in Aisle 5. It's nice to know it's there. It's nice to know that some much else is also there, waiting to be of help to you.

O'Toole his a home run with this one!

The subtitle to this book explains the its purpose: "A Guide to the Appropriately Ambitious." The author lays out twenty-four aspects of leadership that he has gleaned from other authors and his own experience. The author's focus is not on leadership theory, but on what leaders actually do. It is a compelling read.

I liked it. This book is a compelling read. Since the author focuses on the pragmatic aspects of leadership, he gives the reader the necessary tools to hone his or her leadership skills. The format of the book, although difficult to follow at first, lends itself to quick review. Successful leaders will find this book helpful as a review of the principles which brought them success. For those who wish to become leaders, this is the best resource I have found. It clearly states what leadership is all about in a format that is easy to read and digest. The "no holes barred" approach to illustrations helps the reader see and understand the principles elucidated as O'toole names the names and tells the stories of corporate and non-profit leaders whose successes and failures he demonstrates.

Aside from a good review of the principles that I am trying to instill into my life, it has helped me in three ways. First, the discussion between strategic change and change management was very helpful. The author points out that every organization is faced with constant change, and change cannot be managed. Change management is short sighted and issue orientated, whereas strategic change looks for the long term and seeks to make change a part of the culture of the organization. Second, I appreciated the author's repeated emphasis on the courage of leadership. Being a leader puts one at risk, and as O'Toole succinctly demonstrates, most "leaders" would rather play it safe. Unless the leader is willing to risk failure and humiliation, he or she will never taste the fruits of leadership. Third, I will be using this book as a primer for my staff to teach them leadership principles. There are few books with such broad scope as this one.

How does this book help a pastor of a small church? Some church leaders would balk at this book because the author is looking for the "appropriately ambitious" and deals with secular business. Yet, leadership is leadership. If we as pastors do not have the engine of ambition beating in our hearts for the gospel of Christ, what in the world are we doing in the pulpit? And as long as our Bible Colleges and seminaries ignore the leadership issue and keep training in the "pastoral model", the church in the USA will continue its decline. Leadership is the key to turning the seeming inevitable decline in church attendance around. Until our seminaries and Bible colleges teach leadership, pastors will have to turn to the business community for help.

A Good Read!

This simple but effective book is written for a general audience with interest in managerial, supervisory and leadership concepts. The book is structured as a dictionary of terms relating to leadership. While some readers may like the A-B-C division of information, others may find the book somewhat disjointed, as the format forces you to skip around from idea to idea. But then, as author James O'Toole points out, readers are invited to seek the nuggets that appeal to them, letter by letter. The connective tissue that O'Toole lays between the entries is ambition, which he says is the single pre-requisite to leadership and the one common characteristic that all great leaders share. We [...] recommend this accessible summary of basic leadership principles, although hardcore readers of leadership literature might be better off elsewhere.

It's wonderful to see this back in print again. The LITTLE TIM books are all wonderful stories to read aloud, and Edward Ardizzone's loose and casual-seeming line and watercolor paintings are prefect. Don't miss this treasure!!!! Share it with a child.

An old, great one

This is a picture book in the classic tradition. It is for older "little ones", probably five to eight years. Tim has wonderful adventures and learns a lot from the captain, who is an admirable hero.

great book !

This is one of the best children's books I've read in a long time! My son and I were spellbound by the adventures of Tim, who wants to be a sailor. Both words and pictures create such a nautical feeling, you can almost smell the sea air as you read! Very exciting story, too! I think every little boy will want to go to sea after reading Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain!

...it must be good! When I spent some time in London, I got this book based on the recommendations of several Londoners. It truly took me everywhere. And, it's in bookstore and cornershops around London too. That's a testament to it's use and reliability. I'm going again soon and intend on purchasing the newest version!

The only London atlas used by true Londoners.

London A-Z, (pronounced "A to Zed" in the UK), is the essential guide to navigating the complex maze of streets that makes up London. This atlas contains every street, alley, passageway and cul-de-sac in the city, and you can't do without it if you live in, or intend to seriously explore the city.

The true testament to the quality of the atlas: It's the one thing you'll find in every delivery van, taxi cab and potential house-finder's car.

Absolutely Essential for anyone in London

If you do not want to get lost in London - buy one of these!! -they are invaluable to finding tube stations, Post Offices, Train Stations and for even just trying to figure out where you have ended up! I lived in London for 3 years and I still use one, every street is included so that wherever you end up you can quickly and easliy find your way. It also lists all the Post Codes, because some addresses in London may be just listed as SW7 - and to find out WHERE that is you can just look at the front map refeence or in the back index. Every street and tube station is listed in the index..and there is a handy Underground Tube Map on the back - ALL you need in London! Much easier to use than a map.
