Handy book with no-fail recipes

I love the handy size of this book and the ease of the recipes.

I've mostly made cream pies from this and they're delectable. The Chocolate Cream Pie and the Banana Cream Pie were both delightfully tasty; I had to control myself from devouring them in a day!

I also tried the combination of butter and shortening for the crust as well as the nifty tips for preventing soggy crusts. All winners, in my humble opinion.

Altogether, a good buy. Although there are no photos, be assured your efforts will be successful. Just like most of the America's Test Kitchen cookbooks, recipes here are foolproof.

Use this book and you will make wonderful pies! Our family loves the apple pie and the chocolate cream and the banana cream. But the best thing is the crust recipe. You'll get a reputation for really knowing how to make pies! This is a succinct little book at a minimal price. My only surprise is that they did not use Clearjel as a thickener. It's Great!

By following the directions in this book, I made my first successful pie after numerous semi-failures. Not only is the book thorough, it tells which ingredients work best (i.e. a combination of butter and shortening for a tender and tasty crust), and why one method is better than another. The pie recipes include a number of types. I want to try them all.

I was skeptical that this book was going to produce better pies than the ones I make out of How To Cook Everything or Williams Sonoma's Pies and Tarts but it does. From a thorough but brief discussion of why you use the ratio of fat to flour suggested and why you really use both butter and vegetable shortening (they melt at different temperatures so there is separation in the crust at more then one point in the baking, which makes the crust flakier), to discussions of the best types of apples to use for apple pie, and which spice combinations tested best. These are instructions from people who tested pies every way you can think of, and found out what worked best for each part, offered up with explanations of why it works best.

This is a concise, short book, and the best primer on pies you could ever have. It's going to make all my pie-making better, even when I dig back into the big books. People noticed an improvement from my already great pies with the first one I baked out of this small collection. Worth every penny.

I found this book to be a tremendous blessing. The many varied scenarios presented will surely have a touch point on every reader's life. Also, this diversity makes this the kind of resource that will be of timeless value as the book is revisited in future readings and life passages.

One of the most striking features of this resource is how well the scriptural references are applied in each scenario illustrated. This approach brings life and true meaning to biblical references in a simple and easy to understand manner that results in powerful life impacting revelation. As a result this book is a tremendous tool for the un-churched as well. By clearly identifying how God's Love, Grace and Mercy satisfy every need the reader is drawn closer to God, His blessing and His eternal salvation.

As my kids grow up and begin making their own decisions, it's hard to know how much advice to give. This book is a great way to gently offer good, solid counsel about life to young adults without preaching. The stories about real people captivated me and helped me understand the principles Dr. Linaman and Ms. Sowers conveyed. I appreciated the blend of biblical truth, sensible counseling information and "uncommon" sense. I'm giving it to my grown kids with one piece of advice - read it!

As a child I watched Bishop Sheen on tv with my family. It didn't mean so much to me at the time, except maybe for the humor, but as I've matured, it strikes a strong chord. I'm glad I stumbled upon the book. We've lost so much of the simple truth in life that it's a pleasure and a joy to get some back. If your faith matters to you, this book will be a valuable addition to your collection.

Although this book is nothing more than the scripts from a number of the most popular "Life is Worth Living" shows, it is an excellent read.

Bishop Sheen has a way of saying the most profound things with an easy-going, conversational style in most of his books, but especially so in this one--probably because he was talking to the television audience.

I haven't seen most of the episodes that are in this book, but I still enjoyed reading the chapters of even the few episodes that I had seen. It gave me a chance to capture the nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout the episodes.

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was perhaps the greatest orator of the twentieth century in the matters of morality and the like. His writings displayed a great inner creativity and understanding of the human mind. Archbishop Sheen never lowered himself to the heathen practices of finger-pointing, and profanity. Instead, he reinforced his beliefs with Biblical texts and comedic anecdotes of his own life. His ninety-one books and innumberable radio and televsion broadcasts allowed us a glance into his mind. The Pope John Pual II declared him "a devoted son of the Church." Very few reviews carry as much weight as that comment. I highly recommend this text to anyone of whom finds morality to be the highlight of life.

This book contains thirty-six talks from the first two seasons of the television series. They offer inspiration and guidance on problems with fear, suffering, prayer, work, friendship, and marriage. This volume has universal appeal to all people regardless of religious persuasion or walk of life. This book goal is to offer a tender of hope to people's ongoing struggles to achieve the fullness of life. His easy manner and natural style makes you want to continue reading. His talks on TV were much better because of his easy speaking manner. But what a wonderful way to read what you missed or remind you of his loving words.

Muchas gracias.

We are delighted to announce that ASD A to Z and Autismo A-Z have been awarded the Symbol of Excellence. The following review will appear in the April 2007 edition of Exceptional Parent magazine.

Autism Spectrum Disorders from A to Z: is one of our primary resources for understanding ASD. We like several things about this book. First, its authors have personal knowledge of autism. Emily's son, Tom, has ASD. Barbara is Tom's aunt. Emily and Barbara share Tom and what he has taught them with us. Second, we like the book organization. Every chapter begins with a statement of what the chapter contents will teach the reader. Each chapter closes with a summary of chapter themes and lessons. Third, the book is written in an informal and friendly style that is accessible to parents, families, teachers and other professionals and to persons who have ASD. Fourth, the format is engaging and easy to follow. The pages and print are large and the authors make liberal use of, bullets, life examples and sample letters and checklists. Fifth, this book is available in Spanish.

ASD from A to Z is a wonderful resource for families and professionals who have limited time for reading and research due to the demands of living life. The book does not try to be a complete resource. Instead it focuses on the process of identifying, testing for and diagnosing ASD. It helps the individuals with ASD and their family members understand the context of diagnosis, the diagnostic assessment tools used and the process of receiving and understanding the diagnosis itself. The authors provide resources and research suggestions for understanding the potential causes of autism and share how to form or participate in information sharing groups and ideas. [...]. This book has earned the EP Symbol of Excellence.

Jeffrey Marks' anthology "Magnolias and Mayhem" from Silver Dagger Press is another winner from that small publishing house. Some great short stories including authors such as Jeff Marks, Margaret Maron, Deborah Adams, Dean James and Elizabeth Daniels Squires. There are also separate stories by the self-styled "evil twins", [Barbara]Taylor McCafferty and Beverly Taylor Herald as well as Carolyn Hart, Jeff Abbot, Toni Kelner, etc. Fine stories for those who like their mysteries with a Southern touch, but with a healthy diversity in style and content.

The southern mystery sub-genre is known for its "gentle" belles that solve crimes by being polite "steel magnolias" who "delicately" find the clues that identify the criminal. This collection pays homage to the regional mystery of the south as each tale provides that genteel background disguising a rock solid individual or two.

The fourteen tales are all well written as expected from some of the sub-genre's leading authors. Each story provides a full picture of the area to include powerful characterizations and many amusing scenarios. None of the stories are weak though some are incredibly excellent like those of Carolyn Hart and Elizabeth Daniel Squires. Fans of the Southern crime story will fully enjoy this anthology intended for leisure reading over several cold nights.

This book deservedly has been praised by moms of overseas adoptees, but I would not hesitate to recommend it to any other type of parent. Every family should hope to know the blessing of the love Debbie and Brynne have for each other, which comes through on every page. The book benefits immensely from being illustrated by the author, who beautifully conveys her happiness in a way no third party could possibly capture.

"Mama's Wish/Daughter's Wish" speaks to a universal desire to be wanted, displayed here in a remarkable and memorable fashion.

I purchased the book directly from the publisher, Pebbleton Press, which is easily located online.

This is a really unique story written first by a mom for a daughter, and then the daughter added to their story. The Mom added things that all parents who adopt from a International country go though, the mountains of paperwork, has a few pages on what might happen a CCAA Matching room, getting the Fed Ex package with information on the newest member of the family.Staring at your photo, and sharing it with everyone family, friends and even strangers! There is a cute page sitting down in front of an already over flowing suitcase with items still needed to fit into that already packed suitcase! There are few pages on while we where in China shopping, getting your passport, medical exam and consulate appointment, that long plane ride home! Then you flip the book over it's the daugther's turn to add her little part of the story, which is really cute.

What is also nice about this book is that each page is also translated in Mandarin on what looks like a red 1 inch ribbon. The illustrations are very simple. This is a really special book and should be among one of the adoption classics!

I purchased this book as a gift for my friend, who is a single parent, and her 3 year old daughter, adopted from Hunan, China. The story mirrored their own experience with the overseas adoption process (wishing and waiting), and brought tears to my friend's eyes (and mine). The 'flip' story which was told by the author's daughter was priceless! What an incredible story of the love between parent(s) and child. Great gift and a terrific book to add to any child's collection.

If you could have only one Mark Twain reference guide on your shelf, this would be the book to choose. This two volume set could more properly be titled EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT MARK TWAIN BUT NEVER EVEN KNEW ENOUGH TO ASK. It is a massive desk dictionary whose first volume provides plot summaries of all of Twain's works, describes each of his characters, and includes critical background materials. The second volume is a desk dictionary of every person, place, and topic pertaining to Twain's life and writings, along with a very useful chronology of his entire life, and an extensive index. Mark Twain lovers will read these volumes cover to cover with pleasure and then refer back to them for years to come. Those seeking a more informative detailed analysis of this work may go to the Mark Twain Forum and read the review written by esteemed Mark Twain scholar Alan Gribben.

Fine reference.

Mark Twain is justly regarded as the first modern American novelist, but he was also a fabulous character; one of the most prominent figures of the 19th century, who seems to have gone everywhere and met everyone, and wrote about it all.
The present work is a fitting introduction to his life and works for those new to Twain, and a boon companion for those deep into the pleasures of one of the original minds of American literature.
Rasmussen has alphabetically arranged the major works with synopses, analyses of characters, people, places, and events Clemens knew, and more, with illustrations, chronology, list of Twain's works, reading list, and an admirable index.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in Twain, American writing, humor, or 19th century life and times.

I cannot add to what has been stated. But I can say that any person who seriously reads Mark Twain, including getting his/her hands on any works available by Him, will want, no, need this volume. Encyclopaedias are wonderful sources of detail, and to have one specifically centered upon an author and his works, life, friends & acquaintances, etc. is actually even better, for all effort has been placed in detailing everything possible rather than only bits and pieces.

I enjoy just reading this book from the beginning. Having been to Twain's places of residence (including his grave site), this volume simply makes such a trek more interesting and intriguing.

Excellent reference to Twain and his world!

Elvis, the Beatles and Marilyn Monroe have received the A to Z treatment in which every aspect of their lives and works have been reordered alphabetically, so it was only a matter of time that the mania would spread to lesser figures, in this case Mark Twain, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. This series of three books, originally published by Facts On File and now updated and reprinted by Oxford University Press, combines facts culled from the writers' lives and works, shakes them up thoroughly, and recasts them into easily locatable entries. The result is an addictive pleasure, a page-turning odyessy for anyone interested in learning more about their favorite writer. Mark Twain's fans will rightfully go ga-ga over this 500-page slab of scholarship, research and story telling. All of Twain's major works are discussed, as well as many of his short stories, speeches, newspaper articles, essays and unpublished works. Photos of the great man himself and his contemporaries are thrown in alongside illustrations from the novels. A year-by-year multi-columned chronology charts Twain's personal, professional and public lives. In short, the breadth and depth of this book is astonishing.

Learning a different style of Banjo playing

I highly recommend "The Banjo Encyclopedia: Bluegrass Banjo from A to Z". I learned to play the banjo clawhammer style about seven years ago and have enjoyed developing as an amateur banjo player.

However, three-finger picking style seems to be the predominate way of playing, for some time, and I can recognize its advantages for producing a more sophisticated style.

I have looked at a number of books and never taken the leap from clawhammer style to three-finger picking until now because it has taken "The Banjo Encyclopedia: Bluegrass Banjo from A to Z" to give me what I need to make that leap.

I have great confidence in the book. I like the accompanying disk. I expect to grow with Ross Nickerson's method as successfully as I did previously with my teacher and books.

This has it all

This is a great way to begin your banjo journey. I have taken lessons with Ross and he is a fantastic teacher. He has an easy way about him that draws you into the instrument instead of scaring you off it.

The book is written in that very same style. It is very comprehensive but it is broken up into sections that allow you to progress naturally. You will find yourself going back to chapters well after your "beginner" stage. He shows you many different styles of playing and even how to mix them together! I think it's better than the Scruggs book. (but you should own that as well - just because)

If you play banjo or are thinking about it, buy this book. Trust me.

A welcome and thorough study of the instrument

In the old days, banjo techniques were passed down orally from generation to generation as part of regional and familial folklore. Today, aspiring 5-string pickers have a multitude of high quality instructional materials readily available. Ross Nickerson has an impressive resume as a performer, recording artist and teacher. One of his primary goals is to help avoid having to learn everything the hard way. He provides time saving, practical lessons and advice. The Banjo Encyclopedia is very comprehensive, covers many topics, and is a tool that should be referenced regularly.

He starts at square one with the basics of holding the banjo, using picks, reading tab, tuning, positioning hands, and overcoming difficulties. Rolls and exercises are then covered. Chapters are dedicated to right hand technique, as well as that for the left hand. By the end of Chapter 3, one is learning "Banks of the Ohio" and "Bury Me Beneath the Willow." An important lesson that many books fail to present is practice habits and practicing priorities. Nickerson does a fine job emphasizing the importance of a good practicing routine. Basic Scrugg's picking is then addressed and related to the songs, "Sitting on Top of the World" and "Nine Pound Hammer." Melodic and single-string styles of playing introduce some fiddle tunes, and then the author has us put it all together along with rhythm and chordal backup. Chapter ten broaches the subject of improvisation, before we get into kickoffs, turnarounds, and endings. Playing at slower tempos and in waltz time are covered. Finally a chapter on banjo maintenance by Mike Munford addresses all the parts. Advanced songs taught include John Henry and Train 45. The accompanying CD is 78 minutes long, and clear references to the disc tracks are given throughout the book. Nickerson teaches in a very straightforward style, although I might have slightly changed the sequence of some of the instructional material. The Banjo Encyclopedia is a welcome and thorough study of the instrument, most appropriate for beginning and intermediate players. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

I bought this based on customer reviews and it appears to be all it's cracked up to be. However I wanted to warn folks that a book this thick and perfect bound is not very practical. You will have to break the spine to get it to flatten out and actually use. Or you can have it trimmed and rebound at a print shop. I noticed that the website, BanjoTeacher.com, does offer a spiral-bound version and am sorry I didn't go that route. I just don't like tossing my credit info all over the internet, so it would be nice if Amazon could carry the spiral bound edition as well.

I looooved this book growing up! Not only did I feel I could relate to this girl, but it was comforting back then to know that our moms went through the same sort of issues we did. Reminiscing now and wish I had the book here with me.

A girl that is going through a humourous stage.

I thought that this is a very good book.I got hooked to it and just had to read on. I enjoyed the humor in the book. It made me giggle a lot. I like that in a book. I have a lot of common values with the main character which made me entertained. I would give this book 5 stars. Thanks for your patients. If you like funny books then I recommend this book to either you and young adults. Thank you very much.

I remember reading this when I was in Jr High School...12 yrs ago. I LOVED this book! I read it over and over again. It's about a young girl growing up and her adventures along the way. The one thing that I remember most about this book is how you could pull it out at any time and just smile as you read it. Now that I am an adult, and have long ago donated my copy, I am now looking for another copy of it. If you have something that makes you feel good, even though you think you may have outgrown it...Hold on to it! It more than likely will still make you smile years down the road!
